Wagner made his test debut in 2012 and was a key figure in one of New Zealand's most successful eras, helping the team win the inaugural World Test Championship in 2022. He moved from South Africa to New Zealand in 2008 and quickly established himself in first-class cricket with Otago province.
In recent years Wagner pursued a sort of leg theory of continual short-pitched bowling which was contentious among some fans but invariably produced results. New Zealand won 34 of the 64 tests in which he played.
His strike rate of 52 is bettered only by Richard Hadlee among New Zealand bowlers who have taken more than 100 wickets.
One of Wagner's most notable performances was in bowling New Zealand to a one-run win over England after following on at the Basin Reserve last year. Wagner took 4-62 including the final wicket of James Anderson which fell with England one run short of a winning total.
&ldquo;It's been an emotional week,&rdquo; Wagner said Tuesday. &ldquo;It's not easy to step away from something you've given so much to and got so much out of, but it's now time for others to step up and take this team forward. There were no immediate reports of damage, and no tsunami warning has been issued.

Emergency Management Minister Kieran McAnulty said the cyclone "has had major impacts across most of the North Island".
McAnulty signed the declaration at first light as emergency services struggled to cope, the minister also added that the emergency will last for seven days.&nbsp;
"This is a significant disaster with a real threat to the lives of New Zealanders," he told reporters in Wellington.
The state of emergency will apply to Northland, Auckland, Tairawhiti, Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Hawke's Bay.
High winds and heavy rain lashed the country's North Island overnight in what officials called an "unprecedented weather event".

Daylight revealed the severity of the disaster: roads eaten away by landslips and collapsed homes buried in mud, silt and a slew of storm detritus.
Falling trees smashed houses and flood waters blocked several roads, leaving communities stranded.
Local media reported some traumatised residents were forced to swim from their homes to safety. Hundreds of homes and residents have been evacuated, as per local reports.
McAnulty said more rain and high winds were expected Tuesday, further hampering rescue efforts.
"The emergency services are working night and day, but the unstable ground, flood waters and closed roads are making things hard."
Hipkins has promised an aid package of 11.5 million New Zealand dollars ($7.25 million) to help recovery efforts, but McAnulty admitted the cost of the clean-up was set to spiral.
It's been just two weeks since a record-breaking storm swamped Auckland, which is New Zealand's largest city, and killed four people.
This is only the third time New Zealand has declared a state of emergency -- the other two were the 2019 Christchurch attacks and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Much of Auckland ground to a halt as train services were canceled, libraries and most schools were closed, and authorities asked people to make only essential trips.
New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said the weather had made the start of the year "incredibly challenging&rdquo; for people in Auckland and other northern areas.
&ldquo;Extreme weather event has come on the back of extreme weather event,&rdquo; Hipkins said.
&ldquo;For families and businesses, I know that that has been just exhausting, and I want to acknowledge how hard many of them are doing it.&rdquo;
Air New Zealand canceled all domestic flights to and from Auckland through Tuesday morning, as well as many international flights.
Some international routes would continue operating, the airline said, although they might need to be diverted from Auckland.
The carrier also canceled domestic flights to and from the cities of Hamilton, Tauranga and Taupo.
In all, Air New Zealand canceled more than 500 flights.
More than 10,000 international customers had been affected, the airline said, with thousands still to be rebooked.

Gabrielle was expected to pass Auckland overnight Monday. Its windspeed was downgraded as gusts abated to about 130 kilometers per hour (80 miles per hour).
Weather forecaster MetService said there was a very high likelihood of &ldquo;extreme, impactful, and unprecedented weather" over many regions, with heavy rain, strong winds and large waves.

The T20I series decider turned out be a one-sided affair as Team India steamrolled New Zealand in the 3rd T20I and won the game by 168 runs. With that, the Men in Blue took the series 2-1.
Batting first, the hosts finished at a mammoth 234/4, courtesy of a fiery 126 not out by Shubman Gill.
It proved to be a completely different track when the Kiwis came out to bat as they lost half their side with just 21 runs on the board.
The visitors were eventually bowled out for a mere 66, their 2nd-lowest total in T20Is.
Interestingly, India lost the first match of a bilateral T20I series (min 3 games) on ten occasions. They ended up winning 7 of those series while two ended in stalemates, with their only defeat coming in New Zealand in 2019.

There was a time when he was criticised for not converting good starts into big scores but ever since the opening batter got the taste of a century in Tests in December 2022, there has been no stopping the man from Punjab.
Gill carried on his brilliant one-day form into the T20Is as he smashed his maiden T20I hundred off just 54 balls in the 3rd T20 vs New Zealand.
What made the innings even more special was the fact that the 23-year-old brought up his first-ever 3-digit score in the shortest format in the series decider.&nbsp;
Gill carried on and finished at an unbeaten 63-ball-126 and now has the highest score by an Indian in T20Is, going past Virat Kohli's 122 not out vs Afghanistan.
Apart from that, he is only the second Indian after Rohit Sharma to have an ODI double century &amp; a T20I hundred.
