Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) &nbsp;supremo Mayawati reacted to the killing of BSP Tamil Nadu president K Armstrong. &nbsp;Mayawati said the state government "must punish the guilty".
 The BSP leader was attacked by bike-borne gang near his house in Perambur on Friday and inflicted grave injuries on him. Armstrong dies on the way to hospital. Hindustan Times quoting police sources said a manhunt has been launched to nab the suspects. Chennai police have formed 10 special teams to probe the murder.
Taking it to the X Mayawati wrote "The gruesome killing of Mr. K. Armstrong, Tamil Nadu state Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president, outside his Chennai house is highly deplorable and condemnable. An advocate by profession, he was known as a strong Dalit voice in the state. The state Govt. must punish the guilty.&rdquo;
The Chennai police in a statement said that Armstrong was standing in front of his house at Venugopal Samy Kovil Street, Perambur (K-1 Sembium PS limits), when he was attacked by unknown persons with knives. The police with the help of a passersby took him to the hospital where the doctors declared him dead.&nbsp;
 Opposition AIADMK leader K Palaniswami condemned Armstrong's killing and slammed the ruling DMK government. Palaniswami said if a leader like a BSP's state president is assassinated then what is the point of criticising the law and order in the state.
Armstrong advocated for the rights of Dalits and the underprivileged in Tamil Nadu. Even though the BSP doesn't have any political presence in Tamil Nadu, Armstrong was a known Dalit voice in the state.&nbsp;

BSP chief Mayawati has reinstated her nephew, Akash Anand, as her successor and the party&rsquo;s national coordinator on Sunday. This decision follows the party's failure to secure any seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections. The announcement was made during a meeting in Lucknow, aimed at reviewing the party's poor performance.
All national office-bearers and state leaders attended the meeting, where BSP's national general secretary Mevalal Gautam confirmed the decision. Previously, Mayawati had removed Akash from his roles, stating he needed to attain maturity. His removal came after the Sitapur police booked him for promoting hatred and enmity during an election rally.
The BSP contested 424 seats in the Lok Sabha elections but did not win any. Some candidates believe Akash's removal from the campaign impacted the party's performance, particularly among young voters. Akash, who was initially announced as Mayawati's successor in December, had played an active role in the party's campaigns, including the 2023 Rajasthan state Assembly elections.
Akash, who began his political career in 2017 at age 22, holds an MBA from London and first appeared with Mayawati at a rally in Saharanpur.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Tuesday removed her nephew Akash Anand from the party&rsquo;s national coordinator post.

In a post on X, Mayawati wrote, &ldquo;Along with promoting other people in the party, I named Akash Anand as the National Coordinator and my successor, but in the larger interest of the party and the movement, he is being removed from both these important responsibilities until he attains full maturity.&rdquo;
Akash had been named Mayawati&rsquo;s political successor in December 2023.
&ldquo;BSP leadership will not shy away from making every sacrifice in the interest of the party and in taking forward the teachings of Dr. Ambedkar,&rdquo; she added.

