Odisha is known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant culinary traditions. Several Odia foods and products, like chhena poda and Similipal kai chutney commonly known as red ant chutney have gained government recognition.
One of the notable traditional sweets from Odisha is the Magji Ladoo which was recently awarded with the GI tag. It is not only delicious but also an important part of the state's culinary heritage, according to food historian and chef Sadaf Hussain.
The Magji Ladoo is thought to have originated in the Kalahandi district, where the Majhi tribal community, is known for their cooking skills and is believed to have created it.
Magji Ladoo is commonly enjoyed during festivals such as Diwali, Durga Puja, and Sankranti, and is often given as a symbol of prosperity at weddings.Its most significant connection is with the Puri Jagannath Temple, where it is part of the "chappan bhog," the 56 food offerings presented to the deity. This sacred association highlights the cultural importance of Magji Ladoo in Odisha
<h3>How to make Magji Ladoo</h3>
Ingredients:
2 cups roasted gram flour (besan) 1 cup powdered jaggery or sugar 1/2 cup ghee (clarified butter) 1/4 cup chopped nuts (cashews, almonds, pistachios) 1/4 cup grated coconut 1 teaspoon cardamom powder A pinch of salt
Instructions:
Roast the Gram Flour:
Heat a pan on medium-low flame and add the roasted gram flour (besan). Dry roast the flour until it turns golden brown and gives a nutty aroma. Stir continuously to avoid burning. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
Prepare the Jaggery Syrup:
In another pan, melt the jaggery or sugar with a little water until it forms a thick syrup. Add the grated coconut to the syrup and cook for a few minutes until it thickens slightly.
Mix Ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the roasted gram flour, melted ghee, and the jaggery-coconut mixture. Add the chopped nuts, cardamom powder, and a pinch of salt to the mixture. Mix everything well to form a dough-like consistency.
Shape the Ladoos:
Grease your hands with a little ghee and take small portions of the mixture. Roll them into small, round balls (ladoo) while the mixture is still warm. If the mixture becomes too dry to form balls, add a little warm ghee and mix again.
Allow the ladoos to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container. Enjoy your homemade Magji Ladoo!

The Biju Janata Dala, which has ruled Odisha since 1997, lost to the BJP in this year's elections, breaking the 24-year-old reign of Naveen Patnaik as the Chief Minister.

Following the defeat in recently held Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Odisha, Biju Janata Dal President Naveen Patnaik on 7th July 2024 issued orders for restructuring the BJD, ANI reported on Monday.
The restructuring reportedly aims to address the poll debacle and includes new appointments within the party.
As part of the restructuring, the party has also appointed five new national spokespersons and Santrupt Mishra has been appointed Political Secretary to party patriarch Naveen Patnaik.&nbsp;
Notably, in the 18th Lok Sabha elections, the BJD faced a significant setback, failing to secure any of the 21 seats, while the BJP won 20 seats and Congress managed to win one seat. In the state assembly elections, the BJD won 51 out of 147 seats, while the BJP secured a majority by winning 78 seats.

