Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday exuded confidence that India's automobile industry will rise to the number one position globally in the next five years and outlined his ministry's ambitious target to also reduce the logistics costs in India to 9 per cent over two years.
Speaking at the Amazon Smbhav Summit, the Road Transport and Highways Minister noted the remarkable growth of India's automobile industry, which he said has surged from Rs 7 lakh crore to Rs 22 lakh crore since he took charge of office.
"First is USA -- Rs 78 lakh crore, second-largest automobile industry is in China--Rs 47 lakh crore, and now India is at Rs 22 lakh crore. I am confident that within 5 years, we want to make the Indian automobile industry number 1 in the world," he said.
The minister said the presence of reputed global automobile brands in India is a clear indication of the country's potential.
He further articulated his ministry's target to reduce the logistics costs in India to a single digit within 2 years.
"The logistic cost in India is 16 per cent and in China, it is 8 per cent, in the USA and European countries, it is 12 per cent. The government has decided to reduce the logistic costs...in my ministry, we have the target that within 2 years, we will take this logistic cost to 9 per cent," he said.
Gadkari highlighted specific projects that will drastically cut travel times between major cities. He noted that the journey from Delhi to Dehradun, which currently takes about nine hours, will be reduced to just two hours by January 2025. Similarly, travel times between Delhi-Mumbai, and Chennai-Bengaluru are expected to decrease significantly, he said.
He then stressed the importance of adopting alternative fuels and biofuels and said using bio-ethanol in vehicles could lead to significant savings in fuel costs while simultaneously reducing pollution.
Gadkari also outlined plans to convert organic waste into hydrogen fuel and other valuable materials through advanced recycling technologies.
He pointed out that Delhi generates substantial municipal waste, with only 80 lakh tons currently being utilised.
"Our idea is to make hydrogen from the organic waste. By segregating the waste, we can get petrol, plastic, metals and glass. The recycling of all these materials available is possible.
And another technology is by which we can use this waste to get green hydrogen," he said.

Union roads &amp; transport minister Nitin Gadkari voiced his frustration at rampant violations of traffic rules despite steep hikes in fines because people are not taking it seriously.
Gadkari pointed out that enforcement alone can't bring down crashes and fatalities, along with enforcement, there is a need for a behavioural change on the roads.&nbsp;
The government has implemented Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to help enforce traffic rules and increased fines under the Motor Vehicle Act amendment of 2019. However, these measures haven&rsquo;t proven to be the deterrent they were expected to be.
While addressing the World Safety Conference, the Union Minister highlighted some statistics that paint a grim picture.&nbsp;
Road crash fatalities have increased by about 6% since 2019. From 1.59 lakh deaths in 2019, the number jumped to 1.68 lakh in 2022.&nbsp;
In 2022 alone, 50,029 people lost their lives simply because they weren&rsquo;t wearing helmets.&nbsp;
He also flagged the problem of mixed traffic on Indian roads and lack of lane discipline.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday once again asked Union minister Nitin Gadkari to leave the BJP if he was being "insulted", saying that the opposition in Maharashtra would ensure his victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
Speaking at a rally at Pusad in eastern Maharashtra's Yavatmal district, Thackeray said people like (former Congress leader) Kripashankar Singh, whom the BJP once targeted (over alleged corruption), figured in the saffron party's first list of candidates along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but Gadkari's name was missing.
"I had told Gadkari this two days ago, and I am repeating it again. If you are being insulted, leave the BJP and join the Maha Vikas Aghadi (alliance of Sena(UBT), NCP (SP) and Congress). We will ensure your victory. We will make you a minister when our government comes to power, and it will be a post with powers," he said.
Last week, responding to Thackeray's offer to Gadkari to contest as a candidate of the opposition, Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had mocked the Sena (UBT) chief, saying it was like a man in the street offering someone to make US president.
Gadkari was a prominent leader of the BJP, but the first list did not have names from Maharashtra as seat-sharing discussions between the BJP and its allies were not complete, Fadnavis had said.
Thackeray, meanwhile, termed the notification of the rules under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act as an "election jumla (slogan)." Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis and others coming to India (from neighbouring countries) are welcome but the timing of the notification was suspect as elections would be soon announced, Thackeray said.
It had been more than four years since the abrogation of Article 370, but no elections have taken place in Jammu and Kashmir and Kashmiri Pandits have not yet returned to their homes in Kashmir, he said.
The BJP should first bring Kashmiri pandits back to Kashmir and then implement the CAA, Thackeray said.
In the coming elections, there is the BJP which is creating enmity between religions and wants to change the Constitution, and on the other hand there is the INDIA bloc which is an alliance of patriots, he said, adding, "This election will be between `desh-bhakt' (those who love their country) and `dvesh bhakt' (those who preach hatred)." Prime minister Modi had not yet found time to visit the restive Manipur, he said.&nbsp;

