In his column for Daily Telegraph, the former England skipper wrote, "After a humbling series defeat in India, I strongly believe that a dose of honesty is the most important thing for this England team right now."
"The great frustration is that they have the talent to be really competitive all over the world but they have blown two big series and in this case it was because their batting failed miserably."
"Every interview you hear the same stuff, about excitement, opportunity and fun, that everyone is having the time of their life."
"I have been around many of them in the last couple of years and their language can be inspiring. I admire some of it, but I can be a bit of an old cynic, and I worry that they are speaking a language that not all of them truly believe, which is dangerous.
"Certain players will believe it, but not everyone. We can't all think the same." He added, "Victories are what keep the fun bus on the road, not endlessly talking about how much fun you are having.
"The truth is that this can't always be fun, because it's so hard. Positivity is good, and inspiring, but honesty is also required."
Vaughan said those running the team must not shy away from taking tough calls and for that, they don't need to look beyond Guardiola.
"The team message is never to doubt anything, never admit they were wrong or they could have done things differently. Everything is very cosy. Everyone is mates: players, coaches, backroom staff. That does not breed an environment of ruthlessness.
"I know I bang on about how brilliant Pep Guardiola is, but you don't hear about him being mates with Manchester City players. He's their boss and he doesn't always do what his players want him to."
"He makes ruthless decisions about selection and training regimes." Vaughan was least amused with the English players spending time in Abu Dhabi and playing golf in Bengaluru when there were long breaks between Tests.
"England's management give the players just about everything that they want, like a break in Abu Dhabi with no cricket kit and a golf trip to Bangalore in the middle of the tour.
"I am not one for old-school preparation, with three first-class matches at the start of a tour. Those days are gone, and it's not needed. But surely with two long breaks, you need to get some cricket into the outside of the team, so they are ready if required, and to keep those in the XI on their toes.
"It also might help players in the team find form. By doing nothing, you get yourself into a Catch 22." He added, "I do worry it's a backroom team made up of cheerleaders. That's based on what I hear in public, and maybe it's different in the changing room, but players need challenging and questioning at times."

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has made the statement on the back of England's aggressive "Bazball" strategy under coach Brendon McCullum and Stokes which backfired in the ongoing India tour.

&nbsp;For Michael Vaughan, Pep Guardiola is the best sporting leader in the last 15 years and the former England skipper won't mind if Ben Stokes employs Manchester City manager's approach of never allowing players to take their places for granted.
Vaughan made the statement on the back of England's aggressive "Bazball" strategy under coach Brendon McCullum and Stokes which backfired in the ongoing India tour.
England have already lost the five-match series 3-1 after winning the first Test in Hyderabad.
Vaughan questioned the approach of England batters and demanded greater accountability from them.
"I often mention Pep Guardiola's approach. In my eyes he's the best sporting leader of this generation, say the last 15 years. He never allows his players to get comfortable. He always keeps them guessing, and they all know they are guaranteed nothing," he wrote in a column for Daily Telegraph.
"If a great sporting leader like Pep has everyone on their toes like that, is it right that an England cricket team that is decent but struggling to crack the next level should be as comfortable as it seems? "The whole batting lineup has known week in, week out on this tour that it will be playing the next game. That is about to change, because after this tour Harry Brook will be back. He has to bat at No 5, because he should be the bedrock of their batting with Joe Root. Does that mean England's statement moment is coming?," he questioned.
Vaughan questioned England's selection policy and said despite losing the series the visitors have a lot at stake to play for in the final Test in Dharamsla beginning March 7.
"Consistency of selection is such a fine balance in team sports. Making people comfortable is right, and England have generally batted well over the last two years.
"There comes a point, though, where when it's your batting that is costing you the biggest series you can't keep sending the same guys out there every week," he wrote.
"The series may have been lost already with a game to spare but a big week looms for England in Dharamsala. There is a massive difference between losing the series 3-2 and 4-1. You have lost either way but 3-2 would show England were right in this series for much of it, and two wins in India is an achievement." Vaughan said a loss in Dharamsala would be a demoralising result for England.
He once again criticised England's batters approach.
"India haven't lost two matches in a series at home since 2012, on their run of 17 series wins in a row. 4-1 would be a very disappointing end to a disappointing winter, with the World Cup debacle, both white-ball series lost in the Caribbean and even a poor World Cup for the Under 19s," he wrote.
"It's a huge week for a number of England's batsmen. When we think of this England team, we think of their wonderfully dynamic batting. But when you look at why they haven't won any of their last three series, it's down to the batting.
"There never seems to be much scrutiny or noise around England's batsmen. Even last week I chuckled. They lost in Ranchi in large part because they didn't bat well enough, but there was lots of finger pointing at Ollie Robinson, a bowler who scored an important half-century! "He looked well short of a gallop with the ball and dropped a catch but I thought it was ironic that he became a scapegoat. It&rsquo;s classic 'batsmen vs bowlers stuff." Vaughan feels when it comes to team selection there should be consistency in the batting order.
"Complacency can be damaging. As a management team, how you approach selection of batsmen and bowlers is obviously different. Fast bowlers, especially, sit out games and are rightly rotated to preserve their bodies," he wrote.
"With batsmen you want consistency. When you play like England do, backing is important. Aggressive, expansive cricket means mistakes will be made. Players need to have the confidence to take on risky shots without fear that they will be dropped immediately. That is good, and as captain I always preferred to give a player one game too many than one too few." In hindsight he also took a took a dig at McCullum and Stokes for their approach.
"I do wonder, though, if this England setup takes backing a bit too far. Since Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum took over, only one batsman has been dropped, and even that was the tamest dropping you will ever see. "England inherited Alex Lees from the previous regime and gave him a crack, but always had their eye on Ben Duckett to open with Zak Crawley so simply moved Lees on at the end of their first summer," he wrote.
"Ultimately, on any sporting team's road to greatness, you need a moment, a rod, where every player realises 'wow, maybe I'm not part of the furniture'. As soon as people think they are part of the furniture it creates a bit of comfortable complacency, which can be damaging.

