The state capital has been cut off from the rest of the country due to a landslide on National Highway 6 at Hunthar, officials said.

At least 17 people, including two minors, were killed and six-seven others were missing as a stone quarry collapsed in Mizoram's Aizawl district on Tuesday morning amid incessant rain as an impact of cyclone Remal, officials said.
Several other people also went missing in landslides elsewhere in the state capital which was cut off from the rest of the country.
The incident happened around 6 am in an area between Melthum and Hlimen on the southern outskirts of Aizawl town.
"We have recovered 17 bodies so far and the rescue operations are going on. We suspect that 6-7 more people are still trapped under the rubble," Mizoram Director General of Police Anil Shukla told PTI.
He said that heavy rain was affecting rescue operations at the disaster site.
The rain triggered landslides at several other places in the state and at least two persons have been "swept away", Shukla said.
Aizawl's Deputy Commissioner Nazuk Kumar said that the search operations will continue till the entire site is cleared.
A four-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl are among the victims of the stone quarry collapse, another police officer said.
"We have also rescued two persons alive from the site," he said.
A landslide swept away a building in Aizawl's Salem Veng, following which three persons went missing. Search is underway for them, an official said.
The state capital has been cut off from the rest of the country due to a landslide on National Highway 6 at Hunthar, officials said.

The counting of votes in Mizoram has finally begun in the state. The elections for the 40 assembly seats in Mizoram took place on November 7 and witnessed a tough competition between key players including the Mizo National Front (MNF), Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), Congress, and BJP.
The counting was supposed to happen on Sunday along with Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana. However, it was deferred by the Election Commission following appeals by political parties, NGOs, churches and students' bodies as Sunday holds a special significance for the people of Mizoram, a Christian-majority state.
As per the exit polls projection, there is going to be a showdown between the regional heavyweights MNF and ZPM.&nbsp;
Mizoram is a Christian-majority state. Zoramthanga of the MNF became Chief Minister after the 1998 Assembly polls, ending Congress's 10-year rule. The MNF governed for a decade until Congress won in 2008 and 2013. Returning to power in 2018, MNF aims for another victory in the 40-member Assembly this year.

The counting was earlier scheduled for December 3, along that in four other states -- Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana - where assembly polls were held last month.

The counting of votes in Mizoram will take place on December 4, a day after it was originally scheduled, the Election Commission said on Friday.
It said the decision was taken following representations from various quarters requesting for a change in the date of counting from December 3 on the ground that Sunday holds a special significance for the people of Mizoram, a Christian-majority state.
"The Commission, having considered these representations, has decided to revise the date of counting for the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram from 3rd December, 2023 (Sunday) to 4th December, 2023 (Monday)," it stated.
The counting was earlier scheduled for December 3, along that in four other states -- Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana - where assembly polls were held last month.

In Mizoram, while India TV-CNX said the MNF would get 14-18 seats, ZPM 12-16, Congress 8-10 and BJP 0-2 in the 40-member House, ABP News-C Voter said MNF would get 15-21, ZPM 12-18 and Congress 2-8.
Jan Ki Baat said the MNF would get 10-14 seats, ZPM 15-25 seats, Congress 5-9 and the BJP 0-2.
While Republic Matrize said the MNF would get 17-22, ZPM 7-12, Congress 7-10 and BJP 1-2, Times Now-ETG gave 14-18 seats to the MNF, 10-14 to the ZPM, 9-13 to the Congress and 0-2 to the BJP.&nbsp;

Explained: why are Mizoram churches holding prayers for change in counting date

The Christian groups said that the Election Commission allowed them to meet the chief election commissioner and other officials on Tuesday at 3 pm.

Churches in Mizoram held prayers to seek divine intervention to change the date of counting of votes for state assembly polls held on November 7, a church leader said on Sunday.
On Saturday, Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a conglomerate of 15 major churches, had urged churches to organise prayers during church service on Saturday night or Sunday to seek help from God so that counting is not held on Sunday, which is a sacred day for the majority of Christians in the state, the leader said.
He said that prayers were held by some churches on Saturday night, while others on Sunday.
In its letter to churches, the MKHC had expressed disappointment over no sign of progress in the efforts to reschedule the date of counting of votes.
Citing that leaders of the NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC) will meet the Election Commission on November 28, the MKHC urged church members to hold prayers to ensure that the efforts of the leaders bear fruit.
Mizoram Presbyterian Church, the largest denomination in the state, also separately urged its members to hold prayers to ensure that the date of counting is changed.
Meanwhile, a five-member delegation of NGOCC, currently camping in Delhi, will meet Chief Election Commissioner and other officials of the Election Commission on Tuesday to re-appeal and press its demand for a change of date for counting of votes.