Union minister Nitin Gadkari sent legal notices to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Friday for allegedly sharing misleading and defamatory news contents about him on X.
Gadkari's lawyer, Balendu Shekhar, said his client was shocked to know about, hear and see the contents and posts from the official handle of the Congress on the microblogging platform.
Kharge and Ramesh deliberately posted a 19-second video clip of Gadkari's interview given to "The Lallantop" web portal, concealing the contextual intent and meaning of his words, the lawyer said.
The notice said a sinister act has been committed with the sole intent and ulterior motive to fan and create confusion, sensation and disrepute to Gadkari in the eyes of public. It said it was also a futile endeavour to create rifts in the solidarity of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is poised to win the trust of people in the upcoming general election under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The notice further said Gadkari's interview was twisted, distorted and presented by uploading the video that is bereft and devoid of the contextual meaning.
The same has been done deliberately and consciously with a selected piece of Hindi caption that says: "Aaj gaon, mazdoor aur kisan dukhi hai. Gaon mein achhe roads nahi hai, peene ke liye shudh pani nahi hai, achhe aspatal nahi hai, achhe schools nahi hai -- Modi sarkar ke mantri Nitin Gadkari (Villages, labourers and farmers are unhappy today. Villages do not have roads, drinking water, good hospitals and schools -- Nitin Gadkari, a minister in the Modi government)." It said Kharge and Ramesh, in spite of being aware of the full contents of Gadkari's interview, wherein the efforts of the government were highlighted, deliberately posted the Hindi caption and the video clip by concealing the contextual meaning of the interaction to malign Gadkari's reputation.
"This legal notice is calling you to remove/delete the above mentioned post from your microbloging site 'X' forthwith and in any event, not later than 24 hours of the receipt of this legal notice, coupled with a written apology to my client within three days, failing which my client would have no other option but to take recourse to all such actions that are open to him, both civil and criminal, at your risk and expense," it said.

The project is being directed by Anurag Rajan Bhusari and bankrolled by Akshay Anant Deshmukh. It is presented by Abhijeet Majumdar.

The government will not make six airbags mandatory for cars, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Wednesday.
The government last year proposed to implement the six airbags safety norm from October 2023 for enhanced safety of occupants.
"We don't want to make six airbags rule for cars mandatory," Gadkari said at an event here.
Last year, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in a statement said that in order to enhance the safety of occupants of a motor vehicle, it has been decided to enhance safety features by amending the Central Motors Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989.
Airbags for both front seats are mandatory in vehicles manufactured on and after April 1, 2021. An airbag is a vehicle occupant-restraint system which interferes between the driver and the vehicle's dashboard during a collision, thereby preventing serious injuries.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday launched the country's first crash testing programme Bharat NCAP, which is aimed at improving road safety standards of motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
This is an important day for automobile industry and the society as it will improve the safety features of vehicles, the minister for road, transport and highways said in his address.
The Bharat NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) mechanism has been prepared in a systematic way keeping all stakeholders' view into account, he said.
The country is facing two challenges, namely road accident and air pollution. Every year around 5 lakh accidents take place in India and 1.5 lakh deaths due to these accidents, Gadkari said, adding Bharat NCAP is India's own crash testing programme which aims to improve safety features in the vehicles.
Bharat NCAP will be implemented from October 1, 2023.
Under the programme, car manufacturers can voluntarily offer their vehicles tested as per the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197.
Based on the performance of the car in the tests, the vehicle will be awarded star ratings on a scale of 0-5, for adult occupants (AOP) and child occupants (COP).
Potential car customers can refer to these star ratings to compare the safety standards of different vehicles and accordingly make their purchase decision.
It is expected that the demand for safer cars will increase, encouraging the car manufacturers to comply with customer needs, an official statement said.
"With high safety standards, Indian cars will be able to compete better in the global market, increasing the export potential of the car manufacturers in India. The programme is expected to develop a safety sensitive car market in India," the ministry for road, transport and highways said.&nbsp;

In Pratapgarh, Rajasthan, earlier on Tuesday, Nitin Gadkari marked the inauguration of construction on 11 national highway projects with a combined value of ₹5600 crore. Four national highway projects totalling 219 km and ₹3,775 crore were among them and were formally opened.

Air-conditioned cabins for trucks will soon be made mandatory, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Monday.
As drivers play a key role in the transport sector, which is one of the most important areas for India as the fastest growing large economy in the world, there is a need to address issues regarding their working conditions and state of mind, the minister of road transport and highways said here.
He was speaking at an event to unveil a book -- 'Desh Chaalak': A book honouring Indian Drivers.
Lamenting that truck drivers have been forced to work in extreme heat conditions, the minister said that he has been pushing for air-conditioned cabins for truck drivers for a long time.
"Some people objected to it saying it will increase costs...but before coming here I have signed on the file that henceforth, driver cabins in trucks will be air-conditioned," Gadkari said.
He stressed the need to improve the working conditions of drivers and also take steps to overcome the shortage of drivers by setting up more driving schools.
Due to the shortage, drivers in India are working 14-16 hours at a stretch while in other countries their working hours are fixed, Gadkari added.
With India emerging as the fastest-growing major economy in the world, he said logistics is very important and there is a need to reduce the cost of logistics in order to increase India's exports.
"Our logistics cost, as compared to the rest of the world, is 14-16 per cent. In China, it is 8-10 per cent, in European countries and the US it is 12 per cent. If we have to increase exports, we have to cut logistics costs," Gadkari said.&nbsp;

More than nine lakh vehicles, owned by central and state governments, transport corporations and public sector undertakings, that are older than 15 years will go off the road from April 1 and new vehicles will replace them, Union minister Nitin Gadkari said on Monday.
Addressing an event organised by industry body FICCI, Gadkari said the government is taking many steps to facilitate the use of ethanol, methanol, bio-CNG, bio-LNG and electric vehicles.
"We have now approved the scrapping of more than nine lakh government vehicles, which are more than 15 years old, and polluting buses and cars will go off the road and new vehicles with alternative fuels will replace them.
"This will further reduce air pollution to a great extent," the road transport and highway minister said.
According to a recent notification by the road transport and highways ministry, from April 1, all vehicles owned by central and state governments, including buses owned by transport corporations and public sector undertakings, that are older than 15 years will be de-registered and scrapped.
The rule shall not apply to the special purpose vehicles (armoured and other specialised vehicles) used for operational purposes for the defence of the country and for the maintenance of law and order and internal security, the notification had said.
