Chief Minister N Biren Singh condemned the attack and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was killed in a gun attack by suspected militants at Mongbung village in Manipur&rsquo;s Jiribam district on Sunday morning, police said.
A policeman also suffered injuries he has been admitted to a hospital, they said.
The deceased has been identified as Ajay Kumar Jha, 43, a resident of Bihar.
&ldquo;He suffered bullet injuries in the head and was declared brought-dead in hospital. The injured policeman is undergoing treatment, but he is out of danger,&rdquo; a police officer said.
In a post on X, Chief Minister N Biren Singh condemned the attack and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
&ldquo;I strongly condemn the killing of a CRPF personnel in an attack carried out by an armed group, suspected to be Kuki militants, in Jiribam district today.
&ldquo;His supreme sacrifice in the line of duty shall not go in vain. I further extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased soldier, while praying for the speedy recovery of the ones injured during the attack,&rdquo; Singh said.
Gunshots were reportedly heard in the village on Saturday night, too, he said.
Additional security forces have been deployed at Mongbung from adjacent hill areas following Sunday&rsquo;s attack, another official said.
A vehicle belonging to security personnel has been damaged in the gun attack, he added.
Manipur has been rocked by ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities since May last year, which has claimed more than 200 lives.

A major fire broke out at a building in Manipur near Chief Minister Biren Singh's bungalow in the capital Imphal city on Saturday.
A video showed massive fire emanating from a building near the high-security secretariat complex, which is just a few hundred metres from Singh's official bungalow.
According to reports, three fire tenders were deployed to the scene, and the flames were doused within an hour. No damage was reported. The cause of the fire is not known yet.
The building belonged to the family of the late IAS officer T Kipgen. The building has been vacant since violence broke out in Manipur last year.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, security officials have tightened security around Singh's house following the incident. &nbsp;

The Manipur government has deported at least 38 Myanmar nationals, including 11 children, to their home country through the integrated check post at Moreh in Tengnoupal district, a statement issued by the Home Department said on Wednesday.
The foreigners who entered India illegally were deported on Tuesday.
"They have been safely handed over to the Myanmar authorities by Immigration officers of the integrated check post (ICP)," the statement said.
This is in continuation to the deportation process on May 2. Then also 38 Myanmar nationals, including eight children, were deported and safely handed over to the authorities of the neighbouring country, it said.
"The Myanmarese were apprehended for entering the state/country illegally under the Foreigners Act 1946. During their period of stay in Jail/detention centres and children's homes, as applicable, they were taken proper care of and provided with all basic amenities and medical facilities," the statement signed by Commissioner (Home) Devesh Deval said.
The deportation process was carried out in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and the security forces, it said.
The state government remains steadfast in its resolve to deport all immigrants who entered the state illegally, it added.

Multiple gunshots were fired at the vehicles of the security forces, who retaliated, they said, adding, the shootout is still on near Kotlen village along a stretch of National Highway-53.
At least one personnel suffered bullet injuries during the attack, police said.
"CM Biren Singh, who is yet to reach Imphal from Delhi, was planning to visit Jiribam to take stock of the situation in the district,&rdquo; an official told PTI.
Two police outposts, a forest beat office and at least 70 houses were torched in Jiribam by suspected militants on Saturday.&nbsp;

Two CRPF personnel were killed and two others injured as militants allegedly attacked a camp of security forces in Manipur's Bishnupur district in the early hours of Saturday, police said.
The militants attacked an IRBn (India Reserve Battalion) camp at Naranseina in the Moirang police station area, they said.
"The militants fired indiscriminately from hilltops, targetting the camp. It started around 12.30 am and continued till about 2.15 am. The militants also hurled bombs, one of which exploded in the outpost of CRPF's 128 battalion," a senior police officer said.
The deceased were identified as CRPF sub-inspector N Sarkar and head constable Arup Saini, he said.
The injured were inspector Jadav Das and constable Aftab Das, he said, adding that they received splinter wounds.
The CRPF personnel were deployed to provide security to the IRBn camp.
A massive search was underway to find the perpetrators of the attack, police said.

