Ranasinghe was at loggerheads with Sri Lanka Cricket for a few months over allegations of widespread corruption.
The Sports Minister's office stated that 1996 World Cup-winning skipper Arjuna Ranatunga has been appointe chairman of a new interim board. Ranasinghe publicly demanded the entire board's resignation.
On Saturday Ranasinghe wrote to full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) -- which has rules against political interference in the sport -- asking for understanding and support.
"Sri Lanka Cricket has been besieged with complaints of player disciplinary issues, management corruption, financial misconduct and match-fixing allegations," Ranasinghe said in the letters, released to Sri Lankan media.
The minister was forced by the ICC to withdraw a three-member panel he had appointed last month to investigate alleged corruption at the board after it was deemed to be political interference.

The record indicated a 43% growth compared to the 2019 tournament in England.
The viewing reached its peak during the India vs Pakistan match on October 14 when the concurrent viewing on DIsney+ Hotstar reached 43 million in the final overs of the match.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday lodged a complaint with the ICC over "inappropriate conduct" of the fans during its team's high-profile World Cup match against India in Ahmedabad.
The PCB also lodged a protest with the International Cricket Council over lack of visas issued to Pakistani journalists and fans hoping to attend the 2023 World Cup.
"The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has lodged another formal protest with the ICC over delays in visas for Pakistani journalists and the absence of a visa policy for Pakistan fans for the ongoing World Cup 2023,' the PCB posted on X, formerly Twitter.
"The PCB has also filed a complaint regarding inappropriate conduct targeted at the Pakistan squad during the India vs Pakistan match held on 14 October 2023." After Pakistan's defeat to India, head coach Mickey Arthur complained that the World Cup "seemed like a BCCI event" due to lack of Pakistan support at the stands.

India crushed Afghanistan to record a second victory on the trot in the World Cup with Rohit breaking several records en route a superb 131 off 84 balls.

India captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday urged his side to keep their focus on "things we can control" ahead of the mega World Cup clash against arch-rival Pakistan, having completed a dominating eight-wicket win over Afghanistan here.
India crushed Afghanistan to record a second victory on the trot in the World Cup with Rohit breaking several records en route a superb 131 off 84 balls.
The hosts reached the second spot in the points table after achieving the victory target of 273 with 15 overs to spare.
"(It) was a good win for us, very important to get that momentum at the start of the tournament," Rohit said during the post-match presentation.
"For us it is crucial that we don't worry about external factors and just look at things we can control. We just need to show up and do well," Rohit said while talking about India's clash against Pakistan on Saturday in Ahmedabad.
"Things like what the pitch is like, what combo we can play is what we can control. What happens outside we won't be worried about it. It is just about focusing on what we can do as players and how we can perform," the India captain added.
Rohit said absorbing pressure was a key factor in the first game for India in this World Cup. After being reduced to 5/3, India defeated Australia in the first match by six wickets to stamp their authority.
"We have got guys who can play fearless cricket with bat and guys who can absorb like the last game. It is about absorbing pressure and taking the right decision on the field," Rohit said.
"There will be a spell from the opposition where you will have to absorb pressure. Leading up to the tournament, we had played such games.
"We have got players with different skill sets in our team. They bring different attributes of the game to the team and it puts you in good positions as a team when you have that," he added.
Rohit on Wednesday recorded the most number of centuries in World Cup history, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar during his magnificent 131 against Afghanistan here. He also went past West Indies&rsquo; Chris Gayle (553 sixes across formats) to record most sixes in international cricket across formats.
"I knew once I got my eye in, the wicket was going to get easier for me. (It is) something that I have been working on from a long time," he said.
"It is a special feeling to get a World Cup hundred. (I am) really happy with that. Don't want to think too much; I don't want to lose my focus." Rohit said it was crucial to convert a start into a big score with a fearless approach. "You need to make such things count. You got to make it big. Some of it (the shots) is premeditated. I let my instincts take over at times, sometimes it really works well," he said.
Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi said his side wanted to reach 300 but failed to do so as they lost too many wickets in the middle.
"We had (it) in mind that India's batting line-up is long, (a total of) 300 was on our mind but unfortunately we lost too many wickets. The surface was good. We wanted to score more runs and put pressure on the opposition. Back-to-back wickets was the reason didn't score more runs," he said.
"After losing three wickets, I was talking to Azmatullah (that we must not) don't worry about dots, we will convert later. Our aim was to build a partnership."

