This revelation was made by Dr NK Arora, head of India's National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation in an interview with NDTV.
He said that Omicron subvariant BF.7 accounts for 15% of the cases, while 50% cases are due to the BN and BQ series of variants. 10-15% cases are being caused by the SVV variant.
"In China they are naive. They have not been exposed to the virus before, and the vaccine they got is probably less effective. I must tell you that most of them received three to four doses," Dr Arora was quoted as saying.

"There is huge opacity on the current situation on China. Opacity in terms of the cases, severity of the cases, their vaccination status and then the kind of variants circulating there," he added.

With Odisha having detected a case of the Covid virus subvariant which is apparently causing a surge in China, the state government issued instructions to district administrations.
Odisha health secretary asked local authorities to strengthen surveillance and ensure whole genome sequencing of samples found to be Covid positive.
"In view of the sudden spurt of cases being witnessed in certain counties, it is essential to gear up the disease surveillance and WSG of positive case samples to track the variant through Indian SARS CoV-2 Genomic Consortium (INSACOG) network," Shalini Pandit said.
The strategy of testing, tracking, treating, contact tracing, vaccination and COVID-19 appropriate behaviour needs to be flowed scrupulously to enable "timely detection of newer variant", she added.

A case of infection by Omicron subvariant BF.7 was detected in Odisha in September 2022, and the patient had been asymptomatic, as per officials.
The ICMR's Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Bhubaneswar conducted the genome sequencing of the sample, she said, adding that during the testing, it was found that the "sample was neither a variant of concern (VOC) nor a variant of interest".

India Covid alert: 3 cases of variant driving China spike detected in Gujarat, Odisha, says report

Three cases of Omicron subvariant BF.7, apparently the strain driving China's current surge of Covid cases, have been detected in India so far, official sources said Wednesday.
The first case of BF.7 in India was detected in October by Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre. So far, two cases have been reported from Gujarat while one case has been reported from Odisha, they said.
In the Covid review meeting chaired by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya Wednesday, experts said although there is no overall increase in Covid caseload as of now, there is a need for continued surveillance to keep a track of existing and emerging variants.
According to official sources, Chinese cities are currently hit by the highly transmissible Omicron strain, mostly BF.7 which is the main variant spreading in Beijing and is contributing to a wider surge of Covid infections in that country.
"The BF.7's high transmissibility in China might be attributed to a low level of immunity in the Chinese population from the previous infection and possibly vaccination too," an official source said.
BF.7 is a sub-lineage of the Omicron variant BA.5 and has the strongest infection ability since it is highly transmissible, has a shorter incubation period, and has a higher capacity to cause reinfection or infect even those vaccinated.
It has already been detected in several other countries, including the US, the UK and European nations such as Belgium, Germany, France and Denmark.

With the Indian government stating that "Covid is not over yet" in light of the spiking cases in China, it has emerged that India has already detected at least 3 cases of infection by the virus variant apparently driving the surge in China.
Three cases of Omicron subvariant BF.7 have been detected in India so far, according to sources quoted by news agency PTI. Two cases have been reported from Gujarat, and one from Odisha. One of these was detected in October 2022.

