Padma Lakshmi becomes Kerala's first transgender lawyer

A law graduate from Ernakulam Government Law College, Padma Lakshmi also aims to crack the judicial service exams after practice, India Today reported

Kerala has got its first transgender lawyer in Padma Lakshmi who enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of the state on March 19.
State Minister P Rajeev shared on Instagram that Lakshmi was among more than 1500 law graduates who were given the Bar enrolment certificate.
A law graduate from Ernakulam Government Law College, Padma Lakshmi also aims to crack the judicial service exams, India Today reported.
In his post which has been translated from Malyalam to English, P Rajeev wrote said, "Congratulations to Padma Lakshmi who overcame all the hurdles of life and enrolled as the first transgender advocate in Kerala. Becoming the first is always the hardest achievement in history. There are no predecessors on the way to the goal. Obstacles will be inevitable. There will be people to mute and discourage. Padma Lakshmi has written her name in the legal history by overcoming all this."

On March 3, Students' Federation of India (SFI) activists trespassed into the Kochi office of the news channel and intimidated the staff there. A case was later registered against 30 SFI activists, the students' wing of the ruling CPI(M) in Kerala, on the basis of a complaint lodged by the channel.
Following the police action, Asianet News tweeted: "Days after SFI hooliganism, Kerala Police conducts 'search' at Asianet News Kozhikode office. Regardless, Asianet News continues to report, true to its motto: Straight. Bold. Relentless. #AttackOnMedia #PressFreedom #AsianetNewsAttacked." The search was condemned by the Congress and BJP in Kerala which termed it as "a sign of intolerance" and a "fascist approach", respectively.

Kerala farmer who went missing in Israel returns to India

The delegation had gone to Israel on February 12 and Kurian was found to be missing on February 17 after the study got over.

A farmer from Kerala who went to Israel as part of a government-sponsored tour to study modern farming technologies and thereafter reportedly went missing returned to India on Monday.
The farmer, Biju Kurian (48), after landing at the Calicut International Airport at around 5 AM, told reporters that he is conveying his apologies to the Kerala government, state Agriculture Minister P Prasad, the 27 member delegation and the officials who were leading it.
Explaining his absence from February 17, when the five-day tour to understand new farming techniques from Israel had gotten over, he told reporters that he had gone to visit holy places in Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
Thereafter, he came to know about news reports that he was missing and so he did not know what to do next, the farmer claimed.

After he reportedly went missing, the state Agriculture Minister said that the government will look into the incident.

Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan walked out of jail on Thursday, a day after the sureties required for his bail were submitted in court.
Two sureties of Rs 1 lakh each were submitted on Wednesday in the special PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court here.
Kappan was released from jail around 9.15 am, Jailor of Lucknow District Jail Rajendra Singh told PTI.
Interacting with reporters after coming out of jail, Kappan said, "It has been 28 months. I am out after a lot of fight. I am happy." Asked about the purpose of his visit to Hathras, Kappan said he had gone there for "reporting". About those who had accompanied him, he said they were students.
To questions about recoveries made from him, Kappan said, "Nothing...I had only a laptop and mobile." Asked about reports that some objectionable materials were also found from him, he said, "Two pens and a notepad." The journalist and three others were arrested in October 2020 while on their way to Hathras where a Dalit woman died allegedly after being raped. They were accused of trying to instigate violence over the death of the Hathras woman.
Police had alleged that Kappan had links with the now-banned Popular Front of India and charged him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and sections of the Indian Penal Code.
In September last, the Supreme Court granted him bail in connection with that case. But, he continued to be in jail because of the money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate.

He secured bail from the Allahabad High Court in an alleged money laundering case on 23 December 2022. The Supreme Court had granted him bail on 9 September 2022 in a UAPA case.

