The Navy and Coast Guard have launched a massive rescue operation, with 11 Navy boats and three boats of Marine Police and a boat of Coast Guard being deployed in the area.

Two passengers died and 75 others on board a ferry were rescued after a speed boat crashed into it off Mumbai coast on Wednesday, officials said.
The Neelkamal ferry, with 80 persons and five crew members on board, was on way to Elephanta Islands, a popular tourist destination near Mumbai, when the speed boat circled it before crashing into it, a viral video of the accident shows.
A local leader claimed that the speed boat belonged to the Navy, but there was no confirmation from the Navy on this.
The Navy and Coast Guard launched a massive rescue operation, with 11 Navy boats and three boats of Marine Police and a boat of Coast Guard being deployed in the area, a defence official said.
Four helicopters were involved in the search and rescue operation, the official said.
Personnel from police, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and fishermen in the area are also involved in the rescue work, the official said.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the state assembly in Nagpur that search is underway for seven to eight passengers who are yet to be traced.
The speed boat, which is said to belong to either the Navy or Coast Guard, apparently lost control and rammed into the ferry, Fadnavis said.

Speaking about the incident, a fire brigade official stated, "The building was vacated earlier due to its unsafe condition, preventing any injuries or casualties. Our team, along with building department staff, is actively clearing the rubble."
The cause of the collapse has not been officially determined, but initial assessments point to the deteriorated state of the building. The visuals show passengers panicking as the electric vehicle (EV) ran amok, hitting vehicles and pedestrians on Monday night on a busy street in Kurla (west).&nbsp;
Some passengers tried to tightly hold on to the poles and grab handles, while others rose from their seats to fathom what was happening on the streets as the bus moved forward.
After the bus swerved to a halt, several passengers jumped out of the shattered windows.
A clip shows Sanjay More coming out of the bus cabin holding two black backpacks, and jumping out of a broken window on the left side of the bus.
The bus conductor got down from the rear side door.
The out-of-control electric bus operated by the civic-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking rammed into pedestrians and vehicles at around 9.30 pm on Monday on the SG Barve Marg in Kurla (West).
Besides killing seven persons and injuring 42 others, including four policemen on 'bandobast' duty, the accident also wrecked 22 vehicles.
The bus driver has been arrested for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and remanded in police custody till December 21.

Top officials of BEST and the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) held meetings on Wednesday with private operators who supply buses to government agencies under the wet lease model and affirmed to focus on driver training and taking extra safety steps.
BEST will also make breath analyser test mandatory for drivers in the wake of the Kurla crash.
At the meetings, the private operators were asked to provide details of training given to drivers, their appointment criteria, training infrastructure and modules, officials said.
Another meeting was held between senior BEST officials and the Maharashtra transport commissioner, who directed BEST to conduct an internal investigation and submit a report, which will be sent to the state government, an official said.
Under the wet lease model, the responsibility of providing drivers and carrying out maintenance of hired buses remains with private contractors. The state-run transport bodies, on their part, pay them a specific amount for the buses.&nbsp;

Victims and Response The deceased have been identified as Kannis Fatima Ansari, Shivam Kashyap, Afreen Abdul Salim Shah, and Anam Shaikh. Local residents rushed the injured to Bhabha Hospital, while emergency services, including the police and fire brigade, promptly arrived at the scene. Many of the injured are still receiving treatment.

Investigation Underway Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5) Ganesh Gawde confirmed the driver's detention and announced an inquiry to determine the cause. In other news, Mumbai&rsquo;s air quality showed signs of improvement. The Central Pollution Control Board&rsquo;s 4pm bulletin reported an air quality index of 112 across 20 of the 30 monitoring stations, with PM10 (particulate matter of 10 micrometers or less) identified as the main pollutant.

The administration of King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital, a civic-run facility, has issued show-cause notices to six staff members following the circulation of a video showing paper plates made from folders of patients' reports.
The video clip has prompted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to form a committee to investigate the incident, an official said on Saturday.
Former mayor Kishori Pednekar highlighted the issue on the social media platform 'X', sharing a video of the paper plates that appeared to bear the names of the hospital, patients, and medical procedures. She alleged "gross negligence" by the hospital administration.
In response, KEM Dean Dr. Sangeeta Ravat clarified that the plates were not made from patient reports.
"They are not patient reports. They are old folders of CT scans given to scrap dealers for repurposing. The only mistake was that these scrap papers were not shredded before being given away," Dr Ravat told PTI.
She said show-cause notices have been sent to six staffers.
The BMC has established a one-member committee led by the Deputy Commissioner (Public Health) to probe the incident. The civic administration has also sought an explanation from the hospital dean.
According to a BMC statement, patients typically receive their CT scan, MRI, and X-ray reports in paper folders. These old folders are subsequently given to scrap vendors. However, the concerned folders had not been shredded before being repurposed into paper plates.
The civic body indicated that the work assigned to the scrap vendor was not completed properly.
The BMC has issued memos to those responsible for overseeing the process.&nbsp;