Researchers have identified in humans a pan-variant neutralising antibody, named S2X324, whose neutralizing potency was largely unaffected by any of the Omicron strains of the coronavirus, according to a study.
The scientists show that this monoclonal antibody prevents binding to the receptor on host cells that the pandemic coronavirus usually commandeers. They also suggested that combining this antibody with others in a cocktail might reduce the chances of the virus becoming antibody treatment resistant.
The international team from University of Washington and Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Humabs BioMed SA of Vir Biotechnology in Switzerland looked at several aspects of the effects of exposure to earlier forms of the SARS-CoV-2 spike antigen &ndash; or immune-provoking protein -- on the immune system&rsquo;s reaction to the Omicron variants.
Their findings have been published in the journal Science.
Omicron variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus appeared at the end of 2021 and have marked genetic differences from the ancestral SARS-CoV-2. The many, distinct mutations in their infection machinery have enabled them to escape from antibodies elicited from the original series of vaccines, from a history of infection, or from both of those two immune-system training events.
Past studies from the same team, according to the study, have noted that the BA.1 Omicron variant emerged as a "major antigenic shift due to the unprecedented magnitude of immune evasion associated with this variant of concern".
They explained that mutations in two of the main antibody targets in the virus explain why there is a markedly reduced antibody neutralizing ability against these variants, especially in people who have not received booster doses.
"As a result, an increasing number of reinfections are occurring," the scientists wrote in their paper, "even though these cases tend to be milder than in infections of immunologically na&iuml;ve individuals".
The evasive ability conferred by the mutations, they noted, also helps explain why most monoclonal antibody therapies given to patients in the clinic are less effective against these variants.
Knowing how well vaccination against one SARS-CoV-2 strain (with or without previous infection) counteracts infection with a different strain is a critical research question. The answers could guide strategies to continue to subdue the COVID-19 pandemic, even as the coronavirus regains ground.
Through their experiments, the scientists learned that vaccine boosters and hybrid immunity, or immunity acquired through a history of an infection and vaccination, both induce neutralizing antibodies in the bloodstream against Omicron BA.1, BA.2, BA.2.12.1 and BA.4/5.
People who had a breakthrough infection after vaccination also produced neutralizing antibodies against these variants in the mucus lining the inside of their noses. However, people who only received the vaccine did not generate antibodies in their nasal mucosa. This finding lends support to efforts to develop and evaluate next-generation COVID vaccines that could be delivered intranasally as the nose is generally the site where the virus first enters the body.
The scientists also determined that antibody responses to the pandemic coronavirus follows a pattern similar to the way the immune system responds to variations of the influenza virus. This phenomenon is called immune imprinting.
Immune imprinting means that the immune response shows a preference for recalling existing memory B cells specific against parts of the virus present in a strain to which an individual was previously exposed, rather than priming new memory B cells targeting differences present in markedly different strains upon infection.
While this can be helpful in stimulating a cross-variant attack, the scientists explain, having previous exposure to earlier versions of a virus can sometimes hinder a more specific response against a virus that has mutated significantly.

Chief scientist at the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Soumya Swaminathan, on Thursday said some countries may see "another wave of infections" with the XBB subvariant of Omicron, a variant of COVID-19 virus.

Suggesting the measures that need to be taken, Dr Swaminathan said monitoring and tracking are the key steps.

Chief scientist at the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Soumya Swaminathan, on Thursday said some countries may see "another wave of infections" with the XBB sub-variant of Omicron, a variant of COVID-19 virus.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the annual general meeting of the Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers Network (DCVMN) here, she clarified that as of now, there was no data from any country to suggest that these new variants are clinically more severe.
"There are over 300 sub-variants of Omicron. I think the one that is concerning right now is XBB, which is a recombinant virus. We had seen some recombinant viruses earlier. It is very immune-evasive, which means it can overcome the antibodies. So slightly that we may see another wave of infections in some countries because of XBB," she said.
Swaminathan said they are also tracking derivatives of BA.5 and BA.1, which are also more transmissible and immune-evasive.

