However, technical issues with the spacecraft forced an early return of the capsule to Earth&mdash;without the astronauts onboard&mdash;leading to significant delays in their planned journey back. 
Challenges with Return Timelines
Originally expected to return in February 2025, their return has now been postponed to late March or early April 2025. The delay arises from additional time required by SpaceX to prepare a new Crew Dragon capsule to accommodate the astronauts. NASA explored alternate options, including using a different SpaceX capsule, but ultimately decided to extend their stay until the new capsule is ready for launch.

After deeming Boeing&rsquo;s Starliner unsuitable for the astronauts' return due to persistent malfunctions and safety concerns, NASA partnered with SpaceX to adjust its Crew-9 mission. Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams is once again ready to fly into space on May 6 in a brand-new spacecraft, the Boeing Starliner. The liftoff is scheduled to take place at 8:04 am IST from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The 58-year-old will join fellow NASA astronaut Barry Wilmore, 61, on the Crew Flight Test mission. &nbsp; &nbsp; When seen from India, the launch will be conducted in the early hours of May 7. &nbsp;
"We feel very safe and very comfortable when this spacecraft flies. This is where we're supposed to be," said Williams during a press conference at Nasa's Kennedy Space Center.&nbsp;
During this 10-day mission, the duo will test Starliner&rsquo;s capabilities, paving the way for the spacecraft to begin operational crew flights to the space station.&nbsp; Nasa Administrator Bill Nelson said, &ldquo;This is a major milestone for the Commercial Crew Program and for Nasa, as we work to restore America's human spaceflight capabilities.&rdquo;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Subsequently, NASA will seek proposals for a demonstration mission to deploy the LTV on the Moon's surface, ensuring performance and safety validation before the Artemis V mission.

Retired Air Force general and veteran NASA astronaut Thomas Stafford died on Monday at age 93.

Astronaut Thomas P Stafford, who commanded a dress rehearsal flight for the 1969 moon landing and the first U.S.-Soviet space linkup, died Monday. He was 93.
Stafford, a retired Air Force three-star general, took part in four space missions. Before Apollo 10, he flew on two Gemini flights, including the first rendezvous of two U.S. capsules in orbit. He died in a hospital near his Space Coast Florida home, said Max Ary, director of the Stafford Air &amp; Space Museum in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
Stafford was one of 24 NASA astronauts who flew to the moon, but he did not land on it. Only seven of them are still alive.
&ldquo;Today General Tom Stafford went to the eternal heavens which he so courageously explored as a Gemini and Apollo astronaut as well as a peacemaker in Apollo Soyuz,&rdquo; NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said via X, formerly known as Twitter. &ldquo;Those of us privileged to know him are very sad but grateful we knew a giant.&rdquo;
After he put away his flight suit, Stafford was the go-to guy for NASA when it sought independent advice on everything from human Mars missions to safety issues to returning to flight after the 2003 space shuttle Columbia accident. He chaired an oversight group that looked into how to fix the then-flawed Hubble Space Telescope, earning a NASA public service award.
The Apollo 10 mission in May 1969 set the stage for Apollo 11&rsquo;s historic mission two months later. Stafford and Gene Cernan took the lunar lander nicknamed Snoopy within 9 miles (14 kilometers) of the moon&rsquo;s surface. Astronaut John Young stayed behind in the main spaceship dubbed Charlie Brown.
Apollo 10&rsquo;s return to Earth set the world&rsquo;s record for fastest speed by a crewed vehicle at 24,791 mph (39,897 kph).
After the moon landings ended, NASA and the Soviet Union decided on a joint docking mission and Stafford, a one-star general at the time, was chosen to command the American side. It meant intensive language training, being followed by the KGB while in the Soviet Union, and lifelong friendships with cosmonauts. The two teams of space travelers even went to Disney World and rode Space Mountain together before going into orbit and joining ships.
The 1975 mission included two days during which the five men worked together on experiments. After, the two teams toured the world together, meeting President Gerald Ford and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.
The two crews became so close that years later Leonov arranged for Stafford to be able to adopt two Russian boys when Stafford was in his 70s.
Later, Stafford was a central part of discussions in the 1990s that brought Russia into the partnership building and operating the International Space Station.
Growing up in Weatherford, Oklahoma, Stafford said he would look up and see giant DC-3 airplanes fly overhead on early transcontinental routes.
Stafford went to the U.S. Naval Academy where he graduated in the top 1% of his class and flew in the backseat of some airplanes and loved it. He volunteered for the Air Force and had hoped to fly combat in the Korean War. But by the time he got his wings, the war ended. He went to the Air Force&rsquo;s experimental test pilot school, graduated first in his class there and stayed on as an instructor.
In 1962, NASA selected Stafford for its second set of astronauts, which included Neil Armstrong, Frank Borman and Pete Conrad.
Stafford was assigned along with Wally Schirra to Gemini 6. Their original mission was to rendezvous with an empty spaceship. But their 1965 launch was scrubbed when the spaceship exploded soon after liftoff. NASA improvised and in December, Gemini 6 rendezvoused with but didn&rsquo;t dock with two astronauts aboard Gemini 7.
Stafford&rsquo;s next flight in 1966 was with Cernan on Gemini 9. Cernan&rsquo;s spacewalk, connected to a jet-pack like device, didn&rsquo;t go well. Cernan complained that the sun and machine made him extra hot and hurt his back. Then his visor fogged up and he couldn&rsquo;t see.
In all, Stafford logged 507 hours in space and flew four different types of spacecraft and 127 types of aircraft and helicopters.
After the Apollo-Soyuz mission, Stafford returned to the Air Force and worked in research and commanded the Air Force Flight Test Center before retiring in 1979 as a three-star general.
Stafford's Air Force duties not only had him run the military's top flight school and experimental plane testing base, but he was commanding general of Area 51.
Stafford became an executive for an Oklahoma-based transportation company and later moved to Florida, near Cape Canaveral.
He is survived by his wife. Linda, two sons, two daughters and two stepchildren, according to the museum.

