Former prime minister Manmohan Singh slammed his successor Narendra Modi for misconstruing his remarks to wrongly claim that Muslims have the first right to the nation's wealth. In a letter addressed to the citizens ahead of the last phase of the Lok Sabha election in Punjab, Singh in a veiled reference to the speech said that he had &ldquo;never distinguished one community from another&rdquo;.
In the three-page letter, Singh said that Modi is the first prime minister to have reduced the dignity of the office, by engaging in vile, unparliamentary, and low-level language to target a particular section or opposition.
He said, "I have been watching the political discussion very carefully during this election campaign. Modiji has engaged in vile hate speeches, which are downright divisive. Modi ji is the first Prime Minister who has reduced the dignity of office, and with it the seriousness of the Prime Minister&rsquo;s office. No previous Prime Minister used such vile, unparliamentary and low-level language to target a particular section or opposition. They have also given me some wrong statements. I have never in my life distinguished one community from another. This is the special right and habit of BJP.&rdquo;
He urged the voters of Punjab to vote to save democracy and the Constitution.
&nbsp;&ldquo;I appeal to every voter of Punjab to vote for development and coordinated progress. I urge all young people to vote carefully, and to vote for the future. Only Congress can guarantee a development-led progressive future, where democracy and the Constitution will be protected.&rdquo;
Modi, in his every election rally had been repeatedly claiming that Congress aims to redistribute wealth from Hindus, and give to Hindus.

The row over Manmohan Singh's remarks on Muslims getting the first claim over the nation's resources continued to rage on Friday.
A day after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting a meeting to explain its manifesto, the BJP shared a 2009 video of the former prime minister to counter Congress.
In the video, Singh was heard saying, "Minorities, particularly Muslim minorities, if they are poor, have prior claim to the resources of the nation."&nbsp;
In his two-page letter, he told the prime minister that he is being misinformed by his advisors about things that are not even written in the 'Nyay Patra' -- the Congress' manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections.
The letter comes after the prime minister attacked the Congress over its manifesto, alleging that the party aims to "redistribute the wealth" of people and give it away to "infiltrators".
Modi also accused the Congress of snatching women's "mangalsutra".
In his letter, Kharge said the Congress' 'Nyay Patra' aims at providing "nyay (justice)" to the youngsters, women, farmers, labourers and marginalised people across all castes and communities.
"It has become your habit to seize on a few words taken out of context and create a communal divide. You are lowering the dignity of the chair by speaking in this manner," he said.
"You are being misinformed by your advisors about things that are not even written in our manifesto. I would be more than happy to meet you in person to explain our 'Nyay Patra' so that, as prime minister of the country, you don't make any statements that are false," he added.
The Congress chief also said he is neither shocked nor surprised by the language used by the prime minister in his recent speeches.
"It was expected that you and other leaders from your party would start speaking in this manner after you saw the dismal performance of the BJP in the first phase of the elections," Kharge said in the letter.

Singh represented Assam for five years in the Upper House and then shifted to Rajasthan in 2019.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said the country is indebted to former prime minister Manmohan Singh for the economic reforms.
India needs a liberal economic policy with the intention to provide its benefits to poor people, Gadkari said while speaking at TIOL Awards 2022 event.
The economic reforms started by Singh as the finance minister in 1991 gave a new direction to India as it ushered in a liberal economy, he added.
"Liberal economy ke karan desh ko nayee disha mili, uske liye Manmohan Singh Ka desh reeni hai (The country is indebted to Manmohan Singh for the liberalisation that gave a new direction)," Gadkari said.
He recalled that he could raise money to build roads in Maharashtra when he was a minister in Maharashtra in the mid-1990s due to economic reforms initiated by the former prime minister.
Gadkari asserted that liberal economic policy is for farmers and poor people.
The awards function was organised by a portal 'TaxIndiaOnline'.
He also said China is a good example of how liberal economic policy can help in the development of any country.
To accelerate economic growth, he said India will need more capex investment.
The road transport and highways minister said the NHAI is also raising money from the common man for the construction of highways.

