Fourteen children were electrocuted during the Mahashivratri procession in Rajasthan's Kota on Friday late morning. According to reports, they were partaking in 'Shiv Barat' procession.
The children, aged 10-16 years, suffered burn injuries after coming in contact with a high-tension power line passing overhead in the Sakatoura area under the Kunhari police station, reports PTI news agency.
Two of the children sustained 100 and 50 per cent burn injuries, respectively, while the rest 12 sustained less than 50 per cent injuries, a senior police official told PTI. All were rushed to the MBS hospital in Kota.
Reacting to the incident, Rajasthan Minister Heeralal Nagar told ANI, "It's a very sad incident... Two children are seriously injured with one having 100% burns. A special team has been formed to provide all possible treatment. Officials are directed to investigate if there has been any kind of negligence."&nbsp;

Police and district officials in Kota who are trying to preventive measures in place to stop students from dying by suicide have blamed parental pressure for the extreme step.&nbsp;

One of the major reasons behind the poor mental health of students in this coaching hub that often prompts them to take the extreme step is "parents telling them there is no going back", according to police and district officials attempting preventive measures as record student suicides rock "Kota factory".
Top coaching institutes also claim that the majority of parents refuse to accept feedback provided to them and want their children to continue anyway in their preparation for engineering and medical entrance exams.
From reaching out to parents about possible signs of depression in their child, no aptitude for the particular subject or career, inability to live away from home, police and coaching institutes say their communications to parents about such issues are often met with resistance and majority of them refuse to accept these.
"Amid our interactions with the students, we found a student who was visibly depressed. I decided to call his father. His response was 'ye to auron ko depress kar de, aisa kuch nai hai' (he can depress others, there is nothing like that). The father refused to accept that there is an issue which needs his attention or intervention," Kota ASP Chandrasheel Thakur told PTI.
"When I insisted him to come and take his son home for few days, the man kept giving me excuses that he will not get train reservation this soon. I had to finally threaten him with an FIR and that is when he agreed to come but I was left thinking that if it took me so much to convince him, certainly his son did not stand a chance... Parents tell their own children that there is no going back," he added.
Thakur heads a student cell set up to reach out to students and make attempts to detect early signs of stress and depression.
A representative of a top coaching institute who did not wish to be identified told PTI, "In the last one year, we have reached out to over 50 parents telling them clearly that their child is not fit for this exercise and needs to be with them. At least 40 of them did not agree to take their child back home or withdraw from coaching. Others who paid some heed to the advice, withdrew from our coaching but shifted them to other institute. Such is the rigidity."
"We also organise counselling sessions and activities for parents but the attendance during such initiatives is very low. Parents often cite their inability to travel due to engagements or financial issues," he said.
Over 2.5 lakh students move to Kota annually to prepare for competitive exams such as the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for engineering and the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to medical colleges.
The year 2023 has seen the highest number of student suicides -- 23 so far -- with two ending their lives in a gap of a few hours on August 27. Last year, the figure was 15.
Packed schedules, cut-throat competition, constant pressure to do better, the burden of parents' expectations and homesickness are among the common struggles of the students here.
Kota District Collector OP Bunkar said parents have genuine intent behind sending their children to the coaching hub but they should be ready to accept and act if their child is not able to cope up due to any reason.
"We often hear parents saying that we have spent so much money..many of them deposit fees after lot of struggles...so it often becomes hard for them to accept the reality. They believe that their child can do it but is not doing it intentionally or not working hard enough. Students often are not able to convince their parents or when they communicate their concerns, they are not heard..this whole cycle is a huge contributing factor to stress among students," he told PTI.
Authorities in Kota asked coaching institutes to stop conducting routine tests of students preparing for NEET and other competitive exams for the next two months in the wake of suicides by a number of aspirants.
Psychiatrist Dr Neena Vijyvargia who counsels coaching students at the Health Mind Clinic, said many parents believe the child is "acting" when he reports about inability to perform or feeling stressed.
"I call parents, they say ye natak kar raha hoga (he must be acting)...they are not ready to believe that not becoming a doctor or engineer is not a sign of failure. Parents don't realise that motivating your child or pushing them to do better is one thing and pushing them to the brim is another,"

