Pakistan's leading right-wing Islamic leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman lamented the role of the military establishment and bureaucracy in election and running the country.

Pakistan's leading right-wing Islamic leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Monday came out in support of his erstwhile rival Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, saying the opposition party has the right to hold rallies and even form a government.
Rehman, the chief of his faction of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), made a blistering speech in the National Assembly, slamming the powerful establishment for allegedly rigging the political system.
&ldquo;It is the right of the PTI to hold a rally,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;We also objected to the 2018 election and we object to this (February 8 polls) one too. If the 2018 poll was rigged, why is the current one not rigged?" he asked.
PTI leader Asad Qaiser had demanded the party's right to organise a rally. "The demand of Asad Qaiser is correct and it is the right of PTI to hold a rally," Rehman said in his speech.
Rehman urged the ruling coalition of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and the Pakistan Peoples Party to allow the PTI to form the government if it enjoyed a majority in the parliament. &nbsp;&ldquo;Leave this power. Come and sit here [on the opposition benches], and if the PTI is indeed the larger group, then give them the government,&rdquo; he said.
The cleric then expressed his dismay over the role of the establishment and bureaucracy in election and running the country.
&ldquo;The establishment and bureaucracy had no role in achieving this country,&rdquo; he said.
He alleged that the elections held on Feb 8 were not fair but flawed.
"What kind of election is this where the losers are not satisfied and the winners are upset?" he said.
He drew parallels with neighbouring India. &ldquo;Just compare India and ourselves&hellip; both countries got independence on the same day. But today they (India) are dreaming of becoming a superpower and we are on the verge of bankruptcy,&rdquo; he said.
He said that decisions are made by somebody else but politicians are blamed for the problems.
Rehman also lamented the failure to implement recommendations from the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), emphasising the importance of upholding Islamic principles.
&ldquo;We got the country in the name of Islam, but today we have become a secular state. Since 1973, not a single recommendation of the CII has been implemented. How can we be an Islamic country?&rdquo; he said.
The CCI is a constitutional body set up to help Islamize the laws.
He also said that Pakistan was begging the International Monetary Fund to avoid bankruptcy.
The JUI-F was the arch-rival of PTI and had spearheaded the move for the ouster of Imran Khan. After his downfall, JUI-F became part of the coalition government. However, he parted ways with the PML-N and PPP after the elections as he alleged that the polls were rigged to keep his party out of power.
It is believed by many that by supporting the PTI, the cleric is putting pressure on the establishment and the government to cut a deal to get a bigger share in the spoils of politics than his potential.

Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora has been alloted the portfolio of minorities in Pakistan's Punjab province cabinet.

Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora, a three-term legislator, was on Thursday sworn in as a provincial minister, making him the first Sikh to occupy such a position in post-partition Punjab.
Arora has been allotted the portfolio of minorities of Punjab province in Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif&rsquo;s cabinet, a report in Dawn.com said.
Belonging to the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif-led Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, Arora has returned to the Lahore provincial assembly for the third term after winning the February 8 polls.
Hailing from the district of Narowal, Arora was also the first-ever Sikh member of the Punjab provincial assembly taking oath in 2013.
Another member representing the Christian minority community of Punjab, Khalil Tahir Sindhu, has also been inducted into the Punjab cabinet and has been assigned the portfolio of human rights.

Two blasts in Pakistan's Balochistan a day before parliamentary elections on February 8 killed at least 30 people.

