Presenting the budget in the legislative assembly here, Abdullah, who holds the finance portfolio, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman for their support in various sectors.
"I am happy to present the budget for the first time as the finance minister of J&amp;K. This is a roadmap for economic growth and a true reflection of people's aspirations," said the chief minister, who started his budget speech with a Persian couplet.
This is the first budget of the National Conference government after it came to power in October last year, ending six years of central rule.
The last budget session took place in 2018 under the then PDP-BJP government in the erstwhile state of J&amp;K, which was split into two union territories after the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
"Our challenges are vast and our limitations are many but we must collectively pledge to confront these challenges head on with unwavering resolve," Abdullah told the House.
He said he has endeavoured to prepare this maiden budget as a "true reflection of the dreams of our people, the needs of our future generations and the aspirations of every citizen of Jammu and Kashmir".
The restoration of statehood to J&amp;K is a deeply cherished aspiration of the people and "our government remains resolute in working towards its fulfilment", he said.
Before presenting the budget, Abdullah said in a post on X that he could have never imagined that he would be presenting the budget one day.
"A little more than 7 years ago, tongue firmly in cheek, I was imitating the ritual of Finance Ministers holding up their briefcases as they enter Assemblies &amp; Parliament to deliver the budget. Never in a million years did I ever imagine I'd be doing this for real," he said.
He also shared a picture of himself carrying a briefcase as he walked with the late BJP leader Devender Singh Rana.

He highlighted the enthusiastic participation of the people in the elections, emphasizing that there were no allegations of rigging or misuse of power throughout the process.
&ldquo;Prime Minister, you had also promised the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. People keep asking me about this, and I keep reminding them that PM Modi fulfilled his promise of holding elections. I believe soon this promise will also be fulfilled, and Jammu and Kashmir will once again be a state in this country,&rdquo; Omar stated.
The chief minister acknowledged the peace-building efforts along the borders under PM Modi&rsquo;s leadership, which he said have significantly benefited remote areas. He mentioned regions such as Machil, Gurez, Karnah, and Keran, noting improvements in development and tourism with increased tourist arrivals. Omar also lauded the impact of the newly inaugurated Sonamarg tunnel, which will ensure year-round connectivity for people living in the upper reaches. &ldquo;With the opening of the Sonamarg tunnel, people from the upper reaches will no longer need to travel to the plains, as the road connectivity will be available year-round,&rdquo; he said.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah were also present at the inauguration.
The PM landed in Srinagar at 10.45 am and then flew to Sonamarg for the inauguration. He will also address a public meeting.
This is his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir after the assembly elections in September-October last year.
The Sonamarg Tunnel project, around 12 km long, has been constructed at a cost of over Rs 2,700 crore. It comprises of the Sonamarg main tunnel of 6.4 km in length, an egress tunnel and approach roads.
Situated at an altitude of over 8,650 feet above sea level, it will enhance all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg enroute to Leh, bypassing landslide and avalanche routes and ensuring safer and uninterrupted access to the strategically critical Ladakh region. The newly inaugurated Sonamarg tunnel will also promote tourism by transforming Sonamarg into a year-round destination, boosting winter tourism, adventure sports, and local livelihoods. Along with the Zojila Tunnel, set for completion by 2028, it will reduce the route length from 49 km to 43 km and boost vehicle speed from 30 km/hr to 70 km/hr, ensuring seamless NH-1 connectivity between Srinagar Valley and Ladakh. This enhanced connectivity will boost defence logistics, and drive economic growth and socio-cultural integration across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Addressing a query about a statement from an RJD leader suggesting that the INDIA bloc was only for the Lok Sabha elections, Abdullah remarked that no time limit had been set for the alliance. The chief minister said the start of the new government has been "decent" and that they "did not find much difficulty" in it.
"We are bound by our election promises. We have started the process of implementing some of the promises and for other promises, we need change in the system. I hope J-K being a UT is a temporary phase," Abdullah said.
"We the people are now expecting that the promises made with us will be fulfilled. The biggest promise is the restoration of the statehood. The Supreme Court in its judgement had also stated that the statehood should be restored as soon as possible. One year has passed since and we think one year should be enough," he added.
Abdullah said the sentiments of the people should be respected their aspirations should be fulfilled.
Addressing reporters, the chief minister termed it an interaction, and not a press conference.
"We are not making any big announcements as was being speculated on social media. We only wanted to have an interaction. We will try to answer your questions," he said.
"I would like to have this kind of interaction without any agenda at least twice a year," he added.

