Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra on Monday wrote an open letter to BookMyShow requesting the online ticketing platform to either not delist him or to hand over the contact information of audience members he has earned through his solo shows over the years.
The letter, which he shared on his X page, comes days after Shiv Sena claimed BookMyShow had taken Kamra off the sale and artists list from its platform amid ongoing controversy around his 'traitor' jibe against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
"Dear BookMyShow, I understand that you need to maintain a cordial relationship with the state, and I know that Mumbai is a major hub for live entertainment. Without the state's cooperation, iconic shows like Coldplay and Guns N' Roses wouldn't be possible...
"I request one of the following: Do not delist me, or provide me with the data (contact information) I've generated through your platform from my audience," Kamra said in his two-page letter.
On April 5, the Mumbai-born comedian -- who is now a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu -- had asked BookMyShow whether the reports of him being delisted from the platform were true.
"Hello @bookmyshow can you please confirm if I have your platform to list my shows if not it&rsquo;s fine. I understand&hellip; (sic)" he wrote on X.
On Monday, the comedian also addressed his audiences calling for a boycott of the platform over the news of Kamra being delisted as an artist.
He said he was "not a fan of boycotts or down rating a private business".
"BookMyShow is well within their right to do what's best for their business (sic). However, the issue at hand isn't about whether you can or will delist me-it's about your exclusive right on listing our shows. By not allowing artists to list their shows through their own websites, you've effectively prevented me from accessing the audience I've performed for from 2017 to 2025," he further stated in the letter.
According to Kamra, BookMyShow takes a 10 per cent cut of revenue for listing shows.
"However, this raises an important point: No matter how big or small a comedian is, we are all compelled to spend between 6,000 to 10,000 rupees a day on advertising to reach our own audience. This cost is an additional burden that we, as artists, must bear." Kamra said one might argue that data protection is a concern, but the question of "who protects what data, and from whom, is a much broader conversation".
"What I'm requesting is simple: please ensure that you hand over the contact information of the audiences you've collected from my solo shows so that I can continue living my life with dignity and work towards a fair livelihood. As a solo artist, especially in the world of comedy, we are both the show and the production.
"For instance, if I performed at the Pune Comedy Festival with 30 other artists, that would be considered comedy's collective data. But my solo shows-that's my audience. The least I deserve, should you choose to delist me, is access to them," he wrote.
Kamra's letter comes the same day the comedian moved the Bombay High Court, seeking to quash an FIR lodged against him by the city police for his alleged remarks against Shinde, with the Madras High Court extending his interim anticipatory bail in relation to the case till April 17.
The comic also claimed he has been receiving death threats after the show and hence, requested the police to question him via video conference.
Some social media users have expressed support for Kamra and said they would delete the BookMyShow app if he is delisted as an artist on the platform.
A social media user wrote, "I have decided to #BoycottBookMyShow. What kind of an app tries to hold responsibility for the show content. To whoever tried to force you on Kunal Kamra, @bookmyshow just had to say 'we are not responsible for show content'. You couldn't do that much!" Another said, "If BookMyShow removed Kunal Kamra from its app. Why don't we all uninstall the BookMyShow app from our phones? 1.They are exercising their freedom; we must exercise ours. 2.If they censor what we like, we should censor what we dislike. #boycottbookmyshow #istandwithkunalkamra." Kamra is at the centre of a major political controversy in Maharashtra for his comments about Shinde, which he made during a stand up show titled 'Naya Bharat' last month, which led to Shiv Sainiks vandalising the venue, hotel and multiple FIRs against the comedian.
His new stand up show, however, has garnered over 1.3 crore views on his YouTube channel.

The plea, filed through advocate Meenaz Kakalia, is likely to come up for hearing before a bench headed by Justice Sarang Kotwal on April 21.
Kamra last month got interim transit anticipatory bail from the Madras High Court in the case against him. He is a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu.
The comedian has failed to appear before the Mumbai police for questioning despite three summons issued to him.
During a show, Kamra had taunted Shinde, without taking his name, using a modified version of a Hindi song from the film "Dil To Pagal Hai" where he called him a "gaddar" (traitor).
The comedian went on to joke about how Shinde rebelled against Uddhav Thackeray.
Following a complaint by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel, the police here registered the FIR against Kamra under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 353(1)(b) (statements conducing to public mischief) and 356(2) (defamation).

We restarted them, giving priority to development and welfare schemes," he said.

