At least nine people, including a child, died after strong wind gusts caused a stage in northern Mexico to collapse during a campaign rally on Wednesday, authorities said.
At least 50 other people were injured in the accident, some seriously, according to Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia.
Local media footage of the accident showed a chaotic scene as the crowd fled the toppling stage while the lights and a giant screen crashed into the area where longshot presidential candidate Jorge Alvarez Maynez and members of his Citizens' Movement party were standing.
"I regret to report that so far the number of people killed in the accident stands at eight adults and one minor," Governor Garcia wrote on social media platform X.
Speaking to the press from the scene of the accident in the town of San Pedro Garza Garcia, he described it as "a tragedy."
Maynez, who escaped without serious injury, said the stage collapsed due to a strong gust of wind.
"I am fine and in communication with the authorities" over what happened, the 38-year-old wrote on X, adding that the priority was to take care of the victims.

The event was a closing campaign rally for the Citizens' Movement candidate for mayor of San Pedro Garza Garcia, Lorenia Canavati.

Some members of his team were being treated at the hospital, he said, without specifying their injuries.

Jose Juan, who was at the rally, recounted how the structure came crashing down on the candidates and their supporters.
"It hit me on the head and I fainted. The rest was pure hysteria, pure panic," he told broadcaster Televisa.
Mexico&rsquo;s meteorological service had earlier warned of heavy rain, wind gusts of up to 70 kilometers (43 miles) per hour and possible tornadoes in Nuevo Leon and other northern states.
Governor Garcia called on people to avoid going outside because of the storms.
In a post on social media, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador offered his sympathies to the family members and friends of the victims.
The other two presidential candidates also expressed solidarity with those affected.
Frontrunner Claudia Sheinbaum said that she was canceling a rally planned for Thursday in Monterrey, expressing "solidarity with the family and friends of the victims."
Main opposition presidential candidate Xochitl Galvez offered "condolences and prayers" to the families of those killed and "wishes for a speedy recovery to all the injured."
On June 2, Mexicans will vote for a new president as well as members of Congress, several state governors and local officials.
According to the polls, Maynez lags behind both Sheinbaum and Galvez, trailing at a distant third ahead of the vote. A mob in the Mexican tourist city of Taxco brutally beat a woman to death Thursday because she was suspected of kidnapping and killing a young girl, rampaging just hours before the city&rsquo;s famous Holy Week procession.
The mob formed after an 8-year-old girl disappeared Wednesday. Her body was found on a road on the outskirts of the city early Thursday. Security camera footage appeared to show a woman and a man loading a bundle, which may have been the girl&rsquo;s body, into a taxi.
The mob surrounded the woman&rsquo;s house Thursday, threatening to drag her out. Police took the woman into the bed of a police pickup truck, but then stood by &mdash; apparently intimidated by the crowd &mdash; as members of the mob dragged her out of the truck and down onto the street where they stomped, kicked and pummeled her until she lay, partly stripped and motionless.
Police then picked her up and took her away, leaving the pavement stained with blood. The Guerrero state prosecutors&rsquo; office later confirmed the woman died of her injuries.
&ldquo;This is the result of the bad government we have,&rdquo; said a member of the mob, who gave her name as Andrea but refused to give her last name. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t the first time this kind of thing has happened,&rdquo; she said, referring to the murder of the girl, &ldquo;but this is the first time the people have done something.&rdquo;
&ldquo;We are fed up,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;This time it was an 8-year-old girl.&rdquo;
The mayor of Taxco, Mario Figueroa, said he shared residents&rsquo; outrage over the killing. Figueroa said a total of three people beaten by the mob &mdash; the woman and two men &mdash; had been taken away by police. Video from the scene suggested they had also been beaten, though The Associated Press witnessed only the beating of the woman.
The state prosecutors&rsquo; office said the two men were hospitalized. There was no immediate information on their condition.
In a statement issued soon after the event, Figueroa complained he did not get any help from the state government for his small, outnumbered municipal police force.
&ldquo;Unfortunately, up to now we have not received any help or answers,&rdquo; Figueroa said.
The Good Friday eve religious procession, which dates back centuries in the old silver-mining town, went off as planned Thursday night.
People crowded Taxco&rsquo;s colonial streets to watch hooded men walking while whipping themselves or carrying heavy bundles of thorns across their bare shoulders in penitence to emulate the suffering of Jesus Christ carrying the cross.
But the earlier flash of violence cast a pall over the already solemn procession, which draws thousands to the small town.
Many participants wore small white ribbons of mourning.
&ldquo;I never thought that in a touristic place like Taxco we would experience a lynching,&rdquo; said Felipa Lagunas, a local elementary school teacher. &ldquo;I saw it as something distant, in places far from civilization ... I never imagined that my community would experience this on such a special day.&rdquo;

