Kerala had reported a few cases of monkeypox in September this year, following the global outbreak of the disease.

Two cases of monkeypox (Mpox) have been reported in Kerala, state Health Minister Veena George said on Wednesday.
Two men, who recently returned to Kerala from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), tested positive for the disease, she said.
One of the men from Wayanad district was initially found to be infected, and the second person, from Kannur, tested positive later, according to her statement.
Following the reports of the disease, the Health Department has directed those who came in contact with the patients to monitor for any symptoms and report them accordingly.
Kerala had reported a few cases of monkeypox in September this year, following the global outbreak of the disease.

Sojan Joseph (49), who hails from Kaipuzha -- a small village in Kottayam district of Kerala, won from the Ashford constituency in Kent County that was earlier held by the Conservative party.

Among the around 26 Indian-origin members of Parliament elected to the House of Commons in the UK's general election, there is a Malayali, hailing from this southern district of the state, among them.
Sojan Joseph (49), who hails from Kaipuzha -- a small village in Kottayam district of Kerala, won from the Ashford constituency in Kent County that was earlier held by the Conservative party.
Joseph, who contested as Labour party candidate in the constituency, has been living in Britain since 2002.
His father, K T Joseph, his three sisters and other relatives who were gathered in the family home here were overjoyed after hearing about his win.
"I am very happy. A Malayalee went there and won. He calls home everyday," the proud father told media on Friday.
His sisters said Sojan called home after his victory.
"He has been there for 22 years. We were all praying for his win ever since we got to know that he is contesting in the election," one of them said.
Another relative said Sojan joined the Labour party as he held socialist ideals.
His mother, Elikutty passed away three months ago and he had visited Kerala then.
Sojan had gone to Britain after completing his nursing studies from Bengaluru in 2001.
He has been working in the public sector there since 2002, his family said.
He has a wife and three kids. (PTI)

A low-intensity explosion was reported at Bavode near Chakkarakkal in Kerala's Kannur in the politically volatile district early on Monday.
Explosive materials in ice-cream ball-shaped containers exploded in the area where tension has been simmering between the activists of the BJP and the CPI (M) for some days over some local issues, PTI reported citing police sources.
The news agency added police personnel were present in the nearby area when the blast occurred.&nbsp;
News agency ANI said, a bomb squad accompanied by a dog squad was rushed to the spot to carry out searches, however, it could not be ascertained as to who threw the bomb.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, an investigation into the incident has been launched by the police.&nbsp;

The ruling CPI(M) in Kerala on May 5 called for the removal of campaign materials installed by the Left Democratic Front activists in public places across the state as part of the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls.
The state secretariat of the Marxist Party said all such materials including boards, posters, flags and festoons placed across the state by the LDF would be removed by May 10.
As part of the LS poll campaign, several campaign materials had been installed by the party activists across the state and these should be removed at the earliest, it said in a statement.
The state secretariat also urged the party leaders and workers to take the lead in removing the campaign materials, the statement added.

A 31-year-old man was sentenced on Monday to triple-life imprisonment by a court Idukki for raping his nine-year-old daughter two years ago.
Devikulam Fast Track Special Court (POCSO) Judge, Sirajuddin P A, sentenced the accused to triple life imprisonment and fined him ₹5,70,000.
The court said the convict shall be imprisoned for the remainder of his natural life, according to special public prosecutor Smiju K Das.
The court also sentenced him to 36 years of rigorous imprisonment under various sections of the POCSO Act and the Indian Penal Code.
The incident occurred between 2021 and 2022. The case originated from the plantation area of Munnar, where the victim resided with her parents.
According to the prosecution, the girl was staying with her father after the mother abandoned them. Between March 1, 2021, and August 21, 2022, the accused repeatedly subjected her to rape.
He also issued threats, warning the child of dire consequences if she disclosed it to anyone, the prosecutor said.
However, the girl informed her mother about the rape.
She suffered burn injuries after the accused placed a heated spoon on her left arm muscle for revealing the incidents to her mother.
Subsequently, the child shared her ordeal with her fellow student and a teacher, who provides counseling services at her school.
The school then notified the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). The CWC, in turn, alerted the police, leading to the filing of the case.
The prosecution examined 22 witnesses and presented 42 documents as evidence.

The Congress leader was addressing a large public meeting in Pathanamthitta Lok Sabha constituency when she noticed a wheelchair-bound boy being lifted up high by the party workers and the child smiling joyously.
She immediately stopped her speech and remarked "sweet" and invited the boy and his mother to the stage.
"Come here, come here. Come and sit here. What is his name?" she said, gesturing to them to come on to the stage.
The party workers then helped the mother and child over the barricade and then took them on to the stage where she interacted with the boy and also gave him a shawl sporting the party colours.
Thereafter, she commenced her speech.&nbsp;

According to the police, the incident happened on April 15 in Fort Kochi, and an FIR was registered the next day.

