In the year 2023, approximately 16 million new investors entered the equity market. In terms of investor numbers, Uttar Pradesh has surpassed Gujarat. This year, Uttar Pradesh added 2.3 million new investors.

In the realm of registered investors, Uttar Pradesh has overtaken Gujarat, marking a significant stride in India's investment landscape. Ashish Chauhan, Managing Director and CEO of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), shared this information during the 10th SBI Banking and Economics Conclave on CNBC TV18. Simultaneously, India's equity market has been consistently reaching record highs.
Commenting on the evolving equity market, Ashish Chauhan remarked, "Now, in terms of market capitalization, we are the fourth-largest market globally, following the United States, China, and Japan, with an approximate market cap of around $4.5 trillion. Alongside this, in terms of the number of investors, Uttar Pradesh has now surpassed Gujarat."
According to data released by the National Stock Exchange (NSE), Maharashtra holds the highest number of investors in India, with over 148 million registered investors as of December 25. The state has witnessed a 16.9% increase in the number of investors over the past year. Following Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat secure their positions. Uttar Pradesh added 2.3 million new investors in the year 2023.
In the case of registering the highest number of new investors this year, Bihar maintained its lead, experiencing a 36.6% increase in registered investors. Subsequently, Chhattisgarh (35%), Uttar Pradesh (33.8%), and Madhya Pradesh (28.9%) followed suit.
There has been a significant surge in the number of new investors in the northeastern states as well. Mizoram recorded a 54.9% increase, Nagaland saw a 54% rise, and Tripura experienced a 41.3% surge in new investor registrations.
What's driving the surge in investor numbers?
As per statistics until December 25, there are over 849 million registered investors in the country, marking a 22.4% increase from the previous year. This surge can be attributed to the wider accessibility of online trading platforms outside metropolitan areas. The proliferation of finance and business-related information on social media platforms like YouTube and Instagram has fostered awareness and interest in investment within the stock market. The Nifty 50 index and Sensex soared to new heights today, opening at record highs in response to the US Federal Reserve's decision to maintain its current interest rates, signaling a dovish stance.
Beginning the day on a high note, the Nifty-50 index commenced trading at an unprecedented 21,110, a substantial leap from its previous close of 20,926. It swiftly surged to a fresh peak of 21,120 surpassing its prior high of 21,037
Similarly, the Sensex marked an impressive opening at 70,146, significantly higher than its previous close of 69,584. Scaling further heights, it reached a pinnacle of 70,306.
The Federal Reserve's decision to maintain interest rates within the range of 5.25-5.5% was accompanied by a noteworthy indication. They hinted at the possibility of three quarter-point cuts to their benchmark interest rate throughout the upcoming year. This dovish turn by the Fed triggered a surge in the Dow, closing above 37,000 for the first time. Simultaneously, the Nasdaq and the S&amp;P 500 attained their best closing levels in nearly two years.
The prospect of the interest rate hike cycle concluding and the anticipation of at least three rate cuts anticipated in 2024 have been identified as significant positives for the market's future outlook.

The stock market witnessed a sharp sell-off on Wednesday, as the Nifty and Sensex fell for the fifth straight session. This comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East and worries over escalation on the Israel-Hamas war front.&nbsp;
On Wednesday alone, investors witnessed a staggering loss of over ₹2 lakh crore. Over the past five trading sessions, the cumulative loss in investor wealth amounted to ₹14.5 lakh crore.
Nifty today closed at 19,122, down 160 points, while the Sensex ended the day at 64,049, down 523 points.&nbsp;
It was a day of red for the broader markets as well. The BSE small-cap index experienced a 0.77% decline, and the mid-cap index dropped by 0.52%.
On the sectoral front from IT, to financial services to realty, stocks ended in the red. The metal sector was the only one that showed some gains. Avinash Gorakshkar, Head of Research at Profitmart Securities, quoted by Mint, said &ldquo;Rising US Treasury yields are also putting pressure in global equity market and India's Dalal Street is not an exception to it."&nbsp; Another worry is the rising crude oil prices. Brent crude, rose by 0.30%, reaching $88.32 per barrel.

