The New York judge presiding over Donald Trump's trial for allegedly covering up hush money payments linked to extramarital affairs ordered a delay Friday in proceedings that had been scheduled to get underway on March 25.
"Trial on this matter is adjourned for 30 days from the date of this letter on consent of the People," Judge Juan Merchan said in a court filing that will push the trial to at least mid-April.
The exact date will be determined at a hearing on March 25 which will also address complaints by the defense team about the disclosure of evidence ahead of trial, the letter said.
Prosecutors preparing to try Trump, the first former US president to face criminal prosecution, said Thursday they would accept a delay of up to 30 days after both sides received a deluge of case documents.
Trump, seeking a comeback as the Republican candidate in this year's election, is accused of covering up hush money payments related to his successful 2016 bid for the White House.
"An immediate adjournment is appropriate," Trump's legal team wrote on Thursday in a letter to the judge.
But it argued "30 days is not sufficient given the volume of recently produced materials and the nature of the ongoing disputes."
Prosecutors say Trump illegally covered up remittances to his longtime aide Michael Cohen to reimburse him for payments made to bury stories revealing Trump's alleged extramarital sexual relations with porn star Stormy Daniels and a Playboy model. He denies the charges.

"Studies show individuals experiencing loneliness had a 32 percent higher risk of dying early and we need leaders like Dr. Ruth to help address this critical component of our mental health crisis," she added.&nbsp;

A five-story floating jail in New York is set to be shut off, sending more than 500 prisoners to a facility in Rikers Island.

