Ten years after a criminal case was instituted against a university professor for forwarding a cartoon allegedly aimed at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Alipur Court here on Friday discharged him of the charges.
A case was registered against Prof Ambikesh Mahapatra in April 2012 at Purba Jadavpur police station in Kolkata after he forwarded the cartoon to some people through email, and was arrested. He was later granted bail by a court.
The judge set aside an order of the chief judicial magistrate of the Alipore court of September 14, 2021, which rejected Mahapatra's prayer for discharge from the case.
Mahapatra had forwarded a cartoon of Banerjee and TMC leader Mukul Roy after the latter became Railway Minister replacing Dinesh Trivedi. The cartoon was based on Satyajit Ray&rsquo;s 1974 detective movie &lsquo;Sonar Kella&rsquo; which had a character named &lsquo;Mukul&rsquo;.
Mahapatra, a professor of chemistry at Jadavpur University here, was arrested on April 14, 2012.&nbsp;

In 1977, playing for the star-studded New York Cosmos, Pele faced a spirited Mohun Bagan at the jam-packed Eden Gardens.

Much before Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' moment stirred the football passion in Bengal, it was the Brazilian legend Pele who began the region's tryst with the 'beautiful game'.
Playing against Mohun Bagan at a jam-packed Eden Gardens in September 1977, the three-time World Cup winner was overwhelmed by the depth of talent the Indian club possessed.
Desperately seeking a revival after the dominance of arch-rivals East Bengal, Mohun Bagan not only stopped the 'King of Football' from scoring a goal but almost won 2-1 before a controversial penalty made it a 2-2 draw against the star-studded New York Cosmos.
But that wasn't the only visit Pele made to Kolkata.

Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal on Saturday said the directive was issued to all bars in the city to prevent drunk driving.
"Drunk driving is a legal offence. It's the reason for several road accidents. We have already sent a directive to all the bars in the city to purchase breathalysers to test every person leaving the bar after drinking. The bars must not allow them to drive back home in case they are found intoxicated beyond a certain level," he said.
If a person is found to be drinking excessively, the bars must ensure that he is not driving or riding a bike, Goyal said.
"The bar will arrange for the person to reach home by other means. If necessary, they can also take the help of the police," he added.
The bars would give slips to those undergoing the tests, and these slips can be shown at checkpoints to prevent further tests, the officer said.
Deaths due to road accidents in Kolkata have reduced from 450 in 2016 to 185 in 2022, he said.
Goyal was speaking at a session on 'Kolkata -- Safety and Security -- Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow', organised by the Bharat Chamber of Commerce.

The Kolkata Police has also decided to install 3,000 more CCTV cameras across the city, including the narrow lanes, Goyal said.
Expressing concern over the rising number of cyber crimes, he said every police station in the city will have at least four trained police personnel to deal with such incidents.
"Already 3,000 police personnel have been trained in this regard, while another 2,000 are undergoing training," he said.
Referring to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) data, Murli Dhar said crimes against women were lowest in Kolkata among the 19 metros in India in 2021.
"To strengthen the safety of women, 50 bikes will be kept at various police stations in the city to reach a spot quickly,"

According to a passenger who was in the plane, the incident happened on December 26 just before the plane was taxiing to the runway for takeoff. He was travelling to Kolkata along with his mother.
The passenger, who hails from Kolkata, told PTI about the incident on condition of anonymity.
He said that he was worried about his mother who was sitting near the seat where the incident happened. Later, other passengers and air hostess pacified the individuals involved in the scuffle, he added.
According to the passenger, the reason for the scuffle was not clear.
The plane landed at Kolkata early on Tuesday morning. It could not be immediately ascertained whether the incident was reported to the authorities in Kolkata after landing.
In the clip, two passengers were seen arguing before one of them said "put your hands down", and then started slapping the other person. A few other passengers also got involved in the scuffle.

The seventh Vande Bharat express started its journey at 11.45 am from platform number 22 of Howrah Station to travel to New Jalpaiguri, the gateway to the northeast.

The blue-and-white train, which covers a distance of 564 km in 7.45 hours, will save three hours of travel time compared to other trains on the route, officials said. It will have three stoppages at Barsoi, Malda and Bolpur.
The Vande Bharat express with modern passenger amenities is likely to be preferred both by regular passengers, tea industry executives and tourists travelling to the Himalayas in North Bengal and Sikkim.
The state-of-the-art train has 16 coaches, including two for drivers.
Earlier, Banerjee, while speaking on the occasion, condoled the demise of Modi&rsquo;s mother Hiraben. &ldquo;Your mother is also our mother,&rdquo; she said.
The CM also said work on four out of the five railway projects that Modi will launch on Friday were started during her tenure as railway minister.&nbsp;

Bachchan along with actor Shahrukh Khan inaugurated the film festival in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Governor C V Ananda Bose, his wife Jaya Bachchan, former India cricket skipper Sourav Ganguly among others.
An exhibition on the 80-year-old legendary actor's life and works will be showcased during the film festival, with the inaugural movie being 'Abhimaan'.
A total of 183 movies will be screened in 10 theatres across the city from December 16-22.

The man was admitted to the Neuro Medicine Department of the hospital with neurological disorders on 30 November.