Indian equity markets tanked for the second straight day today. Benchmark Indices Sensex and Nifty fell over 1% due to heavy selling in banking and oil stocks in tandem with weak global trends ahead of the US Federal Reserve's interest rate decision.
BSE Sensex tumbled 796 points or 1.18% to settle at 66,800.84. During the day, it tanked as much as 868.7 points or 1.28% to 66,728.14. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty declined 231.90 points or 1.15% to end below the 20,000 mark at 19,901.40.&nbsp;

The Broader market also came under pressure as BSE midcap and smallcap indices turned red after a flat opening.&nbsp;
This fall wiped out more than ₹ 2.6 lakh crore of market capitalisation. Investors' wealth fell 3,20,51,859 at the time of market closing. The BSE m-cap was at Rs 323.01 lakh crore during the previous trading session.&nbsp;
19 BSE stocks in total hit 52-week low, while 198 stocks hit 52-week high at the time of closing. Out of the 3,803 stocks that were traded on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 2,207 stocks declined while 1,476 stocks rose.&nbsp;
Among the Sensex firms, HDFC Bank emerged as the biggest loser, falling 4%. JSW Steel, Reliance Industries, UltraTech Cement, Maruti, Tata Steel, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Bharti Airtel and Larsen &amp; Toubro were the other major laggards.
Power Grid, Asian Paints, Sun Pharma, Axis Bank, NTPC, ITC and Infosys were among the gainers.

Buying in market heavyweight stocks like Reliance Industries and HDFC Bank added to the positive momentum.
Extending the previous day's rally, the 30-share BSE Sensex surged 499.39 points or 0.79 per cent to settle at its life time closing high of 63,915.42 points. During the day, the index jumped 634.41 points or 1 per cent to hit its all-time intra-day peak of 64,050.44 points.
The NSE Nifty climbed 154.70 points or 0.82 per cent to end at a record high of 18,972.10 points. During the day, it zoomed 193.85 points or 1 per cent to reach its lifetime intra-day high of 19,011.25 points.
From the Sensex pack, Tata Motors, Sun Pharma, Titan, Larsen &amp; Toubro, IndusInd Bank, Reliance Industries, NTPC, UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Finance, Infosys, HDFC Bank and Maruti were among the major gainers.
Tech Mahindra, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finserv, HCL Technologies and Wipro were the laggards.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought equities worth Rs 2,024.05 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data.

Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty retreated from record levels and closed lower in a volatile trade on Thursday due to profit-taking in financials, IT and oil shares after a two-day rally and negative trends in the US and European markets.
The 30-share BSE Sensex fell by 284.26 points or 0.45 per cent to settle at 63,238.89. The BSE benchmark hit an intra-day all-time peak of 63,601.71 in initial deals. However, the benchmark index faced volatile trends and declined 322.52 points or 0.50 per cent to a low of 63,200.63 during the day.
The NSE Nifty closed lower by 85.60 points or 0.45 per cent to end at 18,771.25.
From the Sensex pack, Bajaj Finance, Tata Motors, Asian Paints, Power Grid, NTPC, Infosys, Nestle, Reliance Industries and UltraTech Cement were the biggest laggards.
Larsen &amp; Toubro, Tata Steel, HDFC, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra were among the major gainers.

Amid mixed global cues and ahead of monthly derivatives expiry, BSE benchmark sensex jumped &nbsp;346.37 points or 0.60 per cent to close the session at 57,960.09. Meanwhile, NSE&rsquo;s Nifty50 opened 129 points, or 0.76 per cent at 17,080.70.&nbsp;
Market started on a positive note and extended the gains as the day progressed. However, mid-session selling erased all the gains but final hour buying across the sectors help to end near the day's high.
After opening lower today, PSU Banks jumped, as the sector closed 3.08 per cent higher. It was followed by realty stocks at 2.59 per cent, and media and metal stocks at 2.56 per cent each. Meanwhile, auto stocks jumped 1.67 per cent today

