In a tweet, NSE CEO Ashish Chauhan said that from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM, the NSE handled the highest ever number of transactions. 1971 crore, thats 19.71 billion orders and 28.55 crore, that's 280.55 million trades in a span of 6 hours and 15 minutes.

NSE reduces tick size for stocks priced below Rs 250, to boost liquidity

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has decided to introduce one paisa tick size for all stocks priced below Rs 250 from June 10, in a bid to enhance liquidity and improve price discovery by allowing for more precise price adjustments.
Presently, the tick size for these stocks is five paise, which will be reduced to one paisa.
"All securities (excluding exchange-traded funds) available in EQ, BE, BZ, BO, RL and AF series with security price below Rs 250 will have a tick size of Rs 0.01 as against the current tick size Rs 0.05. The tick size determined for securities in T+1 settlement will also be applicable for T+0 settlement (series T0)," NSE said in a circular.

Tick size is the minimum price increment between consecutive bid (buy) and offer (sell) prices. A smaller tick size allows for finer price adjustments and potentially more precise price discovery.
For instance, if a stock has a tick size of Rs 0.10 and the last traded price (LTP) was Rs 50, the next possible bid prices would be Rs 49.90, Rs 49.80, Rs 49.70 and so on. In this case, bid prices like Rs 49.85 or Rs 49.92 are not allowed, as they don't meet the Rs 0.10 tick size requirement.
The exchange said that tick sizes will be subject to review and adjustments every month, based on the closing price of the last trading day of the month.
In addition to changes in the Capital Market (CM) segment, the NSE has announced revisions in the Futures &amp; Options (F&amp;O) segment.
The exchange said that the stock futures will have the same tick size as applicable for securities in the cash market segment from July 8. Further, revisions in tick size will be applicable for all expiries -- Near-Month, Middle Month and Far-Month.
Last year, rival bourse BSE lowered the tick size for scrips trading below Rs 100 to 1 paisa from 5 paise.&nbsp;

The National Stock Exchange announced that it will not issue any new futures and options contracts for Zee Entertainment after the expiration of the existing contract.

NSE stated that Zee has been excluded from futures and options contracts based on "SEBI Circular Ref. No: SEBI/HO/MRD2/PoD-2/CIR/P/2023/171 dated October 16, 2023 and chapter 3.5 of Exchange circular No. NSE/FAOP/57264 dated June 23, 2023 regarding eligibility criteria of stocks. &nbsp;Accordingly, no contracts shall be available for trading in the above-mentioned security with effect from June 28 2024".
However, this would not affect the current unexpired contracts. These contracts in April, May, and June 2024 will remain open for trading, and new strike options will be introduced within these existing contract months.&nbsp;

NSE in its release said that these videos seem to have been created using sophisticated technologies to imitate the voice and facial expressions of Ashish Chauhan. It further cautioned the investors to not believe and follow investment advice of any such audio and videos.

Investors are hereby cautioned not to believe in such audio and videos and not follow any such investment or other advice coming from such fake videos or other mediums," NSE said in a release.
NSE is also taking measures to to take down these objectionable videos and are requesting the platforms to do the same.&nbsp;

The National Stock Exchange and Bombay stock exchange are planning to conduct a special live trading session on Saturday, the 20th of January 2024. There will be an intra-day switch over to a disaster recovery site.&nbsp; The specific timelines for these sessions are as follows. Both BSE and NSE's pre-open session begins at 9am, with market opening at 9:15am and closing at 10am. The disaster recovery site's pre-opening session will start at 11:15am, followed by normal market operations beginning at 11:23am, with the closing session at 12:50 pm. In the future and options segment, the market opens at 9:15am and closes at 10am. On the disaster recovery website, it opens at 11:30am and closes at 12:30pm. These special sessions aim to bolster the exchanges' resilience and preparedness for any unforeseen contingencies in the future. Quoting references to earlier directives from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and previous exchange circulars, the NSE has highlighted the importance of Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and Disaster Recovery Site (DRS) frameworks for stock exchanges and depositories.
The circular issued by NSE says, "Exchange shall be conducting special live trading session with intra-day switch over from Primary site to Disaster Recovery site on Saturday, January 20, 2024 in Equity and Equity Derivatives segments."