After the meeting that lasted 30 minutes, the chief minister told reporters that he briefed the Union home minister about the situation in the Union territory and the experience of his government in the last two months.
"Yes, I raised the issue of early restoration of statehood with the home minister," Abdullah said, adding that "we hope that Jammu and Kashmir gets its statehood restored soon".
On whether the talks included the militancy situation in the Union territory, he said security and law and order are the responsibility of the lieutenant governor.
"I have always said and I told the home minister that 'you cannot fight militancy and terrorism in a vacuum, you will have to take the public of Jammu and Kashmir in confidence....they will also have to be brought into this battle, and for that, you will have to take into confidence their elected representatives and their elected government'," Abdullah said.
The chief minister said the talks did not include the framing of business rules for the division of powers between the elected government and the lieutenant governor's office and made it clear that the Centre had no role in it.
"Business rules have nothing to do with the government of India. We have to decide it and the Cabinet has to approve it. The Cabinet sub-committee will finalise it and then, we will send it to the LG for approval," he said.
Abdullah will be attending the Goods and Services Tax meeting in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer on December 20. To a question about the proposed hike of 28 per cent on handloom products, he said, "I have not seen such a proposal. If it comes, we will contest it. Not only us, other states will be affected too."
Immediately after Abdullah's meeting ended and he left, Shah began his second meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and other senior officers to review the law-and-order situation in the Union territory.
Earlier, Abdullah met with Shah on October 23 during his first visit to the national capital after assuming office on October 16.

A day after the Kargil unit of the National Conference resigned en masse, party vice president Omar Abdullah made a renewed outreach to the leaders to support the INDIA candidate from the Ladakh Lok Sabha seat.
Unhappy with the INDIA bloc fielding Congress' Tsering Namgyal from Ladakh, NC's Kargil unit decided to quit and support Independent candidate and former NC leader Haji Hanifa Jan instead.
The leaders cited pressure from the party to support the Congress candidate.
Reacting to the mass resignations, Abdullah said, "Unfortunately, my people in Kargil didn't pay heed to my words. They have decided to shun Namgyal, putting us in a difficult position."

National Conference chief Omar Abdullah on April 25 claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party is backing Mehbooba Mufti for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
During a roadshow in Srinagar, Abdullah said that the reason BJP candidates have not filed nomination papers is that they are covertly supporting Mufti and her party candidates.
"BJP won't file nomination because they are covertly supporting the candidates. We all know that there's no BJP symbol but the candidates are there. Mehbooba Mufti has also got BJP's support. We will win all six seats of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir."
This is the second time that Omar has alleged the so-called BJP-Mufti secret alliance for the 2024 general elections.&nbsp;
Abddullah's allegation came after &nbsp;BJP leader Mushtaq Bukhari urged members of the Pahari community to vote for Mehbooba Mufti in the ongoing polls.
Polling in Udhampur was held on April 19 (Phase 1), while Jammu, Anantnag-Rajouri, Srinagar, and Baramulla will poll on April 26, May 7, May 13, and May 20 respectively.
In 2019, polling for the Lok Sabha was held for six seats in Jammu and Kashmir. However, following the abrogation of Article 370, which resulted in the split of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state into two Union Territories--Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, there is no longer a separate Lok Sabha constituency for Ladakh.
In the 2019 elections, the BJP won three seats while the National Conference won the remaining three.
Mehbooba joined the electoral fray from the Anantnag-Rajouri seat after the National Conference refused to accommodate the PDP chief, citing its victory from all three Lok Sabha constituencies in the Kashmir Valley in 2019.