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan has joined the group of voices opposing UK broadcaster BBC's documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots.
Khan on 25 January 2023 linked the release of the documentary to India's presidency of the G20 group of nations. He questioned the timing of the release and said that the source of the documentary was one who had predicted in 1947 that India was not capable of preserving its freedom.
The two-part BBC documentary, which claims it investigated certain aspects relating to the 2002 Gujarat riots when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister of that state, has been trashed by the Ministry of External Affairs as a "propaganda piece" that lacked objectivity and reflected a "colonial mindset".
The Centre had last week directed the blocking of multiple YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing links to the documentary.
The public screening of the documentary in some places has sparked controversy.

BBC's documentary screened across Kerala; AK Antony's son voices displeasure

BBC's "India: The Modi Question" was screened in several parts of the state on Tuesday, prompting protest marches by the BJP's Yuva Morcha against the same.

The controversial BBC documentary on 2002 Gujarat riots when Prime Minister Narendra Modi helmed the western state was screened across Kerala on Tuesday by various political organisations including the pro-left Students Federation of India (SFI), as the BJP youth wing went up in arms protesting against the screening.
BBC's "India: The Modi Question" was screened in several parts of the state on Tuesday, prompting protest marches by the BJP's Yuva Morcha against the same.
However, support came in for the BJP from unexpected quarters as senior Congress leader and former Kerala CM AK Antony's son, Anil, voiced displeasure against the documentary.
Protest marches were taken out by Yuva Morcha to the Victoria College in Palakkad and Government Law College in Ernakulam where SFI followed through with its announcement to screen the documentary.
In both places, police intervened to remove the protestors and prevent any conflict.
More screenings are expected to take place in some colleges in Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram later Tuesday, a senior police officer said.
DYFI, the youth wing of the ruling CPI(M) in Kerala, said it will screen the documentary not just in the southern state, but across India.
It has to be shown to the public irrespective of the attempts by the Union government to hide it, V K Sanoj, state secretary of the DYFI told reporters.
He said there was nothing "anti-national" about screening the documentary as it has not been banned.
DYFI has no interest in creating any atmosphere of conflict in the state or the country, Sanoj added.
Meanwhile, former chief minister Antony's son Anil, in apparent support to BJP in the ongoing political storm in the state, said placing the views of the British broadcaster over Indian institutions would "undermine" the country's sovereignty.

Kerala teacher arrested for allegedly molesting 26 students

The senior teacher was arrested under various provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on January 12 based on complaints from the district Childline authorities, police said.

"A student recently narrated the abuse she faced to another teacher of the school. She immediately informed the Childline authorities who later informed us. We got the complaint on January 11," police told PTI.
The official said upon further counselling, more students raised complaints against the senior man.

A deadly outbreak of bird flu has been reported from a government poultry farm in Kozhikode district of Kerala.
Around 1,800 chickens have died so far due to the disease, as per sources quoted by news agency PTI. The presence of H5N1 variant at the farm managed by the panchayat was confirmed on 11 January 2023.
As initial tests indicated the outbreak of bird flu, the samples were sent to the high security lab in Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) for accurate diagnosis which confirmed the avian influenza, a government statement said.
There were over 5,000 chickens in the farm and of them 1,800 died so far due to the infection.

In another suspected case of food poisoning, a 20-year old woman has died after allegedly consuming 'Kuzhimanthi' - a biryani dish in Kerala from a local hotel.
Police said Anju Sreeparvathy from Perumbala near Kasaragod, had eaten 'Kuzhimanthi' which she purchased online from a restaurant named Romansia at Kasaragod on December 31 and was undergoing treatment since then.
"A case has been registered after her parents filed the complaint. The girl died early Saturday morning," police told Press Trust of India, adding that further action will be taken based on the forensic report.
The girl was undergoing treatment at a private hospital, from where she was taken to another hospital at Mangaluru in Karnataka, where she died.

Meanwhile, state Health Minister Veena George, ordered a probe into the incident.
"Directions have been issued to the Food Safety Commissioner to file a report with regard to the incident. The DMO is also looking into the incident and the treatment given to the girl," Ms George told reporters at Pathanamthitta.
She said the licence of the hotels which are accused of food poisoning, will be cancelled under the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA).
Earlier this week, a nurse in Kottayam Medical College died allegedly after consuming food from an eatery in Kozhikode.