Docked in the shallows off an industrial edge of the South Bronx, the Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center is a five-story jail barge that stretches the length of two football fields, resembling a container ship stacked with cargo.
It arrived in 1992 as a temporary measure to ease overcrowding on Rikers Island, the city&rsquo;s main jail complex for detainees awaiting trial. Three decades later, the 800-bed lockup &ndash; believed to be the last operating prison ship in the United States &mdash; is finally closing down.
It will be fully vacated by the end of this week, officials said, as part of a broader plan to replace the city's long-troubled correctional system with a network of smaller jails. For now, most of the roughly 500 detainees incarcerated on the ship will be transferred to Rikers Island, according to the Department of Correction, though the jails there are eventually supposed to close down, too.
Detainees and advocates have long regarded the boat as a grim vestige of mass incarceration, an enduring symbol of the city&rsquo;s failures to reform dangerous jails that exist on the periphery of New York, largely out of sight of many residents.
In recent years, the unusual nautical jail has drawn attention primarily for its failures: last September, a 44-year-old man, Gregory Acevedo, jumped from the top of the ship to his death; the year before that, Stephan Khadu, 24, died after contracting a form of treatable meningitis while in custody.
Darren Mack, co-director of the advocacy group Freedom Agenda, described the boat as a warehouse used by the Department of Corrections to hold detainees, mostly Black and Hispanic men, with minimal oversight. While noting the closure was long overdue, he added, transferring the inmates from the boat to Rikers Island "is not a good solution... because that transfer is just shifting people from the frying pan into the fire."
The last of an armada of floating jails used by New York City in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Vernon C. Bain sits across the river from Rikers Island, between a wastewater treatment plant and a wholesale fish market.
Detainees are afforded a daily hour of recreation on a caged upper deck, where they were recently seen playing basketball on a sunny morning. Otherwise, their only natural light beams through the ship&rsquo;s tiny portholes.
Those who&rsquo;ve spent time on board say the boat rocks in the current. Its fading blue and white exterior &ndash; a far cry from the freshly-painted surfaces visible in the 1993 film &ldquo;Carlito&rsquo;s Way&rdquo; &ndash; is known to leak in the rain, occasionally short-circuiting the electrical system. Chunks of rust crack off the walls and ceilings.
Inside, detainees say they are packed into dormitories that grow suffocatingly hot in the summer, with cots that sit just a few inches from each other.
The use of maritime jails in the United States has long been controversial, dating back to the earliest days of the Revolutionary War, when thousands of Americans died aboard British ships parked in the New York Harbor.
Since then, the concept has been used sparingly &ndash; during the gold rush in California, most notably &ndash; often drawing allegations of cruelty and neglect, according to a recent study.
In the 1960s, a proposal by New York's correction commissioner to house inmates on repurposed ships was sunk by other local officials, who said the boats would give visitors the wrong image of the city. That sentiment began to change in the late 1980s and early 1990s, as drug arrests during the crack epidemic brought the population of Rikers Island to historic highs.
By the time the Vernon C. Bain arrived in the South Bronx, the city had already deployed four other floating jails &ndash; including two converted city ferries and a former trooper ship nicknamed the &ldquo;Love Boat&rdquo; &ndash; as low-cost, temporary facilities.
Mayor Edward Koch, an early champion of the idea, assured reporters that seasick inmates would be given Dramamine, dismissing questions about the boats&rsquo; viability by noting they were &ldquo;better accommodations&rdquo; than Rikers Island.
Stephan Khadu may have reached a similar conclusion as he awaited trial in a gang conspiracy case at Rikers Island. With the city's main jail complex gripped by both the coronavirus pandemic and rising violence in May 2020, Khadu volunteered to transfer to the Vernon C. Bain.
He later told his mother by phone that he would stare out the porthole of his new dormitory, pretending he was riding a jet ski in Miami.
But by the following summer, family members said, Khadu was complaining of the boat&rsquo;s stifling heat, mold and rodents that chewed through his food containers. He suffered a seizure in July of 2021. Two months later, he had a second seizure. He died on the way to the hospital, a few days short of his 24th birthday.
The cause of death was later revealed to be a complication of lymphocytic meningitis, a rodent-borne viral disease that, if properly treated, is not typically fatal.
His mom, Lezandre Khadu, blames the conditions on the boat.
"He didn't go in there sick," she said. &ldquo;There is nothing really to say other than that they didn't care.... it wasn't their son, it wasn't their husband, it wasn't their child."
The New York State Attorney General investigated Khadu&rsquo;s death but said they could not confirm allegations of improper care.
When the boat empties out, it won&rsquo;t be the first time. It closed in the mid-1990s, as the population of Rikers Island began to fall. But unlike the other shuttered floating jails, the Vernon C. Bain reopened &ndash; initially as a juvenile justice center under Mayor Rudy Giuliani, before later transitioning to a standard adult jail.
A spokesperson for the Department of Correction, Latima Johnson, declined to say what the city plans to do with the boat going forward. It will remain, for now, within the custody of the Department of Correction.

&ldquo;The reason for this move is to centralize operations on the island to more efficiently manage people in custody and deploy staff and resources,&rdquo; Johnson said in an email.
Once the move is complete, Lezandre Khadu is planning a trip to see the boat where her son spent the final year of his life. She intends to celebrate its long-delayed closure.
&ldquo;I am beyond pleased that that place is getting closed down where my son lost his life in the most horrific torturing way,&rdquo; she said.

An Indian man travelling from New York to Delhi in an American Airlines flight has been apprehended at the Delhi airport for allegedly urinating on his co-passenger, news agency PTI reported.

The carrier reported the matter to the Delhi airport before landing on April 23 and both the passengers involved were later handed over to the Delhi Police.

The accused Indian passenger was stated by the airlines staff to be under the influence of liquor and he urinated on his co-passenger during an argument, they said.
The incident took place on board American Airlines flight AA 292 and the alleged "unruly" passenger was apprehended by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) after the plane landed at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport around 9 PM on Sunday.
The victim passenger has filed a formal complaint with the airlines, the sources told PTI.
The carrier reported the matter to the Delhi airport before landing and both the passengers involved were later handed over to the Delhi Police.
A senior police officer said legal action has been taken in the matter under non-cognisable offences.
The police initiated the action after the complaint given by the airlines staff about the unruly behaviour of the passenger.
"There was no corroborative evidence or complaint given by co-passengers regarding someone peeing on them," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Airport) Devesh Kumar Mahla said.
Incidents of passengers allegedly urinating on co-passengers purportedly after consuming liquor have been reported in the recent past.