At least 11 people were killed and six more injured at a nightclub on Mexico's northern border early on Saturday after a man who had been removed from the venue for disturbing some women returned to set the place on fire, authorities reported.
The incident took place in the city of San Luis R&iacute;o Colorado, on the border with Arizona, Sonora prosecutor Gustavo R&oacute;mulo Salas said.
Although his department initially indicated that the fire had been caused by a petrol bomb and had put the number of injured at four, Salas later updated the figures at a news conference.
He said investigators believed the attacker went to his truck after being removed from the nightclub, extracted fuel from it, sprayed the door of the establishment and started the fire.
Ten people died on the spot and another in hospital.
Of the six injured, one was hospitalized in Sonora on Saturday afternoon, three had crossed into the United States to be treated there and the rest were discharged, the prosecutor said.
Officials said the deceased were seven men and four women, including some members of the group that played at the venue.
Among the dead was a woman with United States nationality and, most likely, dual nationality, and a minor under the age of 17 who was months away from turning 18.
The alleged attacker was detained at a military checkpoint.

While having a beer with a friend, Ruiz, an Indigenous Mixteca woman and a single mother from the state of Oaxaca, met a man she had seen around the neighbourhood. After hanging out, he offered to walk her home and later asked to stay the night because it was late and he was far from home.
Ruiz agreed to let him sleep on a mattress on the floor. But while she slept he climbed onto her bed, hit her, tore off her clothes and raped her, according to Ruiz's legal defence.
Ruiz fought back, hitting him in the nose. He threatened to kill her, and in the struggle to free herself, she killed him in self-defence.
In a panic, Ruiz put the man's body in a bag and dragged it out to the street where passing police arrested her.
Despite telling police she had been raped, Carrera said a forensic exam was never taken, a crucial step in prosecuting sexual violence cases. Instead, an officer responded that she probably wanted to have sex with the man at first and then changed her mind, he said.
&ldquo;I regret what I did, but if I hadn't done it I would be dead today,&rdquo; Ruiz told the AP in an interview last year, adding, &ldquo;It's evident that the state wants to shut us up, wants us to be submissive, wants us closed up inside, wants us dead.&rdquo; Women's rights groups have repeatedly accused Mexican authorities of re-victimising survivors and failing to judge cases with a gender perspective.

Nearly half of Mexican women have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime, government data shows.
In 2022, the Mexican government registered a total of 3,754 women &ndash; an average of 10 a day &ndash; who were intentionally killed, a significant jump from the year before. Only a third were investigated as femicides.
That number is likely just a fraction of the real number due to rising disappearances and a lack of reporting of violence in the country.
Angelica Ospina, a gender fellow for the International Crisis Group in Mexico, said she worries that the sentencing may empower victimisers while discouraging women from reporting gender-based violence or defending themselves.
The case points to just how &ldquo;normalized&rdquo; gender-based violence is in Mexico and other parts of Latin America, Ospina said.
&ldquo;When a woman defends herself, the system is particularly efficient in processing and sentencing her without taking into consideration the conditions in which she killed the man,&rdquo; Ospina said.
Meanwhile, outside the courtroom, women carried signs and chanted &ldquo;justice!&rdquo; A tearful Ruiz stood before the crowd, thanking feminist groups and the women who had supported her through the years-long judicial process.
Speaking to the crowd, she thought of her 4-year-old son.
&ldquo;My son, I hope to see him again. I hope to stay with him, to be the one who watches him grow up,&rdquo; Ruiz said.&nbsp;

Mexican drug cartels produce the opioid from precursor chemicals shipped from China, and then press it into pills counterfeited to look like Xanax, Percocet or Oxycodone. People often take the pills without knowing they contain fentanyl and can suffer deadly overdoses.
The bust came on the same day that the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a hearing on the huge number of U.S. fentanyl overdoses that occur annually, currently around 70,000.
The committee's chair, Sen. Bob Menendez , a Democrat from New Jersey, called on Mexico to do more.
&ldquo;This means asking Mexico to do more to disrupt the criminal organisations from producing and trafficking fentanyl, although a politicised judiciary and incidents of Mexican security forces colluding with drug cartels will make that difficult,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;

Amid criticism of Joe Biden-led Democratic government's handling of the migrant crisis, the US President visited an entry point at US-Mexico border on Sunday. This was Biden's first visit to the border since he took over as the President two years ago.