The deadline loomed like the sword of Damocles but an astonishing four days is all it took for people in Kerala to channel their compassion and rally together to raise an astounding Rs 34 crore to save a man from the state from the gallows in Saudi Arabia.
In a display of solidarity, people in Kerala have come together to save Abdul Rahim, who hails from Kozhikode, whose only chance to live is to pay the blood money of 15 million Saudi Riyals which comes to around Rs 34 crore, before April 18, 2024.
Rahim has spent 18 years behind bars in the Gulf nation for allegedly killing a Saudi boy in 2006.
Until five days ago, the action committee, formed to work for the release of Rahim, could raise only a meagre amount but as the deadline neared, the campaign was intensified and help poured in from Kerala people from across the world, the action committee formed to help Rahim, said on Friday.
Local people said Rahim was jailed in 2006 after he accidently caused the death of a specially-abled boy whom he was taking care of. He was sentenced to death in 2018 after the family of the Saudi boy refused to grant amnesty.
The action committee members told the media that the appeals were rejected by the top courts but later the family agreed to pardon Rahim if he pays 'blood money.' Praising the spirit of Kerala people, Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, said it was the "Real Kerala Story" of compassion and truth.
He said in the face of relentless hate campaigns targeting Kerala, "the indomitable spirit of Malayalis shines through", upholding together the state's resilience and compassion.
"Abdul Rahim's story, a Kerala man facing execution in Saudi Arabia, symbolises this resistance. With 34 crore rupees raised for his release, Kerala's commitment to its people and values is crystal clear, shattering divisive lies.
"Gratitude to all those who joined hands for this humanitarian cause. United, we'll continue sharing the Real Kerala Story of compassion and truth," Vijayan posted on X.
The action committee, which met the media said more than 75 organisations in the Gulf region, along with Kerala-based businessman Bobby Chemmannur and various political organisations in the state, worked tirelessly in the last few days to meet the deadline.
"Thousands of common people contributed whatever they could and all helped us to raise the money," a member of the committee told the media here.
His mother said she never thought that such an amount could be raised.
"I had no hope as we have no means to raise Rs 34 crore. But somehow it was all made possible," she said.
The committee said all the transactions were through a mobile application created for the purpose of crowdsourcing and it ensures transparency in the matter.
Chemmanur organised multiple events in the past few days to raise money. He also arranged for the sale of one of his products and donated the amount for the cause. The businessman has also assured to give a job to Rahim once he is back in the state.

A school in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram recently got a special teacher in form of an artificial intelligence-based humanoid.
Named 'Iris', the saree-clad humanoid bears resemblance to a regular female teacher and can speak three languages.
Developed by a private firm Makerlabs, 'Iris' is equipped with features like voice assistant, interactive learning, manipulation capabilities and mobilities.
The humanoid, introduced at KTCT Higher Secondary School, was built as part of the Atal Tinkering Lab scheme.
Sharing a video of Iris on Instagram, Makerlabs wrote, &ldquo;With IRIS, we&rsquo;ve set out to revolutionize education by harnessing the power of AI to create a truly personalized learning experience. By adapting to each student&rsquo;s needs and preferences, IRIS empowers educators to deliver engaging and effective lessons like never before.&rdquo;
The humanoid is powered by a dedicated Intel processor and comes with an Android app interface.

A unique initiative was launched across Kerala schools to make sure students drink enough water during school hours.&nbsp;

The water-bell system, envisaged to ensure that students drink adequate water during school hours, commenced in Kerala schools on Monday.
State General Education Minister V Sivankutty inaugurated the initiative during a function held in a vocational and higher secondary school here. Under the new initiative, the bell would be rung twice at 10.30 am and 2.30 pm in all schools in the state to remind children to drink water. With temperatures soaring by the day in the state, it is necessary to ensure that students drink adequate water to keep themselves hydrated during summer, official sources said. The increased heat is likely to trigger dehydration and uneasiness among students and so it is necessary for them to drink a lot of water even if they don't feel thirsty, the minister said. The minister said that clean drinking water should be made available in schools for students who do not bring water from home. Drinking enough water is the only way to fight adverse impacts of increasing heat, the minister said, urging everyone's support in implementing the initiative successfully. Earlier, the General Education Department made it clear that Kerala was the first state to introduce this system in the country. "We implemented it for the first time in 2019 in schools in some areas, due to the high temperature there. Drawing lessons from us, states like Karnataka and Telangana implemented it later. Now, we are implementing it in schools across the state considering the rising mercury levels," a source had said. Under the new system, each such 'drinking water' break will be for five minutes.

