"Once I quit international cricket, I wanted to spend a bit more time with my family. But, at that same time, to be mentally active, to have that passion to stay focussed &mdash; for me, I love farming, for me it is the motorbikes, I have started getting into vintage cars.
"These things de-stress me. If am stressed, I would maybe go to the garage, spend a couple of hours over there and I will just be fine, I would come back," he said.
"I have always felt growing up with a pet, whether it is a cat or a dog... I prefer dogs though. They have unconditional love towards you. I have said this in a previous interview, even if I lose a game and come back, my dog greets me the same way." He has been a much admired leader at CSK and Dhoni said that "we need to earn that respect of the people you're leading".
"You cannot command or demand respect. You need to earn it. I may have a position in an institution, and yes, that position needs to be respected. But me as an individual sitting on the chair, I need to earn that respect.
"I cannot just say 'respect me'! If you have the respect of the people around you, they give 10 to 15 percent more.
"India is slightly different. People talk about being professional. Yes, we Indians are professional, but our emotional connect is stronger. I feel as an Indian, my strength is the emotional connect. My connection with CSK is an emotional connect.
"It's not just a player who comes and plays for a couple of months and then goes back home." While he is not a big fan of social media, Dhoni would prefer Instagram over X to avoid controversy.
"I prefer Instagram over Twitter (X). I believe that nothing good has happened over Twitter, you know, especially in India, there's always a controversy. Somebody will write something and it turns into a controversy.
"I was like why do I need to be there? It used to be 140 characters. You cannot elaborate. Imagine me putting something over there and then it is left to the people to read it. And they just interpret what they want to interpret.
"So I'm like, no, no, that's not really for me. Instagram, still I like because I could put up my picture or video or something and just leave it. That is also changing now. So I still prefer Instagram, but I'm not very active because less distractions are better."

Reportedly, Dhoni played through continuous leg pain during IPL 2024, leading to him frequently batting in the lower order despite his high strike rate of over 200 runs.
As per a Times of India report, a source has disclosed that Dhoni has not informed anything in regards to his retirement plans to the CSK management. The source also disclosed that Dhoni informed the management that he would take the final call about his IPL future in the next couple of months.
The report indicates that Dhoni might also delay his decision depending on BCCI's position on the impact sub rule. The regulation will enable Dhoni to act as an additional batsman in the final two overs, during which he will not have to cover much ground on the field.
Other outside influences may affect Dhoni's choice. An upcoming mega auction for the next IPL season will require teams to retain a specific number of players, forcing CSK to make difficult decisions.

 MSD signs Sunil Gavaskar&rsquo;s shirt - 2023 It was an iconic fan moment as former India captain Sunil Gavaskar got his shirt signed by MS Dhoni during CSK&rsquo;s last home match against KKR in IPL 2023. As Dhoni and his team were doing a lap around the Chepauk stadium, Gavaskar ran towards MS to get his shirt signed. Gavaskar said later that it was an emotional moment for him.
 200th match as CSK captain - 2023 Chennai's match against Rajasthan Royals which the visitors won at the MA Chidambaram stadium was MSD&rsquo;s 200th game as Chennai&rsquo;s skipper. Overall it was his 214th assignment as IPL captain. He also became the first player in IPL history to captain a side in 200 matches. He joined the side in 2008 in the first edition and since then he has been part of the team for all the IPL editions in which CSK played.
 Captain Cool&rsquo;s not-so-cool side- 2019 It was a never-seen-before incident as the perpetually cool MSD lost his calm and stormed onto the ground to question the umpire's no-ball decision. While he was harshly criticised for that behaviour, he was only charged a lenient 50% match fee.  The stellar return- 2018 It was after 6 seasons and 2 years of the ban that the MS Dhoni-led side recaptured Chennai&rsquo;s lost glory as the Yellow Army won their 3rd IPL in 2018. CSK defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final by 8 wickets to clinch the 2018 title. CSK's Shane Watson emerged as the star of the show with a blazing 117* off 57 balls.
 Steve Smith replaces MSD as skipper- 2017 For the first time, MS Dhoni was removed from the captaincy in 2017, with Rising Pune Supergiant wanting a &lsquo;youngster&rsquo; to lead the team instead of the Rachi-born cricketer. The captaincy duties were handed over to then 27-year-old Steve Smith, who was also captaining the Australian team at that time.
 Dhoni&rsquo;s first IPL triumph The 2010 win was not only their first but also their most special win.  2008&rsquo;s most expensive buy On April 19, 2008, MS Dhoni, the then most expensive IPL buy made his IPL debut as the skipper of Chennai Super Kings. While Super Kings won by 33 runs against the erstwhile Kings XI Punjab, Dhoni scored only 2 runs off 3 balls. Dhoni, who had led an unfancied Indian team to a T20 World Cup victory just the previous year in 2007 was the hottest buzz in the market. Chennai, who are still holding on to the 3-time World Cup winning Indian captain after 17-long years had bought the then 26-years old for 6 crores.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting coach Michael Hussey has expressed his desire for the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni to continue his association with the team for a few more years. Despite stepping down as captain just before the start of the 2024 IPL season, Dhoni remains an integral part of CSK, both on and off the field.