The committee general secretary Malsawmliana said that the delegation visited the ECI office on Friday seeking an appointment.
He said that the Election Commission allowed them to meet the chief election commissioner and other officials on Tuesday at 3 pm.
The ECI had fixed December 3 as the day for counting of votes for five states - Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Telangana.
However, political parties, civil society organisations, churches and a church-sponsored poll watchdog in Mizoram had opposed it and sent numerous pleas to the Election Commission urging it to reschedule the counting date because it falls on Sunday, a sacred day for Christians in the Christian-majority state.

&nbsp;It was all about 'secret crush' as Congress leader Shashi Tharoor hummed, clapped and danced to a famous Mizo song, and had the "most fun election campaign" of his entire political career.
The flamboyant leader may not have understood the language of the song 'Di Ruk Te', meaning 'secret crush', sung by popular Mizo singer Sangtei Khuptong, but that did not deter him from shaking a leg, along with state Congress president Lalsawta, on a stage in front of a packed audience at Vanapa Hall here on Saturday.
Khuptong was invited to sing a song in between the Congress MP's interactions with the citizens of Aizawl on the November 7 Mizoram elections.

As soon as she was about to leave the stage after her performance, Tharoor requested her to sing a Mizo song, to which she readily agreed.
Khuptong also invited the Kerala MP, Lalsawta and other senior Congress leaders on the stage to join her.
On the stage, Tharoor asked the meaning of the song and she explained it to him and other non-Mizo party officials.
"Do you have a secret crush?" Khuptong asked the Parliamentarian after telling him about the song.
"Who would not? Of course, I have," he replied amid a thunder of laughter.
Then she started singing the song and everyone on the stage started dancing to it. Tharoor was seen dancing, clapping and trying to hum the song. The audience too stood on their feet and joined the singer.
After Khuptong completed the song, Tharoor took the cordless microphone from her and thanked her for keeping his request to sing a Mizo song.
"You are fabulous. I must say, in 15 years of politics, this is the most fun I have had in a campaign," he said amid a huge round of applause from the audience, most of whom were youths.
In the interaction programme, people asked several questions to the senior Congress leader on a range of topics and he replied to them accordingly.
Tharoor arrived in Aizawl on Friday on a three-day visit to campaign for party candidates. He held a series of meetings with various sections of the society and also addressed a press conference. He will leave Mizoram on Sunday.
The Congress is contesting in all 40 constituencies of the state.&nbsp;

Over 30 polling centres in the state have been declared critical owing to the region sharing international border with Myanmar and Bangladesh.&nbsp;

Campaigning for the November 7 Mizoram assembly elections ended at 4pm on Sunday with no reports of any law and order problems throughout the month-long period, additional chief electoral officer H Lianzela said.
He asserted that any form of electioneering, public meetings, press conferences by political parties, interviews and panel discussions in the media have been strictly prohibited till voting is over.
Out of the 1,276 voting centres in the state, 149 are remote polling stations, Lianzela said, adding around 30 polling stations along the inter-state and international borders have been declared critical and vulnerable.
Security has been tightened across the state and along international borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar, a police officer said. Mizoram shares a 510km porous border with Myanmar and a 318km border with Bangladesh.
At least 3,000 policemen and 5,400 personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed for the polls, the officer added.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Kiren Rijiju visited the state and campaigned for BJP candidates.
BJP state president Vanlalhmuaka said the party will win 6-8 seats.
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh and Shashi Tharoor campaigned for party candidates.
During campaigning, ruling party MNF tried to capitalise on issue of refugees and internally displaced people from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur and Mizo sub-nationalism besides highlighting the development in the state over the last five years despite financial constraints triggered by the pandemic.
The opposition highlighted the failure of the MNF government in fulfilling its promises, including implementation of the flagship programme, Socio Economic Development (SEDP), construction of flyovers, good roads, among others.
The ZPM banked on its policy of change and introduction of a new system of governance.
More than 8.57 lakh electorates, including 4,39,026 women, will decide the fate of 174 candidates. Results are scheduled to be announced on December 3.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Monday said he will not share the stage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he comes here to campaign for the ensuing assembly elections.
PM Modi is likely to visit Mamit town in the western part of the state on October 30, and campaign for the BJP candidates.
"The people of Mizoram are all Christians. When the people of Manipur (Meities) burned hundreds of churches in Manipur, they were (Mizos) totally against that kind of idea. To have sympathy with the BJP at this time will be a big minus point for my party," Zoramthanga told BBC News in an interview.
"It will be better if the prime minister comes alone and he shares the platform by himself, and I take the stage separately by myself," he said.
Zoramthanga's MNF is a part of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and an ally of the NDA at the Centre. However, the party does not work with the BJP in Mizoram.
The chief minister said that the MNF joined the NDA and NEDA as it is totally against the Congress, and does not want to be part of any alliance led by it.
On giving shelter to people from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur, Zoramthanga said that the Mizoram government was following the footsteps of the Centre.
"The Indian government helped the refugees from the erstwhile East Pakistan and even armed them to attain independence. We don't arm the refugees from Myanmar but we simply provide them food and shelter on humanitarian grounds," he said.
More than 40,000 people from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur are taking shelter in the state.
Zoramthanga said that it was the responsibility of the Centre to restore peace in Manipur so that people can go back to their native state.
Mizoram will vote for its 40-member assembly on November 7, and the votes will be counted on December 3.

