A Delhi court on Wednesday sent former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia to 14-day judicial custody in a money laundering case arising out of the excise policy matter.
Special Judge M K Nagpal sent the senior AAP leader to jail till April 5 after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) produced him on conclusion of his custodial interrogation in the matter.
The anti-money laundering probe agency has so far quizzed Sisodia for seven days in its custody in the matter.
On Tuesday, the special court deferred the hearing to March 25 on the bail plea of Sisodia in the main case being probed by the CBI.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia who is in judicial custody in connection with the alleged Delhi excise policy scam in his bail plea on Tuesday told a Delhi court that his wife was unwell and his son was studying abroad, and hence it was his responsibility to look after her.
Opposing Sisodia's bail, the Central Bureau of Investigation said he could influence witnsess and hamper the probe by destroying or hiding the evidence, if set free.
The former Delhi minister contended that he cooperated with the probe agency &nbsp;and searches did not reveal any incriminating evidence against him. His lawyer argued that Sisodia was not a flight risk, and that his custodial probe was also needed anymore.
In response, CBI counsel said the probe agency has 60 days' time to file the chargesheet and investigation will be seriously compromised if Sisodia is granted bail, NDTV reported.
Meanwhile, the court on Tuesday sought the Enforcement Directorate's response on a bail plea of former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia in the money laundering case.
On March 17, the court extended the ED custody of the AAP leader by five days till March 22.
The ED arrested Sisodia on March 9 in the Tihar Jail, where he was lodged in connection with a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case about alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy for 2021-22. The CBI arrested Sisodia on February 26.

A court on Friday extended by five days the Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody of AAP leader Manish Sisodia who has been arrested in a money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy.
Sisodia was produced before special judge M K Nagpal, who extended his custody till March 22. The ED had sought a seven-day extension of Sisodia's custody.
Heavy security deployment was made inside and outside the Rouse Avenue Court premises.
The Enforcement Directorate told the court that crucial information had come up during Sisodia's custody and he had to be confronted with other accused persons. These included former excise commissioner Rahul Singh, Dinesh Arora and Amit Arora.
The former Delhi deputy chief minister had also to be confronted with his former secretary C Arvind, the ED said. C Arvind is not an accused in the case.
The probe agency also told the court that voluminous data from Sisodia's email and mobile and other devices is also being forensically analysed.
Opposing the ED's plea, Sisodia's lawyer said there is not a whisper from the agency regarding the proceeds of the crime, which is fundamental to the case. There is no justification for the extension of custody and Sisodia was confronted only with four people during his earlier seven-day custody, he said.

A city court on Friday sent former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, arrested in a money laundering case related to the excise policy, to the Enforcement Directorate's custody till March 17.
Special judge M K Nagpal allowed the anti-money laundering probe agency to interrogate the senior AAP leader in custody. The ED had sought Sisodia's custody for 10 days.
Earlier the court heard arguments of the ED and Sisodia's lawyers on the AAP leader's custody.
There was heavy security presence within and outside the Rouse Avenue Courts.
The lawyer for the federal anti-money laundering probe agency alleged Sisodia made false statements about the 'scam' and that it wanted to unearth the modus operandi of the perpetrators and confront him with the other accused.
ED's counsel Zoheb Hossain also claimed before a special court that Sisodia destroyed his phone, an important piece of evidence in the investigation.
The claims of the ED counsel were contested by a battery of lawyers who represented Sisodia.
Senior advocates Dayan Krishnan, Mohit Mathur and Siddharth Aggarwal said the excise policy was accepted by the Lieutenant Governor who must have examined it.
Sisodia's lawyers while opposing the ED's plea for his custody, said it is the executive's job to make policy which goes through several layers of scrutiny.
"How can ED look into policy making in money-laundering case," the AAP leader's counsel asked the court.
"ED has not found a single penny from my client...the case is entirely based on hearsay," the lawyer said.
The ED arrested Sisodia on Thursday evening in the Tihar jail, where he was lodged in connection with a case being probed by the CBI pertaining to alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy for 2021-22.

