Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to Kuwait from Saturday in what will be the first trip to the Gulf nation by an Indian prime minister in 43 years.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), announcing the visit, said it will provide an opportunity to further strengthen the "multifaceted" ties between India and Kuwait.
Modi is paying the visit at the invitation of Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, it said.
During the visit, Modi will hold discussions with the leadership of Kuwait and will also interact with the Indian community.
"India and Kuwait share traditionally close and friendly relations which are rooted in history and have been underpinned by economic and strong people to people linkages," the MEA said in a statement.
The last Indian prime minister to visit Kuwait was Indira Gandhi in 1981.
India is among the top trading partners of Kuwait. The Indian community is the largest expatriate community in Kuwait.
"The visit will provide an opportunity to further strengthen the multifaceted ties between India and Kuwait," the MEA added.
Kuwait is among India's top trading partners, with bilateral trade valued at USD 10.47 billion in the financial year 2023-24.
Kuwait is India's sixth largest crude supplier, meeting 3 percent of the country's energy needs.
Indian exports to Kuwait reached USD 2 billion for the first time, while investments by the Kuwait Investment Authority in India exceed USD 10 billion.
India and Kuwait have enjoyed traditionally friendly relations, with links dating back to pre-oil Kuwait when maritime trade with India was the backbone of its economy.
Kuwait's economy revolved around its fine harbour and maritime activities which included ship building, pearl diving, fishing and voyages to India on wooden dhows carrying dates, Arabian horses and pearls that were traded for wood, cereals, clothes and spices, according to people tracking the ties between the two nations.
The Indian Rupee remained legal tender in Kuwait until 1961, a symbol of the enduring economic and cultural ties.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established in 1961, with India initially represented by a trade commissioner.
Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jabar Al Sabah visited India on a private visit in July 2017.
The last high-level visit from either side was that of the prime minister of Kuwait to India in 2013.

According to an Indian Express report, the victims worked for a firm called NBTC whose Managing Director is a Malayali businessman KG Abraham.
Ironically, Abraham had co-produced a film Aadujeevitham or 'The Goat Life' which portrayed the trials and tribulations of a Malayali immigrant labourer in Saudi Arabia. The movie which released earlier this year made over ₹150 crore.
Months after the film's release, the fire tragedy has drawn attention to the movie and its co-producer.
NBTC which started with 90 workers has expanded its operations into oil and gas, among other sectors and now employs around 15,000 people.
Meanwhile, Kuwaiti authorities have vowed to promptly investigate the incident.

An Indian Air Force (IAF) flight carrying the mortal remains of the Indians who died in the tragic fire incident in Kuwait two days ago, landed at the international airport here on Friday.
The IAF C30J aircraft is carrying the bodies of the Indians and of them 31 were received at the airport here.
The 31 bodies include 23 Keralites, 7 Tamilians and one person from Karnataka, officials said.
Officials had said that 49 people were killed in the fire in the Al-Mangaf building on June 12 and majority of them were Indians; the remaining were Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian and Nepali nationals.
The building in southern Kuwait's Mangaf area housed around 195 migrant workers.

The tragic fire in Kuwait, which claimed 49 lives, including 40 Indians, has once again highlighted the precarious living conditions of many Indian expatriates in the Gulf. These workers often live in cramped quarters, such as semi-constructed buildings or labour camps, like the one in Mangaf where the fire broke out.
Despite the harsh conditions, many Indians opt for jobs in West Asia due to higher wages compared to that available in India.
<h3>Indians in Kuwait</h3>
Kuwait is home to a significantly large Indian community. The country has a population of about 42 lakh, of which 21% (10 lakh) are Indians, who comprise 30% of its workforce. The majority of these expatriates come from states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab.
<h3>Types of Jobs</h3>
The Indian workforce in Kuwait is diverse. Many Indians work in skilled professions like engineering, medicine, accountancy, and IT. Others are employed as technicians, nurses, and management consultants. Additionally, a large number of Indians work in semi-skilled and unskilled jobs, including carpentry, masonry, driving, domestic help, and even food and courier delivery services.
Though Indians are in high demand in Kuwait, they don't always get paid well, especially the unskilled labourers.
Under the Internationa Labour Organization's guideline, the Indian government has set minimum referral wages (MRW) for different categories of workers abroad to ensure fair compensation for them. These wages range from $300 to $1,050 per month, depending on the job and experience.
Indian workers must register with the Ministry of External Affairs' eMigrate portal to be eligible for the protection.&nbsp;
However, a large part of the job market in Gulf countries -- Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain -- operate outside these regulations.
Many Indian workers endure tough conditions, especially during the scorching summer months, and face challenges such as discrimination, abuse, and scams.