At least 30 people were killed and more than 40 others injured on Wednesday in twin blasts targeting election offices in Pakistan's restive Balochistan province, a day before the general elections in the coup-prone country.
In the first incident, a powerful blast outside the office of independent candidate Asfandyar Khan Kakar in Pishin district killed 20 people and wounded 30 others.
Less than an hour later, another blast took place outside the election office of a Jamiat-Ulema Islam-Pakistan in the Killa Abdullah area claiming the lives of 10 people and injuring 22 others, officials said.
No group or individual claimed responsibility for the twin blasts.
Abdullah Zehri, a senior police official in Balochistan Panjgur, said that the blast outside the election office of candidate Asfandyar Khan Kakar was detonated remotely and was placed in a bag outside the building.
"The condition of some of the injured is critical and they have been rushed to Quetta for treatment,&rdquo; he said.
"Terrorists are targeting the election candidates to deter people from going to the polling stations but security personnel are being increased further to ensure the elections go ahead on schedule,&rdquo; Zehri said.
According to local media reports, the powerful blast had ripped through the election office of a JUI candidate in the Killa Abdullah area and caused great damage.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) confirmed the two blasts and said security had been further enhanced in the province for Thursday's elections.
"The perpetrators of these terror attacks will be caught and dealt with,&rdquo; a spokesperson of the ECP said.
The deputy commissioner of Pishin district, Jumma Dad Mandokhail, said that the condition of some of those injured in the blast was critical and they have been airlifted to Quetta.
Pishin is around an hour's drive from provincial capital Quetta.
&ldquo;We have sent 18 dead bodies to the hospital while 32 others were taken with injuries to hospitals,&rdquo; he said.
But a doctor at the Pishin government hospital said they had 20 dead bodies in the mortuary.
Mandokhail said the bomb was attached to a motorbike and it was left near the election office of independent candidate, Asfandyar Khan Kakar, and was detonated remotely.
Kakar is contesting the elections for a provincial assembly seat from Pishin and was not present when the blast took place.
Deputy Commissioner in Killa Abdullah, Yasir Bazai said the blast outside the Jamiat-Ulema Islam-Pakistan election office was also carried out in similar fashion.
In a statement, Balochistan's Home Minister Jan Achakzai condemned the attacks and announced that elections would be held as per schedule.
"Allow me to reiterate our unwavering commitment to relentlessly pursue terrorists until every last one of them is eliminated&hellip;Rest assured, we will not allow terrorists to undermine or sabotage this crucial democratic process,&rdquo; he said.
Caretaker Interior Minister Gohar Ejaz has strongly condemned the blast outside the election office of an independent candidate in Pishin.
According to a post on X, the interim minister offered his condolences to the families of the deceased.
The attacks came ahead of elections on Thursday for which elaborate security measures have been taken by the authorities.
Violence has been at its peak in Balochistan, bordering Afghanistan and Iran, in the lead-up to the February 8 general elections in Pakistan.
On Tuesday, 10 grenade attacks were carried out at security posts, election campaign offices and rallies in different areas of the province.
Since Sunday, there have been around 50 such attacks carried out in the province and in one incident in Sibi town attackers targeted an election rally of a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate for the National Assembly in which four people lost their lives and six were injured.
Frontier Corps and Levies personnel had reached the spot of the blast in Panjgur but the local police officer in the area said the casualties could increase as it was a very powerful blast.
Outlawed separatist groups in Balochistan have been carrying out attacks on security personnel, installations and government employees all over the province as they claim to be fighting a war to restore rights of the local people and an end to the alleged possession of the province&rsquo;s rich minerals by the government and security forces.
But since last year they have stepped up attacks and have targeted the candidates contesting the general elections.
Late last month, at least 24 militants, four security personnel and two civilians were killed during a three-day operation in the area.
Law enforcement agencies also thwarted an attack at a government school in Pasni, where an explosive device was discovered near the Bagh Bazaar Government School.
The militants have not spared even the residences of contesting candidates and late Tuesday night hand grenade attacks were carried out at the houses of Balochistan National Party-Mengal&rsquo;s candidate for National Assembly, Mir Mohammad Yaqoob, in Awaran district, and an attack on the house of PML-N candidate Mir Mohammad Aslam Buledi in Buleda.
In Panjgur town, grenades were thrown at the houses of National Party leader Abdul Qadeer Sajdi and an independent candidate, Dr Noor Baloch, who remained unhurt in the attacks.&nbsp;

Pakistan's Senate on Friday approved a non-binding resolution seeking a delay in the general election, citing cold weather and security concerns, increasing the political uncertainty ahead of the planned polls on February 8.
The resolution, tabled by independent Senator Dilawar Khan, received overwhelming support in the upper house of Pakistan's Parliament but was slammed as "unconstitutional" by major political parties. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) also rejected the Senate's resolution and clarified that elections will be held on February 8, 2024.
It was passed with only 14 lawmakers out of the Senate's 100 members in attendance.
Information Minister Murtaza Solangi and Senator Afnanullah Khan of three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party opposed the move.
Senator Gurdeep Singh of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP) Behramand Tangi abstained from voting. The Senate chairman adjourned the session indefinitely after the vote, Geo News reported.
The resolution was passed despite clear orders by the Supreme Court to the ECP to stick to its announcement to hold the elections on February 8.
Meanwhile, the ECP rejected the Senate's resolution and clarified that elections 2024 will be held on February 8, Samaa TV reported.
In a statement, the electoral watchdog said that nothing except the Supreme Court's orders could alter the election schedule and added that the next general elections will be held on February 8.
"The Senate resolution holds no value," the report said, citing the ECP's statement.
Major political parties also rejected the non-binding resolution, stating that further deferring the electoral process would be "unconstitutional".
Rejecting the resolution immediately after its passing, PML-N Senator Afnanullah Khan acknowledged that the security situation in the country was not good; however, he said the conditions were worse in 2008 and 2013, yet elections were held in both years.
According to the Dawn newspaper, he dismissed the &lsquo;pretexts&rsquo; as &ldquo;boot polish&rdquo; and said, &ldquo;Will you delay elections on the pretext of weather and security?&rdquo;. The PML-N Senator also claimed that some individuals were pushing for election delays for personal gain.
PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat told Geo News that the Constitution was "violated" in the Senate.
"The resolution for delay in general elections is an attack on the Constitution," he said, adding that there is no single clause in the charter for putting off the polls.
Addressing a press conference after the resolution's approval, PPP Senator Sherry Rehman said that the party has a clear stance that the February 8 elections should not be put off, according to the report.
"We absolutely do not support the delay in elections," she said, asserting that the PPP didn't favour the Senate resolution.
"This is rebellion against the Constitution. It was a [pre-planned] move and a conspiracy because the polls must be held on time," said PPP Senator Shahadat Awan.
He reiterated that the resolution was tabled under a "plan" as the matter was not part of Friday's Order of the Day. "Those who can see their defeat [in elections] want to delay the polls," he added.
The move by the Senate is expected to increase political and economic instability in the country.

