The 52-year-old Mandaviya won the Porbandar Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat by defeating his nearest Congress rival Lalit Vasoya by a margin of 3.83 lakh votes.
Simultaneously, Mandaviya was also given charge of the ministry of chemicals and fertilisers in the new cabinet unveiled on Monday.
Additionally, Raksha Khadse, a three-time BJP MP from Maharashtra's Raver, was made Minister of State (Sports) under Mandaviya.
The 37-year-old Raksha is the daughter-in-law of Eknath Khadse, an NCP leader of the Sharad Pawar faction who has decided to switch back to the BJP.
She won the 2024 Lok Sabha election by nearly 3 lakh votes, defeating her nearest rival Shriram Patil from the NCP-Sharad Pawar faction.
Her husband, Nikhil Khadse, died in 2013.
Mandaviya was entrusted with the health portfolio in the middle of 2021 when the country was battling the COVID-19 crisis. At that time, he had replaced Dr Harsh Vardhan, who was dropped from the Council of Ministers as part of a reshuffle.
Mandaviya's ministry was then tasked with ramping up the supply of oxygen and medicines and overseeing the vaccination programme during the severe second wave of COVID-19. In the newly sworn in government, the health ministry has been given to J P Nadda.
The just-concluded polls were Mandaviya's first Lok Sabha election. He was born in Bhavnagar on June 1, 1972.
Before being nominated as a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat, he had won as an MLA from Palitana assembly seat of Bhavnagar district in 2002.
The outgoing Thakur was among the 37 ministers dropped from the third successive Modi government. Thakur held the post since July 7, 2021 serving as the sports minister for nearly three years.
India achieved its best-ever performance at the Olympics during his tenure, winning a record seven medals in the Tokyo Games barely a few weeks after he took over the ministry from Kiren Rijiju following a reshuffle.
He was also at the helm of affairs when the government decided to make medal winners in all Khelo India competitions eligible for government jobs after a revision in criteria.
When this was announced in March, Thakur said the move was in keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "vision of a robust sports ecosystem, nurturing talent at grassroots level and turning sports into a lucrative and viable career option." During Thakur's tenure as the sports minister, India also started making a pitch to launch an ambitious bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games for the first time ever.
Bullish about India securing the hosting rights, Thakur has always maintained that a part of the credit for the country's improving sporting performances goes to the government's flagship Khelo India initiative, which was launched in 2017 and gets a lion's share of budgetary allocation.
Thakur, who began his political career in 2008 and has represented the Hamirpur constituency in Himachal Pradesh five times, had also reckoned the country will be among the top-five medal-winning nations in the world sooner than later.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday reviewed the Covid response mock drill at the Centre-run Safdarjung Hospital here to check its readiness to deal with any increase in the number of coronavirus cases.
Amid a spurt in COVID-19 cases in some countries, the Centre has asked states and union territories to conduct mock drills at all Covid hospitals as part of precautionary measures.
"I reviewed the Covid response mock drill at Safdarjung Hospital. This mock drill was necessary to know how prepared our hospitals are," the minister said.
&ldquo;Covid cases are rising all over the world and India might witness a spike in cases too. Hence it is important that the entire Covid infrastructure in terms of equipment, processes and human resources are at a state of operational readiness&rdquo;, he stated.
Clinical readiness at hospitals is crucial, Mandaviya said while noting that government as well as private hospitals are undertaking mock drills.

As Covid mock drills began in hospitals across the country, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya visited Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital to review the exercise.
The minister was seen interacting with doctors and other officials amid a push to prepare healthcare personnel to deal with a possible spike in Covid cases, amid a surge in China and some other countries.
The minister visited the 44-bedded Covid centre at the hospital, the triage and testing area which has been created by the hospital along with a Severe Acute Respiratory Infection ward in the makeshift facility which already existed. &nbsp;The health minister also interacted with the hospital officials and instructed them to be prepared for any fresh outbreak.
Dr B L Sherwal, the Medical Superintendent of the Safdarjung Hospital, said, "All symptomatic patients shall be screened, assessed and tested right there in the Covid centre.The report shall be made available within one to two hours following which the decision on admission or discharge shall be taken. Till that time the patient can be monitored. All beds have oxygen facilities." Dr Neeraj Gupta, a professor in the Department of Pulmonary, Critical care and Sleep medicine at Safdarjung Hospital, said of the 44 beds, six beds are equipped with a ventilator with monitors.
Besides there is also an 18-bedded dedicated Covid ICU, he said.
"Apart from that there are 81 beds available for Covid treatment. If need be, we can make more available," Dr Gupta said.
Four international travellers from Myanmar, who tested positive for Covid at the Delhi airport, are admitted at the Safdarjung Hospital and their samples have been sent for genome sequencing "They were asymptomatic. They will be discharged once they test negative," Dr Sherwal informed. (with PTI inputs)

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting on the Covid situation, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya is set to meet with his counterparts from state governments.
Mandaviya's meeting with state and Union Territory health ministers on 23 December 2022 comes a day after he made a suo motu statement in Parliament on the pandemic situation.
"We are constantly monitoring the situation. There are no direct flights between China and India but people come via other routes," he said.
He said the focus is to ensure that no unknown variant of the virus enters India and at the same time there is no impediment to travelling.

