An iconic garland worn by Mahatma Gandhi during the 1930 Dandi March was recently unsold in a UK auction. Despite its historical value, it didn’t meet its guide price. This artifact symbolizes the fight against British colonial rule in India.

The garland is composed of a large teardrop-shaped medallion of pink cloth backed on card, applied with silver and gold thread and sequins in an elaborate decorative pattern.

A tinselled garland presented to and worn by Mahatma Gandhi during the iconic Dandi March of the Indian freedom struggle in 1930 remains open for bids after it failed to meet its GBP 20-30,000 guide price estimate at a UK auction this week.
The garland, in folded paper wrappers inscribed in Gujarati, is said to have been presented as the Salt March passed near the Ahmedabad home of Gandhi&rsquo;s personal physician Dr Balvantrai N Kanuga and was offered by his wife, Nanduben Kanuga. It came up for auction as part of an &lsquo;Islamic and Indian Art&rsquo; sale by Lyon &amp; Turnbull in London on Wednesday.
&ldquo;I am very surprised that the &lsquo;Gandhi Garland&rsquo; did not find a home on the day of the auction,&rdquo; said Kristina Sanne, Head of Sale at the auction house specialising in fine arts and antiques.
&ldquo;That said, we have had quite a lot of interest since the sale and hope to sell it to the highest bidder. It deserves a great home,&rdquo; she said.
The garland is composed of a large teardrop-shaped medallion of pink cloth backed on card, applied with silver and gold thread and sequins in an elaborate decorative pattern. It is edged with gold tinsel, with four smaller rectangular medallions and two triangular medallions similarly decorated and all connected with gold threads to form a necklace.
It passed on through descent from the collection of the late Dr Balvantrai N Kanuga, who along with his wife spent extensive periods at Mahatma Gandhi&rsquo;s Sabarmati Ashram as fellow satyagrahis. An amateur photograph of Gandhi being presented with the garland is inscribed on the reserve to read: &ldquo;Gandhiji Nanduben Kanuga. On the day of Dandi March. At Bungalow 12th March 1930&rdquo;.
The literature with the auction lot states: &ldquo;This garland was presented to Gandhi to mark an auspicious beginning to the Salt March, a major non-violent protest in India in March-April 1930. The Salt March was one of the most successful campaigns in Gandhi&rsquo;s struggle against British rule in India to win equal rights and freedom for Indians.
&ldquo;Starting at his ashram (religious retreat) at Sabarmati (near Ahmedabad), the march reached Dandi after a journey of some 240 miles. On the morning of April 6, Gandhi and his followers picked up handfuls of salt from along the seashore. In so doing, they technically &lsquo;produced&rsquo; salt and broke the law.&rdquo;
A photograph accompanying the garland shows Nanduben Kanuga placing the garland around Gandhi&rsquo;s neck and it is said to have been subsequently returned to the Kanugas after the march.
&ldquo;A few weeks later, Dr Kanuga further contributed to the cause by paying 1600 Rupees for the grains of salt that Gandhi had made at Dandi,&rdquo; reads the footnote.
While the garland remained unsold, the auction attracted fierce bidding for its other highlight lots with a very fine illustration from a Bhagavata Purana series from Punjab going under the hammer for GBP 27,700 - overshooting its estimate of GBP 15-20,000. A group of six Rajput Equestrian Portraits from Rajasthan exceeded their estimate to fetch GBP 20,160 and an album of Kalighat Paintings sold for GBP 21,420.
&ldquo;The Indian Art section saw frantic bidding throughout and was over 90 per cent sold. A real testament to the buoyancy of the Indian Art market,&rdquo; said Sanne.