"I will not apologise... I don't fear this mob &amp; I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down," Kamra wrote and added that his statement was exactly what "Mr. Ajit Pawar (1st deputy CM) said about Mr. Eknath Shinde (2nd Deputy CM)".
Clips from his comedy show and the political row it sparked dominated headlines on Monday with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis saying Kamra should apologise for his "low level comedy" while opposition leader Uddhav Thackeray saying there was nothing wrong in what the comedian said. Congress and CPI (M) also came out in Kamra's support.
On Sunday night, Shiv Sena members damaged the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, where Kamra's show took place, as well as a hotel in whose premises the club is located. Kamra said the vandalism of the venue was "senseless" and equated it to someone overturning a lorry carrying tomatoes because they didn't like butter chicken they were served.
"To the Mob That Decided That Habitat Should Not Stand: An entertainment venue is merely a platform. A space for all sorts of shows. Habitat (or any other venue) is not responsible for my comedy, nor does it have any power or control over what I say or do. Neither does any political party."
The comedian also spoke about his right to freedom of speech and expression while calling out "politicians threatening to teach him a lesson".
"Your inability to take a joke at the expense of a powerful public figure does not change the nature of my right. As far as I know, it is not against the law to poke fun at our leaders and the circus that is our political system. However, I am willing to cooperate with the police and courts for any lawful action taken against me.
"But will the law be fairly and equally deployed against those who have decided that vandalism is the appropriate response to being offended by a joke?"
Mumbai's civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation visited the ransacked venue and said they had razed a temporary structure in the open space of the hotel, according to officials.
Kamra criticized the BMC for tearing the place down without prior notice.
The comedian said for his next show, he would perhaps opt for "Elphinstone bridge, or any other structure in Mumbai" in need of speedy demolition.

In the midst of an ongoing controversy surrounding comedian Kunal Kamra's recent remarks, several prominent political figures, including Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan and Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs, have voiced their support for Kamra's freedom of expression.
They have also criticized the actions of those who vandalized the Mumbai venue where his show was filmed.
Jaya Bachchan expressed concerns about the constraints on free speech in India, asking, "What will become of us if there is a restriction on speaking? We are already in a difficult situation. You might be told only to speak on certain topics and not to interview people like me," she remarked to reporters.
Bachchan criticized the current political climate, referring to instances of violence and the recent political shifts in Maharashtra, questioning whether it disrespects Balasaheb Thackeray's legacy.
Arvind Sawant, a Shiv Sena (UBT) MP, also defended Kamra, stating that everything said in the comedian's special, "Naya Bharat," accurately reflects the opposition's allegations.
Drawing parallels to the past, Sawant cited Balasaheb Thackeray's legacy as a cartoonist who often satirized political figures, suggesting that such freedom of expression is a cornerstone of democracy.
Sawant called for strict action against those involved in vandalizing the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, Mumbai, urging that an FIR should be registered against the perpetrators. "Can't they handle criticism?" he questioned.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi condemned the vandalism as a sign of increasing intolerance. "This kind of behavior shows a troubling lack of tolerance. Instead of engaging in hooliganism, they could file a police complaint if they disagree," Chaturvedi told ANI.
She noted the irony of the reaction, as Kamra's joke didn't even explicitly name Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, hinting that the response underscores the truth in Kamra's remarks.
The incident escalated at the Habitat Comedy Club when members of the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) youth wing disrupted a live performance, causing significant damage.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra should apologise for insulting Deputy CM Eknath Shinde with his remarks, and asserted that "urban Naxals" and "Left liberals" supporting such acts will be taught a lesson.
Talking to reporters in the state legislature complex, Fadnavis said Kamra's action was condemnable.
During his performance at the Habitat Studio at the Unicontinental hotel in Mumbai's Khar area, Kamra had referred to Shiv Sena leader Shinde as a "traitor" and went on to sing a parody on him.
Kamra used a modified version of a Hindi song from the movie 'Dil Toh Pagal Hai' to describe the 2022 rebellion of Shinde against his then boss Uddhav Thackeray.
Fadnavis said, "The 2024 assembly polls results have shown who is 'gaddar' (traitor) and who is 'khuddar' (self-respecting). People have put a stamp of approval on Shinde being the true inheritor of (Shiv Sena founder) Bal Thackeray's legacy."
He said the people have defeated those who betrayed Bal Thackeray's ideology.
"People have the freedom of satire and comedy. But insulting (a person) deliberately is not allowed. Kamra showed the red book of the Constitution which is carried by Rahul Gandhi. Both have not read the Constitution. He cannot justify his action by showing the book," the CM said.
"The Constitution says when you attack others' freedom, your own freedom is restricted," Fadnavis said.
Kamra cannot justify his actions and escape action by showing Rahul Gandhi's Constitution (red book), he said.
Speaking in the state assembly after the issue figured in the House, Fadnavis reiterated that Kamra has insulted Shinde.
"We have no objection to political satire. We like and appreciate it. But insulting people on constitutional posts and targeting institutions will not be tolerated, and the 'urban Naxals' and 'Left liberals' supporting such acts will be taught a lesson," he said.
The "reckless" misuse of the freedom of speech will not be tolerated, the CM said.
How can comments made by influencer Ranveer Allahbadia about parents be tolerated? Fadnavis asked.
Allahbadia had been in the eye of storm over his comments during a show on parents and sex.
 "We will not succumb to the pressure and take strictest possible action," Fadnavis said.
He said Kamra has a history of making low-level comments on the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India and the judiciary.
"His modus operandi is to create a controversy for publicity," the chief minister said.
Fadnavis said Kamra has now targeted Deputy CM Shinde, and the people of Maharashtra showed through the 2024 assembly polls mandate that who is "khuddar" (self-respecting) and who is "gaddar" (traitor).
"Is Kamra bigger than the people of Maharashtra?" he asked.
The people of Maharashtra have shown that Shinde is the true inheritor of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray's ideology.
"Kamra's aim was to belittle Shinde in the eyes of the people. The opposition is supporting such a talk and one wonders whether Kamra is hand-in-glove with the opposition. He has posted a picture of himself with a red copy of the Constitution book which Rahul Gandhi carries," Fadnavis said.
"When you attack the freedom of others, your freedom is restricted. If you insult people on constitutional posts to create disturbances by taking supari (contract) to get publicity, it will not be tolerated. No one will object to stand-up comedy and satire. If we behave recklessly in the garb of freedom of speech and expression, it will not be tolerated. Strict action will be taken as per law," the CM said.
Earlier, the House witnessed uproarious scenes over the Kamra show row, with Shiv Sena members demanding strict action against the stand-up comedian.
Arjun Khotkar (of Shiv Sena) raised the issue and demanded strict action against Kamra.
Minister Shambhuraj Desai also supported Khotkar's demand.
Members of the ruling benches were on their feet shouting slogans.
Speaker Rahul Narwekar then adjourned the House for five minutes.
On Sunday night, several Shiv Sena workers went to the studio and allegedly vandalised it and the hotel, according to police.
The Mumbai police on Monday registered an FIR against Kamra for allegedly making defamatory remarks against Shinde, officials earlier said.
The police also arrested Shiv Sena functionary Rahul Kanal and 11 others for ransacking the venue at the Mumbai hotel where Kamra made the controversial "traitor" jibe against Shinde, an official said.