After the abrogation of Article 370, Omar Abdullah, the NC vice president, had announced he would not contest assembly elections unless J&amp;K's statehood was restored.
At a press conference in Srinagar, Abdullah challenged the BJP to field its own candidates in Kashmir.&nbsp;
&ldquo;For all the talk of (Article) 370, development, normalcy, why not field a BJP candidate in the election, instead of proxies?&rdquo; he asked.&nbsp;
He said it was clear who held the reins behind Apni Party and People&rsquo;s Conference.
The NC leader suggested that BJP candidates would lose their deposits if they contested in the Valley.
&ldquo;Our contest is not against any individual or candidate. Our fight is against the forces standing with those candidates. Our fight is against the BJP and the central government,&rdquo; he added.
The National Conference has fielded influential Shia leader Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi from central Kashmir's Srinagar constituency.
The party had already named senior Gujjar leader Mian Altaf from Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat.
The NC, which is a part of the opposition's INDIA-bloc, is contesting on three seats in Kashmir valley, while it has left two seats in Jammu and one seat in Ladakh to its ally Congress.
Srinagar goes to polls on May 13 while voting in Baramulla will be held on May 20.&nbsp;

Former Jammu &amp; Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah has slammed the current administration of the union territory for directing its empolyees to compulsorily attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally in Srinagar on March 7.&nbsp;
Tweeting a redacted version of a document containing names and department details of govt employees, Abdullah said that they had been asked to assemble as early as 4.30 am in the freezing cold so that they can be taken to the rally venue in buses.&nbsp;
Abdullah said that department heads have threatened disciplinary action if employees don't show up.&nbsp;
"Tomorrow the godi media &amp; agencies will be gushing about the "historic crowd" gathered to hear PM Modi in Srinagar. What they will conveniently forget to mention is that almost none of the people there will be attending of their own free will. The dictatorial J&amp;K Govt has pulled out all stops to give the PM a crowd because the BJP can't manage anything in J&amp;K without the administration," Abdullah said in a post on X.
Abdullah also claimed that several private schools have been directed to provide their buses for transporting the employees for the rally.
"Private schools like DPS Etc have had their buses commandeered to transport all these employees to the venue. I have lists running in to the 1000s with department details, addresses &amp; mobile numbers plus transport details. I've redacted a portion of one page out of 140 pages. This is the naya J&amp;K but like I said godi media won't report this. They prefer "three families", "new era of development" yada yada," he added.

Congress-led INDIA bloc was formed to reduce the seats of BJP and not of its own alliance partners in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah said on Tuesday, reiterating that the party will not &ldquo;surrender&rdquo; any of the three seats in Kashmir that it has won in the last general election.
The former chief minister was reacting to speculations that INDIA bloc has reached an agreement on seat-sharing for the Lok Sabha polls in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh with Congress fighting on Jammu, Udhampur (in Jammu region) and Ladakh constituencies, National Conference (NC) on Srinagar and Baramulla and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Anantnag seat.
NC had won Srinagar, Baramulla and Anantnag seats and BJP was victorious on Jammu, Udhampur and Ladakh in the 2019 general elections.
&ldquo;Why should we surrender a seat? The aim of the INDIA alliance is to reduce the seats of BJP and not reduce the seats of INDIA alliance members. We are discussing only three seats,&rdquo; Omar told PTI videos.
He said there has been only one round of discussions in New Delhi recently on the seat-sharing agreement among the INDIA bloc partners.
&ldquo;There were certain proposals put forward by Congress which required to be discussed within the National Conference. One of the proposals that they had has not found acceptance from NC senior leadership,&rdquo; he said, without giving any further details.
He said there will be a second round of discussion and &ldquo;I am going to Delhi in a few days&rdquo;.
However, he reiterated that his party would be only discussing those seats which are presently held by the BJP.
&ldquo;There are only six seats including Ladakh. Three seats are anyway held by NC. So we are only discussing three seats - Jammu, Udhampur and Ladakh. So I do not think it will be too difficult,&rdquo; Omar said.
The NC leader expressed hope of &ldquo;good news&rdquo; with regard to assembly elections during the upcoming visit of the Election Commission (EC) to Jammu and Kashmir.
&ldquo;Jammu and Kashmir has not had assembly elections since 2014. This is the tenth year now. As I have said earlier, it is a matter of shame that assembly elections in J&amp;K had to be announced by the Supreme Court,&rdquo; he said, referring to the judgment of the apex court on December 11 last year, directing the Centre to hold assembly polls in the Union Territory by September 30.
Omar said the elections should have been announced by the Election Commission. &ldquo;Now the EC is coming here in March, so I hope we get to hear some good news.&rdquo;

Terming Azad's remarks as bile, Omar on social media X said that while they were kept under eight-month detention, Azad was the only former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister who was free.&nbsp;
He also accused Abdullah and his son of having double standards, as they "say one thing in Srinagar, another in Jammu, and something else in Delhi".