He also alleged that BJP and NDA-ruled states are getting favourable treatment.

The Russian team did the cleaning in the presence of C Satheesh, the President of the All Kerala Tour Guides Association, leading a group of NRI tourists. Satheesh later expressed his embarrassment, stating, &ldquo;It is a matter of shame that foreign tourists had to take up cleaning of Kerala&rsquo;s prime beachfront.&rdquo;
The tourists also left a message on the bags, that read, "Cleanse your life, collect trash, fill a pocket with it, burn it or bury it." As the video of the incident went viral, several social media users started quickly reacting to it.&nbsp;
One of the internet users said that this is so embarrassing for Indians. While others reacted by saying, "Fed up with the uncleanness at Fort Kochi Beach, a group of Tourists from Russia started cleaning the beach themselves. A local person helped them to buy the garbage bags but the local councillor declined to remove even the filled bags!"
In response to this, the Kerala Tourism Department called for a report from its officials regarding the beach's current condition.&nbsp;

High drama played out in this Kerala district on Saturday when State Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, facing SFI's black flag protest, got off his car, took on the agitating Left student wing members, sat on the roadside and hit out at the Chief Minister in what seemed to be yet another chapter in the Raj Bhavan vs the ruling LDF face-off.
Meanwhile, the Centre on Saturday extended Z+ security cover to Khan, who lashed out at Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for "promoting lawlessness." A visibly irked Khan, on his way to Kottarakkara for an event, got out of his car at Nilamel, took on the agitating members of the Students Federation of India and sat on the roadside demanding police action against the activists of the CPI-M-affiliated SFI for staging a black flag protest against him.
While the BJP threw its weight behind Khan, State General Education Minister V Sivankutty said that no Governor of any state in the country has behaved in this manner.
The Congress-led UDF on the other hand said that this was all part of the ongoing political drama of the state government and the Governor.
Accusing Vijayan of "promoting lawlessness in the state", Khan said, "as head of the state, lawlessness shall not be tolerated".
The Governor also said that the "attacks" against him were being organised "to divert attention from the Left government's failures and provoke some drastic action (from him)".
"I am not going to oblige them," he said.
The Governor also termed the SFI activists as "goondas" and "daily wagers" of the Marxist veteran and the Left party.
"You go and show black flag, hit the car, come back and take your payment," he said.
After sitting there for over two hours, Khan left the place only after the police showed him a copy of the FIR registered against 17 SFI activists under non-bailable provisions of the law.
The dramatic scenes were witnessed at Nilamel in Kollam, located about 40 km from the state capital Thiruvananthapuram.
Less than an hour after what happened in Nilamel, the Kerala Raj Bhavan announced that the Ministry of Home Affairs has extended Z+ security cover of CRPF personnel to Khan.
"The Union Home Ministry has informed Kerala Raj Bhavan that Z+ Security cover of CRPF is being extended to Hon'ble Governor and Kerala Raj Bhavan," a post, on the Governor's X handle and Facebook page, said.
Speaking to reporters before leaving Nilamel, the Governor lashed out at Vijayan, saying the Marxist veteran was "promoting lawlessness in the state".
"It is him who is giving direction to the police to give protection to these lawbreakers against whom, including the state president of the organisation (SFI) many criminal cases are pending in the courts," Khan charged.
Khan said that he has no problems with protests as long as the black flags are waved from afar.
"But why hit my car? I had said earlier in Thiruvananthapuram that if you hit my car, I will get down. They hit my car today," he alleged.
He further questioned whether protestors would be allowed to line up on the roadside if the CM was travelling along that route.
"What treatment was meted out by the police to those who came near the bus of the Kerala sadas?" he asked.
He also asked why the police were not able to remove the protestors if they were only 17 in number as per the FIR, especially when there were much more police personnel on duty.
The Governor, while on his way from Thiruvananthapuram to attend a programme in Kottarakkara here, saw SFI protestors on the roadside near Nilamel waving black flags and banners, stating "Sanghi Chancellor go back" -- at him.
Khan ordered his vehicle to be stopped, got out and walked towards the SFI activists, shouting "aao" (come) at them.
As he rushed towards the protestors shouting at them, the police personnel deployed there acted as a barrier between him and the SFI workers who kept yelling slogans at Khan.
After the police removed the protestors from the area, Khan took a chair from a shop on the busy MC Road and sat down there demanding action against the agitators.
In the visuals aired on TV channels, a visibly angry Khan could also be seen talking tough to the police personnel.
He was heard telling his personal staff to get him the Police Commissioner or whosoever was there in his office.
"Else call the Prime Minister's Office (PMO)," he was heard saying.
When the officers there requested him to resume his journey, the Governor refused and shot back, "I will not go. You (police) were giving protection to them (protestors) here." "If the police itself is breaking the law, who will uphold the law," he was heard saying.
When reporters later asked Khan if he had staged a protest, he said it was not so.
"This is not any protest. Why should I protest? Why will I protest? I can take action. I was waiting for the FIR copy to come," Khan said.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan told reporters that the situation "clearly indicates" that the Home Department and Vijayan, who heads it, have failed to discharge their Constitutional duties.
He also said the CM should realise that the Governor cannot be deterred by such moves.
"He (CM) should understand that he is playing with fire," the MoS said.
Sivankutty, on the other hand, termed the incident as the "fourth show" of the Governor.
"The first show was when he got out of his vehicle while on his way to the Thiruvananthapuram airport when SFI activists waved black flags at him. The second one was the manner in which he concluded the government's customary policy address in the Assembly." "The third was his conduct during the Republic Day celebrations at the Central Stadium in the state capital and this is the fourth one," the minister said.
The SFI held black flag protests against the Governor at Thiruvananthapuram when Khan returned there for some events.
Khan and the Left government have been at loggerheads over several issues, primarily about the functioning of universities in the state and his non-signing of certain bills passed by the Assembly.&nbsp;

