The Myanmar junta's second-in-command arrived in China on Saturday for an official visit, the junta's information team said, as clashes with ethnic minority fighters raged in the north of the country despite a Beijing-brokered ceasefire.
Vice-senior General Soe Win arrived in Qingdao in Shandong province where he will attend a "Green Development Forum" hosted by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the junta's information office said in a statement.
Ties between the junta and Beijing &ndash; a major ally and arms supplier &ndash; frayed last year over the junta's failure to crack down on online scam compounds in Myanmar's borderlands.
The compounds were staffed by citizens of China and other countries who were often trafficked and forced to work swindling their compatriots in an industry analysts say is worth billions.
Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing has not visited China since the 2021 coup that plunged the country into turmoil.
The Southeast Asian nation has seen widespread fighting since the military coup ended democratic rule.
Soe Win's visit comes following more than a week of fighting in northern Shan state between the military and an ethnic minority armed group that has shattered a ceasefire brokered by China in January.
On Saturday the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) told AFP its fighters were "surrounding" the town of Lashio, home to a regional military command.
Lashio sits on a major highway that runs from Myanmar's second city of Mandalay to China's Yunnan province.
Myanmar is a vital piece of China's Belt and Road Initiative, President Xi Jinping's flagship US$1 trillion project that includes maritime, rail and road projects in Asia, Africa and Europe.
But progress in Myanmar has been hampered by the conflict since the military seized power in 2021, sparking widespread armed resistance to its rule.
Last week former general turned president Thein Sein visited China, where he met with President Xi.

Eight people were injured as a Myanmar military plane crashed at the Lengpui airport on the outskirts of Aizawl on Tuesday, officials said.
The small plane had arrived to take back the Myanmarese soldiers who crossed over to India last week, following gunfights with an ethnic insurgent group, they said.
There were 14 people on the plane, including the pilot, and eight of them were injured in the accident, which happened around 10.20 am, officials said.
While landing, it overshot the tabletop runway of the Mizoram government-run airport and crashed. The impact of the accident was such that the plane split into two, they said.
The injured persons were taken to the Lengpui primary health centre for treatment, they added.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered an investigation into the crash, a state government official said.
"All incoming flights have been diverted. When flight services, incoming and outgoing, will resume is yet to be known. Hoping all passengers would be able to either fly in or fly out as soon as possible, especially people with medical emergency," she said.
The airport was immediately shut after the accident, another official said.
A total of 276 Myanmarese soldiers had entered Mizoram last week, and of them, 184 were sent back on Monday, officials said.
The remaining 92 soldiers were to be repatriated on Tuesday, they said.
The plane was supposed to take them to Sittwe in Myanmar's Rakhine state.
The 276 Myanmarese soldiers entered Bandukbanga village, located at the India-Myanmar-Bangladesh trijunction, in southernmost Mizoram's Lawngtlai district with arms and ammunition on 17 January and approached the Assam Rifles.
They fled to Mizoram after their camp was overrun and captured by 'Arakan Army' fighters.
The Myanmarese soldiers were taken to the nearby Assam Rifles camp at Parva, and later the majority of them were shifted to Lunglei, the official said.
They have been under the supervision of the Assam Rifles since then, the official said.
These 276 soldiers were brought to Aizawl over Saturday and Sunday, for their transport to Myanmar from the Lengpui airport.
The group, headed by a colonel, has 36 officers and 240 lower-rank personnel, officials said.
With the 276 soldiers who entered last week, as many as 635 Myanmar soldiers have fled to Mizoram after their camps were overrun and captured by ethnic armed organisations and pro-democratic forces over the last few months, officials said.
In November, 104 Myanmar army personnel were sent to the border town of Moreh in Manipur from different places in Mizoram by Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters, and then repatriated. Earlier this month, 255 soldiers were sent back via the Lengpui airport by Myanmar air force planes.

Around 416 Myanmarese soldiers crossed over to India following the situation arising out of the fighting between Myanmar's armed ethnic groups and government forces, and the Indian military is "closely watching" the unfolding developments, Army chief General Manoj Pande said on Thursday.
The hostilities between the two sides saw a rapid spike since November last year in several key towns and regions near the border with India, fuelling concerns in New Delhi over the possible ramifications for the security of Manipur and Mizoram.
At a press conference ahead of the Army Day, General Pande described the situation near the Indo-Myanmar border as "concerning" and said some of the insurgent groups are feeling the pressure in the frontier region of that country and attempting to enter Manipur.
"The situation across the Indo-Myanmar border is something that we are closely watching," he said.
Officials said all 416 Myanmarese military personnel have been repatriated.
The anti-junta groups have reportedly taken control of several key towns and military bases near Myanmar's border with India and the volatile situation has forced scores of Myanmarese citizens to take refuge in Mizoram.
"That (the situation along the Indo-Myanmar border) has been of concern to us. You are aware of the activities of the Myanmar Army and the ethnic armed organisations and PDF (People's Defence Forces) in the past couple of months," General Pande said.
The Army chief said the situation in Myanmar's border areas has forced 416 Myanmarese Army personnel to cross over to India, besides some civilians from that country taking shelter in the northeastern states of Mizoram and Manipur.
"The situation across the Indo-Myanmar border is of concern as we also have some of the insurgent groups who are feeling the pressure and are now attempting to come to our side of the border in the state of Manipur," General Pande said.
"That, combined with the situation in Manipur, is something we are keeping a close watch on," he added.
On the situation in ethnic violence-hit Manipur, General Pande said the deployment of Army troops is aimed at helping the civil administration.

