The minutes of the February monetary policy committee meet clearly show that inflation was the overarching worry for a majority of the MPC members. However, there was some difference of opinion as to the extent of concerns of inflation. While 4 members voted for the 25 basis points rate hike that was announced, 2 members voted for a pause in the rate hikes.&nbsp; Dr Ashima Goyal was of the opinion that it time should be given for a possible softening of both inflation and growth as well as to allow the effects of past monetary tightening to play out. Echoing a similar view, Prof Jayant Verma said that the 25 basis points rate hike was not warranted given diminished inflationary expectations, and heightened growth concerns.&nbsp;
However, RBI Governor Das said that the committment to bring down inflation must be unwavering, while being mindful of growth. On future action, the governor pointed out that it would be inadvisable to provide a specific guidance when the uncertainty is so high.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Similarly, Dr. Shashanka Bhide highlighted the importance of reducing demand pressure given the persistance of core inflation. Dr. Rajiv Ranjan said that "it will be premature to pause when there are no definitive signs of slowdown in inflation, particularly core inflation".&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Dr. Michael Debabrata Patra voiced a similar sentiment and also highlighted that the fight against inflation is complicated by the global outlook.&nbsp;

The Reserve Bank since May has increased the repo or benchmark lending rates by 190 basis points, to calm down inflation which has remained above its comfort level of 6 per cent since January

As the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) begins its three-day monetary policy meeting, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das is expected to announce the final rate hike of 2022 to curb inflation.&nbsp;
According to experts, after three back-to-back 50 basis points hike in interest rates, the Reserve Bank may opt for a lower rate increase of 25-35 bps in lending rates at its coming monetary policy review amid retail inflation showing signs of moderation and the need to push growth.&nbsp;
In addition to the domestic factors, the RBI may also take some cues from the US Federal Reserve which hinted at a lower rate hike of 50 basis later in the month. In order to combat inflation, the Federal Reserve had earlier hiked the key interest rates four times by 75 basis points (bps) each.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will come out with its next bi-monthly policy review on December 7 at the end of the three-day meeting of the MPC.

The Reserve Bank of India has announced to postpone the&nbsp;Monetary Policy Committee&nbsp;meeting.
A major reason for the decision is possibly the three vacant posts of external members that the government has not filled so far. The four-year terms of three external members of the MPC, appointed in 2016, ended last month.