&ldquo;We are in the sixth day of what was planned as an eight-day mission, and we're still receiving data from those instruments,&rdquo; NASA chief Bill Nelson said, as per BBC. The Odysseus is currently thought to be leaning at a 30-degree angle on its helium pressure tanks.
The lunar robot has already sent more than 350 megabits of data downloaded ready for analysis. Aerospace company Intuitive Machines said the descent, landing and navigation data will help improve landing in the future.
BBC reported that Odysseus was originally supposed to make a vertical descent, nearing the lunar surface at 1 meter per second. It came down three times its intended speed.

NASA Layoffs 2024: Federal budget cuts have dealt a severe blow to NASA, with the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) reportedly laying off 100 contractors last week. The impact is felt most acutely on NASA's ambitious Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission, which now faces significant scaling back due to financial constraints.
JPL director Laurie Leshin informed staff last week that NASA's allocation for the MSR mission could be capped at just $300 million this year. This amounts to slightly over a third of the 2023 budget, which stood at $822 million, and less than a third of the budget initially requested by the Biden administration.
Budget uncertainties had already plagued the MSR mission, with reports in June highlighting escalating costs. In October, NASA initiated a reassessment of the mission's architecture after an independent review board flagged the existing plan as having an "unrealistic" budget and schedule.
Beyond the MSR mission, JPL now faces broader workforce impacts. Leshin stated in an internal email, "Adjusting to such a large budget cut in one year will be painful," hinting at the likelihood of layoffs. NASA has directed JPL to curtail a pivotal project within the MSR mission, leading to a hiring freeze and a pause in the work on the Capture, Containment, and Retrieval System designed to bring Mars samples back to Earth.
The MSR mission, a joint effort with the European Space Agency, involves sending samples collected by NASA's Perseverance rover into Martian orbit. A separate spacecraft would then retrieve these samples for return to Earth in the early to mid-2030s.
Lawmakers have expressed dissatisfaction with the cuts, with Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) criticizing NASA's decision to reduce funding for the MSR mission before the completion of the appropriations process. Despite these setbacks, lawmakers overseeing NASA's budget have allocated the requested $7.91 billion for the agency's Moon-related initiatives for the current fiscal year. A NASA astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts returned to Earth on Wednesday after being stuck in space for just over a year. American Frank Rubio set a record for the longest US spaceflight &mdash; a result of the extended stay.
The trio landed in a remote area of Kazakhstan, descending in a Soyuz capsule that was rushed up as a replacement after their original ride was hit by space junk and lost all its coolant while docked to the International Space Station.
What should have been a 180-day mission turned into a 371-day stay. Rubio spent more than two weeks longer in space than Mark Vande Hei, who held NASA's previous endurance record for a single spaceflight.
Russia holds the world record of 437 days, set in the mid-1990s.
The Soyuz capsule that brought Rubio and cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin back was a replacement launched in February. Russian engineers suspect a piece of space junk pierced the radiator of their original capsule late last year, midway through what should have been a six-month mission.
Engineers worried that without cooling, the capsule's electronics and any occupants could overheat to dangerous levels, so the craft returned empty.
