S. Jaishankar emphasized a 'strong and fair' UN at Raisina Dialogue, critiquing international rule inconsistencies and the UN's role in Kashmir.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday stressed the importance of having an international order just like a domestic order.
He slammed the United Nations for making the Kashmir invasion a dispute and turning the attacker and victim at par and called for having a "strong and fair" UN. In his remarks at the Session on 'Thrones and Thorns: Defending the Integrity of Nations' at Raisina Dialogue on Tuesday, Jaishankar called the occupation of some parts of Kashmir by Pakistan "the longest standing illegal occupation" of territory by another country after the Second World War.
When asked about his earlier remarks, where he said, "If you don't have an order, then you are looking at a very anarchic world', Jaishankar responded, "Look, I think we do need an international order just like we need a domestic order.
Just like you need a society in a country, you need an international version of that and its not just big countries who will benefit if there is no order.
I would argue that any country which would take risks, which would have an extreme position, which would test the system will actually use the disorder to its advantage. I mean we have seen it in our own neighbourhood. You don't have to be a big country to be a risky country. I have smaller neighbours who have done a pretty good job.
So, first of all, we should all understand the importance of an order." "Now, the old order, it was an order, it was a product of its times.
But, why I felt its virtuals were exaggerated was I think the rule maker and rule taker had somewhat different perspective because I also said in the same interview that if you are at the receiving end of those rules or the application of those rules, we had issues and let me give you two or three practical examples.
You know, if you capriciously, you know, if it suits your interests, somebody is good, not good, well, I'll make up my mind how they're going to do and you apply that order to the same country on the same issues differently," he added.
He said that the Taliban was welcomed in the Doha process and Oslo. He stressed that when it suits to deal with the Taliban, it is okay and when it is not, it is called extremist.
"Take Afghanistan, so, the same Afghanistan, the same Taliban which was an outlier was welcomed in the Doha process, was welcomed in Oslo, apparently, at that time people were okay with it.
Today again we going back saying, Taliban is doing all these not so good things. Now, if they were doing all of that. what was discussed in Oslo and Doha. You know you had a British general who described them at that time as they are country boys with their own honour code.
Now, so when it suits you to deal with the Taliban, they are okay. When it is not, they are not okay. You are an extremist today, you wear a suit and tie, you are okay.
You know, I think I have a problem with that all," Jaishankar said. The EAM termed sovereignty and territorial integrity the "bedrock of global rules."
He also spoke on political interference, where he mentioned that when the West goes into other nations, it is "apparently in the perseverance of democratic freedoms." However, he noted that when other nations come into the West, it appears to have a "very malign intention."
Jaishankar said, "Let's give you a second example. We all speak of sovereignty and territorial integrity. All of us agree. It's a vital principle. It's a bedrock of global rules. After the Second World War, the longest standing illegal, I would say presence, occupation of a territory by another country pertains to India, what we saw in Kashmir. Now we went to the UN, what was an invasion was made into a dispute. So the attacker and the victim were put on par. Who were the culpable parties? UK, Canada, Belgium, Australia, USA. So, pardon me, I have some question marks on that one. Now, I can give you many more. We speak today of political interference. When the West goes out into other countries, it's apparently in perseverance of democratic freedoms. When other countries come into the West, it seems to have a very malign intention."
Calling for a strong and fair UN, EAM Jaishankar said, "So I think we need to have an order, there must be fairness. agree with you, Dominique, we need a strong UN, but a strong UN requires a fair UN.
A strong global order must have some basic consistency of standards. We have military crews to our east in Myanmar. They are no-no.
We have them even more regularly to the west. You know where? They seem to be okay. I think it's important to audit the working of the world for the last eight decades and be honest about it and to understand today that the balances, the share holdings in the world have changed. We need a different conversation. We need frankly in that sense a different order."
Slovakia's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Juraj Blanar, former Sweden Prime Minister Carl Bildt, Liechtenstein's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Education and Sport, Dominique Hasler, Fiker Institute Founder Dubai Abulhoul participated alongside Jaishankar in this session.
The Raisina Dialogue, which is being held in Delhi from March 17-19, is hosted by the Observer Research Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of External Affairs.

Mr. Chandan Grewal, Chair of Punjab Safai Karamchari Commission, urges President for a law to end contractual employment of sanitary workers nationwide.

In a significant move, Mr. Chandan Grewal, Chairman of the Punjab State Safai Karamchari Commission, has formally petitioned the President of India, Mrs. Droupadi Murmu, to address the longstanding issue of contractual employment among sanitary workers by advocating for the creation of a protective law.
In his letter to the President, Mr. Grewal commended her commitment to initiatives aimed at uplifting the weaker sections of society. He highlighted the persistent neglect faced by safai sewaks, the frontline workers responsible for maintaining public cleanliness, by successive central governments.
These workers, Mr. Grewal argued, have been overlooked despite their critical role in promoting health and hygiene across communities.
He lamented that the rights of these essential workers remain unprotected, a situation exacerbated by their employment under contractual terms.
Such arrangements, he noted, lead to their systematic exploitation, insecurity in employment, and insufficient wages. While acknowledging that Punjab has prohibited the contractual hiring of sanitary workers, Mr. Grewal pointed out the dismal conditions prevailing in other regions of the country.
He called upon the President to intervene and urge the Government of India to introduce legislation in Parliament that would abolish the contractual employment system for sanitary workers nationwide, thereby securing their rights and livelihoods.