Incidents of firing, intimidation, destruction of EVMs at some polling booths and allegations of booth capturing were reported from conflict-hit Manipur that recorded a turnout of over 68 per cent in the first phase of Lok Sabha polls on Friday.
Both the BJP and the Congress accused each other of unleashing violence and breaching the election Model Code of Conduct.
The state which has been reeling under the conflict of ethnic violence since May last year has traditionally seen a very high voter turnout. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the state recorded a turnout of 82 per cent.
Voting took place in two constituencies--Inner Manipur (32 assembly segments) and Outer Manipur (15 assembly segments)- on Friday while polling in the remaining 13 assembly segments in the Outer Manipur constituency will take place on April 26 in the second phase. &nbsp; "A voter turnout of 68.82 per cent has been recorded. While the Inner Manipur constituency has recorded 72.3 per cent turnout, the poll percentage in Outer Manipur stood at 61.98 per cent," said Pradeep Kumar Jha, Chief Electoral Officer, Manipur.
Keirao constituency in Imphal East district recorded the highest turnout among all the 32 constituencies of Inner Manipur with 83.81 per cent. &nbsp;For Outer, Chandel which has both Naga and Kuki voters recorded the highest turnout with 85.54 per cent turnout. Kuki-dominated Henglep in the Churachandpur district recorded an 80.70 per cent voter turnout while Saikul recorded the lowest with just 19.46 per cent.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh's constituency Heingang recorded an 80 per cent turnout followed by BJP candidate Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh's Nambol constituency, which recorded 79.88 per cent.
According to sources, the incidents of EVMs being destroyed were reported from at least four polling booths by unidentified miscreants in Imphal East and Imphal West.
"An EVM machine was set ablaze at Moirangkampu Sajeb in Khurai constituency in Imphal East district and a 65-year-old man was also shot at by some unidentified gunmen. There has also been vandalism in at least one more polling station, in Uripok in Imphal West," an official source said.
"He was standing near a polling station when some armed assailants opened fire. He has been taken to a hospital in Imphal for treatment," a police official said.
Booth Level Officer for Moirangkampu Sajeb, Surbala Devi said, "Suddenly two men came and asked for polling agents of the Congress and the BJP. They took the Congress agent outside by holding his hand. Then the two men fired shots at him from inside the car." In a separate incident, armed men also fired several rounds in the air near a polling booth in Thamnapokpi under the Moirang assembly constituency in Bishnupur district, prompting voters to flee, police said. &nbsp;They said additional security personnel were rushed to the spot to contain the situation.
Police officials also said that some unidentified armed men intimidated election agents of a particular political party at different places, including Uripok and Iroishemba in Imphal West district, and asked them to leave the polling stations.
"Incensed with the intimidation, voters at Iroishemba forcefully entered polling stations and destroyed election materials and equipment," the official said.
At Kiyamgei in Imphal East district's Keirao constituency, armed men fired blank shots and intimidated some polling agents.
Earlier in the day, an altercation broke out between voters and unidentified men at Khongman Zone 4 in Imphal East district, leading to damage to EVMs.
Congress candidate Bimol Akoijam also got into an argument with police personnel in a polling station at Kyamgei Heibong Makhong High School in Imphal East, where he alleged that polling agents of his party were being threatened.
BJP's state unit general secretary K Sarat Kumar alleged that Akoijam, accompanied by his supporters, visited several polling stations and provoked officials.
"Akoijam, accompanied by his supporters, visited several polling booths and disturbed the election atmosphere. We have filed a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer and Returning Officer," he told reporters.
The Congress also blamed the BJP for violence during voting in Inner Manipur.
Kh Devbrata, working president of the state unit of the Congress, told reporters: "We strongly condemn the acts of armed unidentified men entering polling stations and intimidating voters and indulging in proxy voting." "We haven't seen the government try to conduct the polling peacefully in a free and fair manner," Devbrata said.
Girish Chodankar, the election in-charge of Manipur and Nagaland for AICC, wrote on X that violence and booth capturing by armed miscreants have been witnessed in several places despite a written submission to the Chief Electoral Officer of "possible tension." "They allowed frustrated BJP supporters to forcibly capture booths and prevent common people from exercising their voting rights, making a mockery of the elections. We have demanded repolling in such booths," he added.
Several voters took to social media to claim that their votes were already found cast when they reached the poll booth. Manipur has witnessed sporadic, sometimes intense, ethnic clashes since May 3 last year between the majority Meitei community and the Kukis, resulting in the loss of more than 200 lives. While the Meiteis are now concentrated in Imphal city, the Kukis have moved to the hills.
More than 24,000 displaced people living in the relief camps were identified by the Election Commission as eligible voters and 94 special polling stations were set up for them.
No voting arrangements were made for those who left the northeastern state after the clashes.
A group of women marched to a polling booth in the Churachandpur district, which was the epicentre of the violence last year. They flashed posters and raised slogans of "No justice, no vote".
&nbsp; Ahead of polls, several bodies and civil society organisations had launched campaigns pushing for an election boycott saying "need the right to live before the right to vote".

