The Navy and Coast Guard have launched a massive rescue operation, with 11 Navy boats and three boats of Marine Police and a boat of Coast Guard being deployed in the area.

Two passengers died and 75 others on board a ferry were rescued after a speed boat crashed into it off Mumbai coast on Wednesday, officials said.
The Neelkamal ferry, with 80 persons and five crew members on board, was on way to Elephanta Islands, a popular tourist destination near Mumbai, when the speed boat circled it before crashing into it, a viral video of the accident shows.
A local leader claimed that the speed boat belonged to the Navy, but there was no confirmation from the Navy on this.
The Navy and Coast Guard launched a massive rescue operation, with 11 Navy boats and three boats of Marine Police and a boat of Coast Guard being deployed in the area, a defence official said.
Four helicopters were involved in the search and rescue operation, the official said.
Personnel from police, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and fishermen in the area are also involved in the rescue work, the official said.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the state assembly in Nagpur that search is underway for seven to eight passengers who are yet to be traced.
The speed boat, which is said to belong to either the Navy or Coast Guard, apparently lost control and rammed into the ferry, Fadnavis said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expanded his cabinet, more than three weeks after the assembly election results were declared. A total of 39 ministers were sworn in during a grand ceremony at Nagpur, Mr. Fadnavis&rsquo;s constituency. With this, the cabinet is nearly at full capacity, with 42 out of 43 possible berths occupied.
The new ministers include 19 from the BJP, 11 from the Shiv Sena, and 9 from the NCP. Notable BJP leaders who took the oath include state unit chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Ashish Shelar, Ganesh Naik, Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Pankaja Munde, Girish Mahajan, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Chandrakant Patil, and Nitesh Rane. From the Shiv Sena&rsquo;s Eknath Shinde faction, leaders such as Shambhuraj Desai, Dadaji Dagadu Bhuse, Sanjay Rathod, Uday Samant, Gulabrao Patil, and Sanjay Shirsat were inducted. The NCP&rsquo;s representation includes Aditi Tatkare, Dhananjay Munde, and Hasan Mushrif.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, along with Mr. Fadnavis, at the Raj Bhavan in Nagpur.
The expansion followed the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance&rsquo;s landslide victory in the recent assembly elections, where the coalition won 235 seats. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 132 seats, while the Shiv Sena secured 57 and the NCP won 41 seats.
This development comes after a delay attributed to disagreements over portfolio allocation. The tussle primarily revolved around key portfolios like the home ministry. Despite being Deputy Chief Minister in the previous term, Eknath Shinde&rsquo;s faction aimed to secure significant portfolios, including home, which the BJP was unwilling to relinquish. Ever since Mr. Fadnavis&rsquo;s first term as Chief Minister, he has held the home portfolio, even during Mr. Shinde&rsquo;s tenure as Chief Minister.
Mr. Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar had taken their oaths earlier on December 5 in Mumbai, in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP leaders, and allies. The cabinet expansion solidifies the BJP&rsquo;s leadership within the coalition, balancing representation from its alliance partners.

The visuals show passengers panicking as the electric vehicle (EV) ran amok, hitting vehicles and pedestrians on Monday night on a busy street in Kurla (west).&nbsp;
Some passengers tried to tightly hold on to the poles and grab handles, while others rose from their seats to fathom what was happening on the streets as the bus moved forward.
After the bus swerved to a halt, several passengers jumped out of the shattered windows.

Besides killing seven persons and injuring 42 others, including four policemen on 'bandobast' duty, the accident also wrecked 22 vehicles.
The bus driver has been arrested for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and remanded in police custody till December 21.

Top officials of BEST and the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) held meetings on Wednesday with private operators who supply buses to government agencies under the wet lease model and affirmed to focus on driver training and taking extra safety steps.
BEST will also make breath analyser test mandatory for drivers in the wake of the Kurla crash.
At the meetings, the private operators were asked to provide details of training given to drivers, their appointment criteria, training infrastructure and modules, officials said.
Another meeting was held between senior BEST officials and the Maharashtra transport commissioner, who directed BEST to conduct an internal investigation and submit a report, which will be sent to the state government, an official said.
Under the wet lease model, the responsibility of providing drivers and carrying out maintenance of hired buses remains with private contractors. The state-run transport bodies, on their part, pay them a specific amount for the buses.&nbsp;

