This year, amid a contest between 20 teams, the Kiwis are placed in Group C with Afghanistan, West Indies, Papua New Guinea and Uganda, of which Afghanistan and West Indies can prove to be a challenge.
Their real fight for the cup will begin if they qualify for the Super 8 and go on to encounter tough competition from the likes of India and Australia.
Chasing their maiden T20 World Cup title, the Kiwis have assembled a well-rounded squad with depth in all disciplines which is the prerequisite for tournament success.
The Blackcaps will be led by seasoned skipper Kane Williamson, playing his sixth T20 World Cup and fourth as captain.
New Zealand have depth and variety in their spin and seam attacks. The batting lineup also is experienced and deep, featuring both power and grit.
Tim Southee will lead the seam attack in his seventh Twenty20 World Cup, supported by Trent Boult in his fifth. Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson will make up the rest of the specialist pacers.

New Zealand's economy has fallen into a recession, according to official data released on Thursday. This amidst, a damaging cyclone fuelling a widespread downturn just months before a national election. Recession is announced when a country's economy contracts for two consecutive quarters.
Stats NZ signalled the economy had contracted 0.1% in the first quarter of 2023, after a fall of 0.7% at the end of 2022. While the GDP matched analysts expectations, it was well below the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's forecast of 0.3%. Following the release of data, the New Zealand dollar slipped 0.2%. As per Economic Times, New Zealand central bank is now expected to stop hiking the interest rates.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Four months before the country goes to the polls, finance minister Grant Robertson admitted that entering recession was "not a surprise".
"We know 2023 is a challenging year as global growth slows, inflation has stayed higher for longer and the impacts of North Island weather events continue to disrupt households and businesses," he added.
As per AFP, January flooding in Auckland and destruction caused by Cyclone Gabrielle in February both weighed on the economy. The government estimates it will cost up to NZ$15 million (US$9 mn) to clean up the damage caused by the extreme weather.
This is New Zealand's first recession since 2020, when the pandemic shuttered borders and choked exports. The country's economy is now at 6.7%. Agriculture, manufacturing, transport and services too declined.

The state of emergency for Auckland and surrounding districts was lifted on Monday morning. But Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown warned that dangerous conditions were forecast to return on Tuesday.
&ldquo;My team's current focus and our big worry is that some Aucklanders might think the worse is behind us, but it isn't,&rdquo; Brown told reporters.
Brown said up to 12 centimetres (almost 5 inches) of rain was forecast in some areas that were already waterlogged.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is raising money for a prostate cancer charity by auctioning off a transcript of a parliamentary exchange in which she called a political opponent an "arrogant prick".
Bidding for a framed copy of the document, signed by Ardern and the insult's target, political rival David Seymour, had reached NZ$45,500 (US$29,000) by Friday in an online auction.
New Zealand's premier was overheard muttering the insult following a heated exchange between the pair at a parliamentary session on Tuesday.
A microphone picked up an exasperated Ardern saying "he's such an arrogant prick" in reference to Seymour as she retook her seat after answering a barbed question from the MP.
Seymour, leader of the right-liberalist ACT party, petitioned the speaker of New Zealand's parliament for an apology by Ardern, which meant her comment was entered into the official record, known as the Hansard.
Ardern later texted an apology to Seymour, who came up with the idea of joining forces to raise money for charity.
"We are thrilled it's got such good support," Seymour told AFP Friday, with bidding due to close on December 22.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Ardern said she had signed the official transcript with Seymour "in the spirit of good sportsmanship and a good cause".

Seymour said the prime minister needed little persuasion.

He added he hoped the signed document would go "for a lot of money. It's a pretty unusual occurrence and a good cause".

Here's all you need to know about these drop-in pitches.

Using a drop-in pitch allows the stadium/venue to have a multi-purpose role. While the pitches are dropped in during the cricket season, these venues can be used for other sporting events as well as music concerts during the off-season.&nbsp;

'Drop-in pitch' - you must have heard the term while watching a cricket match that's taking place in Australia or New Zealand.
The T20 World Cup currently underway Down Under has once again drawn attention to these drop-in pitches.

So, what exactly is a drop-in pitch?
Like, the name would suggest, these pitches are not made at the venue itself but are dropped in. In fact, these custom-made pitches are prepared elsewhere, before they are put onto cement slabs and transported to their destination. These panels are then dropped a few inches deep into the ground, and the artificial turf is then rolled around it to level the surface.

