An iconic garland worn by Mahatma Gandhi during the 1930 Dandi March was recently unsold in a UK auction. Despite its historical value, it didn’t meet its guide price. This artifact symbolizes the fight against British colonial rule in India.

The garland is composed of a large teardrop-shaped medallion of pink cloth backed on card, applied with silver and gold thread and sequins in an elaborate decorative pattern.

A tinselled garland presented to and worn by Mahatma Gandhi during the iconic Dandi March of the Indian freedom struggle in 1930 remains open for bids after it failed to meet its GBP 20-30,000 guide price estimate at a UK auction this week.
The garland, in folded paper wrappers inscribed in Gujarati, is said to have been presented as the Salt March passed near the Ahmedabad home of Gandhi&rsquo;s personal physician Dr Balvantrai N Kanuga and was offered by his wife, Nanduben Kanuga. It came up for auction as part of an &lsquo;Islamic and Indian Art&rsquo; sale by Lyon &amp; Turnbull in London on Wednesday.
&ldquo;I am very surprised that the &lsquo;Gandhi Garland&rsquo; did not find a home on the day of the auction,&rdquo; said Kristina Sanne, Head of Sale at the auction house specialising in fine arts and antiques.
&ldquo;That said, we have had quite a lot of interest since the sale and hope to sell it to the highest bidder. It deserves a great home,&rdquo; she said.
The garland is composed of a large teardrop-shaped medallion of pink cloth backed on card, applied with silver and gold thread and sequins in an elaborate decorative pattern. It is edged with gold tinsel, with four smaller rectangular medallions and two triangular medallions similarly decorated and all connected with gold threads to form a necklace.
It passed on through descent from the collection of the late Dr Balvantrai N Kanuga, who along with his wife spent extensive periods at Mahatma Gandhi&rsquo;s Sabarmati Ashram as fellow satyagrahis. An amateur photograph of Gandhi being presented with the garland is inscribed on the reserve to read: &ldquo;Gandhiji Nanduben Kanuga. On the day of Dandi March. At Bungalow 12th March 1930&rdquo;.
The literature with the auction lot states: &ldquo;This garland was presented to Gandhi to mark an auspicious beginning to the Salt March, a major non-violent protest in India in March-April 1930. The Salt March was one of the most successful campaigns in Gandhi&rsquo;s struggle against British rule in India to win equal rights and freedom for Indians.
&ldquo;Starting at his ashram (religious retreat) at Sabarmati (near Ahmedabad), the march reached Dandi after a journey of some 240 miles. On the morning of April 6, Gandhi and his followers picked up handfuls of salt from along the seashore. In so doing, they technically &lsquo;produced&rsquo; salt and broke the law.&rdquo;
A photograph accompanying the garland shows Nanduben Kanuga placing the garland around Gandhi&rsquo;s neck and it is said to have been subsequently returned to the Kanugas after the march.
&ldquo;A few weeks later, Dr Kanuga further contributed to the cause by paying 1600 Rupees for the grains of salt that Gandhi had made at Dandi,&rdquo; reads the footnote.
While the garland remained unsold, the auction attracted fierce bidding for its other highlight lots with a very fine illustration from a Bhagavata Purana series from Punjab going under the hammer for GBP 27,700 - overshooting its estimate of GBP 15-20,000. A group of six Rajput Equestrian Portraits from Rajasthan exceeded their estimate to fetch GBP 20,160 and an album of Kalighat Paintings sold for GBP 21,420.
&ldquo;The Indian Art section saw frantic bidding throughout and was over 90 per cent sold. A real testament to the buoyancy of the Indian Art market,&rdquo; said Sanne.