Former skipper Michael Vaughan is worried England will become a side that doesn't win much despite putting in the hard yards, adding that the team's batting unit needs to strike a balance between playing aggressive and traditional cricket to succeed in India.
Since adopting the 'Bazball' approach, England have enjoyed a good run but the same no-holds-barred approach has also cost them several matches and series, including the Ashes last year.
"England have become a difficult team to criticise too much because they are so good to watch. Every game they play has us all absolutely gripped, and they have improved massively under Ben Stokes," Vaughan wrote in his coulmn for 'The Telegraph'.
"However, I do worry that they might become a team who do all this great work only to not actually win very much. They didn't win the Ashes when they should have done and now they have let India back into a series when they still have a load of big names, including Virat Kohli, to come back." England had taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match series in India but Ben Stokes and his men let the hosts draw parity in the second Test as all their batters, barring Zak Crawley, were unable to get big scores.
"England will not win the series if they bat the way they did in Visakhapatnam. I actually think the batsmen need to take a leaf out of the bowlers' book. With ball in hand, they have been quite traditional at times, aggressive at others, and they have gone up and down the gears in terms of how attacking their fields have been." England had pulled off a dramatic 28-run win in the series opener on the back of vice-captain Ollie Pope's epic second-innings knock of 196 and left-arm spinner Tom Hartley's seven-wicket haul in the second innings.
"The young spinners have been fantastic but, for me, James Anderson's brilliant performance shows that they have to get another seamer, probably Ollie Robinson, in the side with him.
"The batsmen, meanwhile, look like they only have one way to play. They are in fifth gear from ball one. I don't mind some of them playing like that because they are better for it.
"But Joe Root should forget it. He has 10,000 Test runs playing like Joe Root. He doesn't need to be a 'Bazballer'. It is time for someone in the management to put an arm around Joe and say "please just be yourself". I think it's as simple as the fact that he is too wrapped up in 'Bazball', the whole ethos of excitement and entertainment." One of England's best batters in the format, Root has collected over 10,000 runs (11,468) against his name.
However, the former skipper has struggled for runs in the ongoing series while adopting an aggressive approach.
Root managed scores of 5 and 16 in England's 106-run loss to India in the second Test. While Jasprit Bumrah picked up his wicket for the eighth time, Ravichandran Ashwin put an end to his frenetic innings in the second essay.
"This is particularly important against spin. Along with Graham Gooch, Root is the best player of spin England has ever produced.
"To see him bat the way he did in the second innings, that's not Root, and it's not the way England are going to win in India, just gifting wickets away. I knew something was up when I saw him get off the mark in both innings with reverse sweeps. He doesn't play like that.
"He gets himself in, then takes risks. Let the firecrackers play like that. Joe has to be the rock, the calming influence while the mad men tee off around him." Vaughan added.