The body of a 55-year-old patient was found hanging in a bathroom of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata on Monday morning, police said.
Ramchandra Mondal, a resident of Habra in North 24 Parganas district, was admitted to the Neuro Medicine Department of the hospital with neurological disorders on November 30, as per officials.
His body was found, by other patients of the hospital, hanging from the ceiling of the bathroom around 7 am.
"We have learnt from the hospital authorities that the deceased was depressed since he was admitted there. It seems to be a case of suicide. We can only ascertain the exact cause of the death after getting the post-mortem report," a police officer said.
An investigation is underway.

Several workers of a cold drink manufacturing unit located in Kamalgazi area in the southern fringes of Kolkata fell ill following leakage of toxic gas on Monday, police said.
Two fire fighters, who went there to rescue the workers also fell ill, a senior police officer, said.
The gas leakage was reported from the pipe meant to supply ammonia, which is used as a coolant at the factory, at around 4 pm, the officer said.
All the workers were removed from the factory and those who complained of "feeling sick", including the two fire fighters, were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment, the police officer said.

"We evacuated the workers of the factory and people of the nearby locality and tried to spot what the problem was. Going by the pungent smell of the gas it seems to be ammonia. We have a team of doctors with us," the officer told PTI.
Fire fighters sprinkled water continuously to "control the gas leakage", he said, adding that the spot of the leakage was spotted later in the evening and it was quickly "mended".
"It seems that the problem has been addressed and there is no gas leakage from the plant at the moment," the policeman said, adding that a huge police team is posted there as a precautionary measure.
No reaction was received from the authorities of the manufacturing plant despite repeated attempts.

Das later uploaded a video on Twitter to deter any assumptions made on his content. In the video Das can be seen asking his audience if anything he said during the show defamed India or hurt any sentiment. The crowd is seen answering in the negative.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) had provided Indian football team coach Igor Stimac a contract extension proposal where he has to either take Team India to the quarter finals of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup or take the sack.

&ldquo;The performance target is to be top-eight in the competition. If that target is achieved, then automatically the contract will be extended to another competition whichever is the priority for AIFF,&rdquo; Secretary General Prabhakaran said on Monday.

 At least four people were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a police officer and setting a police vehicle on fire in Kolkata during the BJP's rally, an official said.
The arrests were made during night-long raids in Beliaghata, Topsia and Bowbazar areas, he said.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Debajit Chattopadhyay was chased and assaulted with sticks by some people in the Bowbazar area during the BJP's 'March to Nabanna' rally on Tuesday.
A police vehicle was also torched near the Kolkata Police headquarters Lalbazar.
"The raids are still going on," said an officer of Kolkata Police on Wednesday afternoon.
The four arrested persons were identified from video clips of the two incidents, he said.
They have been booked under sections dealing with attempt to murder, destruction of government property and preventing public servant from performing duty, the officer said.
Chattopadhyay suffered multiple fractures and is at present undergoing treatment at a hospital, he said.
BJP's national vice-president Dilip Ghosh said the attacks were the handwork of TMC supporters who got into the rally.
"Our activists are being framed and false charges slapped against them," he alleged.
TMC MP Mahua Moitra said what if the West Bengal government follows the Uttar Pradesh "model" and "send bulldozers to homes of BJP workers who destroyed public property".

Initially, the users of the app were rewarded with a commission and the balance in the wallet could be withdrawn hassle-free. Later, all data, including profile information, was wiped off the app servers, according to the ED.&nbsp;

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday said it has seized more than Rs 7 crore in cash after it raided the promoters of a Kolkata-based mobile gaming app company as part of a money-laundering investigation.
A picture released by the federal agency showed bundles of seized Rs 500 currency notes along with a few in the denomination of Rs 2,000 and Rs 200 stacked together on a bed.
The searches were conducted at half-a-dozen locations of the gaming app named 'E-Nuggets' and its promoter identified as Aamir Khan and others, the Enforcement Directorate said in a statement.
"So far, more than Rs 7 crore in cash has been found at the premises and the counting is still in progress," the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said.

The money laundering case stems from an FIR filed by the Kolkata Police against the company and its promoters in February 2021.
This FIR was registered at the Park Street Police Station based on a complaint filed by the Federal Bank authorities before a court in Kolkata, the ED said.
Aamir Khan, son of Nesar Ahmed Khan, launched mobile gaming application E-Nuggets which was designed to defraud the public, the agency alleged.
"During the initial period, the users were rewarded with a commission and the balance in the wallet could be withdrawn hassle-free.
"This provided initial confidence among users, and they started investing bigger amounts for a greater percentage of commission and a greater number of purchase orders," it said.
The ED said that after collecting a "handsome amount" from the public, the withdrawal from the said app was stopped all of a sudden under one pretext or the other such as system upgradation and investigation by law enforcement agencies.
Later, all data, including profile information, was wiped off the app servers. It was then the users understood the ploy, the ED said.
Official sources said the agency is investigating if this app and its operators had links with other "Chinese controlled" apps that had been issuing loans at exorbitant rates to gullible persons and in many cases the loan takers ended their lives after they were threatened by these loan operators to pay up.&nbsp;