The 42-year-old Dhoni handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad, surprising fans and the cricketing world alike. Hussey, speaking on ESPN's "Around the Wicket" show, highlighted Dhoni's ongoing contributions and his hope that Dhoni will continue to be involved with CSK.
"We are hoping he does keep going. He is still batting so well. He does prepare well - he gets into the camp very early and hits a lot of balls. He has been in good touch all season really," said Hussey. His comments underline Dhoni's dedication and the high standards he maintains, even after undergoing knee surgery post the last season.
Hussey also pointed out that managing Dhoni's workload has been crucial, given his recent surgery. "That [knee surgery] is why we have had to manage him a little bit, and he only comes in at the back end. But, there has been no one better in being able to come in and hit the ball so cleanly from ball one than MS. He has been phenomenal," Hussey added.
Dhoni, who has led CSK to five IPL titles, has adopted a lower batting position this season, often coming in at number eight and facing fewer deliveries. Despite this, his impact remains significant, providing the finishing touches in crucial moments.
Reflecting on Dhoni's transition out of the captaincy, Hussey shared that it was handled with the characteristic calmness and foresight that Dhoni is known for. "MS sort of announced that he was not going to be attending the pre-tournament captains' meeting. And we're like, 'Oh, no. What's going on?'. He said Ruturaj was going to be captain from then on. So, it was a little bit of a shock to start with, but it has been managed really well," Hussey recounted.
Under Gaikwad's leadership, CSK have performed admirably, currently sitting third on the points table and poised for a playoff berth. Hussey praised Gaikwad's calm demeanour and leadership qualities, noting, "He has done a great job. He has been really calm and measured on the field. He will just get better and better. The more he does it and the more support we keep around him. The pleasing thing is, it has not affected his batting at all either."
Dhoni's presence and guidance during this transition phase have been invaluable, according to Hussey. Harshal Patel cleaned up the former CSK skipper in the penultimate over but had a muted celebration. Despite the match being played in Punjab's home ground, the crowd went quiet.
Dhoni is striking at almost 225 in this IPL and was out for just the 2nd time. He was run out in the previous match.
What happened in CSK's innings?
Rahul Chahar's spin wizardry was complemented well by pacer Harshal Patel's superb variations at death as Punjab Kings produced a spirited bowling effort to restrict Chennai Super Kings for a par 167 for nine in the IPL here on Sunday.
At 60/1 in Power Play, CSK were going great guns with skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (32) and Daryl Mitchell in the middle during an entertaining 57-run partnership when the wily leg-spinner (3/23) triggered a collapse taking two wickets in two balls after PBKS opted to bowl.
The partnership was halted as CSK went on to lose three wickets in 11 balls with Harshal taking the prized-scalp of Mitchell (30; 19b, 2x4, 1x6) in a controversial DRS.
Harshal returned at the death to dismiss Shardul Thakur (17) and MS Dhoni for a golden duck as CSK's hopes for a revival went up in smoke.
First, he cleaned up Thakur with a slower off-cutter as the CSK fans in Dharamsala waited for yet another piece of Dhoni magic with eight balls to go.
But the Yellow Army left in disbelief as the talismanic Dhoni departed in the very first ball, unable to counter Harshal's impeccably executed slow yorker.
With no time to bring his bat down, Dhoni's off-stump was knocked over.
Earlier, veteran Ajinkya Rahane continued his wretched form with the bat and got out for nine from seven balls with Arshdeep Singh giving the breakthrough inside the Power Play.
Rahane lost his balance trying to flick a delivery on his leg to midwicket where Kagiso Rabada took a low catch.
But from thereon, Mitchell looked in complete control, returning to the same venue seven months after the New Zealander smashed a 127-ball 130 against India in the ODI World Cup.
He stepped on the gas in Arshdeep's second over, pulling him for a midwicket boundary and then lofted him over mid-off.
From being 10 off 11 balls, Ruturaj took the attack to PBKS' most economical bowler Harpreet Brar, smashing him for one six and two fours in a row as they ended up taking 19 runs off the last over of the Power Play.
Chahar turned it around for PBKS right after the timeout, dismissing Ruturaj and Shivam Dube in successive deliveries.
Having just picked up pace, the CSK skipper swung at a wide delivery but the big edge was caught splendidly by Jitesh Sharma behind the stumps.
Dube's run of golden ducks stretched to two matches after being picked for the upcoming T20 World Cup when the big-hitting allrounder was done in by a Chahar googly.
Dube failed to read the wrong'un and pushed the ball with an angled bat, and the edge nestled in the hands of Jitesh.
But a shocker followed to end Mitchell's stay.
The Kiwi fell victim to a contentious umpire's call even as the ball was going down the leg. But the UltraEdge showed that the ball was hitting the leg-stump, resulting in his leg-before dismissal.
Thereafter, CSK could not get a partnership going as PBKS bowlers kept chipping away.
