North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, accompanied by his daughter, personally oversaw the recent test-firing of the country's most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile, state media images showed Friday.
The launch on Thursday -- Pyongyang's second ICBM test this year -- involved a Hwasong-17 missile, the official Korean Central News Agency reported, adding that it was fired in response to "frantic" US-South Korea joint military drills.
Photographs in the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper showed Kim watching the black-and-white Hwasong-17 -- dubbed a "monster missile" by analysts -- blast off into the sky.
Some of the images showed him watching the launch with his daughter -- never named by state media but identified as his second child Ju Ae by South Korean intelligence.
State media also released images showing the Earth from space, purportedly taken by a camera mounted on the ICBM.
KCNA said the launch "confirmed the war readiness of the ICBM unit", adding that it "had no negative impact on the security" of neighbouring countries.
South Korea had previously said the missile was fired on a lofted trajectory -- up instead of out, typically done to avoid overflying neighbouring countries.
Last year, North Korea declared itself an "irreversible" nuclear power, and Kim recently called for an "exponential" increase in weapons production, including tactical nukes.
Overseeing the Thursday launch, Kim said North Korea would "react to nuclear weapons with nukes" and called for "irreversibly bolstering up the nuclear war deterrent", according to KCNA.
He also highlighted the country's "rapid response posture... to cope with any armed conflict and war", KCNA said.
ICBM threat
In theory, the Hwasong-17 ICBM can reach the continental United States, and with this latest launch, North Korea is trying to emphasise the advanced level of its weaponry, analysts said.
"With the photos of the Earth, Pyongyang seems to be trying to show that it can accurately hit any target the regime wants with its ICBM," Cheong Seong-chang, a senior fellow at the Sejong Institute, told AFP.
The next step will likely be North Korea firing the missile "at a normal angle", he said, which would demonstrate it can survive reentry into the atmosphere.
The Thursday launch -- Pyongyang's third show of force this week -- came as Tokyo and Seoul sought to thaw long-frozen ties to counter an increasingly aggressive North Korea.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol flew to Japan Thursday to meet Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the first such summit in 12 years.
North Korea fired two cruise missiles from a submarine on Sunday, followed by two short-range ballistic missiles on Thursday, as South Korea and the United States staged major military drills.
The allies have ramped up defence cooperation in the face of growing military and nuclear threats from North Korea, which has conducted a series of increasingly provocative banned weapons tests in recent months.
"The fact (that) North Korea has almost normalised ICBM tests over the last year is a concern," Joseph Dempsey, a researcher at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told AFP.
Soo Kim, a former CIA Korea analyst, said that Kim's regime "has essentially desensitised the international community to its weapons tests," she told AFP.
"We've reached a point where an ICBM test draws no greater attention than a short-range missile test," she said.
"We'll continue to see North Korea advancing and expanding its suite of weapons capabilities in the days to come."

North Korea said Sunday its latest intercontinental ballistic missile test was meant to further bolster its &ldquo;fatal&rdquo; nuclear attack capacity against its rivals, as it threatened additional powerful steps in response to the planned military training between the United States and South Korea.
Saturday's ICBM test, the North's first missile test since Jan. 1, signals its leader Kim Jong Un is using his rivals' drills as a chance to expand his country's nuclear capability to enhance its leverage in future dealings with the United States. An expert says North Korea may seek to hold regular operational exercises involving its ICBMs.
North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency said its launch of the existing Hwasong-15 ICBM was organised &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo; without prior notice at the direct order of leader Kim Jong Un.
KCNA said the launch was designed to verify the weapon's reliability and the combat readiness of the country's nuclear force. It said the missile was fired at a high angle and reached a maximum altitude of about 5,770 kilometers (3,585 miles), flying a distance of about 990 kilometers (615 miles) during a 67-minute flight before accurately hitting a pre-set area in the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