The federal probe agency also made a fresh arrest in this case as it took into custody Hyderabad-based liquor businessman Arun Ramchandra Pillai on Monday evening, they said.
The ED investigators reached the Tihar Jail to record the statement of Sisodia under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). &nbsp;The CBI had arrested Sisodia on February 26 in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi liquor or excise policy for 2021-22. He is lodged in judicial custody till March 20.
The ED obtained the court's permission to question the 51-year-old Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, who till recently was the deputy CM of Delhi, in cell number 1 of the jail for three days.
The agency is expected to question him about the alleged change and destruction of cell phones that were in his possession and the policy decisions and the timeline followed by him as the excise minister of Delhi. These charges were made by it in its supplementary complaints filed before the court.

The CBI had arrested Sisodia on February 26 in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy for 2021-22.
Vijayan, in his letter, said the arrest of Sisodia has "lent further force to the argument" about certain actions of the central investigation agencies.
The Chief Minister said there was no incriminating evidence like cash seizure in case of Sisodia.
Vijayan said the AAP leader is an elected representative of the people and has been appearing before the investigating agencies in response to their summons.
"Unless the arrest was an imperative for preventing the impediment to the investigation, the desirable act would have been to avoid it. As per information coming out in public domain, nothing incriminating like cash seizure has taken place in the case of Sisodia. While law has to take its course, it is equally important that the widespread perception that Sisodia is being targeted for political reasons and need to be dispelled," Vijayan said in his letter.
The CPI(M) leader said any excessive actions on part of anyone concerned should be avoided as emphasis should be on the principle of cooperative federalism.
Vijayan, while refraining from commenting on the merits of the case under investigation, said the arrest of Sisodia has "lent further force to the argument" about actions taken by the probe agencies.
"It is the golden principle of natural justice that justice should not only be done, but seem to be done too," he pointed out.
The Chief Minister also expressed hope that guidance from the Prime Minister will go a long way in changing the present perception, which is reflected in the letter of the important political leaders including some CMs in this matter.
Sisodia is currently lodged in judicial custody till March 20.
Vijayan's letter comes two days after leaders of eight opposition parties, including Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, wrote a joint letter to the Prime minister alleging "blatant misuse of central agencies" against members of the opposition.

Under the policy, Delhi was divided into 32 excise zones and 849 liquor vends were awarded to private businesses through open bidding.&nbsp;
The policy which was brought into effect in order to increase the government's revenues and better customer experience was met with large-scale opposition from the public as well as the Opposition.
"It aimed to end the liquor mafia and black marketing, increase revenue and improve the consumer experience, and ensure equitable distribution of liquor vends," reported The Indian Express.&nbsp;
The government also provided relaxations to liquor sellers by allowing them to offer discounts to consumers and also set their own prices irrespective of the product's maximum retail price (MRP). WHAT IS MANISH SISODIA ACCUSED OF? &nbsp;&nbsp;
In July 2022, the policy was embroiled in controversy after a report by the Chief Secretary of Delhi Naresh Kumar stated that Sisodia, who held the excise portfolio then, provided undue advantages to liquor vend licensees in lieu of 'kickbacks' and 'commissions', which were allegedly used by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, the Indian Express reported.&nbsp;

The Chief Secretary's report also stated that Sisodia allegedly made changes to the excise policy without the approval of the L-G and the Delhi cabinet which was illegal and in violation of the Delhi Excise Rules, 2010 and the Transaction of Business Rules, 1993.
Kumar's report further alleged that Sisodia gave undue benefits to liquor licensees by revising the rates of foreign liquor and removing the levy of an import pass fee of Rs 50 per case of beer. According to the report, this made foreign liquor cheaper for retail, resulting in revenue loss for the state exchequer.&nbsp;
The IE further reported, officials said that if any changes are made to a policy that has already been implemented, the excise department needs to place them before the cabinet, and forward it to the L-G for final approval.
Following the Chief Secretary's report, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena ordered a CBI probe over alleged violations of rules during the implementation of the excise policy. The Delhi government was then forced to roll back the excise policy and revert to the old liquor policy in July 2022.&nbsp;
The CBI lodged an FIR against Sisodia and 14 others in the case on 17 August 2022 under various sections of the IPC, including 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 477A (falsification of records), and section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.&nbsp;
The federal agency also conducted 31 raids across states and Union territories in the same month, including at Sisodia's residence in Delhi.&nbsp;
Sisodia was summoned by the CBI in October and his statement was recorded.&nbsp;
On February 26, 2023, during the second round of questioning, Sisodia was grilled by the investigation agency for around 8 hours and then arrested.&nbsp;

