India accused Canada of allowing "celebration and glorification" of violence, expressing concerns over the security of Indian diplomats in that country.

India Tuesday hit out at Canada for providing "safe haven" and political space to "secessionist" elements, in a sharp reaction to pro-Khalistan elements displaying an effigy of the Indian prime minister in an offensive manner at a parade in Ontario's Malton area.
India also accused Canada of allowing "celebration and glorification" of violence, expressing concerns over the security of Indian diplomats in that country, and said it expects Ottawa to ensure that they are able to carry out their responsibilities without fear.
India's strong reaction came two days after the 'Nagar Kirtan' parade in Malton displayed a "float" that contained an effigy of the Indian prime minister reportedly within a cage.
"We again call upon the Government of Canada to stop providing criminal and secessionist elements a safe haven and political space in Canada," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
Jaiswal also recalled how float during a parade in June last year depicted the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi.
"As you are aware, we have repeatedly raised our strong concerns regarding the violent imagery being used by extremist elements in Canada against our political leadership. Last year, a float depicting the assassination of our former prime minister was used in a procession," he said.
Jaiswal said display of posters of Indian diplomats have also been put out across Canada threatening violence against them.
"Celebration and glorification of violence should not be a part of any civilized society. Democratic countries which respect the rule of law should not allow intimidation by radical elements in the name of freedom of expression," he said.
"We continue to remain concerned about the security of our diplomatic representatives in Canada and expect the Government of Canada to ensure that they are able to carry out their responsibilities without fear," he said.
The ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations in September last year of a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
New Delhi rejected Trudeau's charges as "absurd".
Last week, Canadian authorities charged three Indian nationals with the murder of Nijjar. It is reported that they entered Canada on student visas.
Karan Brar, 22, Kamalpreet Singh, 22, and Karanpreet Singh, 28, all Indian nationals residing in Edmonton, were charged on Friday with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Days after Trudeau's allegations in September, India asked Ottawa to downsize its diplomatic presence in the country to ensure parity. Subsequently, Canada withdrew 41 diplomats and their family members from India.
India has been asserting that its "core issue" with Canada remained that of the space given to separatists, terrorists and anti-India elements in that country.
Following Trudeau's allegations last year, India temporarily suspended issuance of visas to Canadian citizens. The visa services were resumed several weeks later.&nbsp;

An FIR was filed against unknown BJP leaders in connection with a case of hurling a Khalistani slur against IPS officer Jaspreet Singh in Sandeshkhali.
According to the Indian Express newspaper, the Kolkata Police filed the case under non-bailable sections based on a complaint received by the police. The complaint was reportedly filed by Gurmeet Singh, a member of the Youth Khalsa Club.
The FIR was filed on Friday under Sections 295A (Deliberate and malicious intention of outraging religious feeling), 505(2) (Statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
The incident happened on February 20 when Singh, among other police officers, was deployed to Sandeshkhali to maintain law and order.
When a group of BJP workers were prevented from entering the area, they called the Sikh police officer a Khalistani. The cop then hit back asking them to leave his faith alone.&nbsp;
Sandeshkhali has been on the boil ever since local women torched houses of TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his supporters for alleged land encroachment and sexual assault.
Sheikh has remained elusive since a mob attack on Enforcement Directorate officials in Sandeshkhali on January 5.

The Delhi Police are on alert after the US-based Khalistani supporter Gurpatwant Singh Pannun released a video message threatening to "shake the very foundation of Parliament" on December 13 -- the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attack on Parliament.
A senior police officer said security has already been stepped up in and around Parliament. "No one will be allowed to disturb law and order," he said.
"When Parliament is on, we remain alert. We are taking all precautionary measures to prevent any untoward incident," the officer said adding that security has also been beefed up in entire Delhi. &nbsp;In the video, which also had a photo of the 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, the chief of the proscribed organisation Sikhs for Justice claimed that the Narendra Modi government tried to kill him and threatened to respond on December 13.
Pannu claimed that his response would shake "the very foundation of the Indian Parliament".&nbsp;

The United States has said it will wait to see the results of the investigation announced by India concerning allegations of the involvement of an Indian official in a plot to assassinate a separatist Sikh leader in the US.
"We have noted at the most senior levels of this government &ndash; the secretary of state has raised this directly with his foreign counterpart that we take this issue very seriously. They told us they would conduct an investigation," State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters at his daily news conference on Tuesday.
"They have publicly announced an investigation. Now, we will wait to see the results of the investigation...," Miller said in response to a question.
American prosecutors have linked an Indian official to a man charged with conspiring to assassinate Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on US soil.
India has described it as a "matter of concern" and asserted that follow-up action will be taken based on findings of a panel investigating the allegations.
The US, Miller said, has also urged India to cooperate with Canada's investigation of allegations of Indian involvement in the killing of a Canadian national.