The number of people from Kerala who died in the Kuwait fire tragedy has risen to 24, while seven seriously injured persons from the southern state are being treated in various hospitals in the Gulf country, according to a senior official of NORKA Roots on Thursday.
The Department of Non-Resident Keralites' Affairs (NORKA) was constituted by the state government in 1996 to address the grievances of non-resident Keralites both in India and abroad and to establish a sustainable partnership with them.
Ajith Kolasseri, who is holding additional charge of the NORKA Chief Executive Officer, said according to the information provided by its help desk in Kuwait unofficially, the number of casualties among Keralites is rising.
It was 12 in the morning, later updated to 19, and now it stands at 24.
Earlier, the state government had said that as per the information received by it, 19 people from Kerala died in the incident.
Seven seriously injured Keralites are being treated in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of various hospitals in Kuwait, he told reporters.
Many injured persons have been discharged from hospitals, he said.
The official said the names and details of the victims could be provided only after confirmation from the External Affairs Ministry.
The NORKA help desk is coordinating with the Indian Embassy and the mortuary departments in the hospitals in Kuwait to expedite the paperwork for bringing the bodies of the victims back home.
According to the Kuwaiti authorities, a devastating fire in a seven-storey building in Mangaf, Ahmadi Governorate, Kuwait, has claimed the lives of 49 foreign workers, including around 40 Indians, and injured 50 others.
The blaze, which started in the kitchen, erupted around 4 am on Wednesday while most of the 195 migrant workers were asleep.
The fire produced thick black smoke, leading to the suffocation of many victims, according to officials from the Kuwait Interior Ministry and the fire department.&nbsp;

Around 40 Indians are understood to have died and over 50 injured in the blaze in a building housing around 195 migrant workers, officials said.
"Spoke to Kuwaiti FM Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya on the fire tragedy in Kuwait. Apprised of the efforts made by Kuwaiti authorities in that regard. Was assured that the incident would be fully investigated and that responsibility will be fixed," Jaishankar said on 'X'.
"Urged the early repatriation of the mortal remains of those who lost their lives. He emphasised that those injured were getting the requisite medical attention," he said.
"We will review the situation after MoS @KVSinghMPGonda reaches Kuwait tomorrow," he said.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh is urgently travelling to Kuwait following a direction from Prime Minister Narendra Modi primarily to oversee assistance to Indians injured in the fire and to ensure early repatriation of mortal remains of those killed.