Hatred, animosity and violence are not part of any religious teachings and those who promote them in the name of religion are misinterpreting their faiths for mischievous reasons and should be shunned, Ela Gandhi, South African peace activist and Mahatma Gandhi's granddaughter, has said.
Her remarks came as she responded to social media posts which claimed that the Gandhi Development and Phoenix Settlement Trust deliberately left out Hindu prayers at an interfaith meeting hosted at the Phoenix Settlement, which her grandfather started during his tenure in Durban.
&ldquo;All our faiths and our scriptures are there to guide us to be good, compassionate and loving people. Hatred, animosity and violence are not part of our essential religious teachings. Those who promote the acts in the name of religion are misinterpreting their faiths for mischievous reasons and should be shunned,&rdquo; Ela said.
Ela, who is the chairperson of the Gandhi Development and Phoenix Settlement Trust, said such moves were &ldquo;an attempt to create division between the Hindu and Muslim communities and alienate Gandhiji and me from the Hindu community&rdquo;.
It is important to state the facts publicly so that the mischief that is being attempted can be stemmed right now, Ela said in an open letter in the weekly Post.
&ldquo;To clarify, I personally invited many Hindus individually and a number of Hindu faith leaders collectively, to recite a Hindu prayer at this function,&rdquo; said Ela, citing invitations to four Hindu organisations which she said could not attend because of other commitments.
&ldquo;The absence of some or other faith has happened at our interfaith prayer services in the past, never deliberately, but because of circumstances that have prevented a particular faith community from attending the particular function.
&ldquo;Importantly, to this day, in the 120 years of the existence of Phoenix Settlement, no one has ever accused us of deliberately leaving out a sect or engaging in &ldquo;mass indoctrination&rdquo;, as is alleged by the posting, she said.

"Mahatma Gandhi freed us from the slavery of the British with the help of truth and non-violence. PM Modi took us forward on the path of progress, which we always wanted to see. Both Mahatma Gandhi and PM Modi reflected the teachings of Shrimad Rajchandra ji," said Dhankhar on the birth anniversary celebrations of Jain mystic and philosopher, Shrimad Rajchandra.
Reacting to the Vice President's remarks, Congress MP and Lok Sabha whip Manickam Tagore took to the social media platform 'X', and said that, "he has crossed all limits of sycophancy."
"If you compare (Modi) with Mahatma, it's shameful, Sir. We all know there is a limit to sycophancy; now you have crossed that limit, and to be in your chair and position and to be a sycophant does not add value, Sir. With respect," the Congress MP wrote while tagging a clip of VP Dhankhar's speech.

PM Modi unveils Mahatma Gandhi's bust in Hiroshima | G7 summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Hiroshima. 

The bust site is close to the iconic A-Bomb Dome that is visited by thousands of people - locals and tourists alike - every day.

The Gandhian ideals of peace and harmony reverberate globally and give strength to millions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday as he unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Hiroshima.&nbsp;
The location of the bust of Gandhi has been chosen as a mark of solidarity for peace and non-violence. The US conducted the world's first nuclear attack on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, destroying the city and killing some 140,000 people.
Modi also spoke to reporters after unveiling the bust and said that even today the world gets frightened even today when it hears the word 'Hiroshima'.
Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, representing a Hiroshima constituency in the House of Representatives, invited Modi to the G-7 Summit as a guest.
The bust was gifted by India to Hiroshima as a symbol of friendship and goodwill between India and Japan on the occasion of Prime Minister Modi's visit to the city for the G7 summit.
"Unveiled Mahatma Gandhi&rsquo;s bust in Hiroshima. This bust in Hiroshima gives a very important message. The Gandhian ideals of peace and harmony reverberate globally and give strength to millions," the prime minister tweeted.
External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the bust was a befitting tribute to a city that symbolises humanity's yearning for peace.
The 42-inch tall bronze bust has been sculpted by Padma Bhushan awardee Ram Vanji Sutar. The bust site, adjacent to the Motoyasu River, is close to the iconic A-Bomb Dome that is visited by thousands of people - locals and tourists alike - every day.
Gandhi dedicated his life to peace and non-violence. The location truly resonates with the principles and life of Gandhiji, which continue to inspire the world and its leaders, the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.
After unveiling the bust, Modi paid floral tributes to Gandhi.
He thanked the mayor of the city and the Japanese government for the opportunity to unveil the Gandhi bust and said it will take forward the idea of non-violence.
"It is a great moment for me to know that the Bodhi tree that I gifted to the Japanese prime minister has been planted here in Hiroshima so that people can understand the importance of peace when they come here. I pay my respect to Mahatma Gandhi," Modi said.
Modi also held bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart Kishida, focusing on ways to synergise efforts under G7 and G20 presidencies to deal with various global challenges.
Modi arrived in Hiroshima on Friday on the first leg of his three-nation trip to Japan, Papua New Guinea and Australia and is expected to take part in over 40 engagements.
Modi is visiting Hiroshima from May 19 to 21 primarily for the annual summit of the G7 advanced economies in which he is expected to speak on challenges facing the globe, including food, fertiliser and energy security.
He will hold bilateral meetings with some of the world leaders attending the Hiroshima G7 Summit.
The G7 bloc comprises Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada and Italy, as well as the European Union.