Sisodia, who was produced before the court on Saturday on the expiry of his five-day CBI custody, claimed that he was "sitting for eight to nine hours and answering the same questions again and again" and termed it "mental harassment".
To this, the judge, who had in the last hearing directed the CBI not to use the third degree on the accused, told the probe agency not to ask the "same questions again and again". "If you have something new, ask him," the judge said.

Senior AAP leaders, meanwhile, shared messages penned by students for Sisodia.
Atishi, who will soon be included in the Cabinet as a minister, shared images of the messages on Twitter. "BJP people: No matter how many false allegations you make, but the love that the children of Delhi have got Manish Sisodia, you cannot shake it," she said.
Jasmine Shah also retweeted similar messages and said: "Wow... Children of Delhi are showing an unprecedented outpouring of love for their favourite Education minister with messages of #ILoveManishSisodia." Kapoor, however, urged Delhi LG V K Saxena in a tweet to stop the campaign.
In another tweet, the BJP leader tagged NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo and alleged that parents were being pressured by AAP to get such messages penned for Sisodia. "@NCPCR_ &amp; @KanoongoPriyank ji Please see how shamelessly AAP is campaigning for Manish Sisodia by pressurising government school students. Parents are being pressurised to write letters otherwise students will be failed in exams."&nbsp;

Following a meeting with AAP MLAs and MCD councillors on Wednesday to discuss the party's strategies in the light of recent developments, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said that the party is going to hold door-to-door campaign and speak with every person.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Addressing reporters after the meeting the CM said, "the entire country is proud of former AAP ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain and alleged they were arrested just to "stop the good work being done" in the national capital

The Delhi CM further alleged that Sisodia's arrest in the excise policy case was just an excuse, and asserted that new ministers would carry on the good work of the government at double the speed.

Arrested AAP ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain have resigned from the Delhi cabinet. Their resignations have been accepted by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. Sisodia, who handled the education ministry, stepped down following his arrest for alleged corruption in Delhi's liquor policy. He is currently in CBI custody.
Satyendar Jain, who is currently in jail, was arrested last year by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to entertain the bail plea of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who is in CBI custody in connection with the excise policy case.
"We are not inclined to entertain the petition under Article 32 at this stage," a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha said.
The bench observed that just because the incident has happened in Delhi, Sisodia cannot come to the apex court directly as he has his remedies before the trial court concerned as well as the Delhi High Court.
Senior advocate A M Singhvi, appearing for Sisodia, questioned the need of arresting the AAP leader saying policy decisions were taken at different rung and moreover, no money was recovered.
He also said that the Lieutenant Governor was also part of the policy decision in the excise policy.
As the apex court observed that it would not entertain the plea at this stage, Singhvi withdrew it.&nbsp;

Ahead of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister's presentation in court by the CBI, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal claimed that "most CBI officers" were against Manish Sisodia's arrest.
The Aam Aadmi Party chief added that all CBI officers "have huge respect" for Sisodia, and don't have any evidence against him. But political pressure on CBI to arrest the AAP leader was "so high" that the officers had to "obey their political masters", Kejriwal added.
In response, BJP leader Manoj Tiwari said that Kejriwal had spread similar "fake news" about the Intelligence Bureau in Gujarat. Tiwari said that Kejriwal was scared at the possibility of the CBI probe growing larger.

Sisodia was sent to 5-day CBI custody on 27 February.