A massive fire engulfed a multi-storey building in Kuwait housing foreign workers, mostly Indians, early on Wednesday, killing at least 49 people and injuring more than 50 others, according to officials.
Most deaths were due to smoke inhalation while residents were sleeping, and a significant number of occupants were evacuated, they added.
The fire started in a kitchen in the six-storey building in the Mangaf area in Kuwait's southern Ahmadi Governorate, officials said, adding that the building reportedly had nearly 200 people living in it, who are workers of the same company.
In a statement, the Interior Ministry said that the death toll from the tragic fire has reached 49, the Kuwait Times newspaper reported.
The ministry said that criminal evidence department personnel are currently working on identifying the victims on site and revealing the cause of the fire and added that strict measures will be taken against building owners who violate the law.
"Unfortunately, we received a report of a fire at... exactly 6:00 am (0830 IST) in the Mangaf area," Major General Eid Al-Owaihan, head of the interior ministry&rsquo;s General Department of Criminal Evidence, said.
The majority of the deceased were Indian nationals from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and north Indian states. Their ages ranged between 20 and 50 years, he was quoted as saying by English language daily Arab Times.
The building is rented by the NBTC group.
Sources said that five firefighters sustained injuries during the rescue operation.
"In connection with the tragic fire accident involving Indian workers today, the Embassy has put in place an emergency helpline number: +965-65505246. All concerned are requested to connect over this helpline for updates. Embassy remains committed to render all possible assistance," the Indian Embassy in Kuwait said in a post on X.
Indians constitute 21 per cent (1 million) of the total population of Kuwait and 30 per cent of its workforce (approximately 9 lakhs).
"The fire mishap in Kuwait City is saddening. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. The Indian Embassy in Kuwait is closely monitoring the situation and working with the authorities there to assist the affected," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on X.
At the direction of Prime Minister Modi, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh is rushing to Kuwait to oversee assistance to Indians injured in the fire and to ensure early repatriation of mortal remains of those killed.
"Deeply shocked by the news of the fire incident in Kuwait City. There are reportedly over 40 deaths and over 50 have been hospitalized. Our Ambassador has gone to the camp. We are awaiting further information," External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in a post on X.
"Deepest condolences to the families of those who tragically lost their lives. Wish early and full recovery to those who have been injured. Our Embassy will render the fullest assistance to all concerned in this regard," he added.
Indian Ambassador Adarsh Swaika visited the fire incident site and later hospitals where over 50 Indian workers injured in today&rsquo;s fire incident have been admitted.
"Amb @AdarshSwaika1 visited the tragic fire-incident site in Mangaf to ascertain the situation. Embassy is in constant touch with relevant Kuwaiti law enforcement, fire service and health authorities for necessary action and emergency medical health care," the Indian mission said.
He visited the Al-Adan hospital where over 30 Indian workers injured in fire have been admitted. He met several patients and assured them of full assistance from the Embassy. Almost all are reported to be stable by hospital authorities, the mission said.
Ambassador Swaika also visited Farwaniya Hospital, where 6 injured workers, expected to be mostly Indians, were admitted. Hospital authorities confirmed that 4 of them have been released, one has been shifted to Jahra Hospital and one in the ward is reportedly stable, the Indian mission said in another post on X.
He visited Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital, where 11 injured workers have been admitted. Ten of them are expected to be released today and one in hospital is reportedly stable. He met with patients still in hospital and assured them of the Embassy's full support.
"Amb @AdarshSwaika1 visited Jahra Hospital, where 6 workers, understood to be Indians, injured in today's fire incident, have been admitted. They are reportedly stable. Another 6 are expected to be shifted to Jahra hospital today from the Mangaf site," the Indian mission wrote on X.
The Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber al-Sabah on Wednesday ordered authorities to probe the massive fire and vowed to hold accountable those responsible for the tragedy.
Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah condoled the deaths and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousuf Al-Sabah, serving as the First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior, and Minister of Defence, has ordered police to arrest the owner of the Mangaf building where the fatal blaze occurred Wednesday, the building's janitor, as well as the owner of the company responsible for the workers pending the end of the criminal evidence personnel's examination of the scene, the Kuwait Times reported.
"What happened today is a result of the greed of the company and building owners," the minister said in a statement as he visited the fire scene.
He said that he gave orders to Kuwait Municipality and the Public Authority for Manpower to launch immediate action to address similar violations where large numbers of workers are crammed into one residential building, and make sure that all safety requirements are in place in order to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Engineer Saud Al-Dabbous, the Director General of Kuwait Municipality, suspended several key officials, including the Deputy Director General for Hawalli and Al-Ahmadi Governorate Affairs, the Acting Director of the Al-Ahmadi Municipality Branch, the Director of the Audit, Follow-up, and Engineering Department, and the Head of the Violations Removal Department in Al-Ahmadi, Arab Times daily reported.
"These suspensions were enacted in the interest of public safety, pending the completion of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident," the paper said.
Eyewitnesses said that the sight of flames engulfing the building instilled fear among onlookers.
One eyewitness recalled an incident where a resident worker leaped from the fifth floor, meeting a tragic end as he struck the balcony's edge.