India wouldn't have lost the Hyderabad Test to England if Virat Kohli was their captain, according to former English skipper Michael Vaughan, who believes Rohit Sharma completely "switched off" during the game.
In a dominant position after taking a 190-run first-innings lead, a Kohli-less India collapsed to a shocking 28-run defeat in spin-friendly conditions, handing England a 1-0 lead in the five match-series. It was India's first-ever Test loss in Hyderabad.
Kohli missed the opening game and will also sit out the second Test in Visakhapatnam due to personal reasons.
"They missed Virat Kohli's captaincy massively in Test cricket. Under Virat's captaincy that week, India wouldn't have lost the game," Vaughan said on YouTube channel 'Club Prairie Fire'.
Vaughan was critical of Rohit's leadership during the game.
"Rohit is a legend and a great player. But I felt he just switched off completely." Vaughan had also slammed Rohit for not being proactive during the series opener last week.
"I thought Rohit Sharma's captaincy was very, very average. I thought he was so reactive, I don't think he manoeuvred his field or was proactive with his bowling changes.
"And he didn't have any answer to Ollie Pope&rsquo;s sweeps or reverse sweeps," Vaughan had written in his column for 'The Telegraph'.
Kohli had stepped down as captain after India's tour of South Africa in 2022 after a fairly good run during which the team attained the world no.1 ICC ranking.

But Vaughan pointed out how England struggled against Australian spinner Nathan Lyon during the Ashes and said that the Bazball strategy may not work in India.

England's aggressive approach, termed Bazball named after their head coach Brendon McCullum, has created a lot of buzz in the cricketing world in the last one and a half years with the team winning 13 of their last 18 red-ball games.
But Vaughan pointed out how England struggled against Australian spinner Nathan Lyon during the Ashes and said the strategy may not work in India.
"Ultimately the hardest place to play in the world is India and if you actually go back to the Ashes when Nathan Lyon was fit and bowling nicely, Australia were 2-0 up in the series," Vaughan told foxsports.com.au.
"That was just one innings and a few overs in the first innings at Lords&hellip; Nathan came out with a lovely line the other week where he said he&rsquo;s 2-nil up against Bazball.
"Now that&rsquo;s just one spinner, if you look at that five-for he got at Edgbaston and the field was spread and England got out to him by playing ridiculous shots at times." England will play five Tests in India as part of their ICC World Test Championships cycle starting on January 25 in Hyderabad.
"If you add in Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar Patel on spinning wickets in India, they may get blown away, they may get absolutely destroyed.
"They will go out and play exactly the same way, we&rsquo;ve already spoken about the impact they are going to try and achieve in India with the way they play.
"It will be great watching, but you will have to fancy three quality spinners might do a job on England when one quality spinner in Nathan Lyon did the job in English conditions. It&rsquo;s going to be very tough for them to win in India." England on Monday named four specialist spinners -- Jack Leach, teenage leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed and uncapped duo of Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir, in the 16-member squad for the Test series in India.
After Hyderabad, England will play the rest four Tests in Visakhapatnam, Rajkot, Ranchi and Dharamsala respectively.

They lost to Ireland by 5 runs on DLS when the rain didn't allow a full 20-overs-per-side contest.
Vaughan in a series of tweets blasted the ICC for their lack of adequate arrangements. The 48-year-old asked why the ICC couldn't have utilised the Docklands stadium for such a scenario, where there's a roof that can be closed when it rains.
Vaughan also compared similar situations in Sri Lanka where the ground was fully covered during rains and games resumed quickly when it&rsquo;d stop raining.
England captain Jos Buttler though was a lot more subdued with his take on the whole issue. Buttler said that since the playing conditions weren't safe, it was the right decision to call the game off as players' safety was more important.
Buttler said since cricket is played under the influence of natural elements, they can't really complain about the weather as it influences how the game conditions are and that's what makes the sport unique.
England will next face New Zealand on November 1 at the Gabba.

The controversy surrounding Deepti Sharma running out England's Charlotte Dean at the non-striker's end in the 3rd ODI seems never-ending. 
After the social media drama, the Indian spinner clarified that the Indian team had warned Dean to stay in her crease. Deepti also admitted that it was their plan as she was doing it repeatedly. 'So, according to the guidelines of the rules we did it.' Deepti also claimed to have informed the umpire before running Dean out.

The controversy surrounding Deepti Sharma running out England's Charlotte Dean at the non-striker's end in the 3rd ODI seems never-ending.&nbsp;
After the social media drama, the Indian spinner clarified that the Indian team had warned Dean to stay in her crease. Deepti also admitted that it was their plan as she was doing it repeatedly. 'So, according to the guidelines of the rules we did it.' Deepti also claimed to have informed the umpire before running Dean out.&nbsp;
However, England skipper Heather Knight, who missed the game with a hip injury, accused India of "lying" about their warnings.
