Novak Djokovic retired injured after losing a gruelling first set of his Australian Open semi-final to Alexander Zverev, leaving his bid for a record 25th Grand Slam crown in tatters on Friday.
The 37-year-old Serbian great's upper left leg was again heavily taped after he hurt it in the quarter-finals and he called time after going down 7-6 (7/5).
He left the court to a mixture of boos and applause from the crowd as Germany's Zverev reached his first Melbourne final.
It means Djokovic has now gone five Grand Slams without winning the title he needs to surpass Margaret Court's 24 and become the all-time leader.
He failed to collect one for the first time in seven years in 2024 with his last coming at the 2023 US Open, casting further doubt on whether he will ever get past Court.
The defeat also deprived him of a 100th career title. Roger Federer (102) is the only player, man or woman, to reach the century mark.
Zverev's reward is a clash in Sunday's showdown with either world number one Jannik Sinner or American 21st seed Ben Shelton.
While the German has been a Grand Slam runner-up twice before, at last year's French Open and the 2020 US Open, he has never before been to the final in Melbourne.
Last year at the same semi-final stage he crashed to Daniil Medvedev in five sets after holding a 2-0 lead.
But he came into the season with renewed vigour after ending 2024 as world number two, winning more matches than anyone bar Sinner and back to his best after a horrific ankle injury.
Djokovic came into the clash with questions over his fitness after needing medical attention in his four-set quarter-final win against Carlos Alcaraz.
He said before the match he was worried about his physical condition.
But he has demonstrated remarkable powers of recovery more than once in his career and it didn't appear to hinder him initially.
He moved with his customary zip in an opening service game that featured a 27-shot rally and again in saving four break points as his serve mis-fired.
It was then Zverev's turn to save three break points and keep the match on serve at 2-2, with both players blowing hot and cold.
Another break point went begging for the German at 4-4, with Djokovic barely getting 50 percent of his first serves in.
It went to a tight tiebreak after which Djokovic retired.

A U.S. Open match that Novak Djokovic already expected to be difficult was threatening to become a toss-up as he struggled with his serve.

Djere was leading 4-2 in the second set when he appeared to be troubled by pain near his hip and was visited by a trainer later in the set. He finished that set, which lasted 69 minutes after the first one went 60, but didn't last much longer.
&ldquo;In the end, not the kind of finish that we players or crowd wants to see, but I think it's probably due to that physical battle that we had in the opening two sets,&rdquo; Djokovic said.
It was the 90th win at the U.S. Open for Djokovic, making him the first man to reach that total at all four Grand Slams. The 24-time major champion will play No. 28 seed Alexei Popyrin on Friday.
Djere was the only player to win a set against Djokovic at last year's U.S. Open, grabbing the first two in their third-round encounter before Djokovic rallied.
&ldquo;So I knew coming into the match that if I don't serve well, which was the case, I'm going to have to really grind and work for my points a lot,&rdquo; Djokovic said. &ldquo;That's what I guess caused the two sets to be played over two hours.&rdquo; Djokovic made only 47% of his first serves and appeared to be struggling physically himself earlier in the match, which was just his second since winning the gold medal in the Olympics.
Djere had two chances to break Djokovic's serve for would have given him a 5-2 lead in the second set. Instead, he wouldn't win another game, with Djokovic breaking to win the set when Djere yanked a forehand out of bounds.
&ldquo;All in all, of course, I have to be happy with the win,&rdquo; Djokovic said, &ldquo;and happy that in important moments I managed to play one ball more than him over the net, I guess find the right shots or anticipate well as I did in the set point in the second set.&rdquo;&nbsp;

It was Djokovic's first match since accidentally getting knocked on the head by a water bottle while signing autographs after his opening win on Friday.
Djokovic started off with a double-fault and it didn't get much better for the six-time Rome champion.
Top-ranked Djokovic lost his first two service games and went on to lose the match 6-2, 6-3 in just 68 minutes, handing Tabilo the victory when he double-faulted &ndash; his fifth of the match &ndash; and the boos rang out at the Foro Italico.
The third-round loss marked Djokovic's worst performance at the Italian Open. He had lost only once before to an opponent outside the top 10 at Rome, where he had never gone out before the quarterfinals.
Djokovic followed Nadal with an early exit after the record 10-time Rome champion lost his third round match to Hubert Hurkacz 6-1, 6-3 on Saturday.
After the match, Djoker said, 'Congratulations to my opponent. Its the first time I faced him. Great player, you know, really, quality player all round game. Yeah, I just yeah wasn't able to find any kind of, good feelings on the court, to be honest. You know, with striking the ball and just yeah, I was completely off.'
While Djokovic had said he was &ldquo;fine&rdquo; after the water bottle incident, it was an unusually off-key performance from the 24-time Grand Slam champion as he tries to step up his game on clay before attempting to defend his title at the French Open, which starts on May 26.

