Hours after Bharatiya Janata Party's Maharashtra unit held a meeting in the state to discuss the Lok Sabha election results, state deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis in a press briefing offered to step down from the position in the government.
Fadnavis said, he takes responsibility for the party's poor show in the state where it party won nine Lok Sabha seats in the state, where its tally dwindled by 14 as compared to the 2019 parliamentary polls.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP had won 23 seats in Maharashtra.
Significantly, Fadnavis' move comes hours after Amol Mitkari --NCP MLA and aide of Ajit Pawar claimed that the party was sidelined during the election campaign in the state.
Mitkari made big claims during a telephonic conversation with News18.
This time, the BJP and allies won 17 seats out of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state, with the BJP's tally dwindling by less than half compared to 2019, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) won 30 of the 48 seats.
The BJP-led NDA fell significantly short of its target of bagging 45-plus seats in Maharashtra, garnering just 17 seats.

According to officials, three women, two men and two children were killed in the blaze.&nbsp;

Police said there were residents on the upper floor of the building, but the flames did not reach them. It is suspected that the victims died after inhaling smoke.
The cause of fire is under investigation, and authorities have ordered a post-mortem examination of the deceased.

Maharashtra landslide: search resumes for 119 missing villagers, toll 16

The rescue operations in Maharashtra village resumed on Friday, with NDRF and other teams engaged in a battle against time.&nbsp;

The rescue and search operation at Irshalwadi hamlet in Maharashtra's Raigad district, where a massive landslide buried several houses and claimed the lives of at least 16 people so far, resumed on Friday morning, an official said.
The landslide occurred around 11 pm on Wednesday at the tribal village, situated on a hill slope, under Khalapur tehsil of the coastal district, around 80 km from Mumbai. Of the total 228 residents of the village, the bodies of 16 have been recovered, while 93 residents have been traced, he said.
However, a total of 119 villagers are yet to be traced. They include those who had gone out of the village to attend a marriage or for rice plantation work, he said.
Of the nearly 50 houses in the village, 17 were flattened by the landslide, officials said.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) along with teams of Raigad police and local authorities began the operation for the second day at the remote village, the official said.
"At least four NDRF teams reached the landslide site this morning and started the operation. Teams of the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF), local disaster management authorities, Raigad police are also engaged in the operation," he said.
The search operation began at 6.30 am, Raigad Superintendent of Police Somanth Gharge said.
"We have roped in a dog squad to assist the personnel in the search operation," an NDRF official said.
On Thursday, the rescue and search teams recovered 16 bodies from the landslide, while 21 people were rescued.
"The deceased included four children between the age group of one to four years and a 70-year-old person," he said, adding seven persons are undergoing treatment at various hospitals.
The search and rescue personnel at the site were facing hurdles due to the difficult hill terrain of the area where heavy equipment cannot be easily moved.
"Incessant rain, fog and gusty winds at the hilltop, those involved in the search and rescue operation are facing difficulties," the official said.
From the hill base, it takes around one-and-a-half hours to reach Irshalwadi, which does not have a pucca road.
As the village does not have a pucca road, earth movers and excavators could not be easily moved and hence the operation is being carried out manually, the official said.
The NDRF personnel had to stop their search and rescue operation at the landslide site on Thursday evening due to bad weather.&nbsp;

