India's Olympic bid: Sardar Patel complex to be venue, says Shah

Shah said the 'Khel Mahakumbh' was started by Modi when he was chief minister of Gujarat, which has helped several players emerge from different parts of the state.&nbsp;

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday expressed hope the 2036 Olympics will be held in the Sardar Patel complex coming up close to the imposing Narendra Modi cricket stadium here.
In October, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said during an event in Mumbai that the country would submit a bid to host the Olympics that year. The Gujarat government has engaged the services of some of the finest firms to create sports infrastructure to ensure it can host the event.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Sansad Khel Pratiyogita, a sports event organised in his Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency, Shah said Modi had asked all MPs to promote sports in their areas.
"This competition will last for one-and-half months. I will join you after the finals. Sports brings out sportsmanship in us. It is important to lose with grace and have a winning habit. Those who play badly in sports or politics are said to be lacking in sportsmanship," Shah said.
Gujarat has the world's biggest cricket arena in the form of Narendra Modi stadium, and a sports complex is coming up near it, he said.
"It will host the 2036 Olympics (if India's bid is accepted). The government has allocated Rs 4600 crore for Sardar Patel sports complex and Rs 600 crore for Navrangpura sports complex (in Ahmedabad city). This will be India's biggest sports complex," Shah said.
The government is spending a lot to encourage sports in Gujarat, the Union minister added.

Gregor Braun was found guilty on Wednesday by a regional court in the southwestern city of Tuebingen of sexually abusing a child, soliciting the serious sexual abuse of a child and soliciting the production of abuse imagery in several cases. He was sentenced to 33 months' imprisonment, the court said in a statement Thursday.
During the trial, judges heard that Braun, 67, had for years paid for a woman to bring her young daughter along to sex dates, starting when the girl was 6 years old. Prosecutors alleged that in at least one instance the 35-year-old woman, who was identified only as Yvonne L. for privacy reasons, had forced the daughter to record explicit videos of her or the two adults together. At other times she took pictures of the girl and sent them to Braun, they said.
The case came to light after the victim filed a complaint with police in 2021, three years after running away from home. The court ruled that she is entitled to compensation from the defendants.
The mother, who made a partial confession during the trial and apologized to her daughter, was sentenced to 45 months in prison.
Braun denied the allegations against him and said he neither requested nor wanted the girl present, German news agency dpa reported.
But the court concluded that the victim's accounts were credible and said she had been robbed of her childhood.
The verdicts can be appealed.
Braun won gold medals in the individual pursuit and team pursuit events at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, several World Championships and numerous other track and road races before retiring from professional cycling in the late 1980s.

The 33-year-old escaped unharmed and described the crash as a "scary episode."
One of the other occupants, Stephen Ole Marai, was being treated in hospital for rib injuries, while others were taken to hospital with minor injuries but later discharged. Japan investigators raid Dentsu in widening Olympic probe

Dentsu dominates event organising, marketing and public relations in Japan. It helped land the 2020 Games for Tokyo, and then lined up record domestic sponsorships.

Japanese prosecutors raided the headquarters of major advertising company Dentsu on Friday, as the investigation into corruption related to the Tokyo Olympics widened.
Major local TV broadcasters showed Tokyo District Prosecutors and Japan Fair Trade Commission officials entering Dentsu headquarters.
Dentsu dominates event organising, marketing and public relations in Japan. It helped land the 2020 Games for Tokyo, and then lined up record domestic sponsorships.
Haruyuki Takahashi, a former executive at Dentsu, has been arrested four times in recent months on charges of receiving bribes from various companies that became sponsors for the Games.

The latest investigation centers around bid-rigging for places to be picked for test events, according to Japanese media reports.
The test events started in 2018, spanning various sports including sailing and weightlifting, to prepare for the Olympics. Being chosen for test events is critical to being picked for actual Olympic venues.
The money that exchanged hands for the bid-rigging totalled 500 million yen (USD 3.6 million), involving nine companies and one organisation, according to the newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun and other reports.
The companies involved in the earlier sponsorship scandal include Aoki Holdings, a clothing company that dressed Japan's Olympic team, and Sun Arrow, which produced the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic mascots named Miraitowa and Someity.
Takahashi, in custody since August, had tremendous influence over running the Olympics. The bribes he is alleged to have taken total more than 190 million yen (USD 1.4 million).
Dentsu did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Cerespo, an event company that Japanese reports said also was raided on suspicion of involvement in bid-rigging, did not have an immediate comment.
Tokyo prosecutors do not comment on such daily news developments. But Deputy Chief Prosecutor Hiroshi Morimoto told reporters recently that the investigation was continuing on the Olympics.
Speculation has been growing the burgeoning scandal may tarnish Japan's bid for the 2030 Winter Games.
The 2020 Games were postponed for a year because of the coronavirus pandemic. The International Olympic Committee has said it's watching Japan's investigation, stressing it had &ldquo;every interest in the full clarification of this case.&rdquo;

How many times have you witnessed a sporting body apologising to an athlete? Rarely, right? But it has happened with Indian star shuttler PV Sindhu and that too on her 27th birthday on Tuesday.  
Badminton Asia Technical Committee chairman Chih Shen Chen apologised to the two-time Olympic medalist for the human error made by the referee during Sindhu's semifinal match against Japan's Akane Yamaguchi at Badminton Asia Championships in April. 
The incident took place in Sindhu's match at the time when the former world champion had won the first set and was leading 14-11 in the second game. Sindhu was handed a point penalty for time wasting which shifted the momentum on Yamaguchi's side. The game then went to a decider which the current world champion Yamaguchi won.  
Sindhu didn't waste time and had written a letter to the world body and the Asia badminton confederation protesting against the umpiring. 
Apologising to Sindhu, the official said in a letter that there is no rectification at this time and they have taken the necessary steps to avoid a repetition of this human error.
"We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. We believe it is part of the sport and that it is accepted as such," the letter further reads.
The Hyderabad shuttler compromised with a bronze medal and didn't appear in the medal ceremony to show her dissatisfaction.

The 24-year-old had also finished second at the Paavo Nurmi Games with a previous best throw of 89.30m.
At the Kourtane Games, his throw of 86.60m was enough to fetch him a Gold in tough conditions.
But the Stockholm meet was the toughest event of the year since it was also the first time since Tokyo 2020 that all Olympic medalists from his event were in action.
World Champion Anderson Peters emerged victorious in the competition with a best throw of 90.31 metres. Julian Weber of Germany was third with a throw of 89.08 metres.
Even though Neeraj Chopra narrowly missed out on winning the event, he became only the second Indian to finish in the top three in a Diamond League competition after discus thrower Vikas Gowda.

Squash player Dipika Pallikal created history after winning two gold medals at the PSA world doubles championships at the Scotstoun Leisure Centre in Glasgow on Saturday. Dipika won the mixed doubles gold with Saurav Ghosal and teamed up with Joshna Chinappa in women's doubles to win the women's doubles final.
The pair of Saurav and Dipika defeated the English pair of Adrian Waller and Alison in two straight sets 11-6, 11-8 in 22 minutes. While the mixed doubles game was easy for the Indian pair, the Indian pair of Dipika and Joshna had to fight hard for the women's doubles title. Dipika and Joshna won against another English pair Sarah-Jane Perry and Alison Waters 11-9, 4-11, 11-8.
Dipika, a mother of two children has been off the competitive squash for the last three years and she made her comeback in the squash world in a stunning style. The world doubles titles are the first-ever for the Indian pairs.