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) is reportedly planning to introduce extended trading hours for equity derivatives, as per an Economic Times report. The NSE is considering an evening trading session from 6 pm to 9 pm, allowing market participants to trade futures and options contracts after the regular trading hours from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm. There's also the possibility of further extending this session until 11:30 pm, according to an anonymous source mentioned in the report.
The motivation behind these longer trading hours is to provide Indian traders with the opportunity to react more swiftly to global events. Additionally, the NSE hopes to boost its trading volumes, as there have been concerns about major traders, including proprietary desks and hedge funds, shifting their activities to rivals like GIFT City, where trading is available 24/7.
The NSE has already submitted its proposal to the market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), and is awaiting approval. SEBI has previously established rules that allow exchanges to keep futures and options (F&amp;O) trading open until 11:55 pm and equity trading until 5 pm.

While some market participants, including prominent brokers, question the rationale behind the NSE's decision to extend trading hours, they believe it may not necessarily lead to increased trading volumes and could potentially raise costs and employee dissatisfaction.

&ldquo;We have already started the consultation with broker members on how to increase trade timings at least in a more convenient way for office-goers in the evening," Chauhan said after reporting the first quarter earnings on Friday. &ldquo;They (brokers) are considering that, so hopefully, when there is a conclusion, we will apply to Sebi (Securities and Exchange of Board of India) for their approval. And if their approval comes, we will be able to slowly expand the timing for some of the derivatives contracts at most", Ashishkumar Chauhan told Mint.
Currently the regular trade timing session on NSE and BSE is from 9.15am to 3.30 PM and the pre-open session runs for 15 minutes from 9am to 9.15am.

NSE and BSE said they will include Adani Power under the short-term additional surveillance measure (ASM) framework from Thursday.
Adani Power is shortlisted in short-term ASM framework Stage-I effective March 23, according to separate circulars available on the exchanges.
The move also comes close on the heels of the two exchanges moving Adani group stocks, Adani Green Energy and NDTV, from the second stage of the long-term ASM framework to Stage I.
Earlier, both the exchanges had put Adani Power along with Adani Enterprises and Adani Wilmar under short-term ASM on March 8. However, these three stocks were excluded from the short-term ASM framework on March 17.
Currently, there is no Adani group stock in the short-term ASM framework. &nbsp;

This is not the first time these discussions have come about. It has long been contented that the current trading hours in India have resulted in volumes shifting to offshore markets. Increasing the hours would help bring back volumes onshore. Longer trading hours would also help Indian investors to react faster to global events.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Currently, equity and derivatives platforms are open between 9.15 am and 3.30 pm. However, SEBI has already drawn up a framework that allows bourses to keep F&amp;O trading open until 11.55 pm and shares until 5 pm. It is now up to the exchanges to implement this, as no changes in rules are required from the market regulator's end.&nbsp;