The police also registered a case against nearly 40 Shiv Sena workers for allegedly vandalising the Habitat Studio in Mumbai's Khar area, where Kamra's show with "gaddar" (traitor) jibe at Shinde was filmed, and a hotel where the studio is located, they said.
Kamra taunted Shinde using a modified version of a Hindi song from the film "Dil To Pagal Hai", eliciting laughter from the audience.
While leaders of the ruling Mahayuti termed Kamra a "contract comedian" and warned he would be forced to flee the country, the opposition dubbed the FIR against him as "mockery of law" and said police should specify words which can't be used to criticise the government.
Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel said the party workers will not allow Kamra to move on streets if he doesn't apologise to Shinde in two days.

Several Shiv Sena workers on Sunday night gathered outside Hotel Unicontinental, where the Habitat Studio is located. They allegedly ransacked the studio and the hotel premises, the police said.

After a video went viral showing Kamra allegedly using defamatory words against Shinde, MLA Patel lodged a police complaint.

The MIDC police registered an FIR against Kamra under BNS sections 353(1)(b) (statements conducing to public mischief) and 356(2) (defamation), an official said.

In the nearly 2-minute video, Kamra also mocked the ruling NCP and Shiv Sena, the MIDC police official said, adding a probe was on.

Another FIR was registered by the Khar police against 19 Shiv Sena functionaries, including Rahul Kanal, Kunal Sarmalkar and Akshay Panvelkar, and 15 to 20 unidentified persons for allegedly vandalising the studio and ransacking the hotel properties, an official said.
Kanal and Sarmalkar were brought to Khar police station and notices were served to them, he said.
The police have also detained several Shiv Sena workers involved in vandalism, the official said.

Panvelkar, Kanal, Sarmarkar and other Shiv Sainiks entered the hotel and studio and damaged them, Khar police sub-inspector Vijay Saed, on whose complaint the FIR was lodged, alleged in his statement.