The steep-angle launch was apparently aimed at avoiding neighboring countries. The flight details reported by North Korea, which roughly matched the launch details previously assessed by its neighbours, show the weapon is theoretically capable of reaching the mainland U.S. if fired at a standard trajectory.
The Hwasong-15 launch demonstrated the North's &ldquo;powerful physical nuclear deterrent&rdquo; and its efforts to "turn its capacity of fatal nuclear counterattack on the hostile forces" into an extremely strong one that cannot be countered, KCNA said.
Whether North Korea has a functioning nuclear-tipped ICBM is still a source of outside debate, as some experts say the North hasn't mastered a technology to protect warheads from the severe conditions of atmospheric reentry. The North has claimed to have acquired such a reentry vehicle technology.
The Hwasong-15 is one of North Korea's three existing ICBMs, all of which use liquid propellants that require pre-launch injections and cannot remain fueled for extended periods. The North is pushing to build a solid-fueled ICBM, which would be more mobile and harder-to-detect before its launch.
&ldquo;Kim Jong Un has likely determined that the technical reliability of the country's liquid propellant ICBM force has been sufficiently tested and evaluated to now allow for regular operational exercises of this kind,&rdquo; said Ankit Panda, an expert with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Chang Young-keun, a missile expert at Korea Aerospace University in South Korea, said that North Korea appeared to have launched an upgraded version of the Hwasong-15 ICBM. Chang said the information provided by North Korea showed the missile will likely have a longer range than the existing Hwasong-15 when launched on a normal trajectory.
The North's launch came a day after it vowed an &ldquo;unprecedentedly&rdquo; strong response over a series of military drills that Seoul and Washington plan in coming weeks.
In a separate statement Sunday, Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of Kim Jong Un, accused South Korea and the United States of &ldquo;openly showing their dangerous greed and attempt to gain the military upper hand and predominant position in the Korean Peninsula.&rdquo; &ldquo;I warn that we will watch every movement of the enemy and take corresponding and very powerful and overwhelming counteraction against its every move hostile to us,&rdquo; Kim Yo Jong said.
North Korea has steadfastly slammed regular South Korea-U.S. military trainings as an invasion rehearsal though the allies say their exercises are defensive in nature. Some analysts say North Korea often uses South Korea-U.S. drills as a pretext to test and modernize its weapons arsenals, which it believes is essential to win sanctions relief and other concessions from the United States.
&ldquo;By now, we know that any action taken by the U.S. and South Korea &mdash; however justified from the vantage point of defense and deterrence against (North Korea's) reckless behavior &mdash; will be construed and protested as an act of hostility by North Korea,&rdquo; said Soo Kim, a security analyst at the California-based RAND Corporation. &ldquo;There will always be fodder for (Kim Jong Un's) weapons provocations.&rdquo; &ldquo;With nuclear weapons in tow and having mastered the art of coercion and bullying, Kim does not need self-defense.' But pitting the U.S. and South Korea as the aggressors allows Kim to justify his weapons development,&rdquo; Soo Kim said.
U.S. National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said the U.S. will take all necessary measures to ensure the security of the American homeland and South Korea and Japan. South Korea's presidential National Security Council said it will seek to strengthen its &ldquo;overwhelming response capacity&rdquo; against potential North Korean aggression based on the solid military alliance with the United States.
South Korean and U.S. military officials plan to hold a table-top exercise this week to hone a joint response to a potential use of nuclear weapons by North Korea. The allies are also to conduct another joint computer-simulated exercise and field training in March.
Last year, North Korea set an annual record with the launch of more than 70 missiles, including nuclear-capable weapons. North Korea has said many of those weapons tests were a warning over previous U.S.-South Korean military drills. Last year, it also passed a law that allows it to use nuclear weapons preemptively in a broad range of scenarios.

The official Korean Central News Agency said the presence of Kim and his "beloved" daughter, known as Kim Ju Ae and believed to be around 10 years old, brought "joy and excitement" to Friday's ceremonial game between staff members from the Cabinet and the Defence Ministry.
The Defence Ministry team won the match 3-1 and then beat the Cabinet staff again in a tug-of-war event, according to the report, which didn't mention any comments made by Kim. The event was to celebrate the birthday of the late Kim Jong Il, the country's previous leader and the father of the current ruler.
"The stadium was filled with joy and excitement of officials of the Cabinet and the Ministry of National Defence who had the great honour of holding significant sports and cultural events on the spring holiday of February in the presence of Kim Jong Un whom they wanted to see even in their dreams," the KCNA report said.

