The T-72 tank with five soldiers on board sank due to flash floods while they were crossing the river, the officials said.

Five Army soldiers are feared drowned after they were swept away while crossing a river in a T-72 tank near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Nyoma-Chushul area in Ladakh early Saturday, officials said.
They said the incident occurred near Mandir Morh, 148 kilometres from here, during an exercise around 1 am.
The T-72 tank with five soldiers on board sank due to flash floods while they were crossing the river, the officials said.
A rescue operation has been launched. Further details are awaited.

Namgyal shot into the limelight after he delivered a fiery speech in parliament on the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

No headway was made in discussions between the Centre and civil society leaders from Ladakh, who have been demanding statehood and other Constitutional safeguards for the region.
Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday met a six-member delegation of the Apex Body, Leh (ABL) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) from the Union Territory, and assured them that the High Powered Committee (HPC) on Ladakh would look into their demands, the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement.
The ministry said the (HPC) headed by Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai has been working with representatives of the ABL and the KDA, and that a sub-committee is also actively engaged with the Ministry of Law and other experts to iron out various issues pertaining to land, employment and constitutional safeguards.
The second meeting of the said sub-committee was held on Monday.
However, the ABL and the KDA issued a statement saying their sub-committee failed to make any headway after two back-to-back meetings with central government functionaries.
The organisations also said they have decided to consult with the people of Ladakh to devise a future course of action.
The ABL and the KDA have been demanding statehood for Ladakh, the inclusion of the Union territory in the 6th Schedule of the Constitution and the setting up of an exclusive public service commission for the high-altitude region.
According to a statement issued by the two organisations, the sub-committee held a meeting with officials of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the advisor of the Union Territory of Ladakh which "ended without any concrete outcome".
Subsequently, the sub-committee held a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence and that "too didn't result in any positive outcome," the ABL-KDA statement said.
The sub-committee was formed following a meeting held on February 19 between the HPC and a 14-member delegation of the ABL and the KDA, representing various organisations of the Union Territory.
Thupstan Chhewang, Chering Dorjay Lakruk and Nawang Rigzin Jora, representing the ABL, and Qamar Ali Akhoon, Asgar Ali Karbalai and Sajjad Kargili, representing the KDA, are members of the sub-committee.
Akhoon, Chhewang, Lakruk and Karbalai signed the press statement issued on Monday.
The other demands of the delegation include two Lok Sabha seats (one for Kargil and one for Leh) and job opportunities for the residents of the Union Territory, sources said earlier.
Ladakh currently has one Lok Sabha constituency.
Ladakh, which no longer has any Assembly constituency, was earlier part of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution, which gave a special status to Jammu and Kashmir, were abrogated on August 5, 2019, and the erstwhile state was bifurcated into the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
According to the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, Jammu and Kashmir has been made a Union Territory with a Legislative Assembly and Ladakh a Union Territory without any Assembly.

Councillor of Chushul, Konchok Stanzin, shared a tweet about the incident in which he hailed the nomads and said, "See how our local people are showing their bravery in front of the PLA claiming that the area they are stopping is our nomad's grazing land. "
Konchok further said, "PLA stopping our nomads from grazing in our territory. Seems it is never a never-ending process due to different lines of perceptions. But I salute our nomads, who always stand to protect our land and stand as the second guardian force of the nation."
While speaking with the Indian Express, the councillor said that this incident took place on January 2 and the issue has been resolved. Konchok also said that the Chinese soldiers had come about a kilometre inside the Indian territory at the time.&nbsp;

Apparently referring to Pakistan, the Army commander said the neighbouring country has orchestrated the terrorist attacks in the Poonch-Rajouri region as they did not like the ongoing development work.

The northern border is stable but "not normal", a top Army commander said on Sunday, referring to the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Ladakh region.
Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command, said five of the seven friction points in eastern Ladakh, where the Indian Army and the Chinese PLA are locked in a standoff since May 2020, have been resolved and talks are underway for the remaining areas.
"The northern border area is stable but it is not normal or I can say it's sensitive," he told reporters here.
Apparently referring to Pakistan, the Army commander said the neighbouring country has orchestrated the terrorist attacks in the Poonch-Rajouri region as they did not like the ongoing development work here.
"There was prosperity and improvement in the lives of people in Poonch-Rajouri area. Investments were coming in and people were getting jobs. Our neighbouring country did not like this atmosphere of peace and prosperity. That's why they have been promoting militancy in the area but we have launched counter operations," he said, expressing confidence that they will control militant activities in the coming days.
Lt Gen Dwivedi said the coordination among police, military and local people needs to be improved in the area.
"The number of police stations is being increased while we are carrying out some reorientation as well. This will help us in controlling the situation," he said.
The Army commander said 2023 has been declared as "zero-infiltration year" as no terrorist was able to come in through the Line of Control.
"...But as you said many terrorists are coming. We have taken action.... If you see last year, only 21 terrorists killed were locals, the remaining 55 were foreigners. In 2022, 121 terrorist recruitments took place but in 2023 only 19 have taken place," he told reporters.
He said a lot of positive changes have taken place in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.
"A lot of changes have taken place in the past four years. And all the changes have been for good, be it development of infrastructure, tourist arrivals or outside investments. Overall, it is good for the public, and Jammu and Kashmir is playing an important role in nation building," he said.
He was in Srinagar to take part in an Armed Forces Veterans' Day event.
The Armed Forces Veterans' Day is celebrated on January 14 every year as it was on this day in 1953 that the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, Field Marshal K M Cariappa, formally retired from the service.&nbsp;

According to the officials, the National Conference (NC) has so far won 12 seats while its ally Congress registered victory in 10. The BJP managed to win just two seats, while independent candidates registered victories on two seats.

