A succession of power outages at a Los Angeles hospital prompted the evacuation of 28 patients in critical condition to other hospitals early Tuesday, while 213 other patients were moved to another building in the medical centre, authorities said.
The power failure blacked out Adventist Health White Memorial's main six-story building, disabling elevators, said Fire Chief Kristin M. Crowley. More than 100 firefighters and numerous ambulances were dispatched to the facility east of downtown.
The building includes OB-GYN and neonatal intensive care, Crowley said.
&ldquo;All patients are safe,&rdquo; John Raffoul, the hospital president, told a press conference.
The hospital originally lost power at 3 a.m. Monday after Tropical Storm Hilary dumped record rainfall on the city, and backup generators that were supposed to last three days kicked in, Raffoul said.
But a blackout was reported at 11:45 p.m. Monday and firefighters were dispatched to evacuate patients, assisting them down flights of stairs in many cases, the Fire Department said.
&ldquo;We don't know the cause of the double failure that we had here ... other than the fact that we had a major storm that hit us here in Southern California,&rdquo; Raffoul said.
Raffoul said a new generator was on order.&nbsp;

Dramatic video showed a man hanging on to a corrugated concrete shear wall, to keep from being swept into the Los Angeles River on Wednesday, as water from the storms pounding California rushes beneath him.
A KABC/ABC7 Los Angeles helicopter captured the images of a Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) helicopter lowering a firefighter to the river.
The firefighter reached the man and hooked him to a device before the two were lifted together to the helicopter.
A statement from the LAFD says the man was taken to a hospital after suffering the effects of hypothermia. No other injuries were immediately found.
The statement said it was not immediately known how the man wound up in the river.

Los Angeles county sheriff Robert Luna said that no other suspects were at large.
At least 10 people died and 10 were wounded after the gunman opened fire at a ballroom dance studio on 21 January during Lunar New Year celebrations.
The shooting sent a wave of fear through Asian American communities in the Los Angeles area and cast a shadow over Lunar New Year festivities around the country.
Other cities sent extra officers to watch over the celebrations.
Luna said the shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park left five women and five men dead and wounded another 10 people. Then 20 to 30 minutes later, a man with a gun entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in nearby Alhambra.

Captain Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said officers had responded to emergency calls around 10:20pm on Saturday (6:20 Sunday GMT) and found people pouring out of the premises.
"The officers made entry to the location and located additional victims," he said.
"The Monterey Park Fire Department responded to the scene and treated the injured and pronounced 10 of the victims deceased at the scene.
"There are at least 10 additional victims that were transported to numerous local hospitals and are listed in various conditions from stable to critical.
"The suspect fled the scene and remains outstanding."
Police gave no description of the wanted man, and did not say what kind of gun he used.

Officials recommended that people heading from Southern California use Interstates 8 or 40, which are major detours.
Photos posted by Caltrans showed water rushing through a deep gouge in the pavement of the highway. Flooding also affected other roads in the region, including State Routes 177, 78 and 62.
A flash flood in the same area in July 2015 washed out a bridge on the eastbound side of I-10 and eroded the ground under the westbound bridge.
The interstate was closed for nearly a week for repair of the westbound bridge, which then carried traffic on single lanes in each direction. The eastbound side did not reopen until September.
The National Weather Service said more flooding was possible through Thursday throughout a large swath of Southern California's mountains and deserts.
Flash floods earlier this summer badly damaged roads in Death Valley National Park, the Mojave National Preserve and on the the southern side of Joshua Tree National Park.
Officials called the Aug. 5 deluge in Death Valley historic. Hundreds of visitors were initially stranded by flood waters and debris-covered roads. It took about two weeks for the park to reopen its most popular areas.

The leader of a fundamentalist Christian organisation in Mexico has been charged with rape and human trafficking in the United States. Naasón Joaquín García who heads the La Luz Del Mundo church in Mexico was detained at the Los Angeles airport. Known as the 'Apostle' among his followers, García along with three female defendants are facing 26 charges of human trafficking, production of child sex abuse images and rape of a minor. The Church has rejected the allegation and are confident Garcia will be proven innocent.
