Andrey Rublev made little work of American Taylor Fritz when he won 6-4, 6-3 in their semifinal on Saturday to vie for his first Madrid Open title.&nbsp; Rublev will face Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final on Sunday.&nbsp;
Auger-Aliassime advanced after Jiri Lehecka had to retire at 3-3 in the first set of their semifinal, joining a long list of players injured at the event. It was the third walkover for Auger-Aliassime of Madrid Open. He advanced to the third round when Jakub Mensik retired hurt, entered semifinals without playing a ball when Jannik Sinner pulled out and Jiri Lehecka's retirement offered him a straight pass into the final.&nbsp;
Rublev has been in particularly remarkable form as he downed two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in their quarterfinal clash.&nbsp; The Russian&nbsp;is seeking his 16th career title and his second of the season after winning Hong Kong in January. He has a 5-1 record against Auger-Aliassime, including a win in their sole matchup on clay. Auger-Aliassime, on the other hand, is seeking his sixth career title.
The men's side of Madrid Open has been marred by a series of injuries even before the Masters event got underway.&nbsp; Novak Djokovic withdrew before the tournament. Jannik Sinner, Jakub Mensik, Jiri Lehecka and Daniil Medvedev all pulled out citing injuries at various stages in the event while Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz was nursing a sore arm during his last 8 match against Rublev.&nbsp; Alcaraz eventually pulled out of next week's Rome Masters with a forearm injury.&nbsp;

A rematch of the 2023 Madrid Masters 1000 is on the cards in the women's singles with Swiatek-Sabalenka set to clash, while Daniil Medvedev joined a long list of injured men's singles players.

A rematch of the 2023 Madrid Masters 1000 is on the cards in the women's singles with Swiatek-Sabalenka set to clash, while Daniil Medvedev joined a long list of injured men's singles players.&nbsp;

Iga Swiatek cruised to a straight-sets semifinal win over Madison Keys to reach the Madrid Open final and a rematch against No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka.
Top-ranked Swiatek beat No. 20 Keys 6-1, 6-3 and will next face the defending champion Sabalenka, who rallied to overcome No. 4-ranked Elena Rybakina 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5).
The Madrid Open is the only high-profile European clay-court title that Swiatek is yet to win. Sabalenka, who needed three sets to defeat Swiatek in the Madrid final last year, is into her third Madrid final after ending Rybakina's 16-match clay-court winning streak. Meanwhile, in men's singles, Daniil Medvedev retired from his quarterfinal match after losing the first set 6-4, sending the 31st-ranked Jiri Lehecka into a semifinal against 35th-ranked Felix Auger-Aliassime.
No. 4-ranked Medvedev needed treatment on his upper right leg while leading 3-2, complaining about having trouble moving to his right. He also needed treatment at 4-3, and after Lehecka broke serve in the ninth game to win the set, Medvedev decided not to continue.

Men's world no. 3 Carlos Alcaraz was denied a third Madrid Open title when Andrey Rublev ousted him in their quarterfinal clash on Wednesday.&nbsp; The second-seeded Spaniard got off to a good start but then was outplayed by the seventh-seeded Rublev, losing 4-6 6-3 6-2 at the Caja Magica centre court.&nbsp; Rublev, seeking his second ATP 1000 title after winning Monte Carlo last year, will play Taylor Fritz in the semifinals.
Alcaraz, who had already struggled in a three-set win over Jan-Lennard Struff on Tuesday, looked out of sorts and was mistake-prone toward the end.
It was his first tournament after missing Monte Carlo and Barcelona because of a right forearm injury.&nbsp; Top-seed Jannik Sinner, on the other hand, withdrew from his quarterfinal against Felix Auger-Aliassime after his hip continued to trouble him, stating that he did not want to risk aggravating the injury.&nbsp; In women's singles, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka defeated 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva for the second straight year in Madrid to reach the women's semifinals.
The second-seeded Sabalenka didn't face a break point on her way to a 6-1 6-4 win in Wednesday's quarterfinals. She had beaten the teenage sensation in straight sets in the fourth round last year. Sabalenka is due to face 4th seed Elena Rybakina, who saved two match points vs Yulia Putintseva to eventually win 4-6 7-6(4) 7-5 on Wednesday.&nbsp;

In the next round, the Spaniard will face world number 91 Pedro Cachin of Argentina, who defeated Frances Tiafoe.

The 11th-ranked De Minaur beat Nadal 7-5, 6-1 just 11 days before in Barcelona, where the Spaniard returned to the courts for the first time in more than three months. Nadal looked much better this time around.
Nadal&rsquo;s ultimate goal is to be competitive one last time at next month&rsquo;s French Open, where he is a record 14-time champion.