Multiple churches have been vandalised in the Jaranwala district of Pakistan's Faisalabad on Wednesday over blasphemy allegations, Pakistan-based Dawn reported citing officials.
Speaking to Dawn, Imran Bhatti, the pastor of the Jaranwala tehsil said that the Salvation Army Church, United Presbyterian Church, Allied Foundation Church and Shehroonwala Church located in Isa Nagri region were ransacked. Bhatti further said that the house of a Christian cleaner, who was accused of blasphemy, has also been demolished.
Punjab police chief Usman Anwar said that the police were holding negotiations with the protesters and the area had been cordoned off.
Speaking to Dawn, the provincial police chief said, "There are narrow lanes [in the area] in which small two to three marla churches are located and there is one main church &hellip; they have vandalised portions of the churches."

The dropping of the weapons and ammunition took place in Metla area of Gurdaspur sector around 2:30 am.

Officials said the cache contained five Glock pistols, ten magazines and 91 rounds.
Security agencies suspect the consignment was meant for Khalistani separatist groups in the border state.

Terrorist groups whose names have never been heard before, claim responsibility for bloody attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. In Punjab, a man who was living in Dubai for more than 10 years, suddenly emerges, becomes the chief of a fledgling organisation, and starts talking about separating the state from India.
With suspicion growing that Pakistan's spy agency ISI has been propping up Amritpal Singh, Punjab appears to be witnessing a repeat of Islamabad's playbook already used in Kashmir, and even Myanmar.
Ever since the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status in 2019, the state-turned-Union Territory has seen mushrooming of several terror organisations. But these are actually just old outfits with new names, according to authorities.
The most prominent of these is The Resistance Front, which is an off-shoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, and some fighters drawn from other established terror groups like Hizbul Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Mohammad, as per intel agencies. Since 2020, TRF has been taking responsibility for many attacks, with other groups conspicuously silent.
Some of the other rechristened outfits are the People's Anti-Fascist Front, Jammu &amp; Kashmir Ghaznavi Force, Kashmir Tigers, and Kashmir Janbaaz Force.
Giving a new identity to old terror groups is a calculated move by Pakistan. One of the biggest reasons behind this was growing pressure on the country to crack down on terror financing by the global watchdog FATF. Another reason was to try to get international support for the terrorists by trying to show them as secular, local rebels, instead of religious warriors. Thus, names like Resistance Front and Anti-Fascist Front. But channels for funding and logistics stayed the same, as per reports.
The same strategy was reportedly used by Pakistan while creating radical Rohingya outfits in Myanmar, as per intel sources.
Now, Islamabad appears to be trying to implement its strategy in Punjab.
The state already has terror outfits operational for decades. These include Babbar Khalsa - the oldest Sikh militant group since Independence - which stormed back into headlines in 2022 after a grenade attack at the police's intelligence headquarters in Mohali. Around 9 groups, with operatives in 6 countries, have been trying to cause violence and spread terror in Punjab, according to a recent assessment.
And yet, it was a relative nobody who has allegedly been propped up by Islamabad to become the face of the artificially-propagated Khalistan movement. When Amritpal came back to India from Dubai in August 2022, he mysteriously became the chief of a young organisation named Waris Punjab De, which had been created by late actor-turned-activist Deep Sidhu. Beyond this, Amritpal was allegedly trying to create a new militia by the name of Anandpur Khalsa Fauj, according to sources cited in news reports.
Pakistan was removed from the FATF's grey list in October 2022. The developments in Punjab appear to be a sign of growing confidence in the Pakistan Army and ISI in this strategy of plausible deniability. More importantly, it shows Islamabad's desperation to get international attention on India-related issues - a move which has failed to get traction so far.

