The study&nbsp;released by the&nbsp;American Health Association finds that eating two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables daily could be the key to living a long life.&nbsp;
The study's&nbsp;lead author said that 'this amount likely offers the most benefit in terms of prevention of major chronic disease and is a relatively achievable intake for the general public.'
But some fruit and veg&nbsp;seem to fare better than the others. The team says that&nbsp;green leafy vegetables, including spinach, kale and lettuce, as well as vegetables rich in beta carotene and citrus fruits and berries exhibited the most benefit in fighting disease.
For the purpose of this research, the team&nbsp;followed over 100,000 adult participants from 1984 to 2014.&nbsp;

However, a new&nbsp;German&nbsp;study says that there&rsquo;s no real added benefit of drinking any amount of alcohol. In fact, the so-called benefits can be chalked up to&nbsp;risky behaviours of alcohol abstainers in their earlier life.
Published in the journal&nbsp;<a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article?id=10.1371/journal.pmed.1003819#sec014" target="_blank">PLOS Medicine</a>, the research&nbsp;found that factors like former dependence on alcohol or drugs, risky drinking and&nbsp;cigarette&nbsp;smoking&nbsp;significantly&nbsp;affected the health risks in alcohol-abstainers.
The team found that&nbsp;people&nbsp;who don&rsquo;t drink&nbsp;alcohol will not usually have a higher mortality risk than those who consume low to moderate amounts. This&nbsp;means that there is no reason to recommend drinking alcohol for health benefits.

So, why do some studies claim moderate drinking is good for you?
A 2016&nbsp;meta-review of 87 studies&nbsp;in the <a href="https://www.jsad.com/doi/10.15288/jsad.2016.77.185" target="_blank">Journal of&nbsp;Studies on&nbsp;Alcohol&nbsp;and Drugs</a>&nbsp;found that such estimates are&nbsp;significantly altered by study design and characteristics.&nbsp;Once you adjust for&nbsp;abstainer biases and quality-related study characteristics, you don&rsquo;t see any significant reduction in mortality risk for low-volume drinkers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As opposed to the popular belief that fats are harmful, they are actually essential&nbsp;macronutrients that help the human body derive energy to function. ALA or Alpha-linolenic acid is an&nbsp;essential omega-3 fatty acid&nbsp;found in several plant-based foods. It is necessary for normal human growth and development. According to the American Heart Association, ALA is best found in soyabean, canola oil, walnuts, flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds.
A recent study published in the BMJ, a weekly peer-reviewed medical trade journal, found that diets with higher levels of ALA had associations with overall lower mortality risk.
The research is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 41 different studies. The meta-analysis looked at all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, coronary heart disease mortality and cancer mortality. The researchers also observed both dietary intake of ALA and blood levels of ALA.

The study concluded that high ALA intake was associated with a lower risk of death from all causes. It was also associated with lower mortality risk from cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease.
Researchers particularly noted that an increase of 1 gram intake of ALA per day was associated with a 5% lower risk of cardiovascular disease mortality. And while the results indicate potential benefits of ALA intake, it also states a need for continued research regarding recommended levels of ALA intake.

But things are not that positive when it comes to the added sugars in packaged foods. In fact, a recent study published&nbsp;in the journal&nbsp;Circulation claims that just a 20 per cent reduction of sugar from packaged foods and 40 per cent reduction from beverages, 2.48 million cases of cardiovascular disease in the U.S. could be avoided.

The proposal also says that the&nbsp;reduction&nbsp;could help prevent nearly 7,50,000 cases of diabetes in the U.S.
Overall,&nbsp;implementation of the measures could save at least 4,90,000&nbsp;lives from&nbsp;the current American adult population (aged 35 to 79).
The claims are based on a model designed by researchers from&nbsp;Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Tufts University, and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
The report urges people to choose unsweetened versions of products and call upon food companies to reduce portion sizes for products that are designed to serve a single person. The researchers believe that cutting sugar in packaged foods could play a major role in improving&nbsp;overall&nbsp;public health.