Ajit Pawar defects: recalling Sharad Pawar's remarks on nephew's 2019 rebellion

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday said "certain things were done" after the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections to expose the BJP and show how far it can go to gain power.
The veteran politician was responding to reporters' questions about BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis's claim that Pawar had agreed to form government with the BJP but backed out at the last moment.
Reacting to Pawar's latest statement, Fadnavis said he was glad that the NCP chief finally "admitted the truth", and more such disclosures would follow.
It was true that BJP leaders had met the NCP leadership and had discussions on several things, Pawar said here.
"But he (Fadnavis) himself said yesterday that I changed the decision (to go with the BJP) two days earlier (before the swearing-in) ...If I had changed the decision, what was the reason for going ahead and taking the oath of office, and that too so discreetly in the early morning," the NCP chief asked.
"Had they (Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar) had the NCP's support, wouldn't the government have survived? The government fell, and he had to resign," Pawar further said.
"Certain things were done (at that time) to expose before the public how far they (BJP) can go for power....There was a need to bring out that they could not live without power," the NCP chief said cryptically.
His father-in-law (Test player Sadu Shinde) was a googly bowler, and he himself (Pawar) was the chairman of the ICC, he said, adding, "so, without playing cricket, I knew where and when to bowl a googly." Pawar also said that instead of making unnecessary statements, Fadnavis, who is also home minister, should focus on ensuring women's security in the state.
Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis in a recent interview to a news channel claimed that Pawar had agreed to form government with the BJP in 2019. But the NCP supremo backed off after three-four days, he claimed.
After the 2019 Assembly elections in Maharashtra, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (then undivided) snapped ties with the long-term ally BJP over the issue of sharing the chief ministerial post.
Later, Fadnavis was sworn in as chief minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar as his deputy in a hush-hush early morning ceremony at the Raj Bhawan, but the government lasted only 80 hours.
Thackeray subsequently formed alliance with the NCP and Congress to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi government (MVA) which collapsed last June.
Reacting to Pawar's statements, Fadnavis told reporters on Thursday that he was very happy that Pawar had to tell the truth finally.
"I feel my googly has resulted in the truth coming out, but it is only a partial truth. I will bring out the remaining part of the truth,&rdquo; the BJP leader said.
It was Pawar's own nephew Ajit Pawar who "got clean bowled" due to the NCP chief's actions in 2019, he said, adding, "I will slowly bring out the truth from him (Pawar) only.&rdquo;&nbsp;

Massive rescue and relief operations are underway at the site in Valpada in Mankoli, with one team each of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Thane Disaster Response Force having arrived and another NDRF team on the way, District Disaster Control Cell chief Anita Jawanjal told PTI.
Earlier, Thane Municipal Corporation Regional Disaster Management Cell chief Avinash Sawant said four families resided on the upper floors and several labourers worked on the ground floor of the ground-plus-two storey building in Wardhaman Compound that collapsed at around 1.45 pm.
He said fire brigade personnel from Bhiwandi, Thane and other surrounding areas have been deployed for search and rescue operations.

Maharashtra govt announces 50% concession for women in state-run buses

Women passengers will get 50 per cent concession on tickets on all types of buses run by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) from March 17, the state-owned transporter has announced.
The benefit will be extended under the &lsquo;Mahila Samman Yojana&rsquo; and the state government will reimburse the concession amount to the corporation, said a press release by MSRTC on Friday morning.
While presenting the state&rsquo;s budget for 2023-24 on March 9, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the finance portfolio, had announced 50 per cent concession to all women passengers on the buses of the public transport body.
MSRTC has a fleet of over 15,000 buses and ferries over 50 lakh passengers every day. It now offers 33 per cent to 100 per cent concessions on tickets to various social groups, said the release.
MSRTC officials said it would be difficult to determine how many women will be benefited from the scheme as they were not issuing gender-linked tickets earlier. MSRTC expects the population of women passengers to be in the range of 35-40 per cent of its total bus users, they said.
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of India&rsquo;s independence, the Maharashtra government had announced 100 per cent concession to senior citizens over 75 years and a 50 per cent concession to travellers aged between 65 and 74 years on all types of MSRTC buses.

Earlier the police informed the court that Jaisinghani blackmailed and demanded Rs 10 crore from Amruta Fadnavis following which an extortion-related charge had been added to the case.
Anishka was arrested on Thursday, while her father, also an accused in the case, was still at large. The Malabar Hill police station had registered a First Information Report (FIR) on February 20 on Amruta Fadnavis&rsquo;s complaint.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off two Vande Bharat trains from Mumbai to Shirdi and Solapur.
At an event at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in south Mumbai, Modi first flagged off the CSMT-Solapur Vande Bharat Express and later another semi-high-speed train linking the financial capital to Sainagar Shirdi temple town in Ahmednagar district.
The Mumbai-Solapur Vande Bharat Express will cover the 455 km distance between Mumbai and the textile city in 6 hours and 30 minutes, a saving of nearly one hour in current timings.
The Mumbai-Sainagar Shirdi Vande Bharat Express will take 5 hours and 25 minutes to cover the 343 km distance to the temple town.
The one-way fare without catering service on the CSMT-Solapur Vande Bharat train will be Rs 1,000 for chair car and Rs 2,015 for executive chair car, while the fares for the two classes with catering will be Rs 1,300 and Rs 2,365 respectively, a CR official said.
The one-way journey ticket without catering service for CSMT to Sainagar Shirdi will be Rs 840 and Rs 1670 for chair car and executive chair car respectively, while the ticket prices with catering service will be Rs 975 and Rs 1840 respectively.

Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar on Monday said a five-year-old girl from Raichur district has become the first confirmed Zika virus case in the state.
The Minister also made it clear that there is no need for any worry or concern, as the government is taking all the necessary measures, and will also be issuing a set of guidelines.
"We have got a lab report from Pune about the confirmed case of Zika virus. On December 5, it was processed and reported on December 8. Three specimens were sent out of which two were negative and one was positive, which is a five-year-old-girl. We are keeping a vigil," Sudhakar said in response to a question on the Zika virus case in Raichur.
Speaking to reporters here, he pointed out that a few months ago Zika virus cases were found in Kerala, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
"This is the first confirmed case in Karnataka. It came to light when the serum was subjected to Dengue and Chikungunya test. Usually 10 per cent of such samples are sent to Pune for test, out of which this has come across as positive," the Minister said.
Stating that the government is maintaining caution and necessary instructions have been given to surveillance (Health department) officials in Raichur and neighbouring districts, to send the samples for Zika virus test in case any suspected infection cases are found in any hospitals, he said, adding that this girl did not have any travel history.

He also hit out at Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, saying the state government appeared weak and helpless to counter such attacks.

Hitting back, Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Chandrashekhar Bawankule asked the Rajya Sabha member to refrain from making "baseless and provocative comments".
The decades-old raging dispute between the two states spilled onto roads on Tuesday with stones being hurled at vehicles entering Karnataka from the Maharashtra side near a toll booth at Hirebaugwadi in Belagavi district. Similarly, at least four buses from Karnataka were defaced in Pune district allegedly by activists of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.
Raut in a tweet on Wednesday targeted the Central government by claiming that Marathi people and vehicles from Maharashtra cannot be attacked in Belagavi without "Delhi's support".
"Workers of the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti have been arrested. The game of ending Marathi self-esteem by breaking its backbone has started. The attacks in Belagavi are part of the same conspiracy. Get up Marathas get up!" Raut said.
Later, talking to reporters, Raut said Belagavi and surrounding Marathi-speaking areas along the Karnataka-Maharashtra border be declared as a Union Territory.
"If Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has guts, he should demand the disputed areas be declared as a union territory immediately," he said.
Raut said people are ready to go to Belagavi under the leadership of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar.
&ldquo;We don't know what is happening? There is a BJP government at the Centre, there is a BJP government in Karnataka and also in Maharashtra," Raut said.
A day earlier, Pawar had said he and his associates, an apparent reference to the constituents of Maha Vikas Aghadi, will visit Belagavi to give confidence to activists of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES).
"(Chief Minister Eknath) Shinde says he has created a revolution. What kind of a revolution it is can be seen in the manner how the state is looking weak to counter these attacks," Raut said.
Those who quit the Shiv Sena saying they have self-respect have now decided to stay silent, he added.
Raut claimed attempts are being made to weaken Maharashtra economically by taking its projects to Gujarat and staking a claim on its areas.
"Where are the chief minister and the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra? Are their mouths locked? Their (Eknath Shinde group's) symbol -'sword and shield' - should be changed to a lock.
"Attempts are made to make the state unstable. No chief minister of Karnataka earlier stakes claims to (villages in) Solapur and Sangli," he alleged.
Taking a dig at Maharashtra ministers Shambhuraj Desai and Chandrakant Patil for "backing out" from visiting Belagavi on Tuesday, Raut said, "We will give them protection and march with them&rdquo;.
The scheduled visit of a Maharashtra ministerial delegation to Belagavi did not materialise amid the simmering tension over the boundary row.
Maharashtra BJP chief Bawankule slammed Raut over his remarks and asked him to refrain from making baseless and provocative comments.
"How can a government be responsible for the violence which is carried out by anti-social elements?" he asked.
Bawankule said vandalism of buses from Karnataka has also been reported in Maharashtra.
"Do we say the government is responsible?" the BJP leader asked.
Amid the rising tension between the two states, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and his Maharashtra counterpart Shinde spoke to each other over the phone on Tuesday night and agreed there should be peace and law and order should be maintained on both sides.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also spoke to Bommai over stone pelting on vehicles from Maharashtra entering the southern state and said he will also take up the matter with the Centre.
The border issue dates back to 1957 after the reorganisation of states on linguistic lines. Maharashtra had laid claim to Belagavi, which was part of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency as it has a sizable Marathi-speaking population.
Bommai recently sought a merger of "Kannada-speaking" areas in Maharashtra's Akkalkot and Solapur and had also said some villages in Jat taluka in Sangli district wanted to join the southern state.&nbsp;

The incident occurred at Balharshah railway station, located around 150 km from here, at 5.10 pm, he said.
"A large number of passengers were using the FoB to board a Pune-bound train, when a part of it suddenly caved in. As a result, some people fell on the railway track below from a height of around 20 feet," the official of the Government Railway Police (GRP) said.
Thirteen injured persons were rushed to a hospital. One of them has suffered head injuries and his condition is critical, he said.

