Three menstruating women of the Golla community were locked by villagers in Karnataka's Tumakuru.

Three menstruating women belonging to the Golla community were locked in a room outside a village in Karnataka's Tumakuru district on September 16.
They included an Anganwadi worker, Sujatha, a midday meal cook Savitramma, and another woman. They were isolated by the community as they were menstruating.
According to officials, the Golla community in Tumakuru still isolates women during menstruation. The practice continues despite awareness programmes and campaigns being conducted.
Acting on a tip-off, district officials raided the village and released the three.
&ldquo;The district administration took the issue seriously and instructed all tahsildars to visit Kadu Golla colonies. Surprise visits will be done to check this practice,&rdquo; Gubbi taluk magistrate and tahsildar B Arathi said, as per Hindustan Times. She said that in many colonies with educated women, such discrimination does not take place.&nbsp;
&ldquo;However, in a few colonies, this practice still exists. We will take stern action against such practice. We are organising awareness campaigns and meetings regularly to eradicate this,&rdquo; she added.
The community believes that menstruating women and pregnant women are 'sutak' (inauspicious) and keeps them away from the village.

As per a new report, disposable sanitary pads generate about 14 kg of non-biodegradable waste in a lifetime by a woman while the number stands at 0.06 kg for menstrual cups.&nbsp;
Conducted by NGO ARTH (Action Research and Training for Health), the report &lsquo;Why India Needs to Move Beyond Sanitary Pads&rsquo; revealed that total non-biodegradable waste generated from menstrual products can be reduced by 99 per cent if one uses menstrual cups.
According to the Executive director of the NGO, Poonam Muttreja, menstrual cups are not only practical, hygienic, and cost-effective but offer a longer duration of menstrual hygiene. Women should be aware of them and myths around their use need to be busted.&nbsp;

Severe and painful menstrual cramps affect&nbsp;around 16-91 per cent of girls and women of reproductive age, out of which&nbsp;up to 29 per cent of them have had such bad symptoms that they've been unable to carry out daily activities.&nbsp;&nbsp;
This condition is called dysmenorrhea and for the first time, researchers have proven that long-term air pollution exposure significantly increases your chances of facing painful periods.&nbsp;

The team from Taiwan looked at data on air quality and public health databases over a period of&nbsp;13 years. They discovered that&nbsp;the risk to develop dysmenorrhea&nbsp;was up to 33 times higher amongst Taiwanese women and girls who lived in places with high levels of air pollutants like&nbsp;nitrogen, carbon oxides and fine particulate matter.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Ringing a similar note, a 2018&nbsp;study&nbsp;had found that&nbsp;teen girls were more likely to experience menstrual irregularity if exposed to air pollution&nbsp;and another in 2017 linked pollution exposure with longer menstrual cycles.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Published&nbsp;in <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2021-07/f-sif070621.php">Frontiers in Public Health</a>, the&nbsp;latest&nbsp;study notes&nbsp;that&nbsp;dysmenorrhea can be caused by hormonal imbalances or due to underlying gynaecological conditions such as endometriosis&nbsp;or&nbsp;tumours&nbsp;and the symptoms are often life-long. They may include&nbsp;cramping or pain in the lower abdomen, lower back and leg&nbsp;pain, nausea and vomiting,&nbsp;diarrhoea, fainting, fatigue and headaches.&nbsp;
There is no cure for the condition and previous research has linked lifestyle habits like smoking, alcohol consumption or obesity with a higher&nbsp;risk of&nbsp;it.&nbsp;But the new study&nbsp;demonstrates&nbsp;the major impact of the quality of air on human health, which now includes menstruation cycles.

Avoiding Sour Food and Drinks
In some parts of India, some strict dietary restrictions are followed during menstruation which perpetuates&nbsp;the idea that sour food like curd, tamarind and pickles should be avoided by menstruating people. It is believed that such foods will disturb or stop the menstrual flow. However, there is no scientific proof to support this argument, so go ahead and eat whatever you fancy during that time of the month!
Not Allowed to Enter Temples
Menstruating people are subject to certain religious restrictions during this time. Not being allowed to enter&nbsp;the Puja room or visit the Temple are some of the&nbsp;major restrictions enforced. They&nbsp;are also restricted from offering prayers and touching holy books. The basis for this myth is founded on the cultural belief that menstruating people are not 'pure.' Unfortunately&nbsp;this is still practised&nbsp;in different parts of the world, ranging from Bali to India to even Nepal. So we must constantly make an effort to do away this silly myth!

The Cochin University of Science and Technology has taken the decision following requests from student bodies in the varsity.&nbsp;

Now, girl students of a university in Kerala can avail "menstruation benefit" in the form of additional condonation of shortage of attendance.
Considering the long-pending demand of the students, the well-known Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has sanctioned an additional 2 per cent of condonation of shortage of attendance to female students, in each semester.
An autonomous university, CUSAT has over 8000 students in various streams and more than half of them are girls.
"Having considered the requests for menstruation benefits to female students, the Vice-Chancellor has ordered to sanction an additional 2% of condonation of shortage of attendance to female students, in each semester, subject to reporting to the Academic Council," a recent order issued by the joint registrar said.
According to university sources, various students' unions had been pressing for the menstruation benefit for female students for some time now.
A CUSAT official said the condonation would be different for each student as it would depend on her attendance.
"It will be different for each student. Each female student can claim two percent of their total attendance as menstrual benefit. That's why the exact number of leave is not mentioned in the order," the official told PTI.

The order would be applicable to female students of all streams including those pursuing PhD in the university and is expected to be implemented with immediate effect, the official added.

Months after people began sharing their stories online of experiencing abnormal menstruation following a COVID-19 vaccination, clinical research into a potential link is all set to begin.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has given $1.67 million to five institutions to explore potential links between the Covid-19 vaccination and menstrual changes. This comes after more than 30,000 women in the UK reported irregular, missed or heavier periods after taking the coronavirus vaccine.