A year after banning students from wearing hijab, Acharya and Marathe College in Mumbai's Chembur issued a new dress code banning jeans and T-shirts. This has come a few days after the Bombay High Court dismissed a plea filed by students of the college, challenging the college's dress code banning hijab.&nbsp;
The notice by the college mentioned that torn jeans, T-shirts, revealing dresses and jerseys are not allowed. It was signed by the Principal of the college Dr. Vidyagauri Lele. &nbsp; "Students should wear formal and decent dress while on campus. They can wear a half-shirt or full-shirt and trousers. Girls can wear any Indian or western outfit. Students shall not wear any dress which shows religion or cultural disparity. Nakab, hijab, burkha, stole, cap, badge etc shall be removed by going to common rooms on the ground floor and then only they can move throughout the college campus," the notice reads.&nbsp;
The college said that they are preparing the students for the corporate world. Principal of the college Dr. Vidyagauri Lele said, "We just want students to wear decent clothes. We have not brought in any uniform, but have asked them to wear formal Indian or western clothes. After all, they will be expected to wear those once they are employed."

Pegged at a cost of around 13,000 crore rupees, the coastal road is a high speed corridor that will connect The Bandra-Worli Sea Link with Marine Drive through a series of tunnels, vehicular interchanges and bridges&nbsp;

Providing relief to residents of Mumbai, the second phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road project is scheduled for inauguration on Monday, with the north-bound carriageway from Marine Drive up to Haji Ali set to open to traffic starting June 11.
The tunnel will operate from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, and will be closed on weekends for ongoing work. The new road aims to reduce travel time between south Mumbai and the western suburbs by 70% and decrease fuel consumption by 34%.

The project encompasses a 10.58-kilometer stretch connecting Mumbai and Worli, featuring an eight-lane road with a six-lane tunnel below. Designated lanes for buses will be marked on both the road and the tunnel.

IAS couple's daughter dies after jumping off building in Mumbai

A 27-year-old woman, daughter of an IAS couple, tragically ended her life by jumping off the 10th floor of a government residential building near the Mantralaya in south Mumbai early Monday morning, police said. Lipi Rastogi, a law student pursuing her LLB course in Sonipat, Haryana, took the drastic step at around 4 am when everyone else at the IAS officers' government accommodation near Mantralaya was asleep, they said.
A guard posted at the building informed Lipi's family after she was found lying unconscious on a motorbike parked near the premises, following which she was rushed to GT Hospital, police said.
Despite immediate medical attention at the hospital, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
A suicide note found in her room, which is part of the police investigation, indicated that Lipi held no one responsible for her decision.
Police have initiated an investigation, registering a case of unnatural death at the Cuffe Parade police station.
Police said Lipi was under immense pressure regarding her academic performance, leading to her distress.
Lipi's father, Vikas Rastogi, holds a prominent position as the principal secretary in Maharashtra's Higher and Technical Education Department, while her mother, Radhika Rastogi, also serves as a senior IAS officer in the state government.
This incident reflects a painful parallel to the loss suffered by another IAS family in 2017 when Milind and Manisha Mhaiskar's 18-year-old son met a similar fate by jumping off a high-rise in Mumbai.&nbsp;

Mumbai North West Shiv Sena MP Gajanan Kirtikar on May 3 said he will follow 'raj dharma' and will campaign against his son Amol, who has been fielded from the same seat by the rival Shiv Sena (UBT).
The two-time MP, denied a ticket for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, said he would seek votes in favour of Ravindra Waikar, who has been fielded from Mumbai North West seat by the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
Kirtkar, who sided with Shinde following the latter's rebellion and split in the Sena in June 2023, also accompanied Waikar during the nomination filing process earlier in the day.
Incidentally, Waikar was a close aide of Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray but shifted allegiance to the Shinde faction recently.
"I am in dharma sankat (deep quandary). But I will follow raj dharma as I belong to the Sena led by Chief Minister Shinde. I will start campaigning for Waikar," Kirtikar told PTI.
Kirtikar is a four time MLA and one of the functionaries of the Shiv Sena since its inception several decades ago.