The White House on Thursday praised New Delhi for setting up its own investigations on the US allegations that an Indian official was involved in a plot to kill separatist Sikh leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.
The unnamed Indian official appeared in an indictment filed by federal prosecutors in a Manhattan court on Wednesday along with an Indian national, who the Department of Justice alleges hired someone in the US to assassinate Pannun, a vocal critic of India and espousing the cause of a separate Khalistan.
"These allegations in this investigation, (we) take it very seriously. And we're glad to see that the Indians are too by announcing their own efforts to investigate this. And we've been clear that we want to see anybody that's responsible for these alleged crimes to be held properly accountable," John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House, told reporters at a news conference here.
However, this will not have an impact on India-US relationship, he said, observing that the US unearthed this plot after the historic visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US.
"I want to be careful here that I don't get ahead of the Department of Justice and talk about an ongoing investigation. I would just say two things. India remains a strategic partner and we're going to continue to work to improve and strengthen that strategic partnership with India. At the same time, we take this very seriously," Kirby said in response to a question.
The Department of Justice, in an indictment charged Indian national Nikhil Gupta with conspiracy to commit murder for hire for his alleged role in the plot to kill the Sikh American individual. Gupta is accused of working with an Indian government employee to recruit and pay an assassin to carry out the killing.
"We are deeply disturbed by these reports and the potential threat they pose to the safety of our community. Since 2020, SALDEF has been tracking instances of censorship of diasporic Sikh voices and today's indictment is not an isolated incident but a part of a broader pattern of silencing Sikh voices,&rdquo; said Kiran Kaur Gill, executive director of SALDEF, which describes itself as is a national Sikh American impact organisation focused on building leadership and capacity in the Sikh American community.
"If these allegations are true, it would represent a serious violation of international law and be a blatant example of transnational repression," Gill said.
New Delhi announcing an investigation into allegations by the US that an Indian official was involved in a foiled plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist leader in the United States is good and appropriate, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Thursday.
"The government announced today that it was conducting an investigation, and that&rsquo;s good and appropriate, and we look forward to seeing the results,&rdquo; Blinken told reporters travelling with him in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Blinken was responding to a question on the appearance of an unnamed Indian official in an indictment filed by federal US prosecutors in a Manhattan court on Wednesday along with an Indian national, who the Department of Justice alleges hired someone in the US to assassinate Pannun, a vocal critic of India and espousing the cause of separate Khalistan.
"This is an ongoing legal matter. So you&rsquo;ll understand I can&rsquo;t comment on it in detail. I can say that this is something we take very seriously. A number of us have raised this directly with the Indian Government in past weeks," Blinken said.

New Delhi has issued a statement rejecting allegations by Canada of the Indian government being involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.&nbsp;
"We have seen and reject the statement of the Canadian Prime Minister in their Parliament, as also the statement by their Foreign Minister," the statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
"Allegations of Government of India's involvement in any act of violence in Canada are absurd and motivated," the statement read.
"Such unsubstantiated allegations seek to shift the focus from Khalistani terrorists and extremists, who have been provided shelter in Canada and continue to threaten India&rsquo;s sovereignty and territorial integrity," MEA further said.
"The inaction of the Canadian Government on this matter has been a long-standing and continuing concern. That Canadian political figures have openly expressed sympathy for such elements remains a matter of deep concern. The space given in Canada to a range of illegal activities including murders, human trafficking and organised crime is not new," it added.

The MEA urged the Canadian government to "take prompt and effective legal action against all anti-India elements operating from their soil".

Canada: another temple attacked, third incident of vandalisation this year

This is the third incident of a temple attack in Canada this year. India has issued strong warning to the Canadian government against attacks on temples and promotion of Khalistani propaganda in the country.