However, in another interview to ANI, Azad clarified that he never claimed that Farooq Abdullah met PM Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah. He said his earlier remarks were based on information from sources.

The National Conference is a part of the INDIA grouping and will continue to be, party leader Omar Abdullah clarified on Thursday and said it is in talks with the Congress for an arrangement in three of the six Lok Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Omar Abdullah's statement came shortly after NC chief Farooq Abdullah told reporters that the party would contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections and possible assembly polls in the Union Territory on its own.
"We were a part of the INDIA alliance and we still are. Things have been taken out of context. The main idea of the grouping is to defeat the BJP because there is no point in sailing in two boats," Omar Abdullah said with his father, also the party's Srinagar MP, by his side.
Farooq Abdullah, he said, was echoing the general sentiments of party workers.
"NC workers want to fight elections on all six seats but the truth is that sometimes for a bigger objective, small sacrifices have to be made.
"If the bigger objective is to win seats back from the BJP, it is necessary for the National Conference to enter into a seat sharing understanding with the Congress. Our doors are open," the party's vice president said.
Informal talks with the Congress are already on and there is scope for further discussions, he said.
"...I would like to make it very clear that our commitment to the INDIA grouping remains even though the founding members of the alliance have unfortunately left over the past few weeks. We are not among those who will leave. We will continue our discussions with the Congress and hope to arrive at some agreement soon," he said.
The six Lok Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh are Baramulla, Srinagar, Anantnag, Jammu, Udhampur and Ladakh. Of these, the three seats in the Valley -- Baramulla, Srinagar, Anantnag -- are with the NC. The other three are with the BJP.
"...Once we make friends, we stick to that...I would like to make it categorically clear that no door, no window and not even a crack is open for NDA," Omar Abdullah said, dismissing reports that Farooq Abdullah was hinting that the NC was not averse to joining the NDA as "mischievous and concocted".
He said his party's job was also to get the maximum number of seats in the assembly elections, as and when they are held, so the process of "undoing the damage done to Jammu and Kashmir by the BJP" can be begin.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the union territory next week, Omar Abdullah said, "We will also get to know how much development has happened in Jammu and Kashmir." One thing that the people would like to hear from the prime minister is whether his party will honour the Supreme Court's decision to hold assembly elections before September this year, he said.
"Also, the prime minister, who is the biggest supporter of one nation, one election, should begin the process by holding simultaneous elections in Jammu and Kashmir," Omar Abdullah said.
The National Conference has been a part of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) grouping formed last year and comprises the Congress, AAP, RJD, Shiv Sena (UBT), Trinamool Congress, DMK, Left parties among others.
The AAP and Trinamool Congress have said they would be going alone in Punjab and West Bengal.
The upcoming parliamentary elections will be the first major electoral exercise after the special status of the erstwhile state was abrogated in August 2019.
Earlier in the day, Farooq Abdullah, during his interaction with reporters, welcomed the prime minister's visit to Jammu and Kashmir and said, "The prime minister is coming, it is a good thing. He is going to announce some projects." Farooq Abdullah, who has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with alleged scam in Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, also echoed the view of several opposition parties leaders that the federal probe agency was being used to target their leaders.
"I am myself under the ED scanner. I will appear before them, I am not scared of the ED or anyone else. Let them do what they want. If they think they can finish off the National Conference by jailing Farooq Abdullah, it will not happen because the National Conference is a movement," he said.
Referring to the Supreme Court scrapping electoral bonds, he welcomed the verdict and said people have a right to know where the money for political parties is coming from.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said the gates of his house in Jammu were locked by the police and he was escorted to his office like a &ldquo;criminal&rdquo; to stop him from visiting Sunderbani area of Rajouri district.
Taking potshots at the BJP and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Singh-led administration, the former chief minister said, &ldquo;This has not happened for the first time.&rdquo; &ldquo;And as the (Lok Sabha) elections draw closer, I am sure such curbs will witness a spurt,&rdquo; he told reporters at the party headquarters.
Abdullah said that the &ldquo;gates of my house have been locked since this morning&rdquo; on the pretext of a law and order situation.
&ldquo;I have taken pictures because I know the police will later deny placing curbs on me,&rdquo; he added.
The National Conference vice president said that he was planning to visit the Sunderbani area of Rajouri to take part in a party function but was denied permission.
&ldquo;Even the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) accompanied me to the (party) office like a criminal is being escorted. This is for the first time that the SDPO accompanied me from my house to the office to personally see that my vehicle does not take any other turn,&rdquo; he said.
The former chief minister reiterated his earlier assertion that democracy is not allowed to reach Jammu and Kashmir.
&ldquo;They have once again proved it. They are saying everyone is free to carry out political activities, but it is only for those who are praising the BJP and its government,&rdquo; Abdullah said.
&ldquo;The people like us who are not government stooges or not involved in BJP flattering face such types of curbs. We are now accustomed to such things,&rdquo; he added.
Responding to a question that he was denied permission as the authorities were apprehensive that his visit might flare up situation due to tension between the Gujjars and the Paharis after the later were included in the Scheduled Tribes, Omar quipped, &ldquo;that means the government is weak and I can disturb the situation all alone&rdquo;.
&ldquo;I am feeling lucky that I have become so powerful that the government is afraid of me that they need to lock to keep me at home. It is good they are praising me, I have never thought myself so powerful but now I have to rethink it,&rdquo; he said.
The National Conference leader said the government's action shows that it has no power, ability and courage.
&ldquo;It is better for them to leave the government and hand over the power to us who have command over the people and who can provoke or silence the people for the overall betterment of Jammu and Kashmir,&rdquo; he said.
Abdullah said that his party has always supported the demand of Schedule Tribe status to the Pahari speaking people.
&ldquo;We have done no discrimination during our rule. We passed a Pahari Reservation Bill in the assembly and the then governor gave his nod to it. We tried to implement the reservation, but we lost the election and the new government did not pay any heed towards it,&rdquo; Abdullah said.
&ldquo;If you go back, the demand for ST status for Paharis was raised by (NC president) Farooq Abdullah during his government when Gujjars were given the status by the central government under the leadership of Indira Gandhi. Farooq was asked for a recommendation and without wasting any time, he convened his cabinet and a letter was sent to the then prime minister,&rdquo; he added.
Asserting the National Conference whenever in power followed the issue with sincerity, Abdullah said, &ldquo;We have always been in support of ST status to Paharis without snatching the rights of the Gujjars whose quota should be impacted.&rdquo;
Referring to party MP Hasnain Masoodi&rsquo;s speech in the Parliament before the Lok Sabha passed the Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Tribes Order (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which seeks to add four communities -- Gadda Brahmin, Koli, Paddari Tribe, and Pahari Ethnic Group -- to the list of STs in Jammu and Kashmir, he said that he raised genuine issues as the bill did not speaks about how it is going to be implemented &ldquo;Lt Governor administration and the central government should take Gujjars into confidence and make them understand how their share of the quota will be protected. They have concerns which need to be addressed,&rdquo; Abdullah said.