A total of 15.44 lakh voters, including 8.02 lakh women and 246 persons of the third gender, are eligible to cast their votes in the first phase of elections in the state.
A total of 18,091 people displaced due to ethnic strife in the state can cast their votes at 85 special polling stations.
Manipur has witnessed violent ethnic clashes between hills-based Kukis and valley-based Meiteis that left over 200 dead and thousands homeless since May 3 last year.
A total of six candidates, including state Education Minister Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh of the BJP and Angomcha Bimol Akoijam of the Congress, are contesting the Inner Manipur seat.
Republican Party of India (RPI) has nominated Thounaojam Maheshwar, while there are three other Independent candidates.
Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat has 9.91 lakh voters, while Outer Manipur has 10.22 lakh voters.
In Inner Manipur, the highest concentration of 3.81 lakh voters is in Imphal West, District Election Officer Th Kirankumar said.
Voting will be held in 1,319 polling stations in Inner Manipur, in addition to 29 special polling stations set up for people displaced due to the ethnic strife, he said.

BJP has not fielded any candidate and has declared support for its ally NPF.
A total of 22 special polling stations have been established for internally displaced people in Churachandpur district and 24 in Kangpokpi, officials said.
Campaigning ended at 4 pm on Wednesday for the segments that are going to polls in the first phase. Canvassing has been low-key in the state due to the ethnic strife.

The Supreme Court on 11th March ordered the Manipur government, CBI and the NIA to file status reports on the probe and the charge sheets filed in cases of ethnic violence that erupted across Manipur.

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Manipur government, CBI and the NIA to file reports elaborating on the status of probe and the chargesheets filed in cases of ethnic-violence to help it take a decision on whether the trials can commence in Assam or be undertaken in Manipur.
The top court, meanwhile, made it clear that it cannot issue directions to the state government and law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order in Manipur in the wake of a spate of violent incidents, armed protests, blocking of the highways and the attack on the residence of a district collector in the last two months.
&ldquo;These are the matters where this court cannot give directions. We cannot be issuing directions to the civil society organisations to maintain law and order...The state government is there to maintain law and order,&rdquo; said the bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices JB Pardiwla and Manoj Misra.
It asked Attorney General R Venkataramani, appearing for the state government and the probe agencies, to take instructions on a recent report of the Justice Gita Mittal committee on the recent incidents of violence in the state.
The apex court-appointed three-judge panel headed by Justice Mittal wanted the top court to pass some orders following the recent incidents of violence.
The court asked the counsel, appearing for the panel, to provide a copy of the report to the attorney general to take instructions on the issue.
The top court referred to a communication received from a special judge in Guwahati, to whom the cases of violence in Manipur were transferred, for monitoring the probe.
The trial judge wanted a clarification about whether he can proceed with the trial in the cases which were transferred from Manipur to Guwahati in pursuance of the top court&rsquo;s directions issued on August 25, 2023.
The Assam court also wanted a direction as to how it should proceed to deal with juvenile offenders.
&ldquo;The updated status reports will be filed by the Manipur government, the NIA and the CBI with regard to the investigations. The status report should indicate the charge sheets filed as of now and the stage of investigations in other cases,&rdquo; the bench said.
&ldquo;Let us have an idea. We will take a call on whether the trial should take place in Assam or in Manipur,&rdquo; the CJI said and permitted the Manipur government also to file a response.
Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Manipur government, said it wanted the trial to be held in the state as there was a marked improvement in the situation.
&ldquo;We want to know whether the cases were ripe for the trial or not,&rdquo; the bench said, adding that a tabulated chart be filed on the status of cases.
The top court ordered the listing of petitions on Manipur violence after two weeks. The top court had, on August 25 last year, ordered transfer of several Manipur violence cases being probed by the CBI, including the sexual assault case of two women seen in a viral video being paraded naked, to Assam.
It had asked the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to nominate one or more judicial officers to deal with them.
The apex court had passed a slew of directions on judicial procedures, including virtual examination of victims and witnesses by courts, saying they have been issued &ldquo;at the present stage, bearing in mind the overall environment in Manipur and the need for ensuring a fair process of criminal justice administration&rdquo;.
&ldquo;Both sides (Kuki and Meiteis) have been hurt ...There have been victims in valleys, and in hills. It would be difficult for people who suffered in valleys to travel to hills, and the other way round. We are not on who suffered more, just the practical difficulty,&rdquo; the CJI had said, adding the top court will pass orders which will be fair to both sides.
Prior to this, the central government had ordered a CBI probe into several cases of ethnic violence in Manipur.
Manipur plunged into a frenzy of violence in May 2023 over a high court order directing the state government to consider including the non-tribal Meitei community in the list of Scheduled Tribes.
This order led to rampant ethnic clashes. More than 160 people have been killed and several hundred injured since ethnic violence first broke out in the state on May 3 when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status.&nbsp;

