In a blistering critique, RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav accused Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of squandering a staggering ₹2.25 billion over just 15 days on promoting his image while the state grapples with severe governance issues. Yadav released a press statement on Tuesday, lambasting Kumar for what he termed as "wasteful spending" of public funds amid rampant unemployment, inflation, and corruption in the state.
Highlighting the alleged misuse of taxpayer money, Yadav claimed that the Bihar government is prioritizing propaganda over addressing the pressing needs of its citizens. "For 20 years, Bihar has been thrown into the flames of wild unemployment, mass exodus, murderous inflation, rampant crime, and institutional corruption by Nitish Kumar&rsquo;s wasteful spending spree," Yadav asserted.

The RJD leader questioned the state&rsquo;s priorities, alleging that students and women are being denied basic facilities while funds are being diverted for self-promotion. "There is nothing on the ground for students and women, but billions of rupees are being looted by officials for propaganda," he said.
Yadav also criticized the government&rsquo;s claims of progress, particularly the implementation of smart meters, as an attempt to mask administrative failures. He pointed to various issues, including widespread corruption, crumbling infrastructure, rising crime, unemployment, and the failure of the state's prohibition policy.
"The pain of livelihoods, hundreds of bridges destroyed due to corruption, uncontrolled crime, unbridled inflation, record-breaking unemployment, administrative chaos, and injustice cannot be concealed," he stated.
Tejashwi accused the government of indulging in what he described as an "election picnic" while the state's citizens suffer. "Nitish Kumar is spending ₹2.25 billion on dialogue around 'zero issues' instead of addressing the real problems plaguing the state," Yadav remarked, adding that the move reflects misplaced priorities and disregard for the welfare of the people.

Apart from Kumar, the national executive meeting was attended by Union ministers Lalan Singh and Ram Nath Thakur and other party leaders.
At the meeting, Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Jha was named as the party's working president. Jha is said to have a good equation with the BJP leadership.
The BJP ally also demanded stringent action against culprits in exam paper leak cases and called for a strong law to rule out such incidents in the future.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) on Tuesday came out with a theme song for the Lok Sabha polls seeking to project its septuagenarian president as one who could "march ahead and fight".
The colloquial Bihari number 'Badha badha ho, lada lada ho (march ahead and fight) Nitish Kumar' was launched at the JD(U) office here, in the presence of several senior leaders, including Bihar ministers--Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Ashok Chaoudhary and party's Rajya Sabha MPs, Sanjay Jha and Anil Hegde.
Party leaders also flagged off campaign vehicles that will be used by the JD(U) candidates in their respective constituencies during the campaign.
Encomiums are showered, in the song, on Kumar for taking charge of the state when it was "a crown of thorns", and "bringing back the honour that had been lost".
The song highlights the developmental works done by the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government in Bihar in the state. It also highlights the state government initiatives taken for the upliftment of women and raising the quotas for deprived castes from 50 to 65 per cent in state government jobs and educational institutions.
Talking to reporters, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, said, "With the release of this theme song, the party has formally launched our campaign for 2024 Lok Sabha polls in the state. The theme song highlights how our chief minister has turned dreams of youth and the general public into reality." Lok Sabha elections for the 40 seats in Bihar will be held in seven phases on April 19, 26, May 7, 13, 20, 25, and June 1.
As part of the seat-sharing arrangement in the NDA, the BJP is contesting on 17 seats, JD-U 16, LJP-R of Chirag Paswan five and the HAM-S of former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi and the RLM of former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha one each.
Of the 16 JD(U) candidates, six candidates are from Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and five are from Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs).

Nitish Kumar will be aiming at a fourth straigh term as an MLC of Bihar when he files re-nomination papers today