They shouted slogans like "Shiv Sena Zindabad". When the police intervened, they allegedly pushed the on-duty personnel and also manhandled hotel staffers. They were later brought to the police station for further probe, Saed said.
State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who visited the Khar police station, said the studio where the programme was shot was illegal.
"We will not tolerate mocking of our leader. Police and civic authorities should take action against them. I came to the police station to check on police action on our workers," the Shiv Sena leader added.
Sena MP Naresh Mhaske warned Kamra that he would no longer be allowed to roam freely in Maharashtra and would be chased by the party workers throughout the country.
"You will be forced to flee India," he said in a message.
Calling Kamra a "contract comedian", Mhaske said he should not have stepped on the "tail of a snake".
"Once the fangs are out, there will be dire consequences," he said.
The MP also alleged the comedian had accepted money from Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and was targeting Shinde.
He accused political opponents of hiring stand-up comedians like Kamra for publicity.
The Shiv Sena will not tolerate such insults and the party workers would ensure a strong response to Kamra's remarks, he added.
Sena MLA Patel said he would show "Kamra his level" and asked him to apologise.
"Our Shiv Sainiks will blacken his face wherever he is found," he said.
BJP MLA Ram Kadam said Kamra seems to be targeting Shinde on someone's instructions.
"As he has crossed the limits, we will blacken his face wherever we spot him," Kadam said.
On the other side, AAP Mumbai president Preeti Sharma Menon supported Kamra.
"We support @kunalkamra88 unequivocally. Shame @Dev_Fadnavis - Eknath shinde has just shown that you have zero powers as home minister. You couldn't keep peace in Nagpur and now you have brought vandalism to Mumbai!" she said.
State Congress general secretary Sachin Sawant said in the case where a simple non-cognizable offence can't stand, an FIR is registered and this is "mockery of law".
The aim is to scare political opponents, he claimed.
The ruling alliance leaders are openly issuing threats and making provocative statements, but the government doesn't move, he charged.
The police should publish a list of words which cannot be used when criticising the government, and it should also declare what is okay for the ruling alliance leaders, Sawant said.
State Congress chief spokesperson Atul Londhe said, "Why is there so much intolerance? We do not support such vandalism. If sentiments are getting easily hurt, then they could have filed a complaint against him at the police station."
"Kamra is a stand-up comedian and he made some commentary about the current political scenario in the state. If you are against it, then ban the entire stand-up comedy form. Why afraid of mere commentary? It is against freedom of speech," he said.

Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Monday invited stand-up comedians Kunal Kamra and Munawar Faruqui to hold a programme at Bhopal in the BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh after they were recently denied permission for shows in Bengaluru.
Faruqui was last month denied nod to hold a show at Bengaluru in Karnataka amid the protest by the Hindu right wing outfits. A few days later, Kamra, a vocal critic of the government, said his stand-up shows scheduled to be held in Bengaluru were cancelled after the organisers received threats.
On Monday, Digvijaya Singh in a Twitter post said, "I will organise a show for you Kunal and Munawar in Bhopal. All responsibility will be mine. Only condition is that the subject of comedy will be Digvijaya Singh. Sanghis (RSS cadre) should not object to this!! Don't be afraid!! Give the date and time as per your convenience. All your conditions are accepted." In his post, the Rajya Sabha member also tagged a news article related to Kamra.
Earlier this year, Faruqui had spent a month in jail at Indore in MP following a complaint by a BJP MLA's son in January for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

The cancellation of Kamra's shows come just days after another stand up comedian Munnawar Faruqui was denied permission to perform in the city with the police calling him a "controversial figure".
Kamra, who has criticised the BJP-led NDA government over a number of issues in the past, posted a sarcastic statement on Twitter to inform his followers and detractors about the cancellations of his shows that were to be held in the city in the coming days.
"Hello Bangalore people. I'm happy to inform that my shows in Bangalore which were scheduled over the next 20 days have been cancelled. They've been cancelled for two reasons.
"Firstly, we didn't get special permission to seat 45 people in the venue that can seat more. Secondly, threats have been made to shut down the venue if I were to ever perform there. I guess this is also part of the Covid protocol & new guidelines. I suppose I am seen as a variant of the virus now," the comedian said.
Kamra said now that his shows have also been cancelled after Faruqui, it proves that the "ruling class" is at least trying to "oppress with equality".
"For those on Twitter that have been wondering how 'A Kamra goes on to perform while a Farooqui has had to quit comedy' we can find solace in the fact that the ruling class is at least trying to oppress with equality.
"Maybe if we continue down the road of equal oppression, we would get to a point of equal liberation, in a post climate change era," he said.
He further listed five steps to get a comedian's show cancelled.
"If they use this method & a show is not cancelled I'll give up being a stand up comedian. Step no 1 - Inform police that there could be violence. Step no 2 - Inform venue owner there could be violence. Step no 3 - Inform artist that if he/she/they will be coming there will surely be violence. Step no 4 - Remind the venue of what could happen if the artist manages to do a show despite the threats.
"Step no 5 - Be ready with celebration memes that show your victory and togetherness in missing the point. You can also apply this formula to an artist that you don't agree with, you don't find funny or don't like their art..." Besides Kamra and Faruqui, comedian Vir Das also faced several complaints and online trolling for his 'Two Indias' monologue in the US recently.