The village comes under the Karad (South) assembly constituency, earlier represented by senior Congress leader and former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan. He lost the electoral contest in November against BJP candidate Atul Bhosale by 39,355 votes.
The resolution was passed after residents of Kolewadi expressed doubts over the votes cast through Electronic Voting Machines.
This resolution was passed days after a section of villagers from Markadwadi in Solapur's Malshiras constituency tried to conduct mock "re-polling" using ballot papers expressing doubt on the credibility of EVMs. Their bid was thwarted by the administration and police, leading to the registration of cases.
"The resolution was passed on December 2 in the gram sabha meeting respecting the sentiments of villagers who demanded that upcoming elections be held on ballot papers and not on EVMs," Shankarrao Patil, husband of the village sarpanch Ratnamala Patil, said on Tuesday.
Patil said villagers were surprised as Prithviraj Chavan failed to get a desired lead of votes in Kolewadi during assembly elections.
A Gram Sevak also confirmed the passing of the resolution.
"The Kolewadi gram sabha passed a resolution stating that future elections should be conducted through ballot papers without EVMs," a villager said.
He said the Election Commission should revert to the ballot paper mechanism in view of a "collective demand".
"We have resolved that the people of Kolewadi will vote only if the process is conducted using ballot papers. We won't vote if EVMs are used in future elections," he said.
If the administration doesn't allow us to vote on ballot papers, we will boycott the polling process, he added.
Satara district collector Jitendra Dudi said his office had not received a copy of the purported resolution from the gram panchayat.
"Since we have not received the copy, it would not be appropriate for me to comment. Once we receive the copy, we will take the required measures," he said.

Many of the injured are still receiving treatment.

Accidentally pressing the accelerator instead of the brake, the woman fell down 300 feet into a gorge in Maharashtra. She reportedly died after falling off the cliff.
The incident happened in Maharashtra&rsquo;s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Monday afternoon, according to the police. The woman, identified as Shweta Deepak Survase, was on a vacation with her friend.
Survase's friend Suraj Sanjau Mule can be heard shouting "clutch, clutch, clutch" as the car accelerates towards the cliff.
Law enforcement officials at the scene reached the site and rushed Survase to the hospital, where she was declared dead. The vehicle was found in a wrecked condition down the 300-feet gorge.&nbsp;

A 17-year-old girl from Maharashtra's Palghar district was allegedly raped by two persons on different occasions under the pretext of marriage following which she became pregnant and had two children, police said on Tuesday.
Based on the girl's complaint, the police on Sunday registered a case against 16 persons, including the two alleged rapists, the victim's parents and two doctors, on various charges, they said.
Some persons have also been detained, the police said without giving more details.
According to the complaint filed by the girl, who is a resident of Nallasopara area, two persons lured her since 2021 on the promise of marriage and allegedly raped her repeatedly on separate occasions, an official from Achole police station said.
The girl became pregnant and had two children, he said, adding that both the persons later abandoned the victim and the children.
One of the alleged rapists took the victim to Amravati when she was pregnant, concealed her identity and got her delivery done at a hospital there before abandoning her and the child, the official said.
Eight of the accused, including the girl's parents and uncle, took Rs 4 lakh from one of the alleged rapists through an acquaintance and handed over the victim's girl child to a person for sale, he said.
The accused in the case also include two women doctors of hospitals where the victim delivered the children and an advocate, whose role is not specified in the FIR.
The case has been registered against the 16 accused under Indian Penal Code sections 376 (rape), 376(2)(n) (aggravated sexual assault), 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under 12 years by parent or person having care of it), 363 (kidnapping), 372 (selling minor for purposes of prostitution) and 34 (common intention).
They have also been booked under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Juvenile Justice Act, the police said, adding that a probe was on into the case.&nbsp;

He said nine of the 12 people have been discharged from the hospital while three others are recuperating.
The incident occurred at Satellite Tower in Santosh Nagar area of Goregaon (East) on Friday after eating chicken shawarma, he said.
"Twelve people complained of food poisoning on Friday and Saturday. They were admitted to a hospital. While nine people were discharged, three others are undergoing treatment," the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official said without elaborating on whether the food was consumed by the 12 people at a hotel or shop.