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is seeking re-election to the state legislative council, will file his nomination papers on Tuesday, a senior JD(U) leader said.
Kumar, who heads the JD(U), will be contesting for a fourth consecutive term in the Upper House, to which he first got elected in 2006, a few months after becoming the chief minister.
The JD(U) president's current term ends in May. However, the Election Commission recently announced biennial polls for 11 seats of the Bihar Vidhan Parishad, including the one held by the chief minister.
Of the 11 seats, the JD(U) held four, the largest number for any single party. However, in view of its diminished tally in the assembly, the party is conceding two seats to ally BJP which has grown numerically stronger.
JD(U) leaders said that sitting MLC Khalid Anwar was likely to be considered for a second consecutive term.
The BJP is yet to announce its candidates, though Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, who is also the party's state president, said, "We will contest four seats and leave one for our partner Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM)."
HAM is helmed by former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi, whose son Santosh Suman is a minister in the Nitish Kumar cabinet and happens to be among those whose legislative council term ends in two months.
In 2018, Suman had won the seat with help from the HAM's then ally RJD.
Two of the seats, for which elections are due, were held by the RJD's Rabri Devi, a former chief minister and at present the leader of the opposition in the legislative council, and Ram Chandra Purve, who is the deputy chairman of the the Upper House.
One seat was held by Prem Chandra Mishra of Congress.
Meanwhile, Samrat Choudhary cryptically added, "Seven is the minimum number of seats that the NDA will contest. If the need arises, we may fight for more."
The statement came in the backdrop of seven MLAs of the RJD and Congress joining the BJP, which has fuelled speculations that more may jump ship and join the ruling coalition.
Filing of nominations will come to a close on March 11, and the last date for the withdrawal is March 14. Voting is scheduled for March 21.&nbsp;

Chaudhary, who had refused to step down despite his party losing power a fortnight ago, was removed with 125 members of the 243-strong assembly voting in favour of the no-confidence motion moved against him by the ruling NDA.
Only 112 members voted against the motion.
Earlier, Deputy Speaker Maheshwar Hazari, who was in the Chair, had sought to declare the no-confidence motion as passed through voice vote, but agreed to a headcount following vociferous protests from the RJD.

In a show of solidarity, notwithstanding the sudden loss of power, a number of legislators belonging to the 'Mahagathbandhan', which comprises RJD, Congress, CPI(ML), CPI and CPI(M), have been staying at the residence of the coalition&rsquo;s leader Tejashwi Yadav, who lost the deputy CM&rsquo;s post as a result of Kumar&rsquo;s abrupt parting of ways.

The NDA government in Bihar, formed as a result of JD(U) president Nitish Kumar&rsquo;s latest volte face, will on Monday seek trust vote in the assembly where the numbers are stacked in its favour, but the opposition snaps at its heels.
The inaugural day of the budget session will commence with the Governor&rsquo;s customary address to members of the bicameral legislature after which the assembly will take up the no-confidence motion against Speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary before the trust vote.
Chaudhary, who belongs to RJD, the largest constituent of the 'Mahagathbandhan' which Kumar quit a fortnight ago, has made it clear that he will not step down despite the motion moved by legislators of the NDA soon after the new government was formed.
The NDA, which includes JD(U), BJP, former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi&rsquo;s Hindustani Awam Morcha and an Independent, has a combined strength of 128 MLAs in the 243-strong assembly, six more than the majority mark.
The absence of a few MLAs at the JD(U) legislative party meeting on Sunday and a couple of legislators at the BJP&rsquo;s two-day training workshop in Bodh Gaya, has provided cannon fodder to the 'Mahagathbandhan' which has been claiming that the NDA will fall short of 122 votes it must garner in order to remove the Speaker.
However, both JD(U) and the BJP have dismissed such misgivings, claiming all legislators will be present inside the House. However, leaving nothing to chance, the JD(U) put up many of its MLAs, after the legislative party meeting, at a city hotel.
Likewise, many BJP MLAs, upon return from the workshop, were asked to stay back at the residence of Vijay Kumar Sinha, who has taken over as a deputy chief minister.

In a show of solidarity, notwithstanding the sudden loss of power, a number of legislators belonging to the 'Mahagathbandhan', which comprises RJD, Congress, CPI(ML), CPI and CPI(M), have been staying at the residence of the coalition&rsquo;s leader Tejashwi Yadav, who lost the deputy CM&rsquo;s post as a result of Kumar&rsquo;s abrupt parting of ways.
Meanwhile, state BJP president Samrat Choudhary, who is also a deputy CM, has warned of &ldquo;stern action&rdquo; against any attempts at horse trading.
Nitish Kumar, who has been sworn in as the chief minister for a record ninth term, has also been closely monitoring the situation within the JD(U), having attended the legislative party meeting as also a luncheon held a day earlier which was seen as a warm-up exercise ahead of the crucial trust vote.&nbsp;