In another incident of temple vandalism, the Lakshmi Narayan temple in Canada's British Columbia was defaced with posters promoting the Khalistan referendum.
According to a India Today report, miscreants posted posters featuring photos of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the leader of the separatist group Khalistan Tiger Force, who killed by two unidentified men on June 18.
The vandalised temple is one of the largest and oldest Hindu temples in British Columbia.
This is the third incident of temple vandalisation in Canada this year.
On January 31, a prominent Hindu temple in Canada&rsquo;s Brampton was vandalised with anti-India graffiti. The act caused outrage among the Indian community.
The Mayor of Brampton, Patrick Brown, had then condemned the incident of writing hate-filled messages directed towards India on the walls of the temple.
In April this year, another Hindu temple in Canada's Ontario was vandalised with anti-India graffiti. The Windsor Police released CCTV footage showing two suspects spray painting on the walls of the Hindu temple.

"We have nabbed the woman, who harboured Amritpal and his associate Papalpreet Singh at her home in Shahabad on Sunday. The woman has been handed over to Punjab Police," Kurukshetra Superintendent of Police Surinder Singh Bhoria told PTI over phone.
He also said the woman knew Papalpreet Singh for over two years.
Officials have said Papalpreet Singh is considered one of Amritpal Singh's mentors and had been working closely with the radical preacher. He was seen driving the motorcycle on which Amritpal Singh rode pillion while escaping the police crackdown on his outfit on Saturday.
The two-wheeler was found abandoned near a canal in Jalandhar.

The vandalism by pro-Khalistan extremists at the Indian High Commission here was on Thursday raised in the House of Commons, with British MPs demanding action against "Khalistani hooligans" and the safety of India's diplomatic staff.
While Conservative Party MP Bob Blackman called for a debate in Parliament to discuss steps to ban groups behind the violence, Opposition Labour Party MP Gareth Thomas asked the Leader of the House of Commons about the steps being taken to ensure there is "no repeat of such behaviour".

Cleverly said in a statement that the police investigation is ongoing and UK Government is in close contact with the Indian High Commission in London and the Indian government in New Delhi.
"We are working with the Metropolitan Police to review security at the Indian High Commission, and will make the changes needed to ensure the safety of its staff as we did for today's (Wednesday) demonstration," the statement said further.
Suspected pro-Khalistan supporters on Wednesday held a fresh demonstration outside the Indian High Commission in the UK. However, unlike the earlier demonstration during which the tricolour was taken down and an attempt made to raise the Khalistan flag, the protest this time was confined behind police barricades.
The statement released by the UK Foriegn Secretary further said, "We will always take the security of the High Commission, and all foreign missions in the UK, extremely seriously, and prevent and robustly respond to incidents such as this."
Highlighting the UK-India ties, he said that the relationsip between both nations is thriving and is driven by "deep personal connections".&nbsp;
"Our joint 2030 Roadmap guides our relationship and shows what we can achieve when we work together, creating new markets and jobs for the two countries and helping to tackle shared challenges. We want to build deeper ties between the UK and India for the future," the statement said further.

"We are also appalled by the complete law and order failure in both in London as well as in SFO where a few radicalised separatists attacked India's diplomatic missions," Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) said after pro-Khalistani protesters attacked the Indian Consulate in San Francisco.
Raising pro-Khalistan slogans, the protesters broke open the makeshift security barriers raised by the city police and installed two so-called Khalistani flags inside the Consulate premises. Two consulate personnel soon removed these flags.
Soon thereafter, a group of angry protesters entered the consulate premises and started hitting the door and windows with the rods that they had in their hands.
There was no immediate comment from San Francisco police on the incident.
Community leader Ajay Bhutoria strongly condemned the attack by pro-Khalistan protesters on the Consulate of India building in San Francisco. "This act of violence is not only a threat to the diplomatic relations between the United States and India but also an attack on the peace and harmony of our community," he said.
In a statement, Bhutoria urged local authorities to take immediate action against those responsible for this attack and bring them to justice. "I also call on all members of our community to unite and promote peace and harmony," he said.
FIIDS said it is extremely concerning to see that the UK and the US have failed to fulfil the commitments as per Vienna Convention to protect diplomatic missions.