New York: 22 fire incidents sparked by E-bike batteries reported this year causing 2 deaths

Lithium-ion batteries used to power electric bicycles and scooters have already sparked 22 fires that caused 36 injuries and two deaths in New York City this year, four times the number of fires linked to the batteries by this time last year, officials said.
On Friday, Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said Mayor Eric Adams' administration is &ldquo;coming at this problem from every single angle,&rdquo; including working with the City Council and the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission on additional regulations for the batteries and educating the public on their proper use and storage.
&ldquo;These are incredibly dangerous devices, and we must make sure that members of the community are handling them properly and using them safely,&rdquo; Kavanagh said at a briefing on public safety.
Many of the fires blamed on the batteries have been caused by malfunctioning devices left to charge overnight and placed in a hallway or near a door where they can trap people inside a burning apartment.
Three children and an adult were injured this month when a charging battery started a fire in their upper Manhattan apartment at 1:30 am, officials said.
Fire Department Chief of Operations John Esposito said after the February 5 blaze that when the battery overheated and sparked a fire, "it blocked the egress out of the apartment, trapping the family.&rdquo; Kavanagh said the e-bike batteries &ldquo;present often an immediate inability to exit one's room or one's apartment or one's home.
So it's really critical that we work with all our partners up here in government around enforcement, around education, around combating the hazards that these present to citizens and first responders.&rdquo;

An Air New Zealand flight was two-thirds of the way across the Pacific Ocean when it had to make a U-turn and head back to Auckland. The flight landed back in New Zealand after more than 16 hours in the air.

A man driving a U-Haul truck swerved onto sidewalks and ploughed into scooter riders in New York City on Monday, injuring multiple people before police were able to pin the careening vehicle against a building following a mile-long pursuit through Brooklyn.
At least eight people were hurt, two critically. The driver was arrested. His son identified him as Weng Sor, 62, a troubled man with a history of violence and stints behind bars.
New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell described the driver's behaviour as a "violent rampage," but said there was no evidence of "terrorism involvement."
The truck sped through the Bay Ridge neighbourhood before police stopped it more than 5 kilometres away, near the entrance to a tunnel leading from Brooklyn to Manhattan.
Weng Sor's son, Stephen Sor, 30, told The Associated Press that his father had a history of mental illness and, until recently, was living in Las Vegas.
"Very frequently he'll choose to skip out on his medications and do something like this," Stephen Sor said in an interview outside his Brooklyn home. "This isn't the first time he's been arrested. It's not the first time he's gone to jail."

Katherine Aronova said she saw the U-Haul run a red light, hit a delivery worker on an e-bike in the middle of the road and drag him a short distance.
"His face was covered with blood. He was unconscious," and his shoes were scattered on the sidewalk, Aronova said. "The electric bicycle was destroyed completely."
A security camera video showed the truck clip a scooter, then swerve onto a sidewalk and nearly plough into a pedestrian, who dived to safety just in time. A police patrol car then followed the truck down the sidewalk at high speed.
"I was in shock and didn't know what was happening until I saw the police patrol was chasing it," a witness, Andrea Vasquez, said in Spanish. "Thank God that man saved himself," she added of the person who narrowly escaped.