Manipur Police commandos on Wednesday laid down their arms in protest against the abduction of Additional Superintendent Amit Kumar Moirangthem and demanded they be allowed to retaliate when attacked.
The police commandos of all the five valley districts put down their arms asking for action against Metei radical group Arambai Tenggol and no hindrance from political executives when the forces act against the outfit, officials said.
They are protesting against the Tuesday's incident during which a group of Meira Paibis (women volunteer group) and cadres of Arambai Tenngol, a Meitei organisation, kidnapped the police officer and beat up other personnel guarding him.
The officer was rescued within hours, and is currently hospitalised.
The Army had to be called in as fresh tension mounted in Manipur East on Tuesday and four columns of the Assam Rifles were deployed after the senior police officer was abducted.
Senior police officials were talking to their personnel assuring them that strict action would be taken against the perpetrators.
"You can't keep snakes in your backyard and expect them to only bite your neighbour. This was stated by the then US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Pakistan in 2011 but today it holds good for Manipur where a section of the community was welcoming the return of these terror and radical groups," a senior security official said.
The region has witnessed escalating violence since May 3, with over 180 casualties reported after a "Tribal Solidarity March" in the hill districts protested the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The Meiteis, constituting around 53 per cent of Manipur's population and residing predominantly in the Imphal Valley, contrast the tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, who make up 40 per cent and primarily inhabit the hill districts.

The Manipur government on Friday suspended internet services in Churachandpur district for five days after violence broke out there over an action taken against a policeman.
The situation in the district remained tense this morning after the offices of the superintendent of police and the deputy commissioner were vandalised, vehicles used by CAPF were torched by a mob and the national flag at the SP office complex was pulled down, an official told PTI.
"There is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, posts and video messages inciting the public, which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation..there is imminent danger for loss of lives/ damage to public or private property and widespread disturbances to public tranquillity and communal harmony as a result of inflammatory material and false rumours," the notification said.
The violence broke out in the district on Thursday night as the mob barged into the government complex and torched vehicles hours after a head constable of the district police was suspended after he was seen with gunmen in a purported video, an official said.
Security forces fired several rounds of tear gas shells and used "minimum lethal force" to disperse the agitators and bring the situation under control.
Locals claimed that one person died and as many as 30 people were injured in the clash.
Churachandpur-based Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) called for a shutdown in the district on Friday to protest the killing of one person.
Protesters demanded the reinstatement of the head constable in the service, alleging that his suspension was "unfair".
State PWD Minister Govindas Konthoujam, considered close to Chief Minister N Biren Singh, has condemned the statement of BJP MLA from Churachandpur, Paoleinlal Haokip, alleging that he had made a "hate campaign" in the wake of the mob violence there.

