Propelled by the popularity of titles such as &ldquo;Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar&rdquo;, &ldquo;The Great Indian Kapil Show&rdquo; and &ldquo;Amar Singh Chamkila&rdquo;, India has emerged as the third country in revenue per cent growth for streaming service Netflix in its second quarter.
The streamer released its second-quarter earnings for 2024 on Thursday evening and Indian content seems to have made significant strides this year alongside popular international shows such as &ldquo;Bridgerton 3&rdquo;, &ldquo;Baby Reindeer&rdquo;, Korean drama &ldquo;Queen of Tears&rdquo; and films such as &ldquo;Hit Man&rdquo; and &ldquo;Under Paris&rdquo;.
India and the UK have had especially strong slates this year, according to the streamer.
In Q2, India was the second and third country in terms of paid net adds and revenue per cent growth, respectively due to the success of titles like Sanjay Leela Bhansali&rsquo;s &ldquo;Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar&rdquo;, which had 15 million views to become the streamer&rsquo;s biggest Indian drama series ever.
Imtiaz Ali-directed biopic &ldquo;Amar Singh Chamkila&rdquo; with 8.3 million views was another major title for Netflix, which also registered success with licensed films such as Kiran Rao&rsquo;s &ldquo;Laapataa Ladies&rdquo; and Ajay Devgn-starrer horror drama &ldquo;Shaitaan&rdquo;.
From the UK, &ldquo;Baby Reindeer&rdquo;, which has earned 11 Emmy nominations, emerged as the big hit with 88.4 million views. &ldquo;The Gentlemen&rdquo;, &ldquo;One Day&rdquo; and &ldquo;Fool Me Once&rdquo; also spent multiple weeks on the streamer&rsquo;s global TV top 10 list.
During the company's earnings call with investors, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said "India's growth is a story that we see around the world playing out very similarly".
"So you look at the content, the product market fit is what drives our ability to attract members and retain members and monetise with them as well. I feel like what's going on in the quarter has been this ongoing build," he added.
Sarandos praised Bhansali for making "Heeramandi", a period drama series which featured Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Sharmin Segal.
"SLB is one of the most celebrated filmmakers in India, and he took on this incredibly ambitious series and brought it to screen on Netflix, directed every episode, and it's our biggest drama series to date in India," Sarandos said.
He further said the company's original films as well as the licensed content continue to thrill its subscribers.
"So we pick them well, we program well. We improve the product market fit. We improve engagement, we grow members, we grow our revenue. It's the same formula, I think everywhere we go. And there's certainly plenty of room to grow in India as long as we keep thrilling our audiences there," he added.
Netflix's upcoming line-up for India in 2024 includes non-fiction content such as &ldquo;Modern Masters feat SS Rajamouli&rdquo;, &ldquo;Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale&rdquo; and &ldquo;Yo Yo Honey Singh&rdquo;.
In the fiction space, the most anticipated returning titles are &ldquo;Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein&rdquo; season two, Taapsee Pannu-Vikrant Massey starrer &ldquo;Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba&rdquo;, &ldquo;The Great Indian Kapil Show S2&rdquo; and the third season of &ldquo;Fabulous Lives Vs Bollywood Wives&rdquo;.
Anubhav Sinha&rsquo;s gripping drama &ldquo;IC814: The Kandahar Hijack&rdquo;, &ldquo;Do Patti&rdquo;, featuring Kajol and Kriti Sanon, and "Vijay 69&rdquo; are some of the other projects from India to come out on the streamer this year.&nbsp;

The woman who claims to be the inspiration for Martha Scott in Netflix's hit series 'Baby Reindeer' has filed a $170M lawsuit against the streaming service. On June 6, Fiona Harvey filed the suit in the US District Court for the Central District of California, accusing Netflix of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, gross negligence, and violating her right of publicity.
Harvey is seeking at least $50M for actual damages, $50M in compensatory damages for &ldquo;mental anguish, loss of enjoyment, and loss of business,&rdquo; $50M for &ldquo;all profits from &lsquo;Baby Reindeer,&rsquo;&rdquo; and $20M in punitive damages.
&lsquo;Baby Reindeer&rsquo; follows Gadd&rsquo;s Donny Dunn, a struggling comedian who encounters Martha at the bar where he works. Martha is revealed to be a dangerous serial stalker who sent him over 41,000 emails, 744 tweets, 100 pages of letters, and 350 hours of voicemails over several years.
The lawsuit alleges Netflix &lsquo;did literally nothing&rsquo; to verify the statements in the series, which is presented as a true story, regarding Harvey.
&lsquo;It never investigated whether Harvey was convicted, a very serious misrepresentation of the facts,&rsquo; the complaint states.
&lsquo;It did nothing to understand the relationship between Gadd and Harvey, if any. It did nothing to determine whether other facts, including an assault, the alleged stalking or the conviction was accurate,&rsquo; the complaint states.
The series portrays Martha as a convicted criminal who spent five years in prison for stalking Gadd and another woman. She is also depicted as stalking a policeman and sexually assaulting Gadd.
Harvey asserts she has never been convicted of any crime and denies stalking or assaulting Gadd, physically or sexually.
Notably, Harvey&rsquo;s real name wasn&rsquo;t used in the series, which might complicate proving defamation.
This complaint follows Netflix settling a defamation lawsuit filed by Linda Fairstein, an ex-prosecutor who sued over her portrayal in &lsquo;When They See Us.&rsquo; As part of the settlement, Netflix agreed to move a disclaimer from the end credits to the beginning of each episode.