National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah on Friday came down heavily on the Jammu and Kashmir administration for allowing shooting of a TV serial inside the legislative assembly complex, calling it an &ldquo;absolute shame&rdquo;.
Maharani, a Hindi-language TV series starring Huma Qureshi, was shot inside the assembly complex in Jammu in June last year. The series is inspired by political turns in Bihar in the 1990s when the then chief minister Lalu Prasad, who has been mired in the infamous fodder scam, installed his wife Rabri Devi as his successor.
&ldquo;The true face of 'the mother of democracy', where once elected representatives of the people from all parties, religions, backgrounds &amp; parts of J&amp;K legislated on matters of great importance now actors &amp; extras use it as a set for TV dramas,&rdquo; the former chief minister of the erstwhile state of J-K said in a post on X.
He said it was a &ldquo;shame that the BJP driven government in J&amp;K has reduced the symbol of democracy, where they once sat and governed, to this sorry state of affairs&rdquo;.
Abdullah further wrote, &ldquo;They even have a fake CM coming out of an office I was privileged to occupy for 6 years. What an absolute shame!!!!&rdquo; The J-K legislative assembly was dissolved by the Governor on December 20, 2018.
The Mehbooba Mufti-led coalition government was reduced to minority following withdrawal of support by the 25-member BJP in the former state on June 20, 2018. The assembly was kept under suspended animation till December 19, 2018 before imposing Governor's as the former state had plunged into a political crisis.
There have been no assembly elections in J-K which was bifurcated into two Union territories - J-K and Ladakh - on August 5, 2019. The Centre also annulled Article 370 of the Constitution which accorded a special status to the erstwhile state. Ladakh is a Union Territory without assembly.