Sadiq Khan on Saturday registered a decisive victory to secure a record third term as Mayor of London, as the local election results from England and Wales continued to reflect a strong swing in favour of the Opposition Labour Party.
The 53-year-old Pakistani-origin Labour candidate secured a massive 10,88,225 votes with a 43.8 per cent vote share, well ahead of the Conservative candidate Susan Hall&rsquo;s 8,12,397 votes &ndash; an impressive majority of over 2,75,000.
Delhi-born businessman Tarun Ghulati, contesting as an independent candidate among a total 13 mayoral candidates, secured 24,702 votes and came in tenth in the overall tally.
&ldquo;I am beyond humbled right now and express my deep gratitude to my fellow Londoners, and make this pledge to you: I promise to repay the trust you&rsquo;ve placed in me by working tirelessly to deliver the fairer, safer and greener, London you deserve,&rdquo; said Khan in his acceptance speech from the London mayoral headquarters of City Hall.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s been a difficult few months, we faced a campaign of non-stop negativity, but I couldn&rsquo;t be more proud that we answered fear mongering with facts, hate with hope, and attempts to divide with efforts to unite. We ran a campaign that was in keeping with the spirit and values of this great city, a city that regards our diversity, not as a weakness, but an almighty strength,&rdquo; he said, taking aim at some of the rhetoric from the Opposition.
&ldquo;It is truly an honour to be elected for a third term and to do so with record levels of support from Londoners, with an increased margin of victory. But today&rsquo;s not about making history, it&rsquo;s about shaping our future,&rdquo; he added.
Earlier, Khan&rsquo;s own camp and the BBC had already called the election in favour of Khan as borough-wise results poured in for the UK capital to show that he was on course to beat his nearest Conservative Party rival, Susan Hall, with a strong voter swing in favour of Labour.
Significantly, the UK capital&rsquo;s Muslim population did not seem to have punished the Labour Mayor for his party&rsquo;s failure to strongly condemn Israel over the Gaza conflict in the same way as other parts of the country had. Some of Khan&rsquo;s controversial policies, such as the high costs on drivers of vehicles falling under the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) tariff bracket as part of his anti-pollution drive for London, also did not result in a major dent in his overall popularity.
&ldquo;Sadiq Khan was absolutely the right candidate. He has got two terms of delivery behind him and I am confident that he has got another term of delivery in front of him,&rdquo; said Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer just before the results were declared.
The role of London Mayor represents the 8.9 million people living across the capital and has a budget of GBP 20.4 billion and is responsible for Transport for London (TfL) and has some control over roads, policing and housing in the city. Londoners also went to the polls on Thursday to vote for one of 14 local representatives on the London Assembly and 11 London wide Assembly members who hold the Mayor of London accountable.
The Labour Party continued its winning streak in most of the local elections, seen as reflective of the electorate&rsquo;s mood ahead of a general election expected later this year. Popular Labour incumbent Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham was re-elected with 63 per cent of the vote, who committed to get right back to work to see through his transport reforms and called for more powers over welfare and housing.
&ldquo;I am ready to fight harder than I have ever fought for anything before, for a Greater Manchester where people can live free from the fear of debt, hunger and eviction, and where everyone is set up to benefit from the growing success of our city region today,&rdquo; said Burnham in his victory speech.

"We envisage The London Tunnels achieving the same iconic status... as the London Eye," Murray said last week as he announced plans to list the venture on the London Stock Exchange.

The force said it was called just before 7:00 am (0600 GMT) after a vehicle drove into a house and reports that "people have been stabbed".
"At this time we understand the suspect went on to attack other members of the public and two police officers," a statement read.
"We are awaiting an update on the condition of those injured."
The Met, which polices an area of 620 square miles (1,605 square kilometres) of Greater London, said a 36-year-old man was arrested at the scene.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan said: "This incident does not appear to be terror-related."

The 20-year-old Swedish environmental campaigner was among more than two dozen people charged after protesters sought to block access to the luxury InterContinental Hotel in central London during last month's Energy Intelligence Forum, attended by some of the industry's top executives.
Thunberg was charged with breaching a section of the Public Order Act that allows police to impose limits on public assemblies. She and four other Fossil Free London protesters pleaded not guilty at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
Thunberg confirmed her details in court, but her address in Stockholm was not read out due to concerns over alleged threats she has received.
The protesters were granted unconditional bail ahead of a trial in London scheduled for February 2024.