4th suicide this month, IIT-JEE aspirant from Bihar hangs self in Kota

An 18-year-old IIT-JEE aspirant from Bihar's Gaya allegedly hanged himself in his PG room in the fourth such case of suspected suicide by a coaching student this month, police said.
The incident came to light at night following which the police recovered the body and placed it at the mortuary of the New Medical College Hospital (NMCH) for post-mortem to be conducted after the arrival of his parents.
The deceased teen, identified as Valmiki Prasad, had reportedly been taking coaching for the IIT-JEE entrance exam at a coaching institute since the last academic session and was living in a PG room in Mahaveer Nagar area.
The deceased teen allegedly hanged himself to an iron angle of his PG room door and committed suicide sometime on Tuesday, said circle inspector at Mahaveer Nagar Police Station, Paramjeet Patel. He added that the victim was last seen on Monday evening.
The circle inspector said that the incident came to light at around at 8 pm on Tuesday following which the body was recovered from the room and placed at the NMCH mortuary for post-mortem after arrival of his parents.
No suicide note was recovered from the room and the reason behind this extreme step by the boy is yet to be investigated, he added.
Three other coaching students, including two IIT-JEE aspirants and one NEET-UG aspirant, have earlier this month also died in suspected suicide cases in Kota city, taking the toll of such cases this year since January to 20. Last year, at least 15 cases of suicide by coaching students were reported in the coaching hub.

In a bizarre scene, a Rajashan lawyer carried his 15-year-old son with an injured leg to the orthopaedic ward of a government hospital on his e-scooter as there were no wheelchairs around, according to reports.&nbsp;
In a video that has now gone viral on social media, the man, identified as Manoj Jain is seen riding the two-wheeler with his son riding pillon.&nbsp;
Dressed in a black coat, Jain not just entered the building but took escalator to get to the third floor where the orthopaedic ward situated.&nbsp;
Manoj Jain said upon reaching the hospital, he asked for a wheelchair from staffers Mukesh and Sukhlal but they said it was not available. He claimed that he got permission from the duo to take his scooter to the ward.
However, on their way back, the father-son duo was stopped by ward in-charge Devkinandan who took away the scooter's key. The advocate then created a ruckus against the alleged mismanagement of the hospital administration and the unavailability of wheelchairs.
Several others too demanded that they should also be allowed to bring their loved ones to the ward on a two-wheeler leading to a commotion.
As tempers flared, the hospital check post police rushed to the spot and calmed things down.
Meanwhile, Devkinandan admitted that there is a shortage of wheelchairs at the ward which is visited by around 3,000 patients daily and assured that the issue would be resolved soon.
Hospital deputy superintendent Karnesh Goyal, who also reached the spot, said the supply of wheelchairs from the government is awaited and sought donations from people to buy wheelchairs.

Three students preparing for competitive exams in Rajasthan's Kota have allegedly committed suicide in two separate incidents, police said on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Ankush Anand (18), a NEET aspirant, and resident of Bihar's Supaul district and Ujjwal Kumar (17), a JEE aspirant from Gaya district.

Both Bihar natives were found hanging from ceiling fans in their respective rooms early Monday morning in the same Paying Guest accommodation in Talwandi area under Jawahar Nagar police station, police said.
While Pranav Verma (17), a NEET aspirant from the MP's Shivpuri district, has allegedly consumed some poisonous substance in his hostel room under Kunhari police station area on late Sunday night, they said.
Anand and Kumar had been preparing for their entrance exams in the same coaching institute of the city for around two years, DSP and CO Jawahar Nagar area Amar Singh said.
When they did not open door of their rooms till around 11 am on Monday morning, other students inquired and informed the caretaker of the PG, who reported the matter to the police, the CO said.
The police rushed to the PG and broke open the doors of the two rooms, and found the boys hanging from the ceiling fans, the officer said.
The duo were likely to have committed suicide either early in the morning or intervening night of Sunday and Monday, however, exact time could be ascertained only after the postmortem, he said.
Initial inquiry revealed that both were irregular in attending their coaching classes for quite a long time and were out of track of the studies and that was likely to have driven them to study stress and to take the extreme step, the senior officer said.
However, no suicide notes were recovered from their rooms, he added.
Ujjwal Kumar's sister has also been taking coaching in Kota and living in girl's hostel in the same area, police said.
While Madhya Pradesh's Pranav Verma was found lying unconscious in the gallery of his hostel on late Sunday night at around 12 am, Circle Inspector at Kunhari police station Ganga Sahay Sharma said.
The teenager was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead, he added.
The deceased had been taking coaching for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) NEET -- a pre-medical entrance test, for the last two years, police said. &nbsp;The body was handed over to his family members after the postmortem, they said