A four-member committee has been set up by Indian Railways to investigate the recent <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/mizoram-17-dead-in-bridge-collapse-1692775550447">bridge collapse in Mizoram</a> that killed at least 22 workers.
The committee, which has experts from premier institutes and governmental branches, will have to submit a report a month after it is formed.
Railway officials attributed the bridge collapse to a faulty gantry that was set up to aid construction.
The four members of the committee are BP Awasthi of RDSO, Dr Dipti Ranjan Sahoo of IIT Delhi Sharad Kumar Agarwal of IRICEN and Sandeep Sharma, Chief Bridge Engineer, NF Railway, an order from Indian Railways said.
So far bodies of 22 persons have been recovered while three workers who were injured are in hospital. One worker is still missing and search operations are on for him, officials said.

Charred bodies of three Mizoram residents, including a woman, were found in a jungle inside Myanmar near the international border, a senior police officer said on Friday.
The three had gone missing on March 19 after they set out for Myanmar from Ainak village in Siaha district.
They had been held hostage by miscreants, believed to be from Myanmar, who were once involved with a rebel group before they disassociated from it, Inspector General of Police (Law &amp; Order) Lalbiakthanga Khiangte told PTI.
The miscreants killed the three apparently for failing to return in full amount the money meant for purchasing weapons, the police officer said.
The charred bodies were recovered from a forest inside Myanmar about two kilometres from the international border on Thursday, he said.
"The perpetrators of the crime are believed to be from Myanmar. The state police have launched a manhunt for the miscreants,&rdquo; Khiangte said.
Mizoram shares a 510 km long international border with Myanmar.

In an order issued on January 31, the Mizoram government has reportedly directed authorities against issuing birth and death certificates to refugees and undocumented immigrants from countries such as Myanmar to ensure there are no claims of citizenship from them, Hindustan Times reported.&nbsp;
The order came amid an influx of refugees from Myanmar since March last year following the military coup in that country.
Around 40,000 people from Myanmar are estimated to be living in the state. Hundreds of refugees from Bangladesh have also recently entered Mizoram.

At least 12 people are feared trapped after a stone quarry collapsed in south Mizoram district, about 160 km from Aizawl, on Monday, a senior police officer said.

The incident occurred at around 3 pm when labourers of ABCI Infrastructure private limited were working in the quarry at Maudarh village, Hnahthial, Superintendent of Police (SP), Vineet Kumar said.
He said that 13 people were working at the place when it caved in.
While one worker managed to escape from the spot the remaining 12 failed to do so and were trapped under the debris, the SP told PTI.
Rescue operation is in progress and and no person has been rescued from the debris till 7:30 pm, Kumar said.
Hnahthial district officials and a medical team also rushed to the spot soon after the incident.
People familiar with the incident said that loose soil caved in from the above while the labourers were breaking and collecting the stones at the quarry.
Volunteers of Young Mizo Association (YMA) from nearby villages also rushed to the spot for the rescue operation, they said.

Maudarh is a small hamlet located about 23 km away from Hnahthial town.
The company which is currently constructing a highway between Hnahthial and Dawn village, collects stones or boulders from the quarry.&nbsp;

As a video went viral purportedly showing the daughter of Mizoram's Chief Minister physically attacking a doctor, CM Zoramthanga issued a public apology.
In the video doing the rounds on social media, Milari Chhangte is allegedly seen hitting a dermatologist at a clinic on 17 August 2022. Chhangte allegedly hit the doctor after he asked her to take an appointment if she wanted to consult him, as per reports.
As the video went viral, the medical fraternity came out to support the doctor, and 800 doctors staged a protest on 20 August. In response, Mizoram CM issued an apology via his Instagram account.
Zoramthanga said, "We have nothing to justify or say in defence of our daughter's behaviour towards the doctor. We ask forgiveness from the doctor and the public." The CM also met the doctor to apologise for his daughter's behaviour. Zoramthanga also reportedly thanked the Indian Medical Association, or IMA, for not initiating "stringent" action against his daughter.
Earlier, Chhangte's brother had claimed that she "went out of control" due to mental stress.