Less than a month after he returned to the BJP-led NDA, a coalition he has quit twice in a decade, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday asserted his latest realignment was going to be "permanent" and would last "for ever".
Kumar, who is also the JD(U) president, was talking to reporters in Patna after returning from Delhi where he had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda, among others.
"I have come back to the alliance where I belong, and from which I had been away for a while. Now I am going to be here for ever. Our ties will be permanent," claimed Kumar, whose latest volte-face has come as a blow to the opposition bloc INDIA, which he had helped form.
Notably, Kumar has been a BJP ally since 1996 when he was with the Samata Party headed by late George Fernandes. His first break up with the BJP was in 2013 when he quit the NDA in protest against the national ascendance of Modi, who was then the chief minister of Gujarat.
He realigned with the BJP in 2017, only to sever ties five years later, when he accused the party of trying to weaken the JD(U).
The longest-serving CM of the state, who has been demanding central help like special category status and a special economic package, was also asked if he received any assurances during his Delhi trip.
Kumar did not give a direct reply, but said, "I have been working for Bihar's progress since 2005. There is no cause for worry. Everything has been discussed." He was also asked about anxieties with regard to the trust vote his government would seek on February 12, with Speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary, who belongs to the RJD, refusing to step down despite a no-confidence motion moved by NDA legislators.
Kumar dismissed all the apprehensions, saying, "There is nothing to worry about. Everything has been discussed, within my party and also with our alliance partners." His key aide Sanjay Kumar Jha, a JD(U) national general secretary and former minister who had accompanied Kumar on the Delhi tour, quipped "it is a number game, after all".
In the 243-strong assembly, the NDA, which includes four MLAs of former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi&rsquo;s Hindustani Awam Morcha and an Independent, has 128 MLAs, six more than the majority mark.&nbsp;

A day after switching sides with the BJP, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday filed a no-confidence motion to remove Assembly Speaker and RJD leader Awadh Bihari Choudhary.
According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, the removal notice was submitted before the Bihar Assembly Secretary by BJP leader Nand Kishore Yadav.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&nbsp;&ldquo;I have served the notice, as the speaker, as per norms and established practice, has to be from the ruling dispensation. If the speaker resigns on his own, it is fine. Otherwise, it will be taken up for discussion after 14 days. It is as per procedure," Yadav was quoted as saying.
Though no name has been officially proposed to replace Choudhary, various media reports claimed that Yadav's name was being propped up for the post.&nbsp;

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said on Monday said Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's return to the NDA fold will not affect the opposition INDIA alliance and claimed the Congress was in favour of appointing Kumar as the convener of the opposition bloc.
Speaking to the reporters here, Raut dubbed Nitish Kumar as "Paltu Ram".
JD(U) president Nitish Kumar on Sunday took oath as the chief minister of Bihar for a record ninth time after a dramatic volte-face, ditching the Mahagathbandhan and the opposition bloc INDIA and forming a new government with the BJP, which he had dumped less than 18 months ago.
Raut said the way Kumar left the INDIA bloc is unfortunate.
"But if someone thinks that the exit of Nitish Kumar will create a rift in the national (INDIA) alliance, then it is not correct. In fact, the organisation gets tougher if such people leave, and the INDIA bloc will also become stronger," the Rajya Sabha member said.
"There is Tejashwi Yadav (of RJD who was the deputy CM of Bihar until Kumar walked out of the alliance), there is the Congress, and some other parties, and they will make the INDIA bloc stronger," he said.
Raut said "Nitish does not mean Bihar" and asked will people of that state like it if a person takes oath (as CM) multiple times in one tenure.
They do not know the real face of the BJP, and they (BJP) are going to finish Nitish Kumar, he claimed.
"It is the BJP's ploy...to finish Bihar's identity, but Nitish does not mean Bihar. In Maharashtra also they experimented with (Chief Minister) Eknath Shinde, but Shinde does not mean Maharashtra, or (Deputy CM) Ajit Pawar does not mean Maharashtra," he said.
Raut also said the Congress has no role in Nitish Kumar's exit from the opposition alliance.
"In fact, the Congress was in favour of appointing Nitish as the convenor of the INDIA bloc," he claimed.
"The Congress had discussions with us but at the same time information was coming that Nitish was having some secret deal with the BJP. In politics, everyone keeps information on everyone," he said.
Raut dubbed Nitish Kumar as "Paltu Ram" and asked how many times will he indulge in "volte-face".
"He should go to a circus. The circus will have acche din (good days). He should form a Paltu Ram circus and make the BJP its ringmaster," he said.
Asked about a rift among ministers in the 'Mahayuti' (ruling alliance) in Maharashtra over a notification on the Maratha reservation issue, Raut said if there is any rift over the decision, then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde should sack those ministers.
"If any minister is against the cabinet decision and the CM's decision, then such minister can be sacked," he added.
CM Shinde has announced that till Marathas get reservation, they will be given all the benefits enjoyed by the Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
A draft notification was issued recently by the government, stating that blood relatives of a Maratha person, who has records to show that he belongs to the agrarian Kunbi community, would also be recognised as Kunbi.
An agrarian community, Kunbi falls in the OBC category.
State cabinet minister Chhagan Bhujbal has criticised the government's move over the quota issue and questioned the "backdoor entry" of Marathas into the OBC category.