The Kerala government on Saturday ordered an investigation into the stampede during the Cochin University's annual festival in which four students were killed and over 60 others were injured.
State Higher Education Minister R Bindhu has directed a three-member team, comprising the principal secretary of higher education, and Cochin University's vice-chancellor and registrar, to inquire into the stampede incident, an official release said.
The minister has instructed the officials to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a report, the release added.
Officials said the stampede occurred before renowned singer Nikita Gandhi was to perform at a musical festival in the open-air auditorium of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) near Kochi.
Four students, including two boys and two girls, lost their lives, while over 60 others are undergoing treatment at Kalamassery Medical College Hospital and some other hospitals nearby, according to State Health Minister Veena George.
George mentioned that four more students were in critical condition.
The singer later expressed her heartbreak and devastation in a Facebook post. She said that the incident took place before she could even leave for the venue for the performance.

A Kerala police officer offered to breastfeed a hungry baby, whose mother was hospitalized at the time.

In a touching display of compassion, Civil Police Officer M A Arya from Kochi Women's Police Station breastfed a hungry four-month-old baby while the infant's ailing mother was hospitalised nearby. Officer Arya, a mother of a nine-month-old herself, stepped forward to breastfeed the crying baby of a Patna resident undergoing treatment in the ICU of Ernakulam General Hospital.
The ailing Patna resident's four children, left with no one to care for them, were brought to the Kochi City Women's Station for assistance on Thursday.
According to the police, the family had been staying in Kerala for quite some time. They said that the Patna woman's husband is currently in jail in connection with a case.
While police personnel in the station pitched in to provide food for the three older children, Arya went above and beyond her call of duty by offering breast milk to feed the youngest one.
The city police praised Arya's deed.
The children were later shifted to a childcare home, ensuring their well-being in a more suitable environment, a statement issued by the police said.
The police also shared a picture capturing the moment when the officer comforted the baby.

CPM's mouthpiece Deshabhimani claimed that Mariyakutty was a Congress pawn who owned 1.5 acres of land and has a daughter in Switzerland.
Mariyakutty proved that the claims were false and forced Deshabhimani to issue an apology.&nbsp;
As per the Telegraph, Mariyakutty approached the Mannamkandam village officer and demanded a certificate from him acknowledging that she was the owner of 1.5 acres of land in his jurisdiction. The officer certified that no such land existed in her name.
Mariyakutty also proved that she lives in a tin-covered shed owned by her youngest daughter who sells lottery tickets in Adimali town for a living.
She has approached the high court for justice. She said she is called &ldquo;Magistrate&rdquo; as she always protests against injustice and has approached courts many times.

Three madrasa teachers were arrested on charges of sexual assault on minor students near here, police said on Saturday.
They were accused of molesting the children and indulging in unnatural sex with them for some time at a madrassa in Nedumangadu.
Of the three accused, one was a native of Uttar Pradesh, they said.
The arrest was made based on a complaint the police and the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) received from some parents, they added.
The case was registered under relevant sections of IPC, POCSO Act and Juvenile Justice Act.&nbsp;