There wasn't another Soyuz to launch a fresh crew until this month. Their replacements finally arrived nearly two weeks ago.
&ldquo;No one deserves to go home to their families more than you,&rdquo; the space station's new commander, Denmark's Andreas Mogensen, said earlier this week.
Prokopyev told ground controllers throughout the descent that all three were feeling good. They experienced more than four times the force of gravity as their capsule streaked through the atmosphere and came to a touchdown in the barren Kazakh steppes, ending up on its side. Helicopters moved in with recovery crews to fetch the astronauts.
&ldquo;It's good to be home,&rdquo; Rubio said after being pulled from the capsule.
Rubio, 47, an Army doctor and helicopter pilot, said at a news conference last week that he never would have agreed to a full year in space if asked at the outset. He ended up missing important family milestones including the oldest of his four children finishing her first year at the US Naval Academy and another heading off to West Point.
Rubio had said the psychological aspect of spending so long in space was tougher than he expected. He may hold on to this record for a while. NASA has no plans as of now for more yearlong missions.
It was the first spaceflight for Rubio and Petelin, 40, an engineer. Prokopyev, 48, an engineer and pilot, has now pulled two long station stints.
They logged 157 million miles (253 million kilometres) since launching from Kazakhstan last September and circled the world nearly 6,000 times.

The pristine samples are believed to be the leftover building blocks from the dawn of our solar system and will help scientists better understand how Earth and life formed.
Osiris-Rex rocketed away on the $1 billion mission in 2016. It reached Bennu two years later and, using a long stick vacuum, grabbed dust and pebbles from the small roundish space rock in 2020.
By the time it returned Sunday, the spacecraft had travelled 4 billion miles (6.2 billion kilometers).

NASA said Thursday that the study of UFOs will require new scientific techniques, including advanced satellites as well as a shift in how unidentified flying objects are perceived.
The space agency released the findings after a yearlong study into UFOs.
In its 33-page report, an independent team commissioned by NASA cautioned that the negative perception surrounding UFOs poses an obstacle to collecting data. But officials said NASA's involvement should help reduce the stigma around what it calls UAPs, or unidentified anomalous phenomena.
&ldquo;At this point there is no reason to conclude that existing UAP reports have an extraterrestrial source,&rdquo; the report said.
The 16-member panel noted that artificial intelligence and machine learning are essential for identifying rare occurrences, including UFOs.
NASA "with its world-leading experience in these aspects is well-positioned to play a leading role,&rdquo; it wrote.
At the one and only public meeting earlier this year, the independent team selected by the space agency insisted there is no conclusive evidence of extraterrestrial life associated with UFOs.
No top-secret files were accessed by the scientists, aviation and artificial intelligence experts, and retired NASA astronaut Scott Kelly, the first American to spend nearly a year in space. Instead, the 16-member group relied on unclassified data in an attempt to better understand unexplained sightings in the sky.
NASA said there are so few high-quality observations that no scientific conclusions can be drawn.
The government refers to unexplained sightings as UAPs versus UFOs. NASA defines them as observations in the sky or elsewhere that cannot be readily identified or scientifically explained.
The study was launched a year ago and cost under USD 100,000.&nbsp;