BSP chief Mayawati on Tuesday promised to work for a separate state comprising districts of western Uttar Pradesh and fulfil the "longstanding demand" of setting up a bench of the Allahabad High Court in Meerut, if voted to power at the Centre.
Addressing an election rally in support of her party nominee from the Meerut Lok Sabha seat, the BSP chief attacked the Congress and BJP and also targeted the Samajwadi Party (SP) on the issue of reservation, alleging the SP does not want the people belonging to SC/ST communities to get quota benefits.
She also said that her party, if voted to power, will work to fulfil the demands and address problems of the region. "We will take positive steps with regards to your longstanding demand of a Allahabad High Court bench here in Meerut like that in Lucknow," she said.
"The central government has not been paying attention to it but when we come to power at the Centre, we will take positive steps in this regard," Mayawati said.
Referring to how her government in Uttar Pradesh had passed a resolution for a separate state, which was sent to the Centre, she said, "Since the beginning, our party has been of the view that the western region should be made a separate state for better development of the region.
"We had got a resolution passed by the state assembly and sent to the central government but they did not act on it. When our party comes to power at the Centre, your western UP will be made a separate state," she said.
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister alleged that the quota facility meant for the Dalits, adivasis (STs) and OBCs in government jobs has not been filled up in the country for years and the quota in promotions for the SCs/STs has also been made ineffective.
"I want to remind the members of the SCs/STs that when the SP was in power in Uttar Pradesh, it had ended reservation in promotions. Will the members of these sections give even a single vote to them and waste it on a party which is bent upon finishing their reservation. The SP does not want SC/ST people to get full benefits of reservation," she said.
She also alleged that when an amendment bill for reservation in promotions was presented in the Rajya Sabha, the SP MPs had torn it. "Will such Samajwadi Party do good for the Dalits and shoshits (exploited class)? "Not only this, the districts, parks, universities that we (BSP government) had made in the name of great men belonging to these sections of society were mostly changed by the subsequent Samajwadi Party government," she said.
She also alleged that like the Congress, the BJP's casteist and pro-capitalist thinking and policies have not helped in ensuring the real development and uplift of the poor, Dalits, adivasis, backwards, Muslims and other religious minorities among the "sarv samaj".
Telling her voters that in these Lok Sabha elections, the Congress, BJP and their supporting parties have to be stopped from coming to power, she alleged their wrong policies and working style has been tried by all.
She also warned against the "saam, daam, dand, bhed" policies allegedly being adopted by these parties to attain power.
Seeking vote for her party nominee from Meerut, Mayawati said unlike the past elections when her party had fielded Muslim candidates, it has this time given ticket to Devvrat Tyagi.
In Meerut, the BJP has fielded Arun Govil. Samajwadi Party's Sunita Verma and BSP's Devvrat Kumar Tyagi are the other prominent candidates in the fray.
The BSP chief, who reached Aligarh several hours late due to bad weather, said that voters from the Aligarh Lok Sabha seat had many times made BJP's Brahmin community candidate successful, but the public was not satisfied with his working style.
She said that had the public not got an alternative, they would have let him (BJP MP from Aligarh, Satish Gautam) win out of "compulsion", but by giving a candidate from the Brahmin community, "we have given an alternative to them, who stands with the public during their happiness and sorrows." Regarding Aligarh's BSP candidate Hitendra Upadhyay, she said that not only Brahmins, but people from all sections of society and the Muslim community also came to Lucknow and recommended his name for the party's ticket.
In the Aligarh meeting itself, she also appealed for the victory of Hathras (SC) Lok Sabha seat candidate Hem Babu of the Dhangar community.
Also, explaining the reason for fielding a Jat candidate from Mathura, Mayawati said the people of the constituency wanted that an educated local person should be their candidate, and not an outsider, "so we have made Suresh Singh the candidate from Mathura."
In Aligarh, there are 14 candidates in the fray, including BJP's Satish Kumar Gautam, SP's Bijendra Singh and Hitendra Kumar Upadhyay of the BSP.
Voting in the second phase will take place on April 26 and it will cover eight parliamentary constituencies of Amroha, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Gautambuddh Nagar, Bulandshahr (SC), Aligarh and Mathura. Counting of votes will be held on June 4.&nbsp;