A 40-year-old man allegedly tricked his teenage daughter into writing suicide notes to implicate his relatives and then asked her to enact suicide during which he actually killed her, police said.
The 16-year-old girl was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her house in Kalamna area of Nagpur city on November 6, a police official on Saturday said.
The man, who worked as a labourer, was later arrested and an investigation was on to ascertain the motive behind the murder, he said.
Police initially registered a case of abetment to suicide against the girl's stepmother, uncle, aunt and grandparents on the basis of five suicide notes found in the room, the official of Kalamna police station said.
But an examination of the mobile phone of the victim's father during the probe revealed there was a fiendish plot behind what looked like a suicide.
"In the mobile phone, we found a photograph of the victim enacting a suicide bid. It came to light that he had asked his daughter to act as if she was hanging herself and clicked a photograph, claiming he wanted to teach his relatives a lesson," the police official said.

"Before that the man had asked the girl to write five suicide notes naming these relatives. When the girl did so and tied the noose around her neck and stood on a stool as instructed by him, he clicked a photo and then allegedly kicked the stool, causing her death by hanging. She died in front of her father and 12-year-old sister," the official said.
The accused then left the house. He later called police, claiming he had stepped out for some work and upon return found his daughter had hanged herself, said the official.
The police initially registered a case of suicide abetment under the Indian Penal Code against the five relatives. But the investigators later realised something was amiss.
"After we came across the suicide enactment photo in his phone, we questioned the man and he told the police that he murdered his daughter. His first wife ended her life in 2016 and the second wife had also left home," the official said.
The man was arrested for the alleged murder. The police were conducting a probe into the motive behind the crime, the official added.&nbsp;

The city police have registered criminal cases against seven leaders of the 'Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray party for allegedly making offensive statements against Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at a rally in Thane, an official said on Tuesday.
The cases were registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Vinayak Raut, Bhaskar Jadhav and Sushma Andhare among others.
The official said these leaders allegedly used offensive language against the chief minister.
A complaint was lodged by Dattaram Gavas, a supporter of CM Shinde.

The Shinde camp is expected to write to the Speaker asking for the appointment of Rahul Shewale as the party&rsquo;s group leader, replacing Thackeray loyalist Vinayak Raut, and Gawali as the chief whip.

This request by the 12 Sena MPs is in contrast to the line taken by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, which has reportedly written another letter to Birla seeking the removal of Gawali from the post of the chief whip and replacing him with Rachna Vichare. In this letter written by Vinayak Raut, who is a Shiv Sena leader in the lower house, pitches Vichare as the party&rsquo;s chief whip.
The move comes almost a month after a revolt in the Shiv Sena which led to a split in the party bringing down the Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra.
Over two-third of MLAs had joined rebel leader Shinde, who went on to become the CM in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Meanwhile, Shinde is in Delhi to review the legal strategy on the disqualification petition filed by the Uddhav Thackeray camp against 16 MLAs supporting him.

The incident occurred in Nanda Gomukh village under the Kelwad police station limits, some 40 km from the Nagpur district headquarters, in the afternoon, an official said.
"The SUV with eight passengers was crossing a bridge that did not have railings on either side. The water flowing above the bridge swept away the vehicle. While two passengers swam to safety, we have recovered bodies of three persons and three others are missing," the official said.
Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state government will give Rs 4 lakh to the kin of the each deceased person.
Fadnavis tweeted about the incident from his official handle @Dev_Fadnavis.
"I am extremely sad to learn about a vehicle falling off a bridge and its occupants being swept away in flood water. I was also informed that some of them have died," he tweeted.
He said a search operation is on to trace the missing persons with the help of the National Disaster Response Force.
The deceased have been identified as Roshni Chaukidar (32), Darsh Chaukidar (10) and SUV driver Liladhar Hiware (38), all residents of Zingabai Takali, officials said.
The missing persons are Madhukar Patil (65), his wife Nirmala (60) and Neemu Aatner (45), all hailing from Betul in neighbouring Madhya Pardesh.
"The vehicle was going from Multai in Madhya Pradesh to Chhatrapur village in Nanda here. A team comprising police and fire brigade personnel is carrying out a search operation," the Kelwad police station official said.