"I would say they (the troops) have exhibited a lot of restraint," he said.
The Army chief also said 30 per cent of the weapons looted from security forces in the state have been recovered.
Efforts are underway to recover the remaining weapons, he added.
The Chief of Army Staff said India is also considering strengthening the fencing along the border with Myanmar.
"We have strengthened our posture, deployment on the Indo-Myanmar border. We have close to 20 Assam Rifles battalions which are deployed there," he said.
Myanmar has been witnessing widespread protests demanding restoration of democracy since the military seized power in a coup in February 2021.
The Myanmarese military has been using airstrikes targeting its opponents and those carrying out an armed struggle against the ruling regime.
Myanmar is one of India's strategic neighbours and it shares a 1,640-kilometre border with a number of northeastern states, including militancy-hit Nagaland and Manipur. Last month, India called for cessation of fighting between Myanmar's military and the anti-junta groups near the Indo-Myanmar border.

Airstrikes by Myanmar's military on a village under the control of the pro-democracy resistance in the country's northwest have killed at least 17 civilians, including nine children, local residents and a human rights group said Sunday.
The morning aerial attacks on Kanan village in Sagaing region's Khampat town, just south of the Indian border, also wounded about 20 people, they said.
Myanmar is wracked by violence that began after the army ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021. After peaceful demonstrations were put down with lethal force, many opponents of military rule took up arms, and large parts of the country are now embroiled in conflict.
The country's independent online media and the BBC's Myanmar-language service reported the air attack Sunday, but the military government denied responsibility, claiming that it was false news spread by Khit Thit Media, an independent online news service sympathetic to the anti-military resistance.
The report by the state-run MRTV television in its Sunday night news broadcast cited an unnamed official from the area as saying there had been no plane flying in the area on Sunday morning.
The military government in the past two years has stepped up airstrikes against two enemies: the armed pro-democracy Peoples Defense Force, and ethnic minority guerrilla groups that have been fighting for greater autonomy for decades. The two groups sometimes carry out joint operations against the army.
In response to accusations of abuses, the military government often accuses pro-democracy forces in the area of carrying out violent campaigns of terror. But analysts for the United Nations and non-governmental organizations have gathered credible evidence of large-scale human rights abuses by the army, including the burning of entire villages and displacement of close to 2 million people that has triggered a humanitarian crisis.
Sagaing region, near the border with India, has been a stronghold of armed resistance to the army. A district capital and two small towns, including Khampat, have been seized in the past few months by a coalition of resistance forces and the Kachin Independence Army, one of the stronger ethnic rebel groups.
A local resident who helped carry out rescue work told The Associated Press on Sunday that a jet fighter dropped three bombs on the village of Kanan, on the outskirts of Khampat, about 280 kilometers (170 miles) northwest of Mandalay, the country's second-biggest city, killing 17 civilians who were in buildings near the village school.
Most of the residents in Khampat town are from the Chin ethnic minority, the vast majority of whom are Christians, generally Baptist. Myanmar is largely Buddhist, led by the Burman majority. The ruling military identifies with a nationalistic strain of Buddhism that shows hostility to non-Burman and non-Buddhist populations, found mostly in the border areas where much of the current fighting takes place.
About 10 houses near the school were destroyed by bombs, said the resident who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was afraid of being arrested by the military.
He provided a possible explanation for the attack, noting that a ceremony had been scheduled for Sunday to mark the completion of combat training for new members of the resistance forces at another school in the village, and that might have been the intended target of the attack. He added that the bombing might have been the consequence of a tip-off by a military informer.
Another resident, who also spoke on the condition of anonymity due to security concerns, said nine of the dead were children and 20 other people were injured. He also provided AP with photos of the aftermath of the attack, including dead and wounded people and damaged buildings.
Salai Mang Hre Lian, a program manager of the Chin Human Rights Organization, also confirmed the number of the victims and charged that it was a deliberate attack by the military on the civilians and children at the school.
&ldquo;If the international community continues to allow war crimes to be committed like this, then they let themselves to be knowingly complicit in the violations of international humanitarian laws, including the Geneva Conventions and Rome Statues,&rdquo; Salai Mang Hre Lian said in text messages.
The military stepped up airstrikes after an alliance of three ethnic minority armed groups in late October launched a major offensive, seizing towns in the country's northeast, along with major border crossings for trade with China.
The resistance forces scored a major victory last week when it forced the army to give up the city of Laukkaing in northern Shan state near the Chinese border.
The independent Myanmar Pressphoto Agency and Shan media reported that at least five people, including three teachers, were killed Sunday in an airstrike on Namhsan township, which was captured last month by the Ta'ang National Liberation Army, a members of the Three Brotherhood Alliance that launched the October offensive.
