The Nobel memorial prize in economics has been awarded to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James A. Robinson for research into differences in prosperity between nations.
The three economists &ldquo;have demonstrated the importance of societal institutions for a country&rsquo;s prosperity,&rdquo; the Nobel committee of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.
&ldquo;Societies with a poor rule of law and institutions that exploit the population do not generate growth or change for the better. The laureates&rsquo; research helps us understand why,&rdquo; it added.
The announcement was made Monday in Stockholm.
Acemoglu and Johnson work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Robinson conducts his research at the University of Chicago.
The economics prize is formally known as the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.
The central bank established it in 1968 as a memorial to Nobel, the 19th-century Swedish businessman and chemist who invented dynamite and established the five Nobel Prizes.
Though Nobel purists stress that the Economics Prize is technically not a Nobel Prize, it is always
presented together with the others on Dec. 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death in 1896.

Bangladesh's official anti-graft watchdog Anti-corruption Commission on Thursday questioned Muhammad Yunus, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, involving charges of money laundering and fund embezzlement.
Yunus pioneered the use of microcredit to help impoverished people in Bangladesh&mdash;a model replicated in many other countries across the world. His legal troubles have drawn international attention, with many observers considering that they are politically motivated.
He emerged from Thursday's questioning session in the commission's headquarters in the nation's capital, Dhaka, saying that he was not afraid and he did not commit any crimes. Yunus' lawyer, Abdullah Al Mamun, said the charges against his client were &ldquo;false and baseless&rdquo;.
The commission summoned Yunus, chairman of Grameen Telecom, over $2.28 million from the company's Workers Profit Participation Fund. A dozen other colleagues of Yunus face similar charges in the case.
Grameen Telecom owns 34.20 percent shares of Bangladesh's largest mobile phone company Grameenphone, a subsidiary of Norway's telecom giant Telenor. Investigators say Yunus and others misappropriated funds from the workers fund.
In August, more than 170 global leaders and Nobel laureates in an open letter urged Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to suspend legal proceedings against Yunus.
The leaders, including former US President Barack Obama, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and more than 100 Nobel laureates, said in the letter that they were deeply concerned by recent threats to democracy and human rights in Bangladesh.
&ldquo;We are alarmed that he has recently been targeted by what we believe to be continuous judicial harassment,&rdquo; said the letter.
Hasina responded by saying she would welcome international experts and lawyers to come to Bangladesh to assess the legal proceedings and examine documents involving the charges against Yunus.
In 1983, Yunus founded Grameen Bank, which gives small loans to entrepreneurs who would not normally qualify for bank loans. The bank's success in lifting people out of poverty led to similar microfinancing efforts in many other countries.
Hasina's administration began a series of investigations of Yunus after coming to power in 2008. She became enraged when Yunus announced he would form a political party in 2007 when the country was run by a military-backed government and she was in prison, although he did not follow through on the plan.
Yunus had earlier criticised politicians in the country, saying they are only interested in money. Hasina called him a &ldquo;bloodsucker&rdquo; and accused him of using force and other means to recover loans from poor rural women as head of Grameen Bank.
Hasina's government began a review of the bank's activities in 2011, and Yunus was fired as managing director for allegedly violating government retirement regulations. He was put on trial in 2013 on charges of receiving money without government permission, including his Nobel Prize award and royalties from a book.
He later faced other charges involving other companies he created, including Grameen Telecom.

Yunus went on trial separately on Aug 22 on charges of violating labour laws. The Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments brought the case against Yunus and three other people in 2021, alleging discrepancies during an inspection of Grameen Telecom, including a failure to regularise positions for 101 staff members and to establish a workers' welfare fund.

&nbsp;The Nobel Prize in literature has been awarded to Norwegian author Jon Fosse for &ldquo;his innovative plays and prose, which give voice to the unsayable,&rdquo; according to the Swedish Academy.