In a remarkable climb through the political ranks, four-time MLA Mohan Charan Majhi has been announced as the next Chief Minister of Odisha. The announcement was made by senior BJP leader and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on June 11. Majhi, a prominent tribal leader in the coastal state, will be supported by Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida as his deputies.
Rajnath Singh took to the microblogging site X to share the news: "Delighted to announce that Shri Mohan Charan Majhi has been elected unanimously as the leader of Odisha BJP Legislature Party. He is a young and dynamic party karyakarta who will take the state forward on the road to progress and prosperity as the new Chief Minister of Odisha. Many congratulations to him."
Singh also announced the appointments of the Deputy Chief Ministers, stating, "Shri KV Singh Deo and Smt. Pravati Parida will serve the state as Deputy Chief Ministers. Congratulations to them!"
Mohan Majhi, aged 52, addressed the media following his selection, expressing his commitment to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Odisha. "The government of the past 24 years has been changed. We will try to fulfil the belief that the people have shown in the BJP for the fulfilment of their dreams and for the development of Odisha. I promise to make Odisha the number one state in the country," Majhi stated.
<h3>Mohan Majhi's political career</h3>
Mohan Majhi began his political career as a sarpanch from 1997 to 2000. Majhi first entered the Odisha Assembly in 2000, representing the Keonjhar constituency. His tenure included serving as the Deputy Chief Whip in the coalition government with the BJD from 2005 to 2009.
Majhi passed higher secondary from Jhumpura High School in 1987, Class 12th from Anandapur College in 1990, and earned a BA degree from Chandra Sekhar College, Champua in Keonjhar. He also holds an LLB degree from Dhenkanal Law College.
The oath-taking ceremony for Majhi and other leaders is scheduled for June 12 at 5 pm. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend, with several dignitaries, including Union Ministers and Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states, also anticipated to be present.
The BJP's victory in the assembly elections, where they won 78 seats in the 147-member Odisha Assembly compared to BJD's 51, marks a significant political shift in the state. In a unique protest against its rivals BJP and BJD, the Odisha unit of the Congress on Tuesday opened a 'paan' shop and distributed free betel leaves, highlighting alleged 'scams' in the central and state governments.
The party put up 'price charts' in the paan shop, with each betel leaf bearing the alleged amount of each 'scam'.
The Congress' paan shop offered 'Electoral Bond Scam Paan' at Rs 9269.5 crore, 'Farm Loan Scam Paan' at Rs 800 crore, 'Mining Scam Paan' at Rs 9 lakh crore, 'Chit Fund Scam Paan' at Rs 500 crore, 'Housing Scam Paan' at Rs 1,000 crore, 'Plantation Scam Paan' at Rs 15,000 crore, 'Covid Scam Paan' at Rs 40,000 crore, 'Land Grabbing Scam Paan' at Rs 20,000 crore and 'Power Sector Scam Paan' at Rs 15,000 crore.
Speaking to reporters, AICC in-charge of Odisha, Ajoy Kumar said, "We have opened PAANN (Pandian, Amit Shah, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Naveen Patnaik and Narendra Modi) shop because these people have cheated the people of Odisha through various scams." The Congress leader alleged that both the Modi government at the Centre and BJD government in Odisha are trying to divert the attention of people from real issues such as unemployment and price hike.
So, the party has distributed free paan to inform them about the scams, he added.

An official said that local fishermen rescued 35 passengers and brought them to the bank, while some were rescued by police and fire services personnel.

The toll in the boat capsize in Odisha&rsquo;s Jharsuguda district rose to seven with the recovery of five more bodies on Saturday, an official said.
Personnel of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force and Fire Services, who launched a search operation immediately after the boat capsized on Friday, recovered five more bodies from the Mahanadi river, he said.
Two bodies were fished out earlier and seven people were missing.
"Five more bodies were recovered from the Hirakud reservoir of the river," the official said.
The bodies were sent for post-mortem examinations, he said.
"Five scuba divers fitted with cameras in their headgear joined the search operation and spotted the bodies of two women and three boys," the official said, adding that the search operation is still underway.
All deceased people hailed from Kharseni area of neighbouring Chhattisgarh.
The incident occurred when around 50 passengers were returning in the boat after visiting a temple in Patharseni Kuda in Odisha's Bargarh district.
The boat capsized as it was about to reach Sarada Ghat in Rengali area in Jharsuguda, a police officer said.
Local fishermen rescued 40 passengers and brought them to the bank, he said.
The Chhattisgarh administration has made arrangements for the transportation of dead bodies, sources said. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief over the boat capsize and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased.

At least two persons were killed and seven others, including four women and three children, were missing as the boat they were travelling in capsized in Mahanadi River in Odisha's Jharsuguda district on Friday, police said.
The incident took place when around 50 passengers hailing from Kharsia area in the neighbouring Chhattisgarh were returning in the boat after visiting a temple in Patharseni Kuda in Odisha's Bargarh district.
The boat capsized as it was about to reach Sarada Ghat in Rengali police station in Jharsuguda district, a police officer said.
Local fishermen rescued 35 passengers and brought them to the bank, he said, adding that police and fire services personnel rescued seven more passengers.
Seven other passengers are still missing and a search operation has been launched, the police officer said.
"The missing persons comprised four women and three children. The search and rescue operation will continue till the last person is located," Northen Range IG Himansu Lal told PTI over phone.
The IG said four teams have been formed and at least five scuba divers along with two underwater search cameras deployed in the search operation.
Lal said personnel of ODRAF (Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force) has also been engaged in the operation.
While Chief Secretary P K Jena and Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Satyabrata Sahu have been monitoring the rescue and relief operation from Bhubaneswar, revenue divisional commissioner (RDC), Jharsuguda district collector and SP are present at the river bank and supervising the operation.
The scuba divers and underwater search cameras were taken to the site through a special flight from Bhubaneswar.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased.
Local Bargarh MP and senior BJP leader Suresh Pujari, who reached the spot, alleged, "The boat was operating without a valid license. It was not accorded fitness certificate by the authority concerned and there was no life guard on it." The Bargarh MP also claimed that the boat was overcrowded and ferrying around 50 people much beyond its capacity.
Meanwhile, district authorities said that the incident will be probed but at present, priority was to rescue the missing persons.