The word "dog" was spray painted both in front of the temple and down the block, it said.
The same Gandhi statue was vandalised two weeks ago, investigating officials said.
"When the Gandhi statue was vandalised, that really flew in the face of all of our beliefs and it's very disturbing for the community," Assembly member Jenifer Rajkumar said in the report.
The New York Police Department is investigating both incidents as possible hate crimes, media reports said.
Maharaj says many in the community are now afraid to go to the temple.
"I cannot show the congregation that I am worried because if I show them that I'm worrying and I'm not strong, how will they be strong?" the report quoted him as saying. The temple authorities cannot afford to replace the Gandhi statue, because it was handcrafted and cost about USD 4,000, the report said.
"I want to know why they did it," Maharaj said. This is not the first time that a statue of Gandhi was desecrated in the US.
In February this year, an 8-foot-high Gandhi statue, located in Manhattan’s Union Square, was defaced by unknown persons.
In December 2020, Khalistani-supporters had desecrated a Gandhi statue in Washington, DC in front of the Indian Embassy.
The then White House Press Secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, had termed the incident as “terrible”.

A nine-foot-high statue of Mahatma Gandhi was defaced with graphic words such as 'rapist' and 'Khalistan' written on it, according to the spokesperson for York Regional Police in Canada.

India on Thursday condemned the desecration of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at a Vishnu temple in the Richmond Hill city of Ontario in Canada, which police said is being investigated as a hate crime.&nbsp; &nbsp; "We are distressed at the desecration of Mahatma Gandhi statue at Vishnu temple in Richmond Hill. This criminal, hateful act of vandalism has deeply hurt the sentiments of the Indian community in Canada. We are in contact with Canadian authorities to investigate this hate crime," the Indian Consulate General in Toronto said in a tweet.&nbsp;
The Indian High Commission in Ottawa also expressed 'deep anguish' over what it called a 'hate crime' aimed at 'terrorising' the Indian diaspora and demanded a probe into the incident.
"We are deeply anguished by this hate crime that seeks to terrorize the Indian community. It has led to increased concern and insecurity in the Indian community here. We have approached the Canadian government to investigate and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly," tweeted the high commission.&nbsp; &nbsp; The local police reportedly described this as a 'hate and bias-motivated incident'. "Someone defaced the statue with graphic words, including rapist' and Khalistan," Constable Amy Boudreau, spokesperson for York Regional Police, was quoted as saying by ANI.

The statue was donated by the Gandhi Memorial International Foundation, and was dedicated on October 2, 1986 to mark the 117th birth anniversary of Gandhi.
The 8-foot-high statue, located in Manhattan&rsquo;s Union Square, was defaced by some unknown persons on February 5, the Indian consulate said in a statement.&nbsp;

Ashish Lata Ramgobin, who is the daughter of noted rights activists Ela Gandhi and late Mewa Ramgobind, was found guilty in a six-million rand fraud and forgery case.
She allegedly provided forged invoices and documents to convince potential investors that three containers of linen were being shipped in from India.
Lata Ramgobin was also refused leave to appeal both the conviction and the sentence by the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court.