Aerial video from news helicopters showed the truck on a sidewalk after the chase ended, its path blocked by a police cruiser. Authorities examined the vehicle to make sure it didn't contain explosives.
Sewell said a police officer responding to the incident was among the injured.
Bay Ridge, a melting pot of immigrants from Europe, Asia and the Middle East, sits just north of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge along New York Harbor.
It's popularly known as the setting of the 1977 John Travolta film "Saturday Night Fever," and as the home of the police commissioner played by Tom Selleck on TV's "Blue Bloods." Each fall, it hosts a leg of the New York City Marathon.
Stephen Sor described his relationship with his father as "rocky," and said his father had a history of mental illness, as well as not taking medications and acting out.
He said he didn't speak to his father often and was surprised when he showed up in Brooklyn in the middle of the night about a week ago.
"I try to just distance, as long as he leaves us alone," Sor said.
Weng Sor's criminal records date back nearly two decades.
In 2015, he stabbed his brother in Las Vegas and served about 17 months in a Nevada prison, according to court and prison records.
In 2020, he stabbed someone in the arm and chest with a knife and was sentenced to 364 days in county jail, with about 10 months of time already served.
Before pleading guilty in that case, Sor underwent several months of evaluations at state psychiatric facilities until he was found competent to face charges, court records show. The records don't list a possible diagnosis, but note that Sor was placed on medications.
In an earlier Nevada case, Sor was ordered to undergo counselling and perform community service after pleading guilty to misdemeanour battery in 2005.
The judge noted that he was soon moving to New York and ordered him to submit to a mental health evaluation once there.

In her complaint to the Delhi Police and the Civil Air, Meenakshi Sengupta said that she had also requested for wheelchair assistance to her seat, "I was also wearing a brace which was visible to everyone and they would know that I have some discomfort...because I CANNOT carry any weight in my hands at all and I'm weak from the surgery and don't need to strain myself by walking a lot." She said, "The ground staff was very supportive and helped me get into the aircraft and put my handbag on the side of the seat. Once inside the flight, I had a conversation with the air hostess and I explained my health condition to them...None of them mentioned about putting my handbag away. After the flight was about to take off, cabin lights were dimmed. At that time an air hostess came to put my hand bag in the overhead compartment. I requested her to help me put it but she refused to do so and told me it's not her job to do.

The incident also went viral on social media, and people urging the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) to take note of the matter.
Meanwhile, India's regulator- the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken cognisance of the case and asked American Airlines to submit its report.
The airline, in its official statement, said that its Customer Relations team has reached out to Sengupta to refund the unused portion of her ticket.

The unusual mortality rate of humpback whales along the eastern shores has been in news since 2016. About 178 dead humpback whales have been found on shores from Florida to Maine, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The US agency also found that 40% of deaths were due to human interactions such as getting caught in fishing gear or being struck by ships.

While she has filed for legal action in New York under the state's Adult Survivors Act, she has not provided any date for the attack. However, she said that the incident took place in the early 1990s, when the 56-year-old was also accused of raping beauty pageant contestant Desiree Washington. Tyson was convicted of raping Washington on Feb. 10, 1992, and served three years in prison.

Nearly two months after the urination incident on its New York-New Delhi flight, Air India on Tuesday said it has closed the internal probe into the case and will assist the flight's pilot-in-command with an appeal against the suspension of his license by DGCA as the airline deems the action as "excessive".
Last week, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) suspended the license of the pilot for three months, imposed a penalty of Rs 30 lakh on Air India and Rs 3 lakh on the director of the airline's in-flight services related to the urination incident that happened on November 26, 2022.
Tata group-owned Air India on Tuesday said it has closed the internal investigation into the actions of its crew operating and administrative staff supporting the AI 102 (New York-New Delhi) on November 26, 2022.
In a statement, the airline said it accepts that, notwithstanding the mitigating circumstances, based on the letter of the CAR (Civil Aviation Requirement) it did not correctly classify the incident and therefore did not report it as required.
"The crew and ground staff have been issued warning letters to henceforth adhere strictly to CAR definition of 'unruly' when reporting incidents onboard so that later investigation can assess the facts. The cabin crew and ground staff have been counselled and have since returned to duty," it said.