BJD president and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will also contest from Kantabanji assembly constituency in Bolangir district of Western Odisha along with his traditional Hinjili seat in Ganjam district.
This was announced by Patnaik himself on Wednesday while releasing the 5th list of nine candidates for the Assembly elections in the state.
Patnaik in 2019 assembly elections had also contested from two seats. He won from both Hinjili and Bijepur assembly segment in Bargarh district of western Odisha. However, Patnaik later resigned from Bijepur and retained the Hinjili seat.
The nine BJD candidates announced by Patnaik included six women and four turncoats. The party has dropped four sitting MLAs - Purna Chandra Baka (Chitrakonda), Kishore Chandra Naik (Kuchinda), Rajnikant Singh (Angul) and Samir Ranjan Dash (Nimapara)..
Patnaik has also rewarded four turncoats and nominated them to contest the assembly polls. They were: Arundhati Devi (Deogarh), Dillip Kumar Nayak (Nimapara), Rajendra Kumar Chhatria (Kuchinda) and Laxmipriya Nayak (Chitrakonda).
The six women candidates are Laxmipriya Nayak (Chitrakonda), Barsa Singh Bariha (Padampur), Arundhati Devi (Deogarh), Sanjukta Singh (Angul), Sulkhnsa Gitanajali Devi (Samakhemundi) and Dr Indira Nanda (Jeypore).
While denying party ticket to Angul MLA Rajanikant Singh, BJD nominated his wife Sanjukta Singh from the same seat. Former minister and ex-MLA Rabi Nanda was also denied party ticket. His wife Dr Indira Nanda got the BJD ticket for the Jeypore assembly segment in Koraput district.
Patnaik also nominated S Gitanajali Devi, daughter of former MLA Nandini Devi in Sanakhemundi assembly segment.
The BJD president also inter-changed the candidature of two leaders. Rairakhol MLA Rohit Pujari has been nominated from the Sambalpur assembly segment while Prasanna Acharya will contest from Rairakhol..
With this, the BJD has so far announced the names of 126 candidates out of the total 147 assembly segments in Odisha.

&ldquo;Four men and a woman have died in the accident. Around 40 people were injured, and they were taken to Cuttack SCB Medical College,&rdquo; said Tapan Kumar Naik, Inspector in-Charge of Dharamshala Police Station.
The driver lost control of the vehicle, which resulted in the accident, police said.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief over the deaths and announced an ex gratia of Rs 3 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased.
Meanwhile, Transport Commissioner Amitav Thakur said the bus was bound for Haldia in West Bengal.
"We have formed a team of doctors for treatment. The injured, including women and children, are being brought to Cuttack with the help of 16 ambulances. The rescue operation has ended as the bus was lifted with a crane,&rdquo; he said.
Nikhil Pavan Kalyan, Collector and District Magistrate of Jajpur, said gas cutters were used to cut through the metal and rescue the passengers from the bus.
SP Vinit Agrawal added that the deceased are yet to be identified and that most of the passengers hailed from West Bengal.&nbsp;

Chikiti Assembly constituency in Odisha's Ganjam district is all set to witness a contest between two brothers in the forthcoming elections to be held on May 13.
The brothers facing each other in the electoral battlefield are sons of former Odisha Assembly Speaker Chintamani Dyan Samantaray.
While the opposition BJP has fielded younger brother Manoranjan Dyan Samantaray, his elder brother Ravindanath Dyan Samantaray has been picked up by the Congress. The Congress and BJP declared their candidatures on Tuesday.
Their father Chintamani Dyan Samantaray, a senior Congress leader, was elected three times from Chikiti - twice as an independent (1980 and 1995) and once on a Congress ticket (1985).
While junior Samantaray unsuccessfully contested the assembly elections twice - on Congress ticket (2014) and BJP ticket (2019), his elder brother is contesting for the first time.
The Biju Janata Dal has fielded Chinmayananda Srirup Deb, son of the state's Urban Development minister Usha Devi as its candidate from the Chikiti assembly seat, as Usha Devi was reluctant to contest this time due to her age-old problem. Usha Devi had been elected from the seat five times.
"I have been active in Congress since my father&rsquo;s period. As a result, I got a ticket from the party to contest. It will be a contest between two ideologies and not between two brothers," said Ravindranath.
Manoranjan claimed that he was very active in politics for the last several years and got the BJP ticket to contest the election.
"Some vested interests might have instigated my brother to contest in Congress ticket to create disturbance in the family. However, it would have no impact on my poll prospects," he said.
Chintamani Dyan Samantray said due to his ill health, he might not campaign.
The 84-year-old veteran leader, however, said he was a Congressman and opposed the policies of the BJP.
"My younger son's decision to contest on BJP ticket was his own decision. In democracy, we cannot impose our decision on anyone," he added.
Nabarangpur district in southern Odisha will witness a fight between an aunt and her nephew in the Odisha Assembly election to be held on May 13.
Kausalya Pradhan, the aunt has been fielded by BJD from the Nabarangpur Assembly seat while her nephew Dilip is the Congress candidate for the same constituency.
"This is a fight of two parties and not exactly between aunt and nephew," said Dilip.
Kausalya said the elections will have no impact on their family relationship.
Family members contesting against each other in elections is not new in Indian politics, said J K Baral, a retired professor of Political Science at Berhampur University.
"In the past, we have seen several such instances. Not surprised that two brothers are challenging each other in the same constituency," Baral said.&nbsp;