Unverified videos shared on social media showed an anchor of Pashto news channel Mahshriq TV continuing to deliver news even as the camera shakes violently.
Even staff sitting behind the anchor did not cease work through the temblor.

&nbsp;A district court judge in Pakistan said on Thursday he would halt attempts by the Islamabad police to arrest Imran Khan in a corruption case if the ousted premier surrendered before the court.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal said this during the hearing of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) case seeking criminal proceedings against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party chief for hiding details of Toshakhana gifts.
The judge had re-issued non-bailable arrest warrants for 70-year-old Khan on February 28 and directed the capital city police to bring him to court by March 18.
While hearing the case, the judge remarked that Khan should surrender unconditionally before seeking any favour from the court.
Khan&rsquo;s counsel presented the undertaking as per directions of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) that his client would appear in the court on March 18.
The judge remarked what was the meaning of the undertaking if the former premier was not present.

&ldquo;We want Imran to come to court. Why is he not coming? What is the reason? Imran Khan has to assist the police according to the law, not resist them,&rdquo; he said.
Khawaja Haris, Khan&rsquo;s lawyer, clarified that he wanted to give the undertaking to appear in court on March 18.
The judge stated that he would prevent the Islamabad police from arresting Khan if he surrendered in court.
&ldquo;Legally, Imran should have been directly brought to court&hellip; it wouldn&rsquo;t have been possible to harass him during the court appearance,&rdquo; the judge said.
He said there was no need for police to sit outside Khan&rsquo;s residence if he had appeared before the court and also said that being a poor country, Pakistan cannot afford to waste its resources on such matters.
He said if Khan had appeared before the court, the arrest warrants would have been cancelled.
Khan&rsquo;s lawyers requested that the non-bailable arrest warrants for him be forthwith cancelled.

Punjab police on Thursday registered an FIR against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan under a plethora of charges, including terrorism, a day after pitched battles broke out between security personnel and the ousted prime minister's defiant supporters in Lahore.&nbsp;
The FIR, registered by the Punjab Police, said Khan incited over 2,500 of his party workers present at Zaman Park to attack police personnel who wanted to arrest him in a corruption case.
The PTI supporters also torched police vehicles, threw petrol bombs at policemen and Rangers and caused injuries to a number of cops, it said.
Khan, 70, has also been booked in 83 FIRs across the country in which he is facing numerous charges ranging from inciting the public, contempt of a female judge and interference in official work to murder, abetment to murder, terrorism, treason and blasphemy.
Lahore's upscale Zaman Park area, where Khan resides, turned into a battleground for two days after his supporters clashed with policemen on Tuesday to stop them from arresting their leader in the Toshakhana case, resulting in injuries to more than 60 people.
Following the Lahore High Court (LHC) order, police and other law enforcement officials withdrew from Khan's residence on Wednesday, putting a halt to clashes. Khan, the former Pakistan Prime Minister, has been in the crosshairs for buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch he had received as the premier at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana and selling them for profit.
Khan skipped the indictment hearing in this case on several occasions, which led to an arrest warrant being slapped against him.

Meanwhile, containers were placed outside the entrance to Khan's residence by his supporters on Thursday after the LHC ordered police action be postponed till March 17. The court directive notwithstanding, there was still a heavy contingent of police across Zaman Park area.
Khan was ousted from power in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote, which he alleged was part of a US-led conspiracy targeting him because of his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China and Afghanistan.
Since his ouster, Khan has been asking for early elections to oust what he termed an "imported government" led by prime minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Sharif has maintained that elections will be held later this year once the parliament completes its five-year tenure.

Created in 1978, Toshakhana is a government department which handles the gifts given to Pakistan officials.&nbsp;
Gifts costing upto Pakistani Rs 30,000 can be kept by the president or prime minister but more expensive gifts are to be kept in the Toshakhana according to the Pakistani law.
Toshakhana, which means the house of treasure, also consists of an evaluation committee which determines the amount to be paid by an official if he/she wishes to hold onto a gift.
Imran raised this amount from 20% of the gift value to 50% when he came to power in 2018.
Imran Khan is accused of allegedly concealing details of the gifts in his assets declarations he retained from the Toshakhana.
As per the records of Toshakhana released by Shehbaz Sharif government recently, Imran retained higher value gifts at a lower price.
Khan retained a diamond-gold watch worth Pak Rupees 85 million, a pair of cufflinks worth PKR 5.67 million, a pen worth PKR 1.5 million and a ring worth PKR 8.7 million at a gross amount of 20 million Pak rupees, as per a report by NDTV.