As the virus evolves, it is going to evolve more and more transmissible, she said.
"As of now, there is no data from any country to suggest these new subvariants are more clinically severe," she clarified.
Suggesting the measures that need to be taken, Dr Swaminathan said monitoring and tracking are the key steps.
"We need to continue to monitor and track. We have seen that testing has gone down across countries, the genomic surveillance has also gone down over the last few months. We need to maintain at least a strategic sampling of genomic surveillance so that we can keep tracking the variants as we have been doing and studying," she said.
According to her, the Director General of the WHO has said that COVID-19 continues to be a public health emergency of international concern.
She added that 8,000 to 9,000 deaths are being reported every week worldwide due to the infection.
"So we have not said that the pandemic is over, which means that all precautions and tools continued to be used. Good thing is that we have now many tools and the most important thing is vaccines," Dr Swaminathan said.
"As far as vaccine coverage is concerned, our goals are 100 per cent of people over the age of 60 and 100 per cent of health care and frontline workers. Then we have a goal of achieving 70 per cent of the country, but subgroups are more important because they are most likely to face morbidity and mortality," she said.
She said that a number of deaths from elderly groups were seen when Omicron spread as they were not fully vaccinated.
"The full vaccination schedule is actually three doses. The primary two doses plus booster in the next four to six months. But in many countries, including India, the uptake of the booster is low. So we really encourage people to take the third dose," she said.
She advised continuing to use masks for protection from infection.
"While vaccines are still protecting us from severe disease and hospitalization, the risk of long COVID conditions seems to increase with each infection. So it is not benign. We should not be too casual by saying that it is okay to get the infection.
"Many people just think that it is just like the flu or any other respiratory infection, but more and more data is coming out on how COVID is affecting all organ systems and not just the respiratory route. It also affects the cardiovascular system and the inflammatory environment. So we have seen the risk of diabetes doubling, we have seen the risk of heart attacks...and other neurocognitive problems," Dr Swaminathan added.

Study suggests that this latest sub-variant can escape antibodies, vaccinations better than many other omicron sub-variants. As far as its symptoms are concerned, they are similar to any viral infection including sore throat congestion, fatigue, cough and runny nose. Countries like United States, UK, Australia and Belgium have already reported cases of this new variant. The UK has become the first country to approve a so-called “bivalent” COVID vaccine that targets both the original strain of COVID-19 and the newer Omicron variant, British health authorities announced on Monday.

The UK has become the first country to approve a so-called &ldquo;bivalent&rdquo; COVID vaccine that targets both the original strain of COVID-19 and the newer Omicron variant, British health authorities announced on Monday.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said it had given the green light to the Moderna vaccine as a &ldquo;sharpened tool&rdquo; against the novel coronavirus after it was found to meet its standards of safety, quality and effectiveness.
In each dose of the booster vaccine, &lsquo;Spikevax bivalent Original/Omicron&rsquo;, half of the vaccine (25 micrograms) targets the original virus strain from 2020 and the other half (25 micrograms) targets Omicron, the regulator said.
&ldquo;I am pleased to announce the approval of the Moderna bivalent booster vaccine, which was found in the clinical trial to provide a strong immune response against the Omicron BA.1 variant as well as the original 2020 strain,&rdquo; said MHRA Chief Executive Dr June Raine.
&ldquo;The first generation of COVID-19 vaccines being used in the UK continue to provide important protection against the disease and save lives. What this bivalent vaccine gives us is a sharpened tool in our armoury to help protect us against this disease as the virus continues to evolve,&rdquo; she said.
The MHRA said its decision to grant approval for this booster vaccine in the UK was endorsed by the government&rsquo;s independent expert scientific advisory body, the Commission on Human Medicines, after carefully reviewing the evidence. The regulator said its decision is based on data from a clinical trial, which showed that a booster with the bivalent Moderna vaccine triggers a strong immune response against both Omicron (BA.1) and the original 2020 strain. In an exploratory analysis, the bivalent vaccine was also found to generate a good immune response against the Omicron sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5.

&ldquo;The virus, SARS-CoV-2, is continually evolving in order to evade the immunity provided by vaccines. This novel bivalent vaccine represents the next step in the development of vaccines to combat the virus, with its ability to lead to a broader immune response than the original vaccine,&rdquo; said Professor Sir Munir Pirmohamed, Chair of the Commission on Human Medicines.
The authorities said that safety monitoring showed that the side effects observed were the same as those seen for the original Moderna booster dose and were typically mild and self-resolving, and no serious safety concerns were identified.
The UK&rsquo;s independent Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) will now advise on how this new vaccine should be rolled out as part of the country&rsquo;s booster vaccine deployment programme.
The vaccine has also been submitted for approval with the authorities in Australia, Canada and the European Union (EU). It is expected that the EU medicines regulator will approve the dose by next month.
Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel described the new vaccine as a "next generation COVID-19 vaccine", which will play an important role in protecting people over the winter.
"This represents the first authorisation of an Omicron-containing bivalent vaccine, further highlighting the dedication and leadership of the UK public health authorities in helping to end the COVID-19 pandemic. This bivalent vaccine has an important role to play in protecting people in the UK from COVID-19 as we enter the winter months," said Bancel.
According to official statistics, 126,504,756 vaccine doses have been administered in the UK including first and second doses as well as third and fourth booster doses rolled out on an age group basis.&nbsp;