This comes after the India Meteorological Department predicted a maximum temperature of up to 40 degree Celsius in parts of state over next four to five days.

With the IMD forecasting hot and humid conditions across Odisha in the coming days, the state government on Saturday announced morning classes for students in all schools.
In a letter to all district collectors, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Satyabrata Sahu asked them to take immediate measures to mitigate the hot and humid weather and ensure that no casualty takes place due to the possible heat wave condition.
The School and Mass Education department also directed primary, secondary and higher secondary schools including private institutions to hold morning classes from 7 AM to 11.30 AM from April 2.
The state government has also issued an advisory for the districts and asked different departments to look after various sectors for mitigating the hot and humid condition.
The Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department and Housing &amp; Urban Development Department asked to identify the water scarcity pockets and ensure supply of drinking water through tankers.
The departments were also asked to open Drinking Water Kiosks at marketplaces, bus stands and other congregation points and take up preventive maintenance of tube wells and piped water supply systems.
Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), in an evening bulletin, said due to prevailing dry conditions in major parts of the state and high solar insolation, maximum temperature is likely to be between 38 to 40 degrees Celsius at many places in interior parts and between 36 to 38 degrees in the coastal districts during next 4 to 5 days.
The IMD also forecast that the minimum temperature (night temperature) is also likely to see a gradual rise by 2-3 degrees during the next 4-5 days at many places.
Most parts of coastal districts are likely to have a minimum temperature between 24 to 26 degrees C and interior districts between 22 to 24 degrees C.
The IMD said warm night conditions prevailed at isolated places in interior Odisha and the condition is likely to continue for the next 4 to 5 days.
As many as four places in the state witnessed temperature crossing 40 degrees Celsius with Malkangiri becoming the hottest place with 41 degrees C.

A 24-year-old man allegedly slit his own throat with a blade after losing an online game, police said on Saturday.
The incident took place in Jereng village in Jarpada police station area on Friday evening.
The man, identified as Soumya Ranjan Nayak, is undergoing treatment in a hospital in Cuttack, where his condition is stated to be serious.
Nayak was playing a mobile game and he lost thrice, following which he slit his throat, a police officer said.

The Odisha government has issued an order following a directive from the Orissa High Court, instructing state doctors to write medico-legal prescriptions in proper, legible handwriting or typed form and not in a zig-zag way.
According to The Indian Express, the court also mentioned that it has observed a trend among doctors to write illegibly which cannot be read by any common man or by judicial officers.

The tangy delicacy got the Geographical Indication tag on January 2, 2024. Its history and relevance are rooted in the region's flavours and traditions. In 2018, even British chef Gordon Ramsay had called it 'delicious'.

<h3>How Red Ant Chutney is Made</h3>
To make red aunt chutney, take two cups of red ants, two handfuls shredded coconut, 4-5 small red chillies, some salt, four cloves of garlic, mint and coriander leaves for taste. To make this chutney, pound ants using a mortar and pestle. If you want a more smoother and finer texture, bleed them with coconut and mint. Next, add finely chopped chilli if you want it spicy. Remove it from heat and add ant and coconut mix. Garnish with salt and coriander leaves.
<h3>How Villagers Acquire Red Ants For Chutney</h3>
Locals in Odisha and Chattisgarh make the chutney with red ants and their eggs. The villagers first get rid of male ants who are protecting the nests. After collecting the male ants, they head towards the egg-laying female ants.
These are then dried in sunlight and crushed before being made into a chutney. The tribals believe that this chutney cures flu, common cold, cough, fatigue and other health issues.&nbsp;