Joe Biden will be making his first trip to Mexico as US President on Monday for a North American leaders' summit. It will be the first time since 2014 that Mexico has hosted a US president.

US President Joe Biden will seek Mexico's help tackling illegal flows of migrants and drugs, particularly deadly opioids, during a visit beginning Sunday for a North American leaders' summit.
Aiming to tame criticism over what he has called a "broken" immigration system, Biden will stop off in Texas for his first trip to a border overwhelmed by record numbers of migrants and asylum-seekers.
The issue is almost certain to top the agenda when Biden meets Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Monday, a day before Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joins them for the so-called "Three Amigos" summit.
Another priority for Biden is stepping up joint efforts to fight trafficking of fentanyl and other drugs behind an addiction crisis in the United States.

"Mexico is extremely relevant and important in dealing with both acute issues, which have become political vulnerabilities for Biden," Michael Shifter, a senior fellow at the Inter-American Dialogue think tank, told AFP.
On Thursday, Washington announced that up to 30,000 qualifying migrants a month would be allowed into the United States from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela if they arrive by plane.
The quota will be restricted to those who already have a US sponsor, while those attempting to cross the border illegally will be expelled in coordination with Mexico.

The operation to detain Ovidio Guzm&aacute;n, the son of imprisoned drug lord Joaquin &ldquo;El Chapo&rdquo; Guzman, unleashed firefights that turned the northern city of Culiac&aacute;n into a war zone, authorities said Friday.&nbsp;
In a blow-by-blow description of the battles that killed 10 military personnel and 19 suspected members of the Sinaloa drug cartel, Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval said cartel gunmen opened fire on troops with .50-caliber machine guns.
The army responded by calling in Blackhawk helicopter gunships to attack a convoy of 25 cartel vehicles, including truck-mounted cartel gun platforms, on Thursday.
The cartel then opened fire on the military aircraft, forcing two of them down with &ldquo;a significant number of impacts&rdquo; in each of the two aircraft, Sandoval said.
The gang then sent hordes of gunmen to attack fixed-wing aircraft, both military and civilian, at the city&rsquo;s international airport.
One civilian airliner was hit.
The gunmen also shot up airport buildings in a bid to prevent authorities from flying the captured cartel boss out of the city.
But, Sandoval said, authorities anticipating the resistance had loaded Ovidio Guzman onto a military helicopter to fly him back to Mexico City.
The Mexican administration bagged the high-profile cartel figure just days before hosting U.S. President Joe Biden.

Mexican security forces captured Ovidio Guzm&aacute;n, an alleged drug trafficker wanted by the United States and one of the sons of former Sinaloa cartel boss Joaqu&iacute;n &ldquo;El Chapo&rdquo; Guzm&aacute;n, in a pre-dawn operation Thursday that set off gunfights and roadblocks across the western state's capital.