KV Subramanian,&nbsp;CEA: We have done what needed to be done. Historically the 5th largest economy was always AA or AAA rated, now that India is the fifth largest economy it is a BBB rated. As a professor and a subject matter expert I can tell you that there is a conceptual flaw in the Ability to pay debt depends on aggregate GDP not on your GDP per capita. Historically GDP per capita was a good indicator for debt level evaluation but that was before the financial crisis. The rating agencies sticking to their conservative mindset have stuck to their flawed model and we have highlighted this to them. I have no doubt, that this is a clear case of thinking using a broken model.&nbsp;
Vikram&nbsp;Chandra, Editorji: Let us focus on other risks, with Covid risks receding is the global energy concerns the biggest risk you see right now?
KV Subramanian,&nbsp;CEA:&nbsp;While we are still not out of the pandemic , but from October onwards you will see a big ramp-up in the second doses. Two-dose protection has dramatically bought down severity of the disease. The likelihood of a devastating third wave is not very high but I am a consumer of this research so I will caution and say epidemiologists&nbsp;are the best to answer this.&nbsp;
Turning to global energy concerns. Unlike other countries , India has rightly focused on supply side concerns while everyone focused on demand side. We recognised early on that supply side issues in India are far harder to deal with and acted on it. Some of the power sector reforms, mining sector changes will help us enhance supply. What we are seeing is supply side friction across globally economies but India planned for it and recognised the supply side pressures early. But the next couple of months we will have to match supply and demand very carefully after which the measures we have taken will start to kick in. We need to calibrate the next few months very carefully.&nbsp;
Rajeev&nbsp;Dubey, Fortune India: When do you see private expenditure and consumption starting to kick off&nbsp;
Already seeing signs of private consumption starting to pick up. The Q1 consumption grew by 20% though on a low base but it happened despite significant supply side constraints , which show cases that demand is robust. Now in Q2 with the restrictions reduced you are seeing demand not just in the manufacturing sector but also the services sector which is showcased in the high frequency PMI data. On the expenditure side, investment levels in Q3 and Q4 were above 33% which is much above the average. The capex the govt has planned for this year is the highest so far and the run rate is confirming that we will meet the budget target for this year. Even anecdotal evidence supports this, have heard of corporates such as Vedanta, Hindalco announcing large capex plan. Corporate announcements of investment shows that the industry is also seeing the nuance interpretation of consumption picking up .&nbsp;
Vikram&nbsp;Chandra, Editorji: Lets talk a little bit more about the energy crisis from coal to oil and the impact it has having on consumers. What is the governments thought process right now on how to ease this pressure ?
KV Subramanian,&nbsp;CEA:&nbsp;This year and next year expect crude oil prices to remain high, given the OECD estimates it is clear that global demand will remain quiet high keeping prices high. Do not foresee oil prices easing over the next 18-24 months, see crude above the $70 mark sustaining. Price in petrol pumps is of concern because of overall inflation. Currently food inflation is the largest part of the basket and that is easing keeping the basket under check. The govt is talking about what can be done about high petrol prices. But do keep in mind that the capital expenditure has to come from revenues . And that capex expenditure though not as obvious as oil prices and it&rsquo;s direct impact also affect the common person. Capex spends have a much longer and salutory impact that one must keep in mind.
Rajeev&nbsp;Dubey, Fortune India: The budget exercise is about to kick off what is on top of you mind right now.&nbsp;
KV Subramanian,&nbsp;CEA: Laying out a path of fiscal consolidation while staying the course of capital expenditure that would be a very important point. Post global crisis, there has been a shift in India&rsquo;s economic thinking and response. India has focused much more on the multiplier and capex model versus the keynesian model of stimulus that the rest of the world is sticking with. India&rsquo;s innovative policy response shows courage of conviction as it shows much long lasting impact. Focusing on the same path of fiscal consolidation while maintaining capex remains critical. At the same time, we must continue the focus on enterprise policy focused on private industry. Right now the government owns 360 public sector undertaking Once the&nbsp;enterprise policy focused on private&nbsp;sector is taken to it&rsquo;s logical conclusion the Govt should be left with 3-4 PSUs in 3-4 sectors like banking, defence. To ensure this flow every year we will have to bring PSUs to the floor that we will need to privatise. Asset monetisation policy is another focus as it will raise the efficiency levels in the economy and bring idol assets back into economy.&nbsp;
Vikram&nbsp;Chandra, Editorji: Stock market are roaring to new highs, does that worry you or present opportunity to push out big ticket de-investments such as LIC?
KV Subramanian,&nbsp;CEA:&nbsp;It is a wonderful opportunity to do the divestment that is planned for this year. Financial markets near record high are assessing value of reforms undertaken. Financial experts don&rsquo;t just look at levels but also volatility to evaluate risk of bubbles. If you look at the volatility index it has been trending down, that has given comfort. For any asset market you can never speak with certainty but the likelihood of a bubble is very low.&nbsp;
Rajeev&nbsp;Dubey, Fortune India: The chatter about rollback of the pandemic liquidity or easy money from the system, what is your take on it.&nbsp;
KV Subramanian,&nbsp;CEA:&nbsp;There are two key aspects to look at here, the Fed has learnt lessons from the last taper in 2013 and is setting expectations very clearly. So unlike 2013 where the taper took a lot EMs by surprise, this time it is ensuring the communication is clear. Similarly even the RBI is doing the same, setting down expectation for the tapering of excess liquidity. We suffered during taper tantrum in 2013 because our key economic fundamentals (current a/c deficit, fiscal deficit, inflation) were quite fragile after the financial crisis. The same economic indicators have turned around due to strong supply side policies and has put us in a much more strong position vs peers and 2013. So even if the eventual taper has an impact it will be temporary and not long lasting.&nbsp;

