A 30-year-old man, who came to Kerala from UAE last month, has tested positive for Monkeypox, making him the fifth case of the virus from the southern state.

Health Minister Veena George on Tuesday said the man had arrived at the Calicut Airport on July 27 and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in the Malappuram district.

The second confirmed case of the infection was reported in Kannur district on July 18 and the third case was reported in neighbouring Malappuram on July 22.
All those who tested positive for the disease had arrived in Kerala from abroad.
The Kerala government, on Monday, confirmed that the 22-year-old man, who died on July 30, tested positive for Monkeypox making the fatality the first such one in the country.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals), with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe.
With the eradication of smallpox in 1980 and the subsequent cessation of smallpox vaccination, Monkeypox has emerged as the most important orthopoxvirus for public health.&nbsp;

The Department of Health and Human services is releasing its first wave of research on the efficacy of monkeypox vaccine, and the White House says it shows that unvaccinated individuals are 14 times more likely to get monkeypox than individuals who have gotten a single dose of the vaccine.
The United States has seen more than 25,000 cases of monkeypox this year, and the data was collected from 32 states between July and September 2022.
"These new data provide us with a level of cautious optimism that the vaccine is working as intended," said CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky during a briefing Wednesday by the White House National Response Team.
"These early findings and similar results from studies in other countries suggest that even one dose of the monkeypox vaccine offers at least some initial protection against infection," she said.
"We continue to collect data on what happens after second dose. And as soon as those data are available, we will again present them to you," Walensky said.

"Our strategy is working, said Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, the White House Monkeypox Response deputy coordinator.

The central government is on an alert even as the count of infections in some other countries has risen.&nbsp; NITI Aayog's member (Health) Dr V K Paul said that there is absolutely no need for any panic as the government has taken significant measures to keep the disease in check.&nbsp;
In an interview with ANI, Dr Paul sought to assert that there was no need for any undue panic but added that it was still important that the country and the society stay vigilant.&nbsp;
"There is no need to panic, as of now, but one must report in time if they spot any symptoms, he said.&nbsp; According to World Health Organization (WHO), more than 18,000 cases have been reported from 78 countries.&nbsp;
"The monkeypox outbreak can be stopped if countries, communities and individuals inform themselves, take the risks seriously, and take the steps needed to stop transmission and protect vulnerable groups," said Dr Tedros, Director General, WHO on Thursday.&nbsp;
Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the same family of viruses that causes smallpox. The disease is endemic in regions like West and Central Africa but lately, cases have been reported from non-endemic countries too, according to the WHO.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis that gets transmitted to humans from animals and has symptoms similar to those seen in smallpox patients, albeit clinically less severe.&nbsp;

The national capital has reported one confirmed case of monkeypox, taking the total number of such patients in the country to four.
Till now, 14 contacts of Delhi&rsquo;s first <a href="https://www.editorji.com/world-news/world-health-organisation-declares-monkeypox-global-public-health-emergency-1658599207679" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">monkeypox </a>patient have been identified and none of them has shown symptoms, sources said, adding one of the contacts had complained of body ache but he is doing fine now and has no symptoms.
Another suspected case has been admitted to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital in Delhi and the samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune.
Officials, however, said there is no need to panic. One has to stay in isolation for 21 days from the last contact with a monkeypox patient or their contaminated materials, they said.

Because of the recent developments, the Centre issued guidelines for monkeypox management. The Delhi government has directed its hospitals and 11 revenue districts to follow the guidelines.
The Centre's guidelines state that health workers who have unprotected exposure to monkeypox patients or possibly contaminated materials need not be excluded from duty if asymptomatic but should undergo surveillance for symptoms for 21 days.
The infected person should wear a triple-ply mask while the skin lesions should be covered to the best extent possible to minimise the risk of contact with others, according to the guidelines.
It stated that patients should remain in isolation until all lesions have healed and the scabs completely fallen off.
Explaining the process of identifying a contact, an official said a person who comes in contact with an infected person through face-to-face exposure, direct physical contact, or comes in contact with contaminated materials such as clothing or bedding is identified as a primary contact.
"District surveillance teams ask contacts to self-monitor their symptoms and stay in touch with them. Preferably, the contacts should isolate themselves in separate rooms but they can also stay in the same room. They should ideally wear a mask and follow hand hygiene and social distancing norms," an official said.
The official also said the asymptomatic contacts should not donate blood, cells, tissues, organs or semen while under surveillance.

The symptoms include lesions, which usually begin within one to three days of the onset of fever, last for around two to four weeks and are often described as painful until the healing phase when they turn itchy.
In May this year, multiple cases of monkeypox were identified in several non-endemic countries. Globally, over 16,000 cases of monkeypox have now been reported from 75 countries and there have been five deaths so far due to the outbreak. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared monkeypox a global public health emergency of international concern.&nbsp;