A new Omicron sub-variant has been detected in the majority of samples taken from Covid patients in Delhi as part of a study at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital. 
More than half of these samples have been detected with the new sub-variant BA 2.75 of Omicron, a hospital official said said.
Doctors at the hospital, however, said cases in which these sub-variant was detected, the severity is less and patients are recovering faster, within five-seven days.
A PTI report quoting sources said the study involved 90 patients, and the new sub-variant is more transmissible.
COVID-19 cases have seen a surge in the last two weeks or so.  More than 19,760 COVID-19 cases in total have been recorded in Delhi from August 1-10, according to official data shared by the city health department here.
Besides, there been a nearly 50 per cent rise in the number of containment zones in the city in this period.  Delhi on Wednesday reported eight fatalities due to coronavirus, the highest in nearly 180 days, and 2,146 new cases with a positivity rate of 17.83 per cent, according to data shared by the health department here.
On Tuesday, Delhi had reported 2,495 new coronavirus cases with a positivity rate of 15.41 per cent and seven fatalities.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had on Tuesday said Covid cases were on the rise in Delhi, but there was no need to panic as most of the new cases were mild in nature.
Despite the rise in the positivity rate, the city government is not implementing the graded response action plan (GRAP) devised by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority since the hospital admissions are low.
The GRAP came into force in August last year, stipulating measures to be taken by the government in accordance with the positivity rate and bed occupancy for locking and unlocking of various activities.

A new Omicron sub-variant has been detected in the majority of samples taken from Covid patients in Delhi as part of a study at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital.&nbsp;
More than half of these samples have been detected with the new sub-variant BA 2.75 of Omicron, a hospital official said said.
Doctors at the hospital, however, said cases in which thus sub-variant was detected, the severity is less and patients are recovering faster, within five-seven days.
A PTI report quoting sources said the study involved 90 patients, and the new sub-variant is more transmissible.
COVID-19 cases have seen a surge in the last two weeks or so. &nbsp;More than 19,760 COVID-19 cases in total have been recorded in Delhi from August 1-10, according to official data shared by the city health department.

Besides, there been a nearly 50 per cent rise in the number of containment zones in the city in this period. &nbsp;Delhi on Wednesday reported eight fatalities due to coronavirus, the highest in nearly 180 days, and 2,146 new cases with a positivity rate of 17.83 per cent, according to data shared by the health department.
On Tuesday, Delhi had reported 2,495 new coronavirus cases with a positivity rate of 15.41 per cent and seven fatalities.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had on Tuesday said Covid cases were on the rise in Delhi, but there was no need to panic as most of the new cases were mild in nature.
Despite the rise in the positivity rate, the city government is not implementing the graded response action plan (GRAP) devised by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority since the hospital admissions are low.
The GRAP came into force in August last year, stipulating measures to be taken by the government in accordance with the positivity rate and bed occupancy for locking and unlocking of various activities.

Active cases amount to 1.12% of total cases and stood at 4,78,882. On Sunday, the country's active cases stood at the 5 lakh mark. 
There was a marginal increase reported in the daily positivity rate at 3.19% in comparison to Sunday's 3.17%. However, the weekly positivity rate climbed down to 3.99% from Sunday's 4.46%.

India's Covid graph continued a downward slide with 50,407 new cases being recorded in 24 hours.&nbsp;As per Covid data updated by the Union government on February 12 morning, the national positivity rate declined to 3.48%.