Meanwhile, Congress compared Nitish Kumar to a "chameleon", and said the people of the state will never forgive him for his "betrayal".
Lashing out at Kumar, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said it is clear that a "political drama" is being created in order to divert attention from the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
He said it is clear that the prime minister and the BJP are "scared" of the Yatra being undertaken by Rahul Gandhi, which is set to enter Bihar soon.
"Nitish Kumar, who frequently changes political partners, is giving tough competition to the chameleons in changing colours," Ramesh said in a post in Hindi on X.

JD(U) president Nitish Kumar on Sunday resigned as the Chief Minister of Bihar, saying "things were not working well" for him in the Mahagathbandhan he had joined less than 18 months ago and the opposition bloc INDIA.
Talking to reporters here after submitting his resignation to Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Kumar, who is likely to form a new government with the support of the BJP, said: "If the parties which were with me earlier agree to come together, you will get to know what happens next".
"I have submitted my resignation to the Governor. The government that was in place now comes to an end. I have let it go", said Kumar, who stopped briefly to talk to reporters outside the Raj Bhavan, which is a stone's throw from his official residence.
The 72-year-old leader indicated that he was not feeling happy with the way things were in the Mahagathbandhan in the state as well as the INDIA bloc that he helped take shape but which failed to adequately recognise his efforts.
"You all know how I came to this alliance and also how I worked to bring together so many parties. But of late things were not working well. It was not going down well with those in my party as well", said Kumar.
Earlier, Kumar held a meeting of the JD(U) legislature party, which authorised him to take any decision about the alliance.
According to the Raj Bhavan, Kumar has been asked to continue as caretaker Chief Minister till the formation of a new government.
The BJP is likely to come up with the offer of support and its national president Jagat Prakash Nadda, who is expected to be present at the swearing-in ceremony, is scheduled to arrive here around 3 p.m.
Kumar, however, did not reveal the cards saying:"The parties which I had earlier aligned with, if they come together again, things will take place. You all will get to know".
Kumar had joined the Mahagathbandhan in August 2022, when he had snapped ties with the BJP accusing it of trying to "split" his JD(U). He formed a new government with a multi-party coalition that included RJD, Congress and three Left parties.
In the current 243-member Bihar Assembly, JD(U) has 45 MLAs and the BJP 78. Kumar also has the support of one Independent member. Jitan Ram Manjhi-led Hindustani Awam Morcha, which is already a part of the NDA, has four MLAs.
The RJD (79) along with the Congress (19) and the Left parties (16) have a combined 114 MLAs, eight short of a majority.

State JD(U) president Umesh Singh Kushwaha made the statement, refuting rumours that his party, headed by the chief minister, was thinking of a return to the BJP-led NDA.
"All is well in Bihar's ruling 'Mahagathbandhan' and the media speculations are driven by some agenda", Kushwaha told reporters.
He also said, "I met the CM yesterday as well as today. It is a routine affair. There is no truth in the rumours doing the rounds. We also reject the rumours that party MLAs have been asked to rush to Patna".