Ahishkumar Chauhan is set to become the new managing director and CEO of the National Stock Exchange as capital markets regulator Sebi has given its clearance for his appointment, the exchange said on Sunday.
Chauhan, who is currently the MD and CEO of BSE, will be appointed for a period of five years. The tenure of Chauhan, who has been with BSE since 2009, is scheduled to end in November.
He will be taking over the helm of NSE from Vikram Limaye, whose five-year term ended on Saturday. Limaye did not seek another tenure at the NSE despite being eligible for it.
In a statement, the NSE said that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has approved the name of Chauhan as the MD and CEO of NSE.
His appointment is subject to acceptance of the offer made to him and fulfilment of terms and conditions including approval from the shareholders of NSE, the statement noted.
In the interim, an internal executive committee has been constituted by the governing board of NSE for running the affairs of the company till the new MD and CEO assumes charge. The committee will be dissolved upon the new chief assuming office.
The internal executive committee comprises Yatrik Vin, Group CFO & Head Corporate Affairs, Priya Subbaraman, Chief Regulatory Officer, Somasundaram KS, Chief Enterprise Risk & Information Security Officer and Shiv Kumar Bhasin, Chief Technology & Operations Officer.
Chauhan, who is one of the founders of NSE, has the uphill task of guiding the exchange, which is facing the regulatory probe in a case pertaining to governance lapses at the bourse as well as in the co-location matter.
The co-location scam resulted in ouster and later arrest of its former MD and CEO Chitra Ramkrishna.
Also, all eyes are now on the BSE that who will get the top job at the exchange after the departure of Chauhan. BSE has already begun the search for a new MD and CEO.
Under the new market infrastructure institution (MII) rules, the head of an MII is allowed a maximum of two terms of five years each.
Chauhan, a technocrat from IIT and IIM, is considered the father of modern financial derivatives in India due to his work at NSE from 1993-2000. He is also the creator of Nifty index and was in charge of creating the first screen-based trading. He started his career as a banker with IDBI.
At BSE, Chauhan helped it become the world's fastest exchange with 6 microseconds response time, completed its IPO, revived its revenues, introduced mobile stock trading to India, diversified in new areas including currency, commodities and equity derivatives, SME, start-ups, mutual fund and insurance distribution, spot markets and power trading.
In addition, Chauhan has the experience of successfully handling the initial public offering (IPO) of BSE. This was one of the eligibility criteria NSE was looking in its next chief.
The NSE is planning to come out with its initial share-sale since long. However, the plan to go public derailed after the bourse got embroiled into colocation controversy, where certain brokers were allegedly given unfair access to the exchange data feeds over other members.
In March, NSE invited applications from candidates for the role of MD and CEO. The applications were invited from candidates having IPO experience for the top post job.

Under the new market infrastructure institution (MII) rules, the head of an MII is allowed a maximum of two terms of five years each.
Chauhan, a technocrat from IIT and IIM, is considered the father of modern financial derivatives in India due to his work at NSE from 1993-2000. He is also the creator of Nifty index and was in charge of creating the first screen-based trading. He started his career as a banker with IDBI.
At BSE, Chauhan helped it become the world's fastest exchange with 6 microseconds response time, completed its IPO, revived its revenues, introduced mobile stock trading to India, diversified in new areas including currency, commodities and equity derivatives, SME, start-ups, mutual fund and insurance distribution, spot markets and power trading.
In addition, Chauhan has the experience of successfully handling the initial public offering (IPO) of BSE. This was one of the eligibility criteria NSE was looking in its next chief.
The NSE is planning to come out with its initial share-sale since long. However, the plan to go public derailed after the bourse got embroiled into colocation controversy, where certain brokers were allegedly given unfair access to the exchange data feeds over other members.
In March, NSE invited applications from candidates for the role of MD and CEO. The applications were invited from candidates having IPO experience for the top post job.&nbsp;

In a bizzare incident, former MD & CEO of the National Stock Exchange, Chitra Ramkrishna had been guided by a mysterious 'himalayan yogi' for over 20 years. Ramkrishna took several big decisions on directives of this 'yogi' through e-mail conversations, the Securities and Exchange Board of India's report showed. However, she fails to identify this person stating that he is apparently a 'spiritual force that has no physical co-ordinates'.
On the advice of this yogi, Ramkrishna appointed Anand Subramanian as group operating officer and advisor to the MD, a person who was apparently not even eligible for the position. He was also given big salary hikes multiple times during his tenure.
As per the SEBI's report, Anand Subramanian was drawing less than Rs 15 lacs per annum as on March 2013 in a subsidiary of Balmer & Lawrie and was in April 2016 drawing a compensation of Rs 4.21 crore per annum for part-time working as a Consultant with a designation of Group Operating Officer and Advisor to the CEO at NSE. There was no evidence on the file of his performance evaluation although he was consistently rated as a top performer.
No employment documentation or any experience in finance couldn't be verified since no papers were provided to the HR department. SEBI's report also showed Subramanian's direct posting as consultant to MD and unequal pay of more than Rs 4 crore per annum higher than most of the seniors at NSE. Subramanian used to work in Balmer and Lawrie in a middle-level management with zero exposure to capital markets.
“The unknown person according to Ramkrishna was a spiritual force that could manifest itself anywhere it wanted and did not have any physical or locational co-ordinates and largely dwelt in the Himalayan ranges,” the SEBI order said.
The regulator levied a fine of Rs 3 crore on Ramkrishna, Rs 2 crore each on the NSE, and Subramanian.