The hard bottle had apparently fallen out of someone's luggage in the crowd, according to the tournament officials.

Novak Djokovic looked sluggish at times and hit several unforced errors but raised his game on important points to advance to the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters.

&ldquo;I lost to him last year here. Similar circumstances" said Djokovic, who is playing in his first tournament since parting ways with former coach Goran Ivanisevic.
"I was a set and 4-2 up and then I lost the break and I must say it was in the back of my mind when I was serving at 4-2, 40-15. I lost the break of serve and I was like Oh no, hopefully, this is not a similar scenario like last year.' I'm really glad to overcome the challenge.&rdquo; Second-ranked Jannik Sinner also advanced to the quarterfinals with a solid 6-4, 6-2 win over Jan-Lennard Struff.
Djokovic has not played much this year and is 10-3 with his best result a semifinal run at the Australian Open. He is using the Monte Carlo clay-court tournament to fine-tune his preparations for the French Open next month.
Djokovic dropped his serve immediately and struggled to adapt to Musetti's variety of shots. The Italian produced some great drop shots, was solid from the baseline and his one-handed backhands put Djokovic on the back foot.
A turning point came in the eighth game when Djokovic broke after Musetti blew a 40-0 lead. The Serb broke again in the 12th game after Musetti hit a double fault to drop the set.
Both players struggled to hold their serves in the second set but Djokovic came out on top in the decisive points.
&ldquo;This is clay, obviously things can turn around very quickly,&rdquo; Djokovic said.
"A break of serve is not a big advantage on this surface as the other surfaces. We saw a little bit of a roller coaster in the second set. I'm just glad staying tough and aggressive in the right moments paid off.&rdquo; Djokovic won the title in Monte Carlo in 2013 and 2015. He has not advanced past the quarterfinals since his last victory at the Country Club nine years ago.
His next opponent will be Alex de Minaur, who beat Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-4.
Sinner will play against Holger Rune, who defeated Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (9), 3-6, 7-6 (2) in a three-and-a-half-hour match after fending off two match points at 5-6 in the final set.
It was Rune's second match of the day after he first completed a rain-delayed win against Sumit Nagal.
Earlier, Karen Khachanov advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time with a 6-3, 7-5 win over fellow Russian Daniil Medvedev.
Khachanov will next play two-time Monte Carlo champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, who beat Alexander Zverev 7-5, 7-6 (3).
Tsitsipas blew a 5-0 lead in the second set and failed to convert two match points before Zverev won five straight games. The Greek, however, regained his composure in the tiebreaker to improve his record against his German rival to 10-5.
Medvedev won his first clay-court tournament last year in Rome but still does not feel completely at ease on the surface. After his title in Italy, he lost in the first round to a qualifier at the French Open last season.
Khachanov hit 11 winners and limited his mistakes to just three unforced errors in the second set to produce his first win over a top 5 player this season.
&ldquo;First thing is to be consistent. I think lately my results have been better and better,&rdquo; Khachanov said.
&ldquo;Then to think how to beat the top guys and be at the top. These are the things that we have to keep in mind and keep working on. The win today gives extra confidence in my pocket to continue this tournament and to step into the clay swing.&rdquo; It was only his second win against the fourth-ranked Medvedev.
&ldquo;I lost a couple of tight matches to him on hard courts,&rdquo; Khachanov said.
&ldquo;On clay, I have not got a title yet but I have good results. Roland Garros two-time quarterfinals. Always winning matches but not winning the tournament. In a way, I think overall my results on clay are better than his, maybe, and mentally he said many times he does not like to play on it.&rdquo; Medvedev lost his temper near the end of the second set and was handed a point penalty after yelling at the chair umpire at the changeover. Khachanov started his final service game with a 15-0 advantage and concluded with a service winner.
Casper Ruud also made it to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Hubert Hurkacz.&nbsp;

It's becoming harder and harder, but I still love the sport and still have been competing at the highest level and still number one. 'When I feel that I am not able to compete at the highest level with the guys and be a contender for a Grand Slam title, then I'll probably consider going into retirement.'
'But that can change, obviously. I mean, a lot of things can change. I'm not a teenager anymore. I'm a father and a husband.