"We have not seen so much hail during the winter season in 15 years," Muhammad Karam, a former director of Kuwait's meteorological department, told AFP.
Pictures and videos of southern roads partially blanketed in hail and ice spread online to celebrate the rare weather event.

The US Air Force said Saturday it was the subject of a “propaganda attack” by a previously unheard-of Iraqi militant group that falsely claimed it had launched a drone attack targeting American troops at an air base in Kuwait.
The statement by the Air Force's 386th Air Expeditionary Wing came hours after the group calling itself Al-Waretheen, or “The Inheritors," put out an online statement claiming that on Aug. 12, it targeted Kuwait's Ali Al Salem Air Base. The statement included a video showing a drone being launched from a stand, but offered no evidence of an attack or any damage done at the base.
The statement claimed the alleged attack aimed to avenge the US drone strike that killed a prominent Iranian Revolution Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad in January 2020.
The air base is located a few dozen kilometers (miles) from the Iraqi border.
“The misinformation falsely stated an Iranian militia group used (drones) to carry out an attack on base,” the Air Force statement to The Associated Press said. “No such attack occurred.” The statement suggests the U.S. believes that Al-Waretheen is likely an Iranian group, though it described itself as Iraqi.
The Air Force added that the online claim “only aims to deceive their audience in believing a lie" and that the Air Force and Kuwait “continue to project air power throughout the region without disruption.” Kuwait, a small, oil-rich nation bordering Iraq and Saudi Arabia also near Iran, is considered a major non-NATO ally of the United States. Kuwait and the U.S. have had a close military partnership since America launched the 1991 Gulf War to expel Iraqi troops after Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein invaded the country.

A series of militant groups that analysts believe have ties back to Iran have claimed attacks they say targeted US troops in Iraq over recent years. However, those roadside bombings targeted Iraqi contractors supplying American forces in the country.
The claim also comes as what have been described as the final round of negotiations continue between Iran and the US over Tehran's tattered nuclear deal with world powers.

Some 13,500 American troops are stationed in Kuwait, which also hosts U.S. Army Central's forward headquarters. Those forces have supported the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 and later operations against the Islamic State group.
Kuwait did not immediately acknowledge the claimed attack. Its Information Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday night.
Kuwait's Al-Qabas newspaper, quoting anonymous &ldquo;responsible&rdquo; sources, called the claims about an attack &ldquo;completely untrue.&rdquo; Satellite photos from Planet Labs PBC analyzed by the AP since Aug. 12 show no apparent damage at the base.
A series of militant groups that analysts believe have ties back to Iran have claimed attacks they say targeted US troops in Iraq over recent years. However, those roadside bombings targeted Iraqi contractors supplying American forces in the country.
The claim also comes as what have been described as the final round of negotiations continue between Iran and the US over Tehran's tattered nuclear deal with world powers.&nbsp;

We should not encourage such anti-India elements."
In response, Tharoor said that he does not endorse the individual in question, but is concerned about the sentiment that the person is conveying. The Congress leader said, "I don't endorse this individual, whom I'd never heard of, but am concerned about the sentiment he conveys, which is sadly shared by many who are friends of India. While accepting the embassy's view, I urge the Government of India not to give ammo to such anti-India elements by condoning misconduct here."

Sri Lanka, India battle fire on board oil tanker, one crew dead