ITLF, in a statement, said, " The SP should immediately revoke the suspension order and leave the district within 24 hours."&nbsp;

Fresh violence broke out in Manipur's Churachandpur on Thursday night after a mob barged into the government complex housing the SP and DC offices and torched vehicles and ransacked government property, hours after a head constable of the district police was suspended after he was allegedly seen with armed men in a video grab, an official said.
Several buses and trucks used by security forces were burnt by the agitators as hundreds of them entered the office rooms and vandalised government property, the official said.
Security forces fired several rounds of tear gas shells and used "minimum lethal force" to disperse the agitators and are currently working to bring the situation under control, he said, adding, "the situation is extremely volatile." Eyewitnesses said one person died and as many as 30 people sustained injuries in the clash.
"Trouble started in front of the Churachandpur SP office around 7.40pm soon after the suspension order by SP Sivanand Surve went viral in various social media groups," the eyewitness said.
Earlier in the day, Manipur Police had posted on X, "A mob numbering approximately 300-400 attempted to storm the office of SP CCP today, pelting stone, etc. The SF (security forces) including RAF is responding appropriately by firing tear gas shell to control the situation. Things are under watch."
Head constable Siamlalpaul was kept "under suspension with immediate effect until further orders" after a video of him with "armed men" and "sitting together with village volunteers" went viral on social media.
"This tantamount to very grave misconduct being a member of the disciplined police force," a police order said.
"A departmental inquiry is being contemplated against Siamlalpaul of Churachandpur district police, as a clip has gone viral on social media showing him making a video with armed men on February 14," the order said.

Siamlalpaul has been asked not to "leave the station without prior permission" and "his pay and allowances have been restricted to subsistence allowance admissible as per the rules", it said.
Meanwhile, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders&rsquo; Forum (ITLF) has held SP Shivanand Surve responsible for the incident.
"If the SP cannot act with fairness, we will not allow him to remain in any tribal areas. He should immediately revoke the suspension of the policeman and leave the district within 24 hours. Otherwise, Mr. Surve will bear sole responsibility for any future incident," the forum said in a statement.

A day after Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said those who entered and settled in the state after 1961 would be identified and deported, experts on Tuesday raised doubts over viability of the move.
They said the identification of illegal immigrants was a &ldquo;welcome step&rdquo; but their deportation would be difficult unless the foreign countries concerned recognise them as their bonafide citizens.

Speaking at the launch of &lsquo;Project Buniyaad&rsquo; on Monday, the chief minister said, &ldquo;Those who entered and settled in the state after 1961, irrespective of castes and communities, would be identified and deported.&rdquo; The chief minister&rsquo;s assertion comes after the Manipur cabinet had, in June 2022, approved a proposal to adopt 1961 as the base year for determining the &ldquo;native status&rdquo; of residents of the state for effective implementation of the inner line permit.
 &ldquo;In order to deport illegal immigrants, the foreign country concerned must accept them as their bonafide citizens. If the foreign country does not recognise the immigrants as their citizens, how will they be deported?&rdquo; Pradip Phanjoubam, a political analyst, told PTI.
Naga leader and Forum for Restoration of Peace convenor Ashang Kashar said deportation cannot be done by the Manipur government alone.
&ldquo;Identification of immigrants is crucial. Those who would be identified as illegal immigrants should not have the rights enjoyed by the original inhabitants. For instance, they should not have voting rights,&rdquo; Kashar told PTI.
The decision to adopt 1961 as the base year for ILP implementation is a &ldquo;welcome step towards solving issues confronting the state&rdquo;, Phanjoubam said.
&ldquo;But many of those are living in the state over several decades. They have become naturalised citizens. In case of deportation, there are legal implications that need to be considered,&rdquo; he said.
A Manipur government official had, last year, said 2,187 people were staying in the state after Myanmar&rsquo;s military ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi there in February 2021.
The Centre has initiated steps to stop a free movement regime along the India-Myanmar border.
Coordinating Committee (COCOMI), a joint body of several Imphal valley-based organisations, said the chief minister&rsquo;s statement shows that the government has acknowledged the issue of illegal immigrants who settled in the state.
&ldquo;This is the core of today&rsquo;s conflict. We can learn from Assam&rsquo;s NRC experience. The first thing to do is to identify the illegal immigrants,&rdquo; COCOMI spokesperson Khuraijam Athouba told PTI.
Notably, Manipur has been witnessing recurring bouts of violence since ethnic clashes first erupted in May last year. More than 180 people have been killed since then.
Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur&rsquo;s population and live mostly in the Imphal valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mainly in the hill districts.