The hype around the mega World Cup clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan has forced the BCCI to release 14,000 tickets for the contest to be played on October 14 in Ahmedabad. India and Pakistan will clash at the world's largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad for which the demand for tickets has been at its highest.
The Narendra Modi Stadium is expected to be a full house as the two rivals will be taking on each other in India after their 2016 World T20 clash in Kolkata, which the hosts won.
"BCCI announces the release of 14,000 tickets for the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match to be held on October 14, 2023, at Ahmedabad," the board said in a statement late on Saturday.
"The sale of tickets for the match will commence from 12 PM IST onwards on October 8th, 2023. Fans can purchase tickets by visiting the official ticketing website," the statement added.

Aiden Markram (106 off 54 balls) smashed a century off 49 balls to create the record of fastest ton in World Cups, while Quinton de Kock (100) and Rassie van der Dussen (108) crossed triple figures, as the Proteas made 428/5.
In reply, Kusal Mendis dazzled at the top with a rapid 76, Charith Asalanka top scored with 79 in the middle-order and Dasun Shanaka found form to hit 68.
But the target was way beyond Sri Lanka, who did well to make 326 in 44.5 overs, keeping South Africa on the park for as long as they could.
In fact, the contest ended with the distinction of featuring most runs scored in a World Cup game -- 754 runs were scored here at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
After Marco Jansen (2/92) cleaned up Pathum Nissanka (0) in the second over, Mendis unleashed a flurry of spectacular sixes on both sides of the wicket to provide Sri Lanka with the early impetus.
With South African pacers spraying their deliveries on his pads, Mendis dispatched each of them far into the stands to raise a 25-ball fifty.
The senior Sri Lanka batter seemed to be waging a lone battle as Kusal Perera (7) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (23) failed to match their partner in his endeavour.
In the absence of any support from the other end, Mendis fell after a 42-ball blitz that saw him hit eight sixes and four boundaries for his 76 runs.
He tried cutting a delivery from Kagiso Rabada (2/50) too close to the body and was caught behind.
Samarawickrama followed Mendis soon, chipping one towards midwicket with Jansen moving quickly in front to take a clean catch, off Gerald Coetzee (3/68).
Asalanka also took a bit of time to settle in, but to his credit, recovered well to hit four sixes and eight fours to make 79 off 65 balls, as by then, it had become abundantly clear that Sri Lanka were only looking to reduce the margin of defeat.
While Dhananjaya de Silva perished for 11, Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka failed to get a move on for a large part of his innings.
But Shanaka too hit his straps, smoking a six and five fours on the trot off Coetzee to bring up his fifty.
Shanaka's innings ended when Keshav Maharaj (2/62) cleaned him up for 68 off 62 balls (6x4s, 3x6s).
Towards the end, Kasun Rajitha swung his bat to a good effect, getting 33 from 31 balls (4x4s, 1x6s).
In the first half, de Kock (100 off 84 balls; 12x4s, 3x6s), Van der Dussen (108 off 110 balls; 13x4s, 2x6s) and Markram (106 off 54 balls; 14x4s, 3x6s) powered South Africa past the highest World Cup total ever, held by Australia, who had made 417/7 against Afghanistan in the 2015 edition.
After De Kock and Van der Dussen set the platform for a massive score with their second-wicket stand of 204 runs, Markram pulverised Sri Lanka.
All three South African centurions -- De Kock, Van der Dussen and Markram -- also recorded their maiden World Cup hundreds.
A total of 39 fours and eight sixes came collectively from the Proteas trio.
Heinrich Klaasen hit another three fours and a six for his 20-ball 32 and David Miller clobbered three fours and two sixes for his unbeaten 21-ball 39.
Making the most of a favourable pitch against a depleted and erring Sri Lankan bowling line-up, South African batters motored on at a high scoring rate in the middle-overs to wrest control.
An early blow was dealt when Dilshan Madushanka pinned Temba Bavuma (8) in front of the wicket, but that was the only moment of joy for the Sri Lankans.
De Kock and Van der Dussen, who came together a mere 10 balls into the contest, were separated only after putting their team in a commanding position with the fourth highest-ever partnership for any wicket for South Africa in the World Cup.
De Kock, set to retire from ODIs after the tournament, was in his elements in getting a hundred.
On the other hand, Van der Dussen celebrated his 50th ODI with a fifth ton of his career, cracking 13 fours and two sixes in the process.
Markram began with two cracking straight drives for four off Madushanka and brought out every conventional stroke in his book to break the record set by Ireland's Kevin O'Brien (50 balls for 100) in 2011.