A 27-year-old Indian-origin woman has been stabbed to death in north London and Scotland Yard on Wednesday said that two men have been arrested in connection with the murder.
The incident took place at a residential property in Neeld Crescent, Wembley on Tuesday.
While the murder victim is yet to be formally identified by police in the UK, reports from India indicate that it was Kontham Tejasvini &ndash; a young professional from Hyderabad.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled, following which the police are expected to formally release her identity.
The Metropolitan Police had earlier released an image of Brazilian national Keven Antonio Lourenco De Morais to seek the public&rsquo;s help in tracing the suspect behind the attack on Tuesday morning.
The 23-year-old has now been arrested from Harrow, near the crime scene of Neeld Crescent in Wembley.
&ldquo;He was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into custody at a north London police station,&rdquo; the Met Police said, without naming him again as he can now be named only if he is charged.
&ldquo;Officers attended along with the London Ambulance Service and two women were treated for stab injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency services, a 27-year-old woman sadly died at the scene. Her next of kin are yet to be informed,&rdquo; the Met Police said in a statement.
A second woman, aged 28 and also unnamed, was taken to hospital with stab injuries that were later assessed as not life-threatening.
Two other people, a 24-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder. While the man remains in custody, the woman has been released without further action, the police said.
Police officers were called to Neeld Crescent in Wembley, north London, at 9.59 am local time on Tuesday to reports of a double stabbing.
Two female victims were treated at the scene by the emergency services and while one died on the spot, the other remains in a north London hospital.
"This has been a fast-moving investigation and I would like to thank the public for sharing our appeal for information about this man. He is now in custody,&rdquo; said Detective Chief Inspector Linda Bradley, from the Met's Specialist Crime Command.
"I recognise the significant concern this incident has caused in the community and I would like to reassure the public that a dedicated team of detectives are working to establish what happened. Local officers will remain in the area over the coming days to respond to any concerns," she said.

Officers could soon be seen winding down their operation even as most of Whitehall, the main political hub of London between Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square, was cordoned off.
Officials inside Downing Street have reportedly been asked to stay indoors and it remains uncertain whether Sunak was in his office at the time of the incident.

Scotland Yard reacted by further blockading the area outside India House and several additional uniformed and mounted officers on horseback were deployed immediately to the area.

Around 2,000 protesters waving Khalistan flags descended upon the Indian High Commission in London on Wednesday for a planned demonstration and hurled objects and chanted slogans amid a heightened security presence and barricades.
The Indian High Commission countered by unfurling an additional humongous tricolour on the roof of its building, which seemed to rile the protesters further who then hurled coloured flares and water bottles towards the mission building and at police officers and media covering the protest.
Scotland Yard reacted by further blockading the area outside India House and several additional uniformed and mounted officers on horseback were deployed immediately to the area.
Unlike the violent disorder on Sunday when India House came under attack, the protesters were barricaded across the road with uniformed officers standing guard and patrolling the area throughout. The protesters, including turbaned men, and some women and children, had been bused in from different parts of the UK and chanted pro-Khalistan slogans.
The organisers used mikes to make anti-India speeches and attack the Punjab Police for alleged human rights violations. The speeches switched between English and Punjabi to make allegations of Indian media bias for calling them fringe elements and backed by Pakistan's spy agency ISI.

Barricades outside the UK mission on Shantipath in Chanakyapuri were removed on 22 March 2023, according to news agency ANI. Barricades were also removed from outside the Delhi residence of British High Commissioner Alex Ellis.
On 19 March, a mob pulled down the tricolour at the Indian mission in London and also broke some windows. The group waved the so-called Khalistani flag.
The attack took place a day after Punjab police began a crackdown on pro-Khalistan preacher Amritpal Singh.