Posting a picture of Gandhi walking with the girl wearing a hijab, Patra tweeted in Hindi, "When votes are accounted for on the basis of religion… then it is called appeasement." Tagging Patra's tweet, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate slammed the BJP leader and said he did not even spare a young girl.
"It's one thing to be rattled by the huge crowds in the (Bharat Jodo) Yatra - but to be blinded by hate like this. You are the pits!" she said.
Responding to Shrinate's tweet, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, "Worse than the pits." The Congress has accused the BJP of resorting to disinformation and falsehood on the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra', and said it shows the "fear" and "frustration" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the saffron party's leadership at the success of the yatra.

One person was killed and 11 others critically injured as two motorcycle-borne gunmen went on a rampage in Bihar's Begusarai district on Tuesday, firing indiscriminately at people in crowded areas, police said. 
The assailants are yet to be identified, they said.
The gunmen opened fire at Malhipur Chowk in Begusarai town on Tuesday evening, targeting shops in the busy area, a police officer said.
Panicked people started running for their lives, while shopkeepers fled leaving shops open.
The miscreants then went to Barauni Thermal Chowk, Barauni, Teghra, Bachwara and Rajendra Bridge, and continued firing at people, he said.
A 30-year-old man, Chandan Kumar, was killed and 11 others were critically injured in the mayhem, Superintendent of Police Yogendra Kumar told reporters.
Some of the injured were admitted to the government hospital in Begusarai, while others were sent to Patna for better treatment, he said.
Security has been beefed up in the district, and all the entry points have been barricaded after the incident.
"Investigation is underway. We will soon nab the accused," the SP added.

Thousands of UAE residents are making a beeline to get the first glimpse of the new Hindu temple in Dubai after its soft opening earlier this month.

The soft opening of the temple was held on September 1 with the temple management activating the QR-code based appointment booking system via its website.
From day one, the temple has been receiving a large number of visitors, especially over the weekends. The restricted entry has been regulated through QR-coded appointments for crowd management and to ensure social distancing, the report said.
The temple is open from 6.30 am to 8 pm.
Appointments for most weekends till the end of October have already been booked. The booking system will continue till the end of October after which members of the public will be free to visit the temple any time during its opening hours.
The only activity that is currently being done is the chanting of Vedic shlokas by a group of 14 pandits, who have specially come over from India.
This takes place every day from 7.30 am to 11 am and again from 3.30 pm till 8.30 pm. Visitors are allowed to take part in the chants.
Majority of the deities are installed in the main prayer hall that has a large 3D-printed pink lotus unfurling across the central dome.
Located in what is described as the ‘Worship Village’ in Jebel Ali that houses several churches and the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara, the temple has also installed the Guru Granth Sahib, the Holy Book of the Sikhs, in August.

Doctors and staff at government hospitals in Bihar&rsquo;s Patna were caught off guard when state Deputy Chief minister Tejashwi Yadav conducted a surprise check.&nbsp;
The young politician who is also the state health minister turned up wearing casual clothes past midnight to take a stock of conditions at the hospitals.&nbsp;
The hospitals where the deputy CM conducted surprise checks included PMCH, the state's largest government health facility, besides the hospitals at Gardiner Road and Gardani Bagh.
During his visits, Yadav was visibly displeased at the lack of cleanliness on the premises, poor availability of medicines and the apparent indifference towards their duty by those on the night roster.
He even pulled up Patna Medical College&rsquo;s superintendent who was all set to go to bed in his office during duty hours moments before Tejashwi Yadav arrived.&nbsp;
Notably, the health department had remained with the BJP for the entire period and Nitish Kumar remained an NDA ally.

Kumar also criticised efforts to form a particular narrative in news, education, and history.

Veteran actor Amol Palekar has been hospitalised at the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune. He is suffering from prolonged illness.
Amol Palekar, 77, is most known for his parallel cinema and television shows, with 'Rajnigandha', 'Chitchor', 'Gol Maal', 'Shriman Shrimati' and 'Chhoti Si Baat' being some of his most successful films. 
His wife Sandhya Gokhale told ABP Live that there is nothing to worry about Amol Palekar's health. He is recovering, and his condition is better than before. When asked about what he is suffering from, Sandhya said that this is an old illness. Due to excessive smoking, he was admitted to the hospital 10 years ago as well. But his condition is fine.

Out Of Breath: The Okhla Landfill

For years, residents of and around Delhi have witnessed mountains of waste popping up in different pockets of the region. Not only are these landfills unaesthetic to the eye, but they also assume the role of disease epicentres; hereby, risking the lives of neighbouring populations. Last month, we took you on a tour of the Bhalswa landfill and its unfortunate effects on local waste-pickers and residents.
The second part of the Out of Breath series explores the ground-reality of the Okhla landfill from an anthropological perspective. Nabina and Ohida examine the effects of the mountain on the physical, psychological and social well being of its neighbours. Among the worst affected by the resultant skin diseases, air-borne diseases and polluted water bodies are the nearby regions of Tehkhand and Tughlaqabad.
Although things do seem bleak based on this description, it should be noted that South Delhi Municipal Corporation has taken certain measures to reduce the negative impact of the landfill. As of July 2019, the height of the garbage mound had been brought down from 58m to 38m. Furthermore, the MCD had initiated the process of converting parts of the Okhla landfill into a green eco-park in March of 2018.
These numbers are definitely pleasing to hear, however, do these interventions have a genuine impact on the ground?