A yearlong NASA probe into hundreds of UFO sightings has found there was no evidence aliens were behind the unexplained phenomena, but the American space agency also could not rule out that possibility. On the very last page of the 33-page report, NASA panel noted that "there is no reason to conclude" that extra-terrestrial sources are behind the hundreds of UAP sightings it has investigated.
The report however noted that those objects must have travelled through our solar system to get to the Earth.&nbsp; Although the report did not conclude that extra-terrestrial life exists, Nasa didn't deny the possibility of "potential unknown alien technology operating in Earth's atmosphere".

American space agency NASA is all set to launch its own streaming platform called NASA+. NASA+ will not just feature live broadcast but also collections of original video series. NASA makes it more attractive by making the streaming platform free via the official NASA app on iOS and Android.&nbsp;
NASA+ will also be available on Fire TV and on the web across desktop and mobile devices. The original video series is expected to cover NASA's space missions along with new space contents.&nbsp;

Upon impact, expected on Tuesday, July 18, it could instigate a considerable geomagnetic storm on our planet.
<h3>Understanding Coronal Mass Ejections and Solar Flares</h3>
CMEs are immense, rapid clouds of magnetized plasma and solar radiation occasionally flung into space during solar flares.
These powerful sun-surface explosions occur when plasma loops near sunspots snap, akin to an overstretched rubber band breaking.
When these CMEs collide with Earth, they can cause geomagnetic storms - disruptions in our planet's magnetic field - leading to temporary radio blackouts and vibrant auroras, visible further away from Earth's magnetic poles than usual.
<h3>The Birth of a Cannibal CME</h3>
A cannibal CME takes shape when a secondary, quicker CME follows an initial one. As the second CME overtakes the first, it swallows it, forming a singular, gigantic plasma wave.
On July 14, our sun expelled a CME alongside a dark eruption - a solar flare containing unusually cool plasma that looks like a dark wave on the sun's otherwise blazing surface - from sunspot AR3370, according to reports from Spaceweather.com.
A larger sunspot, AR3363, released a second, faster CME on July 15.
<h3>A Cannibal CME Heading Towards Earth</h3>
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center's simulation indicates that the second storm will intersect the first CME, creating a cannibalistic cloud, with a high likelihood of it reaching Earth on July 18.
Both originating from C-class solar flares, these CMEs individually would be too feeble to trigger significant geomagnetic storms.
However, their collective size and velocity could potentially provoke a G1 or G2 level disturbance, the two highest categories for a geomagnetic storm.
<h3>Rarity and Impact of Cannibal CMEs</h3>
Cannibal CMEs are infrequent as they require successive CMEs to align perfectly and travel at certain speeds. Despite this, there have been multiple occurrences in recent years.
In November 2021, Earth experienced one of the first major geomagnetic storms of the current solar cycle due to a cannibal CME. Two more CMEs struck our planet in 2022, in March and August, but both only triggered minor G3-class storms.
Cannibal CMEs are more likely to occur during the solar maximum, a tumultuous peak in the sun's approximately 11-year solar cycle, where sunspot and solar flare numbers dramatically increase due to an unstable sun's magnetic field.
Scientists initially estimated the next solar maximum to occur in 2025, with less intensity than previous cycles. However, recent reports suggest that the sun's explosive peak could arrive earlier and with more force than expected.
The emergence of unusual solar phenomena like cannibal CMEs signals that the solar maximum is on the horizon.
<h3>Geomagnetic Storms and Their Effects</h3>
So far this year, Earth has already been hit by five G1 or G2 geomagnetic storms, including the most powerful storm in over six years.
These storms have caused the thermosphere - Earth's second-highest atmospheric layer - to reach its highest temperature in over 20 years. The number of sunspots is also rising as we near the solar maximum, hitting its highest total in nearly 21 years this June.
These solar developments underscore the dynamic nature of our solar system and the potential impact of solar phenomena, like the cannibal CME, on Earth.
Scientists from NASA, NOAA, and other organizations continue to monitor and study these events to better understand and predict their effects.