Why are drop-in pitches used?
Using a drop-in pitch allows the stadium/venue to have a multi-purpose role. While the pitches are dropped in during the cricket season, these venues can be used for other sporting events as well as music concerts during the off-season.
For example - the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, Adelaide Oval and Eden Park in Auckland host a variety of sports, including football, AFL &amp; rugby apart from cricket. Once the cricket season is over, these drop-in pitches are taken out and away to allow other sporting events. Before the cricket season begins, they are once again put back in place.

Future of drop-in pitches These drop-in pitches are being used at Australian venues since 1996. Earlier, there were doubts about the quality since these pitches were made in steel casings and didn't have the natural variation that comes with the usual deterioration of the surface. In fact, they were deemed 'too flat' in the past.
But advances, both in terms of understanding the topography and the contents of the soil used, have enhanced the quality of the contest as well. It also allows the curator to modify the pitch as he/she deems fit, which would not have been possible with conventional tracks.
Due to these advancements, countries like Pakistan are now looking at using drop-in pitches at their venues to maximise their revenues through year-round events.

New Zealand's government on Tuesday proposed taxing the greenhouse gasses that farm animals make from burping and peeing as part of a plan to tackle climate change.
The government said the farm levy would be a world first, and that farmers should be able to recoup the cost by charging more for climate-friendly products.
But farmers quickly condemned the plan. Federated Farmers, the industry's main lobby group, said the plan would “rip the guts out of small town New Zealand” and see farms replaced with trees.
Federated Farmers President Andrew Hoggard said farmers had been trying to work with the government for more than two years on an emissions reduction plan that wouldn't decrease food production.
“Our plan was to keep farmers farming," Hoggard said. Instead, he said farmers would be raising prices “so fast you won't even hear the dogs barking on the back of the ute (pickup truck) as they drive off”.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said all the money collected from the proposed farm levy would be put back into the industry to fund new technology, research and incentive payments for farmers.
“New Zealand's farmers are set to be the first in the world to reduce agricultural emissions, positioning our biggest export market for the competitive advantage that brings in a world increasingly discerning about the provenance of their food," Ardern said.
Agriculture Minister Damien O'Connor said it was an exciting opportunity for New Zealand and its farmers.
“Farmers are already experiencing the impact of climate change with more regular drought and flooding,” O'Connor said. “Taking the lead on agricultural emissions is both good for the environment and our economy.” The liberal Labour government's proposal harks back to a similar but unsuccessful proposal made by a previous Labour government in 2003 to tax farm animals for their methane emissions.
Farmers back then also vehemently opposed the idea, and political opponents ridiculed it as a “fart tax” — although a “burp tax” would have been more technically accurate as most of the methane emissions come from belching. The government eventually abandoned the plan.
According to opinion polls, Ardern's Labour Party has slipped in popularity and fallen behind the main opposition National Party since Ardern won a second term in 2020 in a landslide victory of historic proportions.
If Ardern's government can't find agreement on the proposal with farmers, who have considerable political sway in New Zealand, it's likely to make it more difficult for Ardern to win reelection next year when the nation goes back to the polls.

A camping association, Responsible Campers Association Inc (RCAi) in New Zealand is seeking a change in the government's law by allowing people to poop in public places if they don't think that they are being observed.
The spokesperson of RCAi said that currently in section 32 of the Summary Offence Act a person will be fined for urinating or pooping in a public place if they believe they are not getting observed.

A man wounded four people in a stabbing rampage stopped by bystanders who brought him to the ground in a New Zealand city neighborhood Thursday, police said.
Police District Commander Naila Hassan said the attack in Auckland was random and the suspect was in custody. She said there was no indication the attack was a hate crime, as the victims were of different genders, ethnicities and ages.
“This was an extremely fast-moving incident, where our police staff responded quickly, apprehended the offender and prevented further harm to our communities,” Hassan said.
She said the victims all suffered moderate injuries.
People in the neighborhood began following and surrounding the man after he began his attack and one brought him down using a walking crutch, Hassan said.
“Members of the public that acted with extreme bravery,” she said.
She said the man had been carrying a large knife and suffered moderate injuries when he was apprehended, and had been hospitalized as a result.