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed National Conference leader Omar Abdullah's plea seeking divorce from his estranged wife, saying there was no merit in his appeal.
A bench of Justices Sanjeev Sachdeva and Vikas Mahajan upheld an order of the trial court which had also refused to grant divorce to Abdullah.
The high court said there was no merit in the appeal filed by the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister challenging the trial court's 2016 verdict.
Abdullah has sought divorce from estranged wife Payal Abdullah on grounds that he was subjected to cruelty by her.
"We find no infirmity in the view taken by the family court that the allegations of cruelty were vague and unacceptable, that the appellant failed to prove any act which could be termed as an act of cruelty, be it physical or mental, towards him," the bench said while pronouncing the judgment.
On August 30, 2016, the trial court had dismissed Abdullah's plea seeking divorce.
The trial court had said Abdullah could not prove his claims of "cruelty" or "desertion" which were the grounds alleged by him for grant of decree of divorce.

J&amp;K Lieutenant Goveror Manoj Sinha denied the claims and said it is an attempt to spread rumours. He said no one has been put under house arrest or been arrested due to political reasons.&nbsp;
Reacting to Sinha's comments, NC leader Omar Abdullah posted pictures of his gates and said 'Dear Mr LG these chains that have been put on my gate have not been put by me so why are you denying what your police force has done. It&rsquo;s also possible you don&rsquo;t even know what your police is doing? Which one is it? Are you being dishonest or is your police acting independent of you?'

The apex court also upheld the validity of the decision to carve out the union territory of Ladakh from Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019.
The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir does not have internal sovereignty different from other states of the country, he said.

J-K Reorganisation Act should not be amended: Omar cites two reasons

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said that the J-K Reorganisation Act should not be amended as the case was pending in the Supreme Court.&nbsp;

National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah Thursday said the government should not make amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act as the law is pending adjudication before the Supreme Court.
Abdullah's remarks came after the Lok Sabha passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to nominate two members from the Kashmiri migrant community and one representing the displaced persons from PoK to the legislative assembly.
&ldquo;Our objections to the bill are on two issues. The first is that the Supreme Court has not announced its decision on the reorganisation and they (government) are bringing changes after changes,&rdquo; the NC leader told reporters in Pulwama.
He said the second objection the party has is on the filling of assembly seats through nomination.
&ldquo;That should be left for the elected government. The bill gives the right of nomination to the LG. It clearly raises a doubt that this is being done to help the BJP because the BJP cannot win the elections and so, they are trying to increase the number of seats for themselves,&rdquo; he said.
The former chief minister, however, said when the assembly elections take place in J-K, the elected government may undo the changes.
&ldquo;If there is no change in it, then after elections, when there is an elected government, we will see to it,&rdquo; he added.
To a question about the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) contemplating to approach the court over the amendment bill, Abdullah said the NC has already challenged the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act in the apex court.
&ldquo;The whole issue is in the court, the whole issue of reorganisation of J-K is in the court. Now, perhaps there is some compulsion for the PDP to go to the court, because they did not approach the Supreme Court when we filed a case in the apex court against August 5, 2019 (decisions), the PDP was silent then.
&ldquo;As of now, there is no need for us to go to the court because our case is already in the court,&rdquo; he added.
Asked why the NC and PDP were conducting party functions separately, and not coming together for the benefit of the people of J-K, Abdullah said both the parties have come together for a &ldquo;bigger cause&rdquo;.
&ldquo;Why should we not hold separate functions? We have different ideologies, but, as far as the bigger cause is concerned, as far as August 5 and a betrayal which was done with us is concerned, we talk about it together. We are trying to find solution to that together,&rdquo; he said.
He said the aim of the party workers&rsquo; conventions was to talk to the people and make the party stronger. &ldquo;There will be a test next year and we are preparing for that.&rdquo; To a question whether NC president and Lok Sabha MP Farooq Abdullah would recontest from Srinagar constituency, Omar Abdullah said, &ldquo;If he wants to contest the election, then we will not have a better candidate than him. Because of his health or any other reason if he decides against fighting election, then we will choose a suitable candidate after consulting him and colleagues.&rdquo;