It said all participants at the event made a "firm pledge to serve the people with devotion with renewed courage and in high spirits." Photos published by North Korea's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper showed Kim and his daughter smiling and clapping from the VIP seats, where they sat in the centre between senior government and military officials. Kim Yo Jong, Kim's sister and one of his top foreign policy officials, was seen sitting in a row behind them.
The event marked the sixth known public appearance of Kim Ju Ae, but the first that wasn't overtly related to her father's nuclear arms ambitions. She was first shown on state media in November when Kim Jong Un brought her to observe a flight test of an intercontinental ballistic missile.
She also appeared with her father in a huge military parade in the capital, Pyongyang, last week, when troops rolled out more than a dozen ICBMs, an unprecedented number that underscored how Kim continues to expand his military capabilities despite limited resources while diplomacy remains stalled.
Prior to the parade, Kim Ju Ae also joined her father in a visit to troops, where she sat in the seat of honor at a banquet while being flanked by her parents and generals. She also appears alongside her father in several new postal stamps released Friday to mark the November ICBM test, which the North has described as a success.
Analysts say Kim Ju Ae's appearances at major events tied to the country's military is her father's way of reminding the world he will never voluntarily surrender his nuclear weapons and missiles, which he clearly sees as the strongest guarantee of his survival and the extension of his family's dynastic rule. Her prominent exposure in state media could also be aimed at strengthening domestic loyalty to the Kim family and preparing for a future heredity transfer of power.
While North Korean state media's lofty descriptions of Kim Ju Ae, who has been called "beloved" and "respected," have fuelled speculation that she's being primed as a future leader, South Korean Unification Minister Kwon Youngse downplayed that possibility during a parliamentary session on Wednesday.

It is pertinent to note that Kim's longest-ever disappearance came in 2014 when he was not seen in public for 40 days, Fox News cited NK News.
The mass parades are slated to be held in Pyongyang on Tuesday or Wednesday and will be celebrating the 75th founding anniversary of the Korean People's Army.
Whether or not Kim will make an appearance in the parade, remains to be seen.
Kim may use the parade to showcase the latest hardware from his growing nuclear weapons and missile program which is also a growing concern for the US and its allies in Asia, Fox News reported.

In response to the expanded US military drills with South Korea, which were downsized during the Trump administration, North Korea even conducted a slew of launches which it described as 'simulated nuclear attacks', Fox News further reported.

Pyongyang has conducted an unprecedented wave of weapons tests this year, including the firing of its most advanced ICBM.

North Korea has successfully tested a "high-thrust solid-fuel motor" with the aim of developing a new weapon, state media said Friday.
Despite heavy international sanctions over its weapons programmes, Pyongyang has built up an arsenal of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
All its known ICBMs are liquid-fuelled, however, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said last year that developing solid-fuel engines for more advanced missiles was a strategic priority.
On Thursday, he oversaw the successful test fire of a "high-thrust solid-fuel motor", the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.
KCNA described it as an important test "for the development of another new-type strategic weapon system".

Images released by state media showed Kim observing the test at the Sohae Satellite Launch Ground, as the horizontally placed motor spewed bright yellow exhaust flame.
Another image showed him grinning with a lit cigarette in his hand and a tower of white smoke from the test behind him.
Liquid-fuel rockets are notoriously difficult to operate and take a long time to prepare for launch, analysts say.
They are thus slower, and easier for an enemy to spot and destroy.
Solid-fuel missiles are "more mobile, quicker to launch, and easier to conceal and use during a conflict," said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul.
"Once deployed, the technology would make North Korea's nuclear forces more versatile, survivable and dangerous."
Kim said this year that he wants North Korea to have the world's most powerful nuclear force, and declared his country an "irreversible" nuclear state.
The wishlist he revealed last year included solid-fuel ICBMs that could be launched from land or submarines.
The latest motor test was a step towards that goal, but it is not clear how far North Korea has come in the development of such a missile, analysts said.
It is "difficult to assess the thrust output claimed by North Korea," Joseph Dempsey, a researcher at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), told AFP.
"What other technical challenges remain and how far away a flight test of such a system is remains unknown," he added.

The leading officials and scientists had demonstrated to the world Pyongyang's "goal of building the world's strongest army", he added.
The launching vehicle for the new Hwasong-17 ICBM was awarded the title of "DPRK Hero", a separate KCNA report said, using the acronym for the North's official name.
It "clearly proved before the world that the DPRK is a full-fledged nuclear power," the report said, adding the North "fully demonstrated its might as the most powerful ICBM state".
The UN Security Council has passed nearly a dozen resolutions imposing sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear and missile activity since 2006.

The November 18 missile launch appeared to be Pyongyang's newest ICBM with the potential range to hit the US mainland.
The UN Security Council convened an open meeting over the launch, with the United States, Britain, France and India among 14 nations to "strongly condemn" Pyongyang's actions.

The daughter apparently is Kim's child who retired NBA star Dennis Rodman saw during his trip to Pyongyang in 2013. Kim and his father were both first mentioned in state media dispatches after they became adults. Given that, the revealing of the daughter believed to be in her early teens came as a surprise to outside observers.

Pyongyang issued "a stern warning to the South Korean military inciting military tension in the frontline area with reckless action," said the statement.
South Korea's military said it had detected the ballistic missile launch from the Sunan area in Pyongyang early Friday, just hours after Pyongyang flew 10 fighter jets close to the inter-Korean border.
