SN Subrahmanyan, Chairman and Managing Director of the renowned conglomerate Larsen &amp; Toubro (L&amp;T), recently expressed regret over not being able to make his employees work on Sundays. His comments, which suggested a 90-hour workweek, have sparked significant backlash, especially in light of growing concerns over work-life balance and well-being.
While Subrahmanyan's remarks were intended to inspire hard work and ambition, the reality of long working hours and their potential harm to health is well-documented. <a href="https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789240034945" target="_blank">A 2021 report by the United Nations</a> underscores the severe impact that extended office hours can have on both physical and mental health. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s shocking to see so many people literally being killed by their jobs,&rdquo; said <a href="https://www.who.int/news/item/17-09-2021-who-ilo-almost-2-million-people-die-from-work-related-causes-each-year" target="_blank">Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General</a>. "Our report is a wake-up call to countries and businesses to improve and protect the health and safety of workers by honouring their commitments to provide universal coverage of occupational health and safety services.&rdquo;&nbsp; 
The UN Report and Its Findings The United Nations&rsquo; 2021 report revealed alarming statistics about the consequences of overwork. Nearly two million people die each year due to work-related injuries and illnesses, with 1.9 million deaths recorded in 2016 alone. Among the leading causes of death were chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (415,000 deaths), strokes, and ischaemic heart disease.
The COVID-19 pandemic, which normalized the concept of working from home, further exacerbated the problem, making it even more evident that long hours are increasingly becoming detrimental to people's health. In addition to these conditions, the report highlighted 19 other occupational risk factors, including exposure to harmful substances like asbestos and prolonged sitting, which can lead to various health problems. 
Work-Life Balance and Its Importance
As conversations around work-life balance grow louder, Subrahmanyan&rsquo;s call for longer hours seems increasingly out of touch with modern concerns about employee health and well-being. Actor Deepika Padukone, among others, criticized the remarks, emphasizing the importance of work-life harmony for a productive and healthy life.
Responding to the backlash, L&amp;T clarified on Friday that the Chairman&rsquo;s comments were meant to reflect the company's broader commitment to nation-building and the extraordinary efforts required to achieve ambitious goals. A recent study published by the journal JAMA Network Open and conducted in Taiwan with 4,81,688 participants over approximately 13 years revealed that sitting on an office chair for long hours can kill you!

The research revealed shocking details about those who predominantly stayed glued to their workstations. It revealed that those who sat for long faced a 34 percent higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease (CVD), and a 16 percent increased likelihood of death from all causes.
With too much sitting comes obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and unhealthy cholesterol levels.
<h3>What does the expert say?</h3>
Dr Sanjay Kumar spoke to India Today and revealed the ill effects of sitting on an office chair for a long. He revealed that sedentary behaviour often leads to weight gain and obesity, both of which are significant risk factors for CAD.&nbsp;
The doctor also revealed that lack of physical activity can lead to higher levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, commonly known as "bad" cholesterol.&nbsp;
Women are more prone to getting complications than men.
Make sure to walk around and take breaks between work. Also, maintain a healthy diet and have plenty of water.

Twitter faces lawsuits over alleged unpaid rent for US HQ, UK office

Twitter has already been taken to court this month for falling behind on rent at another San Francisco office.

More landlords are taking Twitter to court over unpaid rent at the social media company's headquarters in San Francisco and its British offices &mdash; the latest legal headaches for billionaire owner Elon Musk, who has been trying to slash expenses.
Twitter is facing a lawsuit over allegations it failed to pay rent for its head office, according to California court documents. The owner of its premises in central London, meanwhile, said it's taking the company to court over rental debt.
Musk is making extreme cost cuts after his USD 44 billion deal last year to buy Twitter left the company on the hook for about USD 1 billion a year in interest payments.
Twitter has already been taken to court this month for falling behind on rent at another San Francisco office.
It comes as Musk has been testifying in recent days in a separate class-action lawsuit from Tesla investors alleging his 2017 tweet misled them about funding to take the electric carmaker private.

That's a whopping 1884% growth than what it was in 2020, where the searches were 112,400 only. While from 2018 to this year, there has been a hike of 630% in Google search for excuses to miss work. &nbsp;In 2022 itself &lsquo;calling in sick&rsquo; was the most-searched term followed by 'excuses to miss work'. &nbsp;

Workplaces that don't prioritise mental health, fail to acknowledge and reward hard work and place unreasonable demands on employees, increase workers' risk of depression by 300%.

Research conducted at the University of South Australia, found that full-time workers who work in a toxic work environment and are employed by organisations that fail to prioritise their employees' mental health have a 300% increased risk of being diagnosed with depression.
Additionally, the study found that in such workplaces, long working hours (41-48 hours a week and upwards of 55 hours a week) were detrimental to employees' <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/askthedoctor-dealing-with-mental-health-matters-in-covid-times-1619794303882" target="_blank">mental health</a>, even when workers felt engaged in what they were doing. The research was done with 1,084 employees working in New South Wales, Western Australia and Southern Australia.
According to the study, a workplace usually becomes toxic when the toxicity starts flowing from the top, with poor management practices, priorities and values. Evidence shows that companies who fail to reward or acknowledge their employees for hard work, impose unreasonable demands on workers and do not give them autonomy, are placing their staff at a much greater risk of depression.
As per the findings, male participants were more likely to develop major depression symptoms as a result of PSC than the females in the study.