On 29 December 2022, 33-year-old nurse Reshmi Raj had ordered food from Hotel Park in Kottayam. She died on 2 January 2023.

CBI gives clean chit to former Kerala CM Chandy in sexual exploitation case

Last year, the CBI had taken over the investigation into cases against Chandy, former Union minister K C Venugopal and other politicians related to allegations of sexual exploitation by the accused woman

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted a report in the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court here giving clean chit to former Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy in the sexual exploitation allegation levelled by a prime accused woman in the sensational solar scam.
The CBI submitted the referral report in the court here on Tuesday, sources said.
Last year, the CBI had taken over the investigation into cases against Chandy, former Union minister K C Venugopal and other politicians related to allegations of sexual exploitation by the accused woman.

The cases against the six persons, including Chandy, were registered over the last few years and investigated by the Crime Branch of the Kerala Police based on a complaint by the woman, an accused in the multi-crore solar panel scam during the UDF government, that she was sexually exploited by them in 2012.
The CPI(M)-led Kerala government had recommended a CBI inquiry into the cases in early 2021.
The opposition Congress had dubbed the move as "politically motivated", saying the LDF government could not find anything against the party leaders and took the decision as elections were around the corner.
Sources said that the CBI probe has found that there was no basis for the woman's allegation against Chandy as there was no evidence to prove that she had gone to the official residence of then Chief Minister on that particular day.
The CBI has also found that it was a fabricated case, the sources further said.
In a letter to the police commissioner on July 19, 2013, the woman had levelled charges of sexual misconduct and corruption against several Congress and UDF leaders, including Chandy, some of his ministers and two former Union ministers.&nbsp;

Over Rs 200-crore revenue was generated by the Lord Ayyappa shrine at Sabarimala in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala in the last 39 days of the two-month long annual pilgrimage season.
Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) president K Ananthagopan, in a release, announced that Rs 222.98 crore was earned by the temple since the Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage began on November 17.

Of the nearly 30 lakh, one-fifth were children. According to Ananthagopan, it was probably because they could not come in the previous two years due to Covid-19 restrictions.
A special queue was introduced for the disabled, the elderly and children, the release quoted the TDB president as saying.
This time, devotees were able to complete their pilgrimage without any complaint barring one on the day when pilgrims had to wait for long for the darshan, the release said.
The Mandala pooja would be performed on Tuesday to mark the end of the 41-day long Mandalam period.
The pooja would take place in the afternoon after Lord Ayyappa's idol is adorned with the 'Thanka Anki', the sacred golden attire, which reached Sabarimala on Monday evening and was accorded a grand reception.
Weighing 453 sovereigns, the Thanka Anki was offered to the Lord by the Travancore royal family during the 1970s.
After the Mandala puja, the shrine would be closed for three days and reopen on December 30 at 5 PM for the Makaravilakku, the release said.
The Makaravilakku is on January 14, 2023. Thereafter, the shrine would be closed on January 20 marking the end of the pilgrimage season.

A 65-year old man, who allegedly used to stay in five-star hotels and leave without paying the bill, was caught on Sunday from near Kollam Railway Station and has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days, police said.
The man was arrested on a recent complaint by South Park Hotel, a five-star establishment in the heart of the state capital, where he had stayed and then left without paying the bill, an officer of Cantonment Police Station said.
He also stole a laptop from there, the officer said.
During investigation, his mobile number was traced and his photograph from CCTV footage of the hotel was also circulated, the officer said.
Subsequently, his mobile was located near Kollam Railway Station and with the help of Kollam police the accused was arrested by a team from Cantonment Police Station, the officer added.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that he has allegedly committed such frauds several times in the past in Kerala and other states, like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Goa, police said.

"We are waiting for people to identify him from the photograph circulated and then only we can accurately say how many times he has committed such an offence," the officer said.
During initial questioning, he claimed to be single and that he does not have any family, police said.