She has also moved a writ petition before Bombay High Court for quashing of an FIR registered against Soni and others in Uttar Pradesh after she made it public that Kishan was her biological father.
The case was registered in UP capital Lucknow under IPC sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 195 (giving or fabricating false evidence ) 386 (extortion), 504 (intentional insult) on the complaint of Kishan's wife Priti Shukla three days ago.
Shinova's writ petition filed through advocates Ashok Sarogi and Jay Yadav stated that the FIR has been registered in Lucknow despite nothing happening there and despite the petitioner as well as Shukla and Kishan being residents of Mumbai.
Her civil suit in Dindoshi court in Malad said Soni came across various people belonging to the film fraternity, including Ravi Kishan, in her capacity as a journalist.
As per the plea, Soni and Kishan entered into a relationship and got married in 1991 though they could not reside together for long due to some personal problems.
She was born on October 19, 1998, but by then it came to light that Kishan was already married, the plea claimed.
In view of these facts, it seems Kishan and Soni decided among themselves that their child would call the actor "uncle", the plea said.
At all relevant points of time, the duo took necessary care of her, the woman said in her plea.
However, recently when Shinova and Soni visited the BJP leader to offer best wishes for the upcoming Lok Sabha poll, he misbehaved and refused to meet them, the plea alleged.
Following this they held a press conference to tell the public about the rights of Shinova in her capacity as the biological daughter of Kishan, the plea said.
Nothing incriminating was mentioned in the press conference, despite which Kishan's wife Shukla filed an FIR against them, Shinova said in the plea.
The suit in Dindoshi court will be heard on April 25, while the writ petition is likely to come up before Bombay HC next week.&nbsp;

Akhil Bhartiya Manavata Paksha candidate Vanita Raut, from Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, promised subsidised liquor if she won in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Raut said she would not only open beer bars in every village but also provide free imported whiskey and beer to the poor.&nbsp;
"Jahan gaanv, waha beer baar. Yahi mere mudde hain (Where there is a village, there is a beer bar. These are my poll issues)," Raut said, according to an India Today report. &nbsp;
She further added, "Extremely poor people toil hard and only find solace in drinking liquor. But they cannot afford quality whiskey or beer. They get to drink only country liquor and there is no limit to the quantity they consume, so they pass out. Hence, I want them to experience imported liquor and enjoy it. I want them to enjoy and enjoy only".&nbsp;
Raut said that the drinker as well as the vendor would need to have a licence, and only adults should be given the licence to drink alcohol.&nbsp;

Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar on Wednesday announced candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Maharashtra, signalling that the outfit will not ally with the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
Addressing a press conference here, Ambedkar accused the MVA allies - Congress, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar), Shiv Sena (UBT) - of trying to use his outfit to promote dynastic politics.
Ambedkar, the grandson of Dr B R Ambedkar, announced the names of eight candidates for the phase of elections, including himself from the Akola constituency.
"They (the MVA parties were trying to use VBA for promoting dynastic politics which we have tried to resist," Ambedkar said.
The VBA fielded Sanjay Kevat from Bhandara Gondia, Hitesh Madavi from Gadchiroli, Rajesh Bele, Vasant Magar from Buldhana, Prakajkta Pillewar, Rajendra Salunkhe from Wardha, Khemsingh Pawar from Yavatmal-Washim.
The Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) have announced candidates for most of these seats.
He alleged that the MVA allies were refusing to consider the factor of Maratha activist Manoj Jarange.
Jarange has announced support to VBA candidates in the first phase, he said.
Ambedkar also said the party's state committee had discussions that candidates will be fielded from OBC, Muslim, Jain communities and poor sections of the society.