 KV Subramanian,&nbsp;CEA: We have done what needed to be done. Historically the 5th largest economy was always AA or AAA rated, now that India is the fifth largest economy it is a BBB rated. As a professor and a subject matter expert I can tell you that there is a conceptual flaw in the Ability to pay debt depends on aggregate GDP not on your GDP per capita. Historically GDP per capita was a good indicator for debt level evaluation but that was before the financial crisis. The rating agencies sticking to their conservative mindset have stuck to their flawed model and we have highlighted this to them. I have no doubt, that this is a clear case of thinking using a broken model.&nbsp;
 Vikram&nbsp;Chandra, Editorji: Let us focus on other risks, with Covid risks receding is the global energy concerns the biggest risk you see right now?
 KV Subramanian,&nbsp;CEA:&nbsp;While we are still not out of the pandemic , but from October onwards you will see a big ramp-up in the second doses. Two-dose protection has dramatically bought down severity of the disease. The likelihood of a devastating third wave is not very high but I am a consumer of this research so I will caution and say epidemiologists&nbsp;are the best to answer this.&nbsp;
 Turning to global energy concerns. Unlike other countries , India has rightly focused on supply side concerns while everyone focused on demand side. We recognised early on that supply side issues in India are far harder to deal with and acted on it. Some of the power sector reforms, mining sector changes will help us enhance supply. What we are seeing is supply side friction across globally economies but India planned for it and recognised the supply side pressures early. But the next couple of months we will have to match supply and demand very carefully after which the measures we have taken will start to kick in. We need to calibrate the next few months very carefully.&nbsp;

 Already seeing signs of private consumption starting to pick up. The Q1 consumption grew by 20% though on a low base but it happened despite significant supply side constraints , which show cases that demand is robust. Now in Q2 with the restrictions reduced you are seeing demand not just in the manufacturing sector but also the services sector which is showcased in the high frequency PMI data. On the expenditure side, investment levels in Q3 and Q4 were above 33% which is much above the average. The capex the govt has planned for this year is the highest so far and the run rate is confirming that we will meet the budget target for this year. Even anecdotal evidence supports this, have heard of corporates such as Vedanta, Hindalco announcing large capex plan. Corporate announcements of investment shows that the industry is also seeing the nuance interpretation of consumption picking up .&nbsp;
 Vikram&nbsp;Chandra, Editorji: Lets talk a little bit more about the energy crisis from coal to oil and the impact it has having on consumers. What is the governments thought process right now on how to ease this pressure ?
 KV Subramanian,&nbsp;CEA:&nbsp;This year and next year expect crude oil prices to remain high, given the OECD estimates it is clear that global demand will remain quiet high keeping prices high. Do not foresee oil prices easing over the next 18-24 months, see crude above the $70 mark sustaining. Price in petrol pumps is of concern because of overall inflation. Currently food inflation is the largest part of the basket and that is easing keeping the basket under check. The govt is talking about what can be done about high petrol prices. But do keep in mind that the capital expenditure has to come from revenues . And that capex expenditure though not as obvious as oil prices and it&rsquo;s direct impact also affect the common person. Capex spends have a much longer and salutory impact that one must keep in mind.