With the Congress winning several seats in the elections to the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, the party said it is a direct impact of Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also took a swipe at the media saying "the national media will blank it out, but trends coming in show Congress leading convincingly in the elections to the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil with an almost complete wipeout of the BJP." "This is a direct impact of Rahul Gandhi continuing Bharat Jodo Yatra in Ladakh last month," Ramesh said in a post on X.
Congress general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal said the party has registered a resounding victory in the Ladakh hill council elections after 10 years.
"Along with our INDIA partner National Conference, we have swept the entire region in its first election after the abrogation of Art. 370.
"Rahul Gandhi ji's Bharat Jodo Yatra last month across the region has given people of Ladakh and Kargil the faith that the Congress and INDIA have a deep concern about the issues they face, and the need for their democratic sentiments to be given a voice," he said on X.
"Congratulations to all victorious candidates," Venugopal said, adding "I am confident this will usher a new democratic dawn in Ladakh and Kargil".
Another Congress leader P Chidambaram said the LAHDC poll result is a "resounding victory for I.N.D.I.A. and a crushing defeat for the BJP".
"The results show that the people have totally repudiated the misguided agenda of the BJP, the revocation of Art. 370 and the creation of Union Territories out of a State. "If elections are held in the Kashmir valley, the results will not be different," he said.
Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate also said the people of Ladakh-Kargil have spoken decisively. &nbsp;"A resounding mandate for us in the Ladakh-Kargil Autonomous Hill Council elections - the first electoral exercise since abolition of Art 370.
"In August Rahul Gandhi ji's Bharat Jodo Yatra all across Leh-Ladakh met and assured the people of the region that their voices matter," she said.
The National Conference and the Congress together won 22 seats in the LAHDC polls, officials said on Sunday.
The elections to the LAHDC-Kargil was the first poll to be held after Ladakh was carved out as a Union territory following the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution.
Twenty-six seats of the council went to polls on October 4. The administration nominates four members with voting rights to the 30-member council.
According to the officials, the National Conference (NC) won 12 seats, making it the single largest party, while its ally Congress registered victory in 10. The BJP won two seats, while two independent candidates also registered victory, they said.
The existing council headed by the NC's Feroz Ahmad Khan completed its five-year term on October 1. The new council will be in place before October 11.

The Pangong Frozen lake marathon will be the first of its kind to ever take place across the globe at this altitude.
&ldquo;On 20th February Adventure Sports foundation of Ladakh (ASFL) in collaboration with Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Leh and Ladakh Tourism Department is going to organise India&rsquo;s first 21 km long Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon. It would be an attempt to make a &nbsp;Guinness world record for the world&rsquo;s highest frozen lake marathon,&rdquo; Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC Leh Advocate Tashi Gyalson said.&nbsp;
The purpose of the race is said to promote sustainable tourism and create awareness about climate and the environment as said by the Deputy commissioner of Leh.

Sonam Wangchuk, the engineer-turned-education reformer who inspired Aamir Khan's character in '3 Idiots', has said that the union territory of Ladakh was better off as a part of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi came down heavily on the Centre demanding the government to deal with China "firmly". The Congress MP said the people of the country will not tolerate Chinese "sitting on Indian land".
Addressing a press conference on the eve of the culmination of his 134-day Bharat Jodo Yatra, the Congress MP said that a Ladakhi delegation clearly said that 2000 square km of the Indian Territory was taken by the Chinese.
"Government is under the impression that the Chinese have not taken any land from India. A delegation from Ladakh clearly said that 2000 square km of Indian Territory was taken by the Chinese. They also said that many patrolling points that used to be in India are now firmly in Chinese hands," said Rahul Gandhi.
The Wayanad MP said the approach that the government was following by completely denying that the Chinese have taken our land is extremely dangerous as it would give them the confidence to do even more aggressive things.

We have to deal with the Chinese firmly and tell them they are sitting on our land, won't be tolerated," he further said.

Jaishankar was interacting with the audience in a question-answer session during the launch of 'Bharat Marg', the Marathi translation of his book 'The India Way', in Pune.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said some people deliberately spread wrong news about the China issue knowing it is not true for politics and by talking about some land, which was taken by China in 1962, they give the impression this happened recently, the remarks viewed as a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Jaishankar was interacting with the audience in a question-answer session during the launch of 'Bharat Marg', the Marathi translation of his book 'The India Way', in Pune.
He also said the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) is a technical matter and Indus commissioners of both countries will talk to each other on this issue.
Queried about some people or leaders from political parties lacking confidence in India while speaking about China (military stand-off), he said there are some people in the Opposition who have such thinking which he finds difficult to understand.

He, however, added sometimes such people spread wrong news or information about China on purpose "If you want to ask why they have no confidence, why are they misleading people, why they spread the wrong khabar (news) about China? How can I answer these questions? Because I know they are also doing politics. Sometimes they deliberately spread such news that they know is not true," Jaishankar added.
"Sometimes, they talk about some land, which was taken by China in 1962. But they will not tell you the truth. They will give you the impression that this thing happened yesterday," he said without taking names.
Notably, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had last September said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given "100 square kilometres of Indian territory" to China "without a fight," and asked the government how it will be retrieved. Jaishankar also said sometimes some people say there is "soch me kami" (lack of understanding) in him but in that case, he will approach the military leadership, Army, or Intelligence.