The Swedish Academy on Thursday awarded the Nobel Literature Prize to Norwegian playwright Jon Fosse, whose plays are among the most widely staged of any contemporary playwright in Europe.
He was honoured "for his innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable," the Swedish Academy said.
His writing is defined more by form than content, where what is not said is often more revealing than what is.
Often compared to Samuel Beckett, Fosse's work is minimalistic, relying on simple language which delivers its message through rhythm, melody and silence.
His major works include "Boathouse" (1989), which was well-received by critics, and "Melancholy" I and II (1995-1996).
Fosse, 64, had featured widely in Nobel speculation for several years.
"His immense oeuvre written in Norwegian Nynorsk (one of Norway's written forms of languages) and spanning a variety of genres consists of a wealth of plays, novels, poetry collections, essays, children&rsquo;s books and translations", the jury said.
"While he is today one of the most widely performed playwrights in the world, he has also become increasingly recognised for his prose."
The Nobel Prize comes with a medal and a prize sum of 11 million Swedish kronor (about $1 million).
Last year, the award went to French feminist icon Annie Ernaux, known for her deceptively simple novels drawing on personal experiences of class and gender.
The Academy has long been criticised for the overrepresentation of Western white male authors among its picks.
The Swedish Academy has undergone major reforms since a devastating #MeToo scandal in 2018, vowing a more global and gender-equal literature prize.
Since the scandal, it has honoured three women -- Annie Ernaux, US poet Louise Gluck and Poland's Olga Tokarczuk -- and three men -- Austrian author Peter Handke, Tanzanian writer Abdulrazak Gurnah and Fosse.
Fosse will receive the Nobel from King Carl XVI Gustaf at a formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of the 1896 death of scientist Alfred Nobel.

Revellers are invited to walk around the 22 installations during Sweden's short winter days days.
Highlights include &lsquo;Wave Field&rsquo; seesaws that had faces lit up with joy over in Charles XII Square, and DNA and blood cell projections were placed in City Hall.
Co-curator of Nobel Week Lights Lara Szabo Greisman said the goal of the light festival is to connect the public with the prizes by bringing them &ldquo;into our everyday lives.&rdquo;
&ldquo;All of these were prizes that were awarded... for example, the LED was completely forgotten that this was a Nobel Prize,&rdquo; Szabo Greisman added.
Amid the current energy crisis, organisers have sought to reduce the consumption of main installation on the City Hall by 40%, and use LED technology to keep the festival as sustainable as possible this year.
55-year-old teacher Tuula Torro said she enjoyed walking with a mulled wine around the free installations.
&ldquo;This was just hilarious fun to sit on this seesaw, going back and forward. Haven&rsquo;t done that for 45 years,&rdquo; she said.