Breaking silence for the first time following six days I-T raids at his distillery firm and other premises in Odisha from where over Rs 350 crore in cash was recovered, Congress Rajya Sabha MP on Friday said that the money does not belong to the Congress or any other political party as is being claimed.
Speaking to ANI, he said the money belongs to his family and other related firms and will present account for everything.
The total amount of cash seized during the I-T department&rsquo;s searches at multiple properties in Odisha linked to Baldeo Sahu and Group of Companies Ltd, a distillery firm run by family members of Dhiraj Sahu exceeded Rs 350 crore.
According to sources in the I-T department, this is the highest-ever cash seizure by an agency in a single operation. The counting of the seized currency notes took five days and concluded on Sunday.

Cash worth more than Rs 225 crore has been recovered so far from several locations linked to Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Dheeraj Sahu in Odisha and Jharkhand.
The Income Tax Department has been conducting raids on Sahu's premises on charges of tax evasion in the neighbouring states since December 6, 2023.
&nbsp;the Income Tax department on Friday found 156 bags of cash during search for the third consecutive day at Sudapada in Bolangir district, also linked to the distillery group, officials said.
From the bags, Rs 25 crore were counted till Friday afternoon, taking the total amount recovered so far to Rs 225 crore.
"Of the 156 bags, only 7/8 were counted and the amount found was Rs 25 crore," an official said.
The raids were carried out at Sambalpur, Bolangir, Titilagarh, Boudh, Sundargarh, Rourkela and Bhubaneswar.
Around Rs 200 crore in cash was seized on Thursday during raids at the Bolangir office of Baldeo Sahu &amp; Group of Companies, one of the biggest country-liquor manufacturers in western Odisha.
The raids were conducted at some houses, offices, and distillery at Sargipali in Sundargarh city on Wednesday.
The company is yet to provide any reaction to the raids.

Bhadrak Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Santanu Patra said the patient was admitted on October 23 for treatment. He was advised for an operation after a week.

A 14-year-old girl pedalled a trolley rickshaw 35 km to take her injured father to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Odisha's Bhadrak.
The incident happened on October 23 but came to light on Thursday when some local people and journalists spotted the girl near Mohatab Chhak in Bhadrak town while she was taking her father back home on the trolley.
The girl Sujata Sethi (14) of Nadigan village took her injured father to Dhamnagar hospital, about 14 km away from her village, pedalling her father's trolley.
However, doctors asked her to shift her father to Bhadrak DHH. She pedalled the trolley 35 km to bring her father to the district hospital on October 23. Her father Sambhunath was injured in a group clash on October 22, sources said.
According to Sujata, doctors at Bhadrak DHH advised her to go back and come after a week for an operation.
"I neither have money to hire a private vehicle nor a mobile phone to call the ambulance. So, I used my father's trolley to bring him (Sambhunath) to the hospital,&rdquo; she said.
After getting information about the incident, Bhadrak MLA Sanjib Mallick and former Dhamnagar MLA Rajendra Das reached the girl and extended necessary help.
Bhadrak Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Santanu Patra said the patient was admitted on October 23 for treatment. He was advised for an operation after a week.
"We have no provision for ambulance service to return the patients to home ... He will remain in the hospital till the end of the treatment," Patra said.

At least 19 persons sustained burn injuries in a steam leak at Tata Steel&rsquo;s Meramandali plant in Odisha&rsquo;s Dhenkanal district on Tuesday, police said.
The injured persons were immediately rushed to a private hospital in Cuttack.
The accident occurred after a steam leak. Workers and engineers, who were inspecting the blast furnace, were injured.
Dhenkanal SP Gyanaranjan Mohapatra said that around 19 persons were injured in the incident.
However, a Tata Steel spokesperson said 17 persons suffered burn injuries, including one who was described as serious.
Tata Steel, in a statement, said the accident took place at around 1 PM during the course of the inspection work and has affected a few people working at the site.
The injured persons were immediately shifted to the Occupational Health Centre inside the plant premises and then to Cuttack for further treatment, as a precautionary measure, in the Company's ambulance, accompanied by a doctor and paramedics, the statement added.
All emergency protocols were activated and the area has been cordoned off, the steel major said.
"We are working closely with relevant authorities on the ground and have initiated an internal investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident," the company said, adding that safety remains its top priority.&nbsp;