Two men have been arrested for allegedly cheating a laundryman of Rs 15 lakh with one of them pretending to be a personal assistant to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, police said on Sunday. The accused duo is identified as Suhas Mahadik and Kiran Patil, the fake PA.
Police said the complainant Mallesh Kalluri (46) came to know that his place of work would go for redevelopment under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme.
"Meanwhile, Kalluri was told that the president of a Dhobi Ghat residents society has submitted an application in the registrar's office seeking to disqualify Kalluri from the list of eligible persons," a police official said quoting the FIR.
Kalluri then approached Suhas Mahadik, a local known to him, and sought his help.
Mahadik told Kalluri that he knows a person at Sagar bungalow- the official residence of Fadnavis- who is PA to the Deputy CM.
"As told by Mahadik, Kalluri sent his documents on his WhatsApp number. Mahadik assured Kalluri that his work would be done but he will have to pay Rs 35 lakh," the official said.
Mahadik called Kalluri near Vidhan Bhavan last week and introduced him to Patil who was wearing an ID card with a blue ribbon around his neck which had Maharashtra State written on it.
Mahadik spoke to Patil, who demanded Rs 35 lakh for doing his work, as per the FIR.
"The next day, Kalluri told Mahadik that the people of his society could pay only Rs 10 to 12 lakh. Mahadik told him that he would get back after speaking to Patil. Later, he asked Kalluri to come near Vidhan Bhavan," the official said.
The complainant, accompanied by some members of his society, handed over Rs 15 lakh to Mahadik near the Air India building in south Mumbai. Patil also reached the spot, collected money from Mahadik and left, the official added.
"Patil told Kalluri that he would prepare the necessary document within two hours. However, when he didn't return, Mahadik called up Patil who told him that the work had started. After waiting for a long time, Patil didn't come and switched off his mobile phone," as per the FIR.
The next day, Mahadik and Kalluri went to Sagar bungalow where they asked about Kiran Patil but they were told that no person with that name worked there.
"Realising that he was cheated, Kalluri lodged an FIR at Marine Drive police station," the official said, adding that police tracked down Patil to Titwala in Thane district.
During the interrogation, Patil disclosed Mahadik's role in cheating, following which they were arrested on March 22 under sections 170 (Personating a public servant), 419 (cheating by personation) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, the official said.
Further investigation is underway, he added.

BJP leader Praveen Darekar on Tuesday took a dim view in the Maharashtra legislative council of Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange's aggressive comments against Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and sought to blame senior politician Sharad Pawar for it.
Members of the opposition parties objected to this, leading to din in the House and its adjournment for five minutes.
Speaking in Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district on Sunday, Jarange alleged Fadnavis was trying to kill him. The activist also said he would march to Mumbai and protest outside the residence of the deputy CM.
Jarange had also claimed that a poisoning attempt was made against him through saline, though he did not elaborate on it.
BJP legislator Darekar raised the issue in the Upper House of the state legislature on Tuesday.
He claimed NCP-Sharadchandra Pawar leaders, including Sharad Pawar, Jalna MLA Rajesh Tope and Rohit Pawar, had held a meeting with Jarange and ensured the activist creates unrest in the state.
Darekara's allegations irked the opposition side, including Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve and NCP-Sharadchandra Pawar MLC Shashikant Shinde, who objected to his comments.
Members from the ruling and opposition sides got into an argument over the matter.
Despite several appeals by council's deputy chairperson Neelam Gorhe, both the sides refused to back down.
Gorhe then adjourned the House for five minutes.

Joshi (86) was admitted to Hinduja Hospital in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on February 21 and passed away early Friday, the private medical facility said.
Joshi Sir, as he was popularly known, was the first chief minister from the undivided Shiv Sena and held the post during 1995-1999.
He was admitted to the hospital in May last year after suffering a brain haemorrhage.
He was also elected as a member of Parliament and was the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2002 to 2004 when the Vajpayee government was in power.
Born on December 2, 1937 in coastal Konkan region of Maharashtra, Joshi obtained his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the prestigious Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) in Mumbai.
His political career began with his involvement in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and he later became a member of the Shiv Sena. In the 1980s, Joshi emerged as a key leader within the Shiv Sena, and was known for his organisational skills.
He was a municipal councilor in Mumbai during 1968-70 and Chairman, Standing Committee of the Mumbai municipal corporation in 1970. He was the Mayor of Mumbai during 1976-1977.
He was then elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 1972. After serving three terms in the Legislative Council, Joshi was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1990 and was the Leader of the Opposition in the assembly during 1990-91.
In the 1999 general elections, Joshi won from the Mumbai North-Central Lok Sabha Constituency as a Shiv Sena candidate, and was later Union minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.
The former Union minister was married to Anagha Joshi, who died in 2020 at the age of 75. He is survived by a son and two daughters.