The clashes have occurred over a number of grievances that both sides have against the other, however, the flashpoint of the crisis has been a move to give Meiteis Scheduled Tribe status, which has since been rolled back and an attempt to turf out tribals living in protected forest areas.&nbsp;

The mob, first, targeted the 3rd Indian Reserve Battalion at Khangabok in Thoubal district and security forces repelled them using minimum force.

Two Manipur police commandos were killed and six others injured in the Moreh area on January 17 after fresh violence broke out in the state. In a statement on X, Manipur Police said armed militants mounted an attack on the police team which resulted in the deaths of two.
"In the incident, one personnel of 6th Manipur Rifles namely Wangkhem Somorjit Meetei S/O (L) W. Chaoton Singh of Malom Tulihal Mayai Leikai (R/No.- 0620211015) was martyred in the line of duty," said Manipur Police.
In a separate incident in the Thoubal district, three personnel of the Border Security Force sustained bullet injuries and were sent for treatment.
"The mob attempted to breach Thoubal Police Headquarters, prompting the security forces to use legal force. Armed miscreants from among the mob fired with live rounds. As a result, 03 (three) personnel from BSF sustained bullet injuries," said Manipur Police.

Commissioner Home T Ranjit Singh in a letter to Additional Secretary (Police II Division), Ministry of Home Affairs, said: "The law and order situation in the border town of Moreh has become a matter of serious concern as there has been continuous exchange of fire and this has resulted in the death of one IRB personnel this morning." "In view of the prevalent situation in Moreh, medical emergency may arise anytime", the letter stated.
The Manipur government has requested for helicopters from MHA for at least seven days as Moreh town witnessed heavy exchange of fire between security forces and suspected Kuki militants armed with sophisticated weapons at more than three different locations on Wednesday morning.
Moreh is located 105 km from the state capital Imphal. Due to the volatile law and order situation in Tengnoupal district and threat of ambush from Kuki militants and highway blockade by tribal women, helicopter services have become the only convenient way for airlifting injured personnel.
The letter also informed that MHA had on January 4 asked to intimate specific period and specify the requirement of MHA Air assets (Helicopter), as it cannot be possible to provide MHA Air Asset continuously in one place for a longer period due to limited resources in North East region.

The Manipur government has issued an alert after leakage of 'heavy fuel' from the Leimakhong power station resulted in a spillover of the discharge into streams flowing through Imphal Valley.
These streams from areas like Kantosabal and Sekmai join the Imphal river downstream raising fears of an environmental calamity. Chief Minister N Biren Singh's office has ordered immediate action "making use of all available resources in terms of machinery, manpower and expertise" to prevent such a disaster.
Video footage showed officials trying to clean up the oil spill even as small fires could be seen in other parts of the streams.

Calling the government's move unfortunate, Congress leader Keisham Megachandra said it is a murder of democracy and a violation of people's rights.

The Congress on Wednesday claimed that the Manipur government has declined to give its nod for the venue where the party's 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' is scheduled to begin on January 14.
The party termed the state government's decision as a "violation of people's rights", and said an alternative place to start the proposed march is being considered.
However, no comment from the state government is available.
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president Keisham Megachandra said, "We met Chief Minister N Biren Singh and sought permission for the venue of 'Bharat Joro Nyay Yatra' at Hatta Kangjeibung in Imphal East district from where the rally is scheduled to be flagged off. However, the chief minister has declined to permit the same." A Congress delegation met Singh at the CM Secretariat.
The 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' is scheduled to traverse 6,713 km in buses and on foot. It will cover 110 districts, 100 Lok Sabha seats and 337 assembly segments in 66 days.
According to the proposed programme, it will culminate on March 20 in Mumbai.
The Congress has applied to launch the march from Hatta Kangjeibung in Imphal East district.
"It is very unfortunate. It is a murder of democracy and a violation of people's rights. The proposed venue is also a public ground," Keisham said while speaking on the state government's decision.
The MPCC chief's comment comes a day after the chief minister said giving permission to Congress' 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' was under "active consideration" and a decision would be taken after receiving reports from security agencies.
"We will now arrange for an alternative place. Two or three places are being considered as of now. We will begin the march on January 14 as per the schedule," Megachandra said.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, party leader Rahul Gandhi and many others from different parts of the country will come to the state for the programme, he said.