The Nobel Peace Prize that Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov was auctioning off to raise money for Ukrainian child refugees sold Monday night for USD 103.5 million, shattering the old record for a Nobel.
Previously, the most ever paid for a Nobel Prize medal was in 2014, when James Watson, whose co-discovery of the structure of DNA earned him a Nobel Prize in 1962, sold his medal for USD4.76 million.
Three years later, the family of his co-recipient, Francis Crick, received USD 2.27 million in bidding run by Heritage Auctions, the same company that auctioned off Muratov's medal Monday, on World Refugee Day.
Muratov, who was awarded the gold medal in October 2021, helped found the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta and was the publication's editor-in-chief when it shut down in March amid the Kremlin's clampdown on journalists and public dissent in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
It was Muratov's idea to auction off his prize, having already announced he was donating the accompanying USD 500,000 cash award to charity. The idea of the donation, he said, “is to give the children refugees a chance for a future.” Muratov has said the proceeds will go directly to UNICEF in its efforts to help children displaced by the war in Ukraine.
Melted down, the 175 grams of 23-karat gold contained in Muratov's medal would be worth about USD 10,000.
In an interview with The Associated Press before the auction, Muratov said he was particularly concerned about children who have been orphaned because of the conflict in Ukraine.
“We want to return their future," he said.
He added that it's important international sanctions levied against Russia do not prevent humanitarian aid, such as medicine for rare diseases and bone marrow transplants, from reaching those in need.
“It has to become a beginning of a flash mob as an example to follow so people auction their valuable possessions to help Ukrainians,” Muratov said in a video released by Heritage Auctions, which handled the sale but is not taking any share of the proceeds.
Muratov shared the Nobel Peace Prize last year with journalist Maria Ressa of the Philippines.
The two journalists, who each received their own medals, were honoured for their battles to preserve free speech in their respective countries, despite coming under attack by harassment, their governments and even death threats.
Muratov has been highly critical of Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea and the war launched in February that has caused nearly 5 million Ukrainians to flee to other countries for safety, creating the largest humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War II.
Independent journalists in Russia have come under scrutiny by the Kremlin, if not outright targets of the government. Since Putin came into power more than two decades ago, nearly two dozen journalists have been killed, including at least four who had worked for Muratov's newspaper.
In April, Muratov said he was attacked with red paint while aboard a Russian train.
Muratov left Russia for Western Europe on Thursday to begin his trip to New York City, where live bidding will begin Monday afternoon.
Online bids began June 1 to coincide with the International Children's Day observance.
As of early Monday, the high bid was USD 550,000. The purchase price had been expected to spiral upward, but perhaps not over USD 100 million.
“It's a very bespoke deal,” said Joshua Benesh, the chief strategy officer for Heritage Auctions. “Not everyone in the world has a Nobel Prize to auction and not every day of the week that there's a Nobel Prize crossing the auction block.” Since its inception in 1901, there have been nearly 1,000 recipients of the Nobel Prizes honouring achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and the advancement of peace.
The ongoing war and international humanitarian efforts to alleviate the suffering of those affected in Ukraine are bound to stoke interest, Benesh said, adding it's hard to predict how much someone would be willing to pay for the medal.
“I think there's certainly going to be some excitement Monday,” Benesh said. “It's it's such a unique item being sold under unique circumstances ... a significant act of generosity, and such a significant humanitarian crisis.” Muratov and Heritage officials said even those out of the bidding can still help by donating directly to UNICEF.

Paying homage to Rabindranath Tagore on his 161st birth anniversary, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday lamented that the bard's Nobel Prize, which was stolen 18 years ago, is yet to be found.
She maintained that this "failure" on the part of CBI is a "big insult" for the people of Bengal.
Expressing apprehension that the CBI might have closed the probe by now, she said, "It pains me to think that the Nobel could not be traced even after so many years. This (theft) happened during the Left Front regime. I do not know if any evidence still exists," Banerjee said during her address at a state government programme.
"It was the first Nobel we had received. And someone snatched it away from us. This is a big insult for us," she said.
Tagore was in 1913 awarded Nobel Prize in Literature for 'Gitanjali', a collection of poems.
On March 25 2004, the medal and citation were found stolen from the safety vault of Visva Bharati museum.
Banerjee said the great poet will live on through his work.
"Do remember that Rabindranath Tagore can never be forgotten. The Nobel Prize that got lost is inscribed in our hearts. There can be only one Kabiguru," Banerjee said.
Earlier in the day, TMC MLA Mangobindho Adhikari ruffled feathers when he said "boys of Bengal" had stolen the Nobel to avenge the humiliation meted out to the bard.
The legislator, however, did not explain the rationale behind the statement.
Adhikari, later in the day, said that it was a "slip of the tongue".
Taking a dig at the CBI, he also claimed that the state police would have cracked the Nobel theft case by now.
Senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha said that the TMC government's "non-cooperation" with the central agency was to blame for the delay in investigation.
"The CBI would have completed its job by now. It was due to non-cooperation of the TMC government, the probe got delayed," he said.
Sinha also alleged that TMC leaders were involved in the theft, an allegation that was rubbished as "baseless" by the ruling camp.
"In none of the reports, the CBI ever claimed that there was any non-cooperation by the state government. The allegations are baseless and politically motivated," TMC state general secretary

Donna Strickland is only the third woman to win the Nobel prize in physics after Marie Curie in 1903 and Maria Goeppert-Mayer in 1963.