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Sunday said her party will take "concrete steps" to make western Uttar Pradesh a separate state if voted to power at the Centre.
Launching her party's poll campaign in western Uttar Pradesh, the BSP chief also asked the Muslim community not to split their votes. "If the Muslim community splits its votes, and votes for the Congress, then the BJP will get the benefit," she said at a rally in Saharanpur.
Addressing another rally in Muzaffarnagar, where she campaigned for party candidate Dara Singh Prajapati, she referred to the long-standing demand for statehood for western Uttar Pradesh.
"There has been a long-standing demand for statehood by the people of western Uttar Pradesh. For this, concrete steps will be taken if our government comes to power at the Centre," Mayawati told the gathering. The BSP is fighting this Lok Sabha election alone and is not part of the opposition INDIA bloc.
Twenty-five years ago, Uttarakhand was carved out of Uttar Pradesh as a separate state.
The BSP chief also claimed that if free and fair elections are held and voting machines are not tampered with, the BJP will not return to power this time.
"Most of the BJP's time was spent on making wealthy businessmen wealthier and protecting them... The BJP and other parties run their organisations and contest elections with the support of these businesses. Electoral bond data revealed this," she added.
At the Saharanpur rally earlier in the day, Mayawati asked Muslims not to split their votes. "To the Muslims, I would like to say that you should not allow your votes to be split. If you want to defeat the BJP candidate, I would ask the Muslim community not to allow your votes to get split," she said.
Sharpening her attack on the Congress, the BSP chief said, "Whenever the BSP has fielded a Muslim candidate, the Congress and other parties have also given tickets to Muslim candidates." "The Congress knows that its candidate will not win the polls. The BSP has a huge chunk of Dalit votes along with Muslims. From the Kairana Lok Sabha seat, we have given the ticket to a 'Kshatriya'. Our candidate will get the 'Kshatriya' votes in Saharanpur as well," she added.
She further claimed that it would not be easy for the BJP to return to power because of the difference in its words and actions.
"The BJP and its allies have been in power at the Centre and in most states. Owing to their casteist, capitalist, narrow and vindictive policies and style of working, and due to the significant difference in their words and actions, it now seems that it would not be easy for them to return to power at the Centre," the BSP chief said.
People are not going to fall for the "rhetoric" served by the political parties ahead of the polls anymore, she said and accused the BJP of "politicising" probe agencies.
She said her party is contesting the Lok Sabha election on its own instead of forging an alliance with any party and has given "appropriate share to all sections of society" in ticket distribution.
Mayawati also hit out at rival political parties, saying their wrong policies have adversely impacted the economy. Apart from this, the country's borders are not completely safe, she claimed.
Asking the voters to remain alert, Mayawati said other political parties use the media, opinion polls and surveys to create a favourable atmosphere.
"The BSP does not release its manifesto. Our party believes in speaking less and working more. Our government in Uttar Pradesh did historic work which is now being copied by governments of most parties," she said.
Hitting out at the free ration scheme Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, Mayawati said, "Food materials given to extremely poor families is not going to benefit them. This problem can be addressed by giving them work and our party will pay attention to this." Earlier in the day, Mayawati accused other mainstream parties of giving an "ostensible" respect to Dr BR Ambedkar and ignoring his followers.
"For narrow electoral interests, the ostensible respect given to Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, and ignoring his followers, exemplifies the proverb 'mooh mein ram, bagal mein chhuri',&rdquo; she said in a statement.
In a post in Hindi on X, Mayawati paid tributes to Ambedkar on his birth anniversary and called him "a messiah of millions of poor, exploited, deprived and neglected people in the country".
Eight parliamentary constituencies of Saharanpur, Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Nagina (SC), Moradabad, Rampur, and Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh will vote in the first phase of Lok Sabha polls on April 19.
The counting of votes will be held on June 4.&nbsp;

The Congress has invited several leaders of non-BJP parties, including Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, BSP supremo Mayawati and RLD's Jayant Chaudhary, to take part in the Uttar Pradesh leg of the Bharat Jodo Yatra.&nbsp;
An exception is former deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma who has been invited to the yatra in his capacity as a professor of Lucknow University.&nbsp;

The National Commission for Women (NCW) had on Friday formed a two-member fact-finding team to look into allegations.
Meanwhile, amid the shocking reports NCW has also written to the Rajasthan chief secretary and demanded urgent action and asked to apprise the commission of the action taken.

They together worked in the Samajwadi Party under their now ailing leader Mulayam Singh Yadav who now remains in political oblivion. &nbsp; &nbsp; This isn&rsquo;t a perfect picture. A perfect picture would have been Mulyama Singh&rsquo;s son and incumbent Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh&nbsp;Yadav greeting Khan at the gates of the jail. Not to be. In that rally&nbsp;Mayawati&nbsp;reserved her sharpest attacks on Congress and the SP, while appearing to be soft on the BJP. The BSP appeared again for a second rally on Feb 16 in Lucknow.
In recent times,&nbsp;Mayawati&rsquo;s preoccupation has been to hand over her legacy and her party to Akash Anand, her young London-returned nephew who was anointed as the &ldquo;heir&rdquo;, and her brother, Anand Kumar, who was re-appointed as the BSP&rsquo;s national vice-president.

Amid the campaign heat in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, a rare verbal duel between incumbent and former chief minister ministers has got the attention of election-watchers.Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and BSP chief Mayawati locked horns on Twitter, with the bitter exchange bordering on personal attacks.Mayawati, in her bid to reach out to the voters in Western Uttar Pradesh, wrote on twitter that probably the public does not know that the monastery built by Yogi in Gorakhpur, where he resides most of the time, is no less than a big bungalow. She went on to say it would have been better if the CM, in his political campaigning, had mentioned the contribution of the BSP-led government in providing housing for the poor and landless.Her attack earned a sharp rebuke from the BJP leader, with messages targeting Mayawati posted on the chief minister's official twitter handle.