Miraz first employed his off-spin effectively to take 3 for 25, helping Bangladesh to bundle out Afghanistan for 156, and then returned to make a crucial 57 off 73 balls in his side's facile chase that got over in 34.4 overs.
Najmul Shanto too chipped in for the Tigers with a patient unbeaten 59 off 83 balls.
Chasing 157, Bangladesh were wobbling a bit at 27 for 2 after openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das returned within the first seven overs.
However, Miraz and Shanto milked 97 runs for the third wicket in just above 22 overs to carry Bangladesh closer to the finishing line.
The tackiness in the pitch made a cautious approach mandatory for the Bangladesh batters, and they responded to the task while rotating the strike efficiently through nips and tucks around.
However, they also did not miss any opportunity to free their arms. Shanto danced down the tracks to deposit Mujeeb Ur Rahman over long on for a clean six.
Fittingly, it was Shanto who brought the winning runs when he smashed pacer Naveen-ul-Haq for two successive boundaries.
Earlier, Shakib Al Hasan and Miraz exploited a slightly tacky pitch to the hilt to restrict Afghanistan to a meagre 156.
Shakib and Miraz shared six wickets equally among them as Afghanistan spectacularly imploded, as only Rahmanullah Gurbaz (47 off 62 balls) offered some token fight.
However, there was no sign of such a collapse when Afghanistan were comfortably placed at 112 for two in the 25th over.
Gurbaz and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi were consolidating their third-wicket alliance, but the pace-spin combination of Mustafizur Rahman and Miraz rocked Afghanistan with two wickets in five balls.
Miraz was the first to come to the party. Shahidi, who was struggling to force pace against spinners, finally went for a desperate big shot off the off-spinner that was snaffled by Towhid Hridoy at mid-on.
Gurbaz too soon departed as his attempt to clear Rahman ended in the hands of Tanzid Hasan in the deep.
From that point, the Afghans slipped into a panic mode, and lost wickets at regular intervals as Bangladesh bowlers mounted pressure on them with a tidy spell.
Shakib's performance too deserved a special mention. The Bangladesh captain, who elected to field first, led the bowlers from the front with an impeccable show of spin bowling.
The veteran left-arm spinner is expected to lead Bangladesh's bowling effort in this tournament, and Shakib showed that he is ready for the task with a fine display on this day.
The Afghanistan batsmen, who has a reasonable amount of experience in tackling spin, failed to read him either off the hand or off the pitch.
The dismissal of Najibullah Zadran underlined that point. Zadran failed to read a ball that came along with the hand and held its line.
The ball went past his tentative push to rattle the stumps, and Afghanistan were in all sorts of trouble, a position that ended with their defeat.