Thursday's high-profile capture comes just days before L&oacute;pez Obrador will host US President Joe Biden for bilateral talks followed by their North American Leaders' Summit with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Drug trafficking, along with immigration, is expected to be a top talking point.
&ldquo;This is a significant blow to the Sinaloa cartel and major victory for the rule of law. It will not, however, impede the flow of drugs into the U.S. Hopefully, Mexico will extradite him to the U.S.,&rdquo; Mike Vigil, the DEA's former Chief of International Operations, said Thursday.
Vigil said that Ovidio Guzm&aacute;n was involved in all of the cartel's activities, especially the production of fentanyl. A 2018 federal indictment in Washington, D.C., accused the younger Guzm&aacute;n of conspiring to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana in the United States.
The CDC said last July that more than 107,000 Americans had died from a drug overdose during the year ending January 2022, most of them involving opioids including illegally made fentanyl.
L&oacute;pez Obrador's security approach reversed years of what came to be known as the kingpin strategy of taking down cartel leaders, which led to the fragmentation of large cartels and bloody battles for dominance. L&oacute;pez Obrador put all his faith in the military, disbanding the corrupt Federal Police and creating the National Guard under military command.
The capture was the result of six months of reconnaissance and surveillance in the cartel's territory, and then quick action on Thursday, Sandoval said. National Guard troops spotted SUVs, some with homemade armor, and immediately coordinated with the army as they established a perimeter around the suspicious vehicles and forced the occupants out to be searched.
The security forces then came under fire, but were able to gain control of the situation and identify Guzm&aacute;n among those present and in possession of firearms, Sandoval said.
Cartel members set up 19 roadblocks including at Culiacan's airport and outside the local army base, as well as all points of access to the city of Culiacan, Sandoval said, but the Air Force was able to fly Guzm&aacute;n to Mexico City despite their efforts, and he was taken to offices of the Attorney General's organized crime special prosecutor.
Sandoval said Guzm&aacute;n was a leader of a Sinaloa faction he called &ldquo;los menores&rdquo; or &ldquo;the juniors,&rdquo; who are also known as &ldquo;los Chapitos,&rdquo; for the sons of El Chapo.
Other &ldquo;little Chapos&rdquo; include two of his brothers &mdash; Iv&aacute;n Archivaldo Guzm&aacute;n and Jes&uacute;s Alfredo Guzm&aacute;n &mdash; who are believed to have been running cartel operations together with Ismael &ldquo;El Mayo&rdquo; Zambada.
The Chapitos have been taking greater control in the cartel because Zambada was in poor health and isolated in the mountains, Vigil said. &ldquo;The Chapitos know that if el Mayo dies, (the cartel) is going to break apart if they don't have control.&rdquo; &ldquo;It's going to be very important that the U.S. requests Ovidio's extradition quickly and that Mexico does it,&rdquo; Vigil said.
U.S. Homeland Security Investigations had posted a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of Guzm&aacute;n early last year.
Alleged cartel members responded to Thursday's operation by carjacking Culiacan residents and setting vehicles ablaze in the cartel stronghold. Local and state authorities warned everyone to stay inside.
Intermittent gunfire continued into the afternoon Thursday in Culiacan as Mexican security forces continued to clash with cartel gunmen and few people ventured out. Airports there and in several other Sinaloa cities remained closed.
Airline Aeromexico said in a statement that one of its jets was struck by a bullet Thursday morning as it prepared for takeoff. Passenger video posted online showed people cowering on the floor of the plane. The company said passengers and crew were safe.
Later, Mexico's Civil Aviation Agency said in a statement that an air force plane in Culiacan had also been hit with gunfire. In addition to the Culiacan airport, the agency said airports in Los Mochis and Mazatlan were also ordered closed and all flights cancelled for security reasons.
David T&eacute;llez was aboard that flight with his wife and children, preparing to return to Mexico City after visiting his in-laws.
Their plane had been waiting for its chance to take off as two large military planes carrying personnel landed as well as three or four military helicopters. Marines and soldiers deployed along the perimeter of the runway.
When the commercial flight was finally preparing to accelerate, T&eacute;llez heard gunshots in the distance. Within 15 seconds the sounds were suddenly more intense. &ldquo;We heard gunshots and threw ourselves to the floor,&rdquo; he said.
He did not know the plane had been hit until a flight attendant told them. The plane quickly returned to the terminal and they were hustled into a room. Late Thursday afternoon they were still in the airport, unsure of when they would be able to return to Mexico City.
Elsewhere in Culiacan, local reporter Marcos Vizcarra had sought shelter in a hotel after gunmen stole his car.
Then he explained via Twitter that armed men had entered the hotel where he had sought shelter &ldquo;and are threatening guests to give them their car keys.&rdquo; Later, Vizcarra reported that they had taken his phone, but he had made it home safely.
Such attempts to create chaos often come in response to arrests of important cartel figures in Mexico. One of the most notorious came when federal security forces cornered Ovidio Guzm&aacute;n in October 2019, only to let him escape after gunmen shot up the city with high-powered weapons.
L&oacute;pez Obrador said at the time he had made the decision to avoid the loss of life.
L&oacute;pez Obrador entered office highly critical of the toll of his predecessors' drug war. He embraced the phrase &ldquo;hugs, not bullets&rdquo; to describe his approach to Mexico's chronic violence, which would focus on social programs aimed at weakening the draw of organized crime.
But four years into his six-year term, the death toll remains high.
In July, Mexico captured Rafael Caro Quintero, once one of the godfathers of drug trafficking and the man allegedly responsible for the murder of a DEA agent more than three decades ago, just days after L&oacute;pez Obrador met with Biden at the White House.
At the time, the capture was seen as a signal that Mexico could be willing to go after high-profile cartel bosses again, something L&oacute;pez Obrador had been loathe to do.&nbsp;