 KV Subramanian,&nbsp;CEA: Laying out a path of fiscal consolidation while staying the course of capital expenditure that would be a very important point. Post global crisis, there has been a shift in India&rsquo;s economic thinking and response. India has focused much more on the multiplier and capex model versus the keynesian model of stimulus that the rest of the world is sticking with. India&rsquo;s innovative policy response shows courage of conviction as it shows much long lasting impact. Focusing on the same path of fiscal consolidation while maintaining capex remains critical. At the same time, we must continue the focus on enterprise policy focused on private industry. Right now the government owns 360 public sector undertaking Once the&nbsp;enterprise policy focused on private&nbsp;sector is taken to it&rsquo;s logical conclusion the Govt should be left with 3-4 PSUs in 3-4 sectors like banking, defence. To ensure this flow every year we will have to bring PSUs to the floor that we will need to privatise. Asset monetisation policy is another focus as it will raise the efficiency levels in the economy and bring idol assets back into economy.&nbsp;

 KV Subramanian,&nbsp;CEA:&nbsp;It is a wonderful opportunity to do the divestment that is planned for this year. Financial markets near record high are assessing value of reforms undertaken. Financial experts don&rsquo;t just look at levels but also volatility to evaluate risk of bubbles. If you look at the volatility index it has been trending down, that has given comfort. For any asset market you can never speak with certainty but the likelihood of a bubble is very low.&nbsp;

 KV Subramanian,&nbsp;CEA:&nbsp;There are two key aspects to look at here, the Fed has learnt lessons from the last taper in 2013 and is setting expectations very clearly. So unlike 2013 where the taper took a lot EMs by surprise, this time it is ensuring the communication is clear. Similarly even the RBI is doing the same, setting down expectation for the tapering of excess liquidity. We suffered during taper tantrum in 2013 because our key economic fundamentals (current a/c deficit, fiscal deficit, inflation) were quite fragile after the financial crisis. The same economic indicators have turned around due to strong supply side policies and has put us in a much more strong position vs peers and 2013. So even if the eventual taper has an impact it will be temporary and not long lasting.&nbsp;

In&nbsp;fact the National Stock Exchange had informed brokers in October that for two complete trading&nbsp;days ,&nbsp;September 28 &amp; 29 the bourse had operated entirely out of the disaster recovery site, notably without any issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ironically the next round of testing is due end of March.
SEBI has sought a complete report including the details of internal assessments which led to the 4-hour trading halt&nbsp;on Wednesday.&nbsp;SEBI however reassured investors that&nbsp;the market regulator&nbsp;would take&nbsp;all necessary measures to ensure rectification of the underlying causes&nbsp;including addressing institutional deficiencies&nbsp;

The broader markets were more active with the advances outpacing the declines holding the market breadth steady at 3:2.&nbsp;Smallcap and Midcap Indices&nbsp;rung in gains of 1% each.&nbsp;
Metal Index remained firmly higher through the day&nbsp; hitting the highest level since April 2018&nbsp;but the sheen was dragged down by financial stocks which continued their downturn.&nbsp;
Bulls will take solace from the fact that the markets have broken the 5 day losing streak.&nbsp;

Food Tech pioneer Zomato raised $250 million from five investors raising its value to $5.4 billion. This marks a steep rise for the online food delivery platform that was valued at $4 billion post fund raising in December.&nbsp;
The news was filed to exchanges by Info Edge who owns 18.4% in the unicorn. Existing investors Kora Management has led the round with $115 million in capital. This round also saw the entry of Dragoneer Investment Group which has also recently invested in edtech start up Unacademy.