N R Narayana Murthy, co-founder of IT giant Infosys, has lamented that economic activities in India were "stalled" and decisions were not taken by the Manmohan Singh government in time in the Congress-led UPA-era.
During his interaction with young entrepreneurs and students at the Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad (IIMA) on Friday, Murthy expressed confidence that young minds can make India a worthy competitor of China, the world's second largest economy.
"I used to be on the board of HSBC in London (between 2008 and 2012). In the first few years, when China was mentioned two to three times in the boardroom (during meetings), India's name would be mentioned once," said the well-known businessman in response to a question on where he sees India in the future.
"But unfortunately, I don't know what happened (to India) afterwards. (Former PM) Manmohan Singh was an extraordinary individual and I have tremendous respect for him. But, somehow, India stalled (during UPA-era). Decisions were not taken and everything was delayed," said Murthy.
The IT czar said when he left HSBC (in 2012), India's name hardly found a mention during meetings, while China's name was taken nearly 30 times.
"So, I think it is your (young generation) responsibility to make people mention India's name whenever they mention any other country's name, particularly China. I think you people can do that," said Murthy.
The former Infosys chairman said there was a time when most Westerners looked down upon India, but today, there is a certain level of respect for the country, which has now become the world's fifth largest economy.
According to him, the economic reforms of 1991, when Manmohan Singh was the finance minister, and the present Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA government's schemes like 'Make In India' and 'Startup India' have helped the country gain ground.
"When I was of your age, there was not much responsibility because not much was expected from neither me nor India. Today, there is an expectation that you will take the country forward. I think you people can make India a worthy competitor of China," said Murthy.

The BJP had been in power for more than seven years and was still blaming first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru for the problems of the people, former prime minister and Congress leader Manmohan Singh said on Thursday in a scathing attack against the Modi-led government.
Targeting the Central government on a host of issues, including the farmers’ agitation, foreign policy, price rise and unemployment, Singh said ahead of the Punjab elections on February 20 that the BJP’s nationalism was based on the British policy of “divide and rule”.
The Congress played the message delivered in Punjabi at a press conference here.
According to Singh, the government had proved to be a “complete failure” on the issue of foreign policy. The Chinese army, he alleged, was occupying “our pious land for the last one year but efforts are being made to bury this issue”.
“Our relations with neighbouring nations are also deteriorating,” Singh said.
He said the government does not have trust in the country's constitution and “institutions are continuously being weakened”.
"On the one hand, people are facing problems of price rise and unemployment, on the other, the present government, which has been in power for the last seven and a half years, rather than admitting their mistakes and making amends, is still blaming first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru for being responsible for people's problems," Singh said in his video statement.
The former prime minister also referred to the security lapse of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy being stuck on a flyover in Ferozepur last month.
"A few days ago, in the name of the prime minister's security, an attempt was made to defame Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and the people of the state," he said.       "During the farmers’ agitation too, an attempt was made to defame Punjab and Punjabiyat," he said.
     The world salutes the bravery, patriotism and sacrifice of Punjabis, but the NDA government did not talk about any of this, Singh said.
“As a true Indian hailing from Punjab, all these things deeply hurt me,” he added.
Singh said there are many challenges before the people of Punjab and it is very important to deal with them effectively.
It is very important to address the issues of Punjab's development, its farming and unemployment, he said.
“And this work can only be done by the Congress,” he said as he appealed to the people of Punjab to vote for the Congress.
The Congress leader said he had worked as prime minister for 10 years and had always preferred that his work should speak for itself.

According to Singh, the government had proved to be a &ldquo;complete failure&rdquo; on the issue of foreign policy. The Chinese army, he alleged, was occupying &ldquo;our pious land for the last one year but efforts are being made to bury this issue&rdquo;.
&ldquo;Our relations with neighbouring nations are also deteriorating,&rdquo; Singh said.
He said the government does not have trust in the country's constitution and &ldquo;institutions are continuously being weakened&rdquo;.
"On the one hand, people are facing problems of price rise and unemployment, on the other, the present government, which has been in power for the last seven and a half years, rather than admitting their mistakes and making amends, is still blaming first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru for being responsible for people's problems," Singh said in his video statement.
The former prime minister also referred to the security lapse of Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s convoy being stuck on a flyover in Ferozepur last month.
"A few days ago, in the name of the prime minister's security, an attempt was made to defame Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and the people of the state," he said.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;"During the farmers&rsquo; agitation too, an attempt was made to defame Punjab and Punjabiyat," he said.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;The world salutes the bravery, patriotism and sacrifice of Punjabis, but the NDA government did not talk about any of this, Singh said.
&ldquo;As a true Indian hailing from Punjab, all these things deeply hurt me,&rdquo; he added.
Singh said there are many challenges before the people of Punjab and it is very important to deal with them effectively.
It is very important to address the issues of Punjab's development, its farming and unemployment, he said.
&ldquo;And this work can only be done by the Congress,&rdquo; he said as he appealed to the people of Punjab to vote for the Congress.
The Congress leader said he had worked as prime minister for 10 years and had always preferred that his work should speak for itself.

In a statement on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of economic liberalisation, he said that on this day 30 years ago, in 1991, the Congress "ushered in significant reforms of India's economy and paved a new path for the nation's economic policy".
"Over the last three decades, successive governments have followed this path to catapult our nation to a $3 trillion economy and into the league of the world's largest economies," he added.