Congress leader Pawan Khera on 21 December 2022 enquired whether the Union Health Minister had written similar letters to BJP leaders in Rajasthan and Karnataka who are also conducting marches.
"We are wondering why a similar letter was not sent to the president of BJP in Rajasthan Satish Punia who is carrying out a Janakrosh Yatra there. We understand there is not much of a response to that Janakrosh Yatra, there are no people there," Khera told reporters.

Mansukh Mandaviya will meet secretaries of health and Ayush ministries, and officials of key health bodies a day after the Union government advised states to ramp up genome sequencing of positive samples to keep track of newer variants of the Covid virus.
In a letter to states and UTs, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said such an exercise will enable timely detection of newer variants, if any, circulating in the country and will facilitate undertaking requisite public health measures.
He highlighted that India with its focus on the five-fold strategy of test-track-treat-vaccination and adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviour has been able to restrict the transmission of the coronavirus and is recording around 1,200 cases on a weekly basis.
Public health challenge of COVID-19 still persists around the world with around 35 lakh cases being reported weekly, Bhushan said.

Amid a rise in Covid cases in some European and East Asian countries, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday directed officials to maintain a high level of alertness and surveillance, and carry out genomic sequencing aggressively.
At a high-level meeting, chaired by the minister, the government's decision of resuming scheduled international flights from March 27, the vaccination situation and the level of genomic surveillance were reviewed.
India reported 2,539 fresh Covid-19&nbsp;cases and 60 deaths in 24 hours on Thursday morning.&nbsp;
China has been witnessing the worst outbreak of Covid-19 in the last two years forcing the country to place millions under lockdown in desperate attempts to curb the surge. The situation has also deteriorated in Hong Kong.

Mandaviya Sunday told states they have collectively utilised only over 17 per cent of the Rs 23,123 crore Emergency Covid-19 Response Package that was approved by the Cabinet last August.
The package was to ramp up medical infrastructure after the deadly Covid second wave last year.
Mandaviya reviewed the Covid situatiobn with state health ministers and senior officials in the backdrop of India reporting a sharp rise in Covid cases. On Sunday, India reported ,close to 28,000 new cases in 24 hours and the cumulative active caseload touched 1.22 lakh. Just a week back, on December 26, India had reported just 6,531 cases, and the active case load was 75,841.

The Health Minister said other countries were witnessing &ldquo;3-4 times the surge in Covid-19 cases in comparison to their earlier peaks&rdquo; and noted that in India too, a &ldquo;high surge in cases can overwhelm the medical system&rdquo;, The Indian Express has reported.
Mandaviya asked the states ,to leave no stone unturned in ramping up medical infrastructure to manage a high surge in Covid cases.

Resident doctors in Delhi, who have been protesting over the delay in NEET-PG 2021 counselling, have decided to continue their agitation. The decision came on Tuesday after a meeting between their federation's delegation and the Union health minister failed to make any headway.
After the meeting, the doctors' representatives said that Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya's "response was not satisfactory".
Pointing to the Covid situation and the looming challenge of Omicron, which has created huge pressure on hospitals and medical professionals, junior doctors have threatened a complete shutdown of medical services if fresh hands are not brought in. Delay in college allotments is unacceptable now, they say.
The doctors protests have impacted patient care at Centre-run facilities such as Safdarjung, RML and Lady Hardinge hospitals and some of the Delhi government-run hospitals.
The doctors have been protesting for the last 13 days over delay in NEET PG Counselling , which has delayed college allotments of postgraduate medical students in Delhi.
Earlier on Tuesday, the doctors intensified their protest following a police crackdown on Monday. The protest by resident doctors took a dramatic turn on Monday, as medics and police personnel had faced off in streets, with both sides claiming several persons suffered injury.
On Tuesday, police stopped doctors from marching to the Supreme Court and blocked all gates of Delhi's Safdarjung hospital where they had gathered for protest.

According to a report by ET, Apollo and Fortis are considering raising treatment package rates by 5-10% amid rising overhead costs. The revision of package rates is likely to happen by the end of 2021-22.
Following this, Apollo Hospitals in a statement said the cost of sanitation, consumables, human resources and general inflation are eating into our margins, so at some point we have to pass on the cost.
