The controversy over Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Paris 2024 Olympics intensifies as the IOA shifts responsibility onto the wrestler and her team. With support from Indian sports legends, all eyes are now on the upcoming CAS verdict.

The 2024 Paris Olympics might have concluded, but the controversy surrounding Vinesh Phogat's disqualification is far from over...The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) issued a statement on Sunday, placing the responsibility for weight management squarely on the shoulders of the star wrestler and her personal team.
It read, "The Indian Olympic Association President Dr P-T Usha today clarified that the responsibility of weight management of athletes in sport like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and judo is that of each athlete and his or her coach and NOT that of the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team.
Dr. Usha said that each Indian athlete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in such sport had his or her own support team. These support teams have been working with the athletes over so many years.
The IOA appointed a medical team a couple of months ago, primarily as a team that would assist in the recovery and injury management of athletes during and after their competition. This team was also designed to support athletes who did not have their own team of nutritionists and physiotherapists.
Dr. Usha said that the hate directed at the IOA medical team, especially Dr. Pardiwala, is unacceptable and worthy of condemnation. She hoped that those rushing to judge the IOA medical team would consider all facts before arriving at any conclusions."
Vinesh Phogat was disqualified just before her much-anticipated Gold Medal bout in the 50 kg category after being found overweight by a mere 100 grams. The disqualification came as a shock, leading the three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist to seek justice through the Court of Arbitration for Sport, where she later hoped to secure a joint Silver medal.
While the decision was initially expected before the end of the Olympics, it has now been deferred to August 13th.
In the wake of Vinesh's disqualification on August 7th, the IOA swiftly issued a statement acknowledging the unfortunate situation. Later that day, Dr. P.T. Usha reassured that the IOA was doing everything in its power to support Vinesh. She highlighted that both the wrestler&rsquo;s team and the IOA's staff had worked tirelessly overnight to help her meet the required weight criteria.
Sunday's statement from the IOA, however, raises further questions - particularly regarding its timing, given that the matter remains under judicial review. Numerous voices, including Indian cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, have rallied behind Vinesh, supporting her claim for the silver.

India's Olympic hopefuls Deepak Punia and Sujeet Kalkal missed out on one of the last opportunities to qualify for the world event after their flight was delayed by the Dubai torrential rains.&nbsp; The Indian Express reported that, on Friday morning, wrestlers Punia and Kalkal arrived at the venue in Bishkek, Kyrzygstan just minutes after the weigh-in had gotten underway, prompting organisers to disallow them from entering.&nbsp; At the weigh-in, participants record their weights and show that they meet the criteria for the event.&nbsp; The organisers reportedly refused to make any exemptions despite requests by the two Indians.&nbsp; Now, they have another shot at Olympic qualification, at the World Qualifiers in May.&nbsp; The duo, arriving from Dubai, were stuck in the city for two days owing to the torrential rains that have caused massive floods and disruptions in air traffic across the United Arab Emirates (UAE).&nbsp; As per another Indian Express report, Punia and Kalkal were stranded at Dubai airport without any facilities and were allegedly sleeping on the floor within the airport premises.&nbsp; The rest of the Indian contingent, including Vinesh Phogat and Aman Sehrawat arrived in Bishkek directly from India.&nbsp; Punia and Kalkar were earlier training in Russia and took a flight to Bishkek via Dubai.&nbsp;

Kenyan police say they are investigating the murder of a three-time Ugandan Olympian in the 3000m steeplechase, whose body was found with stab wounds inside a car Sunday morning.
Moiben Police Commander Stephen Okal said the body of Benjamin Kiplagat was found in a car near Kimumu Secondary school along the Eldoret-Iten road_a six-hour drive west of Kenya&rsquo;s capital city, Nairobi.
"This was murder but we do not know the motive for now,&rdquo; he said.
The deceased was found in his brother&rsquo;s car which he was driving, Okal said.
Kiplagat represented Uganda in three Olympic games and six world championships.
Kiplagat reached the semi-finals of the 2012 London Olympics in the 3,000m steeplechase. Athletics Kenya official Barnabas Korir mourned the death of the athlete.
"We urge the police to speed up investigations and bring to book his killers", said Korir.

Cricket has been approved by the International Olympic Committee's executive for inclusion in the programme for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, it was announced Friday.
IOC president Thomas Bach, speaking after the second day of an executive board meeting in Mumbai, said officials had accepted a proposal by LA organisers for T20 cricket -- the game's shortest established international format -- to be included as one of five new sports together with baseball/softball, flag football (non-contact American football), squash and lacrosse.
But all the new sports will still need to be voted in by the IOC membership in a ballot due to be held on Monday before they are assured of a place at the 2028 Games.

Double 800m Olympic champion, Caster Semenya, has received a favourable ruling from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in a case centered on testosterone levels in female athletes.

Caster Semenya, the double 800m Olympic champion, has received a favourable ruling from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in a case centered on testosterone levels in female athletes.
32-year-old Semenya has a long-standing dispute with governing body World Athletics regarding regulations that require her to undergo hormone treatment to reduce her natural testosterone levels in order to compete in events between 400m and a mile.
The ruling could force the sport's highest court to re-examine the regulations that force Semenya and other female athletes to artificially reduce naturally high testosterone levels in order to compete at top meets such as the Olympics and World Championships.
The Strasbourg-based rights court ruled in Semenya's favor by a 4-3 majority of judges.
The case presented to the ECHR was against the Swiss government for failing to protect Semenya's rights, stemming from a Swiss Supreme Court ruling three years ago.
Despite two previous legal battles to overturn the decision, Semenya was unsuccessful until now.
In its detailed judgement, the ECHR determined that the Swiss government had not safeguarded Semenya from discrimination when the Supreme Court upheld the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision to support World Athletics' regulations for athletes with differences of sexual development (DSD).
Semenya argued that taking testosterone-reducing medication could pose a risk to her health and that the ruling violated her rights and those of other athletes with DSD, impeding their ability to rely on their natural abilities.
The court also ruled the South African runner was denied an &ldquo;effective remedy&rdquo; against that discrimination when the Court of Arbitration for Sport and Switzerland's Supreme Court denied her two previous appeals against the rules.
It was not immediately clear if the ruling would force an immediate rollback of the rules and if the 32-year-old Semenya would be allowed to compete at next year's Olympics in Paris.
She was the 2012 and 2016 Olympic champion in 800 metres but was barred from running in that event since 2019 by the testosterone rules and wasn't allowed to defend her title at the Tokyo Olympics.

It was a convention-defying move, and with the world watching, Fosbury cleared 2.24 meters (7 feet, 4 1/4 inches) to win the gold and set an Olympic record. By the next Olympics, 28 of the 40 jumpers were using Fosbury's technique.
The Montreal Games in 1976 marked the last Olympics in which a high jumper won using a technique other than the Fosbury Flop.