Reuters quoted Visible Alpha estimates and said the ad tier is expected to bring in some $188.1 million in revenue in the third quarter ended September, with subscriber additions of 2.8 million.

The role comes within the Machine Learning department and the streaming platform is ready to offer salary between $300,000 to $900,000. Users who have been using one account across multiple households will receive an email detailing the steps they need to take in order to continue using Netflix. The email will ask those users to transfer their profile to a new account and subscription.
The new restrictions will make it increasingly difficult for those outside the primary household to access a Netflix account.&nbsp;
This includes a need to enter verification codes for access for up to seven days, or connecting to the primary Wi-Fi network at least once every 31 days.&nbsp;
Netflix will be verifying devices in a household by tracking IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity.
Netflix has also announced that it will be rolling out paid sharing in various regions, although there is no word yet on if this option will be available to Indian users.

The submersible named Titan was diving 13,000 feet to view the shipwreck of the British passenger liner Titanic which had sunk in the North Atlantic Ocean in the year 1912.
Five passengers onboard died in a &lsquo;catastrophic implosion,&rsquo; US Coast Guard authorities confirmed, according to CNN report.
The passengers included British businessmen and adventurer Hamish Harding, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood from a Pakistan prominent business family, French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet and Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, who acted as the pilot for the Titan.

Netflix's $2.5 billion investment in South Korea is an "opportunity" for local business, the streaming giant's CEO said Thursday, as he played down a dispute with local internet companies over network usage.
South Korea is one of Netflix's biggest suppliers of television series and films, and boss Ted Sarandos said it was "investing for the long term" in the country, which has given the company global hits Squid Game and The Glory.
Outlining how the $2.5 billion -- announced in April in Washington while Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was on a state visit -- would be spent, Sarandos praised the "amazing partnership between the Korean creative community and Netflix".
"But I believe we're just scratching the surface of what's possible," he added, vowing to invest heavily in training South Korea's next generation of storytellers, in addition to boosting funding for original shows.
"We have to invest in their talent collectively as an industry. Between 2022 and 2025, for example, one in five Netflix titles in Korea will have come from a first-time writer or director," he said.
But South Korea's service providers have accused Netflix, which launched in the country in 2016, of free-riding on their networks -- paying the standard rate, despite the significant traffic congestion it has caused.
Netflix sued SK Broadband in 2020, asking the court to confirm that it has no obligation to pay network usage fees to SK Broadband.
However, the court ruled with the Korean firm, saying it was "reasonable" for Netflix to be "obligated to provide something in return". Netflix has appealed.
SK Broadband filed a separate suit against Netflix in 2021 arguing it should have to pay for costs from increased network traffic and maintenance work because of a surge in viewers for its content. The case is ongoing.
Sarandos said he wouldn't call the current legal dispute a "conflict".
"I would say that there's opportunity as businesses evolve. There's a clear, direct and symbiotic relationship between creative companies like ours and internet industries," the told reporters in Seoul.
"We've invested about a billion US dollars in developing this open connect system which improves and reduces the cost of delivery of bits around the world."
He stressed Netflix has about 18,000 servers across 6,000 locations in 175 countries that "make the internet move faster and more efficiently", and the investment will only continue.
"I'd say that the opportunity to work together to create a better consumer experience for the internet, for content, for general joy of consumers is something we should be doing together."
Over the past few years, South Korean content has taken the world by storm, with more than 60 percent of Netflix viewers watching a show from the country in 2022, company data showed.

As growth at Netflix cooled last year, the Silicon Valley-based streaming giant set out to nudge people watching for free with shared passwords to begin paying for the service without alienating subscribers.

The company had for the first time reduced subscription prices in the range of 20-60 per cent to suit the India market and deepen its penetration.
The countries where the over-the-top (OTT) player has slashed the price contributed less than 5 per cent to its total revenue during financial year 2022.
Netflix's global net income declined by about 18 per cent to USD 1,305 million in the quarter ended March 2023 from USD 1,597 million in the same period a year ago.
The revenue of Netflix, however, grew 3.7 per cent to USD 8,162 million during the reported quarter from USD 7,868 million in the March 2022 quarter.
